- Geniusjones, on 07/11/2008, -3/+113The ACLU defends your rights to life, liberty and happiness, without discrimination. They're here to make sure we're all free to pursure the American dream, without being trampled on.
You can complain all you like about this case or that, but no examination of their case history would make a reasonable person doubt that regardless of who you are, they're here to force the government to respect all Americans' right to the protection of our beloved constitution.
Here are some examples of some of the benefits conservatives have gotten from their hard work.
September 20, 2005: ACLU of New Jersey joins lawsuit supporting second-grader's right to sing "Awesome God" at a talent show.
August 4, 2005: ACLU helps free a New Mexico street preacher from prison.

- SwordOfShannara, on 07/11/2008, -4/+48You can take action against this here: http://www.accountabilitynowpac.com Strangebedfellows is a right-left coalition that aims to hold these politicians accountable by removing them from office.
- knightblade2oo4, on 07/11/2008, -2/+45Say what you will about the ACLU, but when worst comes to worst the people come first. They're not afraid to back down on touchy ***** and for that all Americans should be proud, whether you're liberal, conservative, radical, revolutionary, or whathaveyou.
- jehan60188, on 07/11/2008, -2/+34for once?
see, that's the problem- people only care about rights and civil liberties when their own personal way of life is being threatened.
it's like that cliche poem about how some guy didn't care when the government rounded people up into concentration camps, until he was the one getting rounded up, but it was too late, and there was nobody left to help him out... - diggduggDOOM, on 07/11/2008, -2/+30The ACLU has defended Christians.
- jcani, on 07/11/2008, -3/+30*shakes head slowly*
- maj0rm0j0, on 07/11/2008, -1/+25Maybe he watches FoxNews. They try to make their watchers believe the ACLU is a terrorist group.
- Nowheredan, on 07/11/2008, -2/+26So Rush Limbaugh is a foreign child-loving Muslim, is he? 'Cause they came to his defense when prosecutors illegally accessed his medical records to prove he'd been doctor-shopping for painkillers.
- Midtowner, on 07/11/2008, -0/+24Good stuff. I'm a pretty conservative guy on many issues, but I still support the ACLU 100%. Too many conservatives get sold on the idea that it's sometimes okay to trample on civil liberties so long as that trampling is compatible with their ideological positions. I find that sort of position to be hypocritical and dangerous.
Someone has to stand up for our rights, even when it's not popular to do so. Thank God for the ACLU.

- maj0rm0j0, on 07/11/2008, -2/+23I'm astounded by how many people here don't favor their civil liberties and the ACLU. The ACLU has always fought to protect the constitution and the rights of average Americans. We should all be very thankful for the ACLU and from the looks of it a whole bunch of you need to research the work they have done for you.
I can't help but think that this is the MSM once again influencing the opinions of the people to fight against their own interest. It's amazing that it works so easily. - DeskFlyer, on 07/11/2008, -1/+22Professional troll? I wouldn't give him that much credit.
- Waiting2awake, on 07/11/2008, -1/+21Don't worry it is just an act. No one could be that dense. Consider him a professional troll.
- dalittle, on 07/11/2008, -1/+20If you donated any money to Obama, ask for a refund and send it to the ACLU.
- Hetman, on 07/11/2008, -5/+23Finally ACLU has a cause I can get behind. Hopefully this FISA bill will be overturned by the supreme court.

