- johnhummel, on 04/04/2008, -4/+50I don't mind if they made a lot of money after leaving the White House. My only question is - how? If we're talking "Helped to negotiate deals for big oil to avoid paying taxes, getting grants from US taxpayers", then yeah, I might have a question about that. If its "gave lots of speeches", well, that's a lot of money for speeches, but if its honestly earned, then I don't mind.
- zephyear, on 04/04/2008, -5/+35Maybe this will be the bullet to the head of the shambling corpse that is the Clinton campagn.
- MrTito, on 04/04/2008, -3/+16I hear that the tax records are to be released in the next 24 hours, as in Friday. Maybe I'm too much of a news junkie, but this seems like the classic "release bad news on Friday" move. I think it's a big mistake on Clinton's part, not that I feel sorry for her. It will be in the news for the light weekend cycle, sure. But the internet has a whole weekend to tear those records apart and a whole new swirl of bad news for Clinton is gonna break by Monday.
- u2wedge, on 04/04/2008, -2/+12I'm sure they're doctoring the documents somehow.
- oldhick, on 04/04/2008, -1/+9You could check out the uranium mining deal for contributions... http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/31/us/politics/31do ...
There's also Norman Hsu and Johnny Chung... http://www.charlotteconservative.com/index.php/200 ...
There's the military industrialist, Bernard Schwartz - http://www.newsmax.com/smith/clinton_scandals/2007 ...
But those are all donation related. I'd bet if she's willing to solicit donations in such a nefarious way then she's probably willing to earn income in equally nefarious ways. - orangedude, on 04/04/2008, -5/+12I hope Hillary's campaign gets complete trashed by the release of these tax returns, just like what happened to Geraldine Ferraro 20 years ago when she released her tax returns while running for VP.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geraldine_Ferraro - WilliamDavis, on 04/04/2008, -2/+9When did Hillary stop beating her wife?
- brownrecluse888, on 04/04/2008, -2/+8I just built a time machine out of 4 Iphones, 16 Ron Paul posters and some tooth picks. I traveled 24 hours into the future and read all of the top digg stories...here they are:
• Clinton delays releasing tax returns proving she is a lyer
• Al Gores second cousins wifes best friend's gardner endorses Obama
• Obama walks on water at press conference and cures cancer
• Doctors release Clinton's x-rays - proves she has a cyborg
• Obama wins Texas again
• King Tut wakes from the dead...first thing he does? Endorses Obama
• Fox news reports Clintons tax returns show that all her campaign donations came from a sweat shop in Bangladesh that employees 3 week old fetuses that work 23 hours a day making Walmart branded cheese puffs
• Obama raises 36 billion dollars in 4 seconds - chrissku, on 04/04/2008, -0/+4Ok.....well to me it is. I sure wish I had your jaded view of reality. Let me guess......you think 90210 was a documentary about a real high school?
- MacEnvy, on 04/04/2008, -1/+5Read the article. It said that Bill made $47 million on his big speaking tour. Don't underestimate the amount of money people are willing to pay to associate a popular former president with their organization.
- godzillaWax, on 04/04/2008, -1/+4The Clinton's have done borderline criminal things in acquiring their wealth. From the NY Times article about Bill Clinton's dealings with human rights disaster Kazakhstan:
"[Clinton was] whisked off to share a sumptuous midnight banquet with Kazakhstan’s president, Nursultan A. Nazarbayev, whose 19-year stranglehold on the country has all but quashed political dissent.
Mr. Nazarbayev walked away from the table with a propaganda coup, after Mr. Clinton expressed enthusiastic support for the Kazakh leader’s bid to head an international organization that monitors elections and supports democracy. Mr. Clinton’s public declaration undercut both American foreign policy and sharp criticism of Kazakhstan’s poor human rights record by, among others, Mr. Clinton’s wife, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York."
Full article here: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/31/us/politics/31do ... - Gridl0ck, on 04/04/2008, -5/+8While the Clintons aren't exactly poor, they're still not the same sort of rich as the Bushs. Neither of the Clintons were born with a silver spoon in their mouths.
Where's the clamour to see McCain's tax returns anyway'? - Jtheletter, on 04/04/2008, -0/+3$50 million is not their estimated net worth, it is ONE YEAR of EARNINGS. If you're making $50 million USD/year then you're probably already, or on your way to being, this nebulous "super-rich" you speak of. Does it matter? Given the median US income, anything over $1 million/yr puts you out of touch with how most of the country lives.
- jhuebel, on 04/04/2008, -0/+3Right or wrong, it would be guilt by association. Either way, she loses. If they point the finger at Bill, it tarnishes (more) her presidential bid. If they point the finger at her (middle one, preferably), then the race is over.
- stonewaljacksn, on 04/04/2008, -0/+3Raw Story=buried. Is there a site that isn't bent on being sensationalist that people can start ***** all over?
- okaroleo, on 04/04/2008, -0/+3dude!!!!! you have four iphones???!!??!!1111
- smacksaw, on 04/04/2008, -2/+4McCain and Flair, FOUR HORSEMEN! w00t!
- briankoenig03, on 04/04/2008, -0/+2"but the real negativity is coming from the Obama side."
The beginning of your post was accurate, but this last statement is delusional. "Lucky to be black", "Judas", "Not that I'm aware of", "Shame on you", ***** 3 AM fear tactics....you are saying this is overshadowed by Plouffe talking to the Drudge Report? Oh, and Hillary herself said that it was "possible" the image circulated among her staff but that it was not officially distributed.
Obama stories have certainly saturated Digg, at the risk of stories that truly deserve attention losing focus because of puff pieces like this article. Instead of hypothesizing about what the Clinton returns are going to show when and if they're released, Obama supporters' focus should be on his strengths, her weaknesses, and getting out the vote so that Clinton's already minuscule chances are further diminished. - smacksaw, on 04/04/2008, -2/+4I've thought for a while that they'd hold out until Pennsylvania. If she won, they'd have to release them, but if she doesn't win she won't release them at all - unless she manages to somehow get Obama to drop out.
- eregorn, on 04/04/2008, -0/+2Yesterday's news.... today! She already released her tax returns.
- sagat, on 04/04/2008, -3/+5I've a bad feeling that these tax returns are going to come wrapped in just enough spin to actually work in her favor. After so much being said about the returns if it turns out theres nothing abnormal about them then it will surely backfire on the Obama campaign.
- deanlowe, on 04/04/2008, -0/+2This is Digg, any bad news for Clinton will hit the front page within minutes.
- mejusthavin, on 04/04/2008, -2/+4I wonder if the media will even cover the fact that the Clinton's accept millions in 'donations' from the Saudi Monarch for the library? The Saudi Monarch, a state sponsor in terrorism in places like Israel. The same group offered US ports for purchase. Or their ties to the Carlyle Group.
- OaklandNative, on 04/04/2008, -0/+2The comment and digging systems are indeed ***** up today. Yesterday too for me.
"There was a problem completing your request. Please reload the page and try again." - measuredincm, on 04/04/2008, -0/+2You called it, dude.
http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/04/04/clin ... - absurdist, on 04/04/2008, -0/+2Offshore income? The bulk of my income is from work outside the country. Since when is that illegal, or even questionable?
- unmarked, on 04/04/2008, -1/+3Doubtful. If there was nothing to hide, she would have put them out first and then claimed Obama was hiding something. In fact, she was demanding Obama release his tax returns even without releasing hers (that's hutzpah), you know because she's already vetted and he's not.
- nonNewtonian, on 04/04/2008, -0/+1It is sickening how one-sided Digg has become. I couldn't give two ***** about who becomes the Democratic nominee, if anything, I'm probably leaning towards Obama. But let's count up how many anti-Clinton stories hit the front page, as opposed to anti-Obama stories....
- daizy82683, on 04/04/2008, -1/+2ooooooohhhhhhhhh shocking!