I had planned on sending $100 to the Obama campaign after the convention. Instead I just went online and became a member of the ACLU. Put your money where your mouth is, vote with your dollars and go to http://www.aclu.org/ and click on the 'JOIN THE ACLU!' button in the upper right hand corner. Do it now.
- inactive, on 07/11/2008, -2/+17"we will literally never know how the FISA court interprets the new law. The idea that we could have a secret body of Constitutional Law is more Kafka than America." - word.
- CoreyHalliwell, on 07/11/2008, -2/+16I don't get it, the constitution is what America is based on. Why are people being allowed to ***** with it? I can see changing it to add new rights but to take away from it seems pretty tyrannical. Someone should do something... if only there was something written in the constitution that allowed people to overthrow the government...
- enki25, on 07/11/2008, -5/+19***** the ACLU, they attacked boy scouts. I only like organizations that defend the constitution when it benefits conservative organizations, because conservatives are the only Americans who understand liberty. The rest of you are bugs, ***** bugs!
/republifag - enki25, on 07/11/2008, -2/+15What is it with conservatives and their obsession with NAMBLA? STFU and be gay already, the rest of us are sick of your holier-than-thou self denial.
- pintomp3, on 07/11/2008, -1/+13time to donate to the ACLU and EFF again.
- anillop, on 07/11/2008, -0/+11The ACLU is the most worthwhile organization you can donate your money to. They will defend your rights no matter what your cause. They are often the only hope for the little guy when the government is trying to trample their rights. The ACLU has done more to preserve the liberties and freedoms of Americans than any other person or organization in American history. When you have no one else to turn to the ACLU is there.
- savagesteve13, on 07/11/2008, -2/+13I can't believe the Democrats have been bought out by the telecoms. I thought they were our last hope against the soviet-style rampages of the GOP.

- malex, on 07/11/2008, -2/+11Oh, Steve... are you ever NOT wrong?
- inactive, on 07/11/2008, -1/+10What the *****?! You wanna be a bad ass activist? You must take direct, SACRIFICIAL action! Send those AT&T and Verizon ***** a message in the only language they understand: MONEY. As in, cancel your service and don't pay your bill! (...But OH! My credit score will suffer!!!....wwwwwWWWAAAAAAaaaaaaa!) Get with it people. Stop complaining and do something. Small. Disobedient. DO SOMETHING.
- reed311, on 07/11/2008, -0/+7The reason they don't divert resources to the 2nd Amendment is because the NRA has that market cornered. It would be a waste of time/resources for them to do so as there is group specifically dedicated to defending the 2nd Amendment.
Second, you have no idea about the history of the ACLU if you think they are playing politics. They have defended Rush Limbaugh, the KKK, Christians, Atheists, Muslims and nearly every group under the sun. - rmad1949, on 07/11/2008, -1/+8Jefferson told us long ago to always keep one eye on the government. The Constitution with its Amendments was made to add to or delete as America travels through the generations. Jefferson and those men involved in putting the Constitution together knew this. Our Constitution is a living, breathing, ever changing document made purposely for that reason. Nobody knew in 1776 - 1789 what was going to happen in 2008. For example, like adding prohibition - was there yesteryear, but gone today.
You own a gun don't you? They are allowed in our society for a lot of more reasons than gang-banging, suicide, children accidentally killing each other, robbing banks and so-on-and-so-forth. One only needs to look at our Civil War (1860-1865). This war wasn't just the North and South meeting at Gettysburg in uniforms. Take a look at Missouri and you would easily find neighbor killing neighbor, brother killing brother etc. etc. over political differences and problems that went far beyond just civil and slavery issues. This was a period that made "It's pay-back time" a reality bordering on horrific. My advice... buy a gun, lock it up and you will know when the time comes that you need to use it. - jynweythek, on 09/17/2008, -4/+11Did you know that you can become a card-carrying member of the ACLU for as little as $20? =)
http://action.aclu.org/site/PageServer?pagename=FJ ... - pintomp3, on 07/11/2008, -0/+7i may not agree with what you say, but i'll defend to the death your right to say it.
- byrdgang, on 07/11/2008, -1/+8GnralHavoc, seriously, why can't you at least Google the whole NAMBLA thing before you talk about it? Here's a link:

I am struck by how lazy some people are inspite of having a ton of information at their fingertips. - h0bart, on 07/11/2008, -2/+8Dugg because people need to know, but I should bury it because the supreme court will not overturn. This is not the first bill of it's kind. The constitution gets trampled on almost everyday in DC and none of the big boys in either major party do anything BECAUSE THEY ARE THE ONES THAT PUSH FOR THIS KINDOF *****.
- OC73, on 07/11/2008, -6/+12Correction: It's now the Obama-Bush FISA Bill.
- paradexes, on 07/11/2008, -3/+9Anyone who disagrees with our Govt in coming years will likley go to those now empty detention centers. V for vendetta anyone?
- elliotys, on 07/11/2008, -1/+6There ARE moral lawyers who hold the rule of law in very high regards, and above their partisan ideals. The ACLU is often accused of politics, usually from the far right, but again and again they prove that they are truly looking out for OUR civil liberties.
- Homerr, on 07/11/2008, -1/+6President Andrew Shepherd: For the last couple of months, Senator Rumson has suggested that being president of this country was, to a certain extent, about character, and although I have not been willing to engage in his attacks on me, I've been here three years and three days, and I can tell you without hesitation: Being President of this country is entirely about character. For the record: yes, I am a card-carrying member of the ACLU. But the more important question is why aren't you, Bob? Now, this is an organization whose sole purpose is to defend the Bill of Rights, so it naturally begs the question: Why would a senator, his party's most powerful spokesman and a candidate for President, choose to reject upholding the Constitution? If you can answer that question, folks, then you're smarter than I am, because I didn't understand it until a few hours ago. America isn't easy. America is advanced citizenship. You gotta want it bad, 'cause it's gonna put up a fight. It's gonna say "You want free speech? Let's see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil, who's standing center stage and advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours.
- savagesteve13, on 07/11/2008, -2/+7Americans are stupid. They're ignorant, uneducated and proud of it. They speak no other languages, know little about the complexity of world events, are only interested in whats at the movies, and think the planet revolves around Washington D.C.
If there ever was an argument for letting the intellectual elite run the nation its this one. There's a reason the communists hated intellectuals, because the communists needed the unwashed stupid masses to push their agendas blindly. its no mystery that the GOP neoconservatives have Trotskyite and Marxist pasts. This is why their political platform is almost identical to traditional Soviet style idealogy. - flameboy, on 07/12/2008, -1/+6Conveniently left out of your post the main controversial part of the FISA bill: Telcom Immunity?
"The vast majority of DIGGERS are outside the scope of FISA. Unless you're a foreign entity or agent, FISA probably doesn't apply to you."
Wrong. Executive branch can now tap ANYBODY at will for 7 days before requesting authorization from the FISA court. Sort of defeats the purpose, doesn't it? Tap first, get warrant later.
And you realize that as it stands right now, ALL of American telecommunications (foreign, domestic, phone, and internet) are being piped directly to the NSA with absolutely no oversight? We _do not know_ what happens to that data. That is flagrant law breaking by Bush and the telcoms - these are FELONIES we are talking about here. Actions for which this bill gives civil immunity.
Absolutely disgraceful. Shame on you for trivializing such a powerful blow to our constitution. - nydwarf, on 07/11/2008, -1/+6So you're saying there's some Rights in the Constitution that you don't agree with?
- inactive, on 07/11/2008, -1/+6I hate it when people don't understand the point of the ACLU. They are there to keep the government from infringing upon your liberties. What a non-governmental person does to another non-governmental person is their own business.
- kenedamick, on 07/11/2008, -1/+5You silly troll.

- GrodyChamp, on 07/11/2008, -3/+7You should add Obama to the title of the story as well, since he loves it and voted for it too.
And I still can't get too behind the ACLU until they recognize the second ammendment and stop picking and choosing the things they defend based on political leaning. - Godlike, on 07/11/2008, -3/+7"...I was silent. And when they came for me, there was nobody left to speak for me."
- Midtowner, on 07/11/2008, -0/+4The NRA is much better equipped to handle 2nd Amendment issues. I'm sure the ACLU knows this and allocates its limited resources to other areas in more need of attention.