- jhuebel, on 04/04/2008, -0/+1Well, if they pull a Wall Street move and release the news on Friday after 5pm, I don't think it will matter much. Most people watch the news in the evenings and weekends anyway. If there's something in her tax returns that's questionable, she can't run from it.
- darkfus, on 04/04/2008, -0/+1Remember when the Bush administration was trying to sell our ocean ports to the UAE? Bill served as a consultant to the foreign interests looking for the right angle to close the deal.
One of many reasons they don't want their tax information released. - jazmatician, on 04/04/2008, -0/+1I believe they do file jointly.
- turiya04, on 04/04/2008, -0/+1"Our Constitution limits the office to two terms for President since our forefathers knew the consequences."
Uhm, not really. Washington set a precedent, quitting after two terms, that was respected up until FDR's four terms. Then we amended the Constitution to put in term limits. - ZHEStorm, on 04/05/2008, -0/+1I hope you realize the irony of your post. For one, http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23959987 - there they are, from 2000-2006. That's all Obama has in the public domain. Now, rewind a bit and go back 20 more years... that's right, you will find that Clinton has those in the public domain, Obama does not. So as of today, we now have 27 years worth of Clinton tax returns in the public domain. We have just 7 years worth of Obama returns.
I'm sorry, but you are dead wrong on this. "The Clinton's" have more of their life in the public eye than probably any other public official. So please, get over yourself. - scrtyfrk, on 04/04/2008, -3/+4Is it me or is this article full of crap?!?!? I am in no way a Clinton fan (None of the current candidates, really) but this is a puff piece on what MIGHT be in the Clinton tax returns. So they made $50 Million, then they should pay the taxes they owe AND should get the exemptions they get. If some of those are ethically questionable, that's because the Congress has made it possible for the rich to take those exemptions. Even Warren Buffett argues the tax code is rigged. If the Clintons took money from questionable sources, shame on them (and on the 99.9% other politicians who also did).
This election campaign has been one of the most moronic ones ever run. It's an entirely well orchestrated side show to make the American public forget about the crap currently going on within our government. This is exactly what the republicans want: infighting among the democrats so that they tear each other apart before November. This should have been an easy win for the democrats. How could they have screwed it so much so early?!?!?! - Herrold, on 04/04/2008, -0/+1InfoUSA - Indian Offshoring company that does a lot of business with the Clintons. You have to remember that the President who promoted the "Global Economy being good for the US worker" (almost a direct quote) was Bill Clinton.
It makes you wonder about NAFTA, as being a toe dipping testing ground for offshoring.
When your president and a Senator make a lot of Bank from companies that are undermining the strength of the US economy, you have to question how decisions are made.
Also look at Rubin, who was the Secretary of the Treasury, is now part of Citigroup. And Citigroup is not shy or worried about going hand in hat to foreign countries to beg for cash so that their bank can be bailed out of the subprime mortgage crisis.
Its a flawed economic approach.
Ask yourself this: What are the chances that the salaries being offshored by US based companies is "reinjected" or spent into the US? What does moving salaries offshore due to the overall US taxbase?
If anything, I think the Clintons should have been investigates for how they have profited from offshore $$$ due to their political office. Clearly there is a relationship. - unmarked, on 04/04/2008, -1/+2The real question is why can't Hillary get the guy who's AHEAD of her to just drop out? Maybe she's still willing to offer up the VP position (we know it ain't going to Richardson).
- jellygraph, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1Er, how exactly did you get the impression that I did not read the article?
- lgm1213, on 04/04/2008, -0/+1Bill Clinton doesn't have to pay taxes as he was president, ex-presidents don't pay taxes
- Charlotte_Web, on 04/04/2008, -1/+2I certainly hope not.
Hillary has been doing wonders for John McCain's campaign. She seems determined to take down the Democratic Party if she doesn't get the nomination.
The big revelation is not that Hillary is a liar (Gasp!!!); the problem is that the MSM is no longer covering for her, so now she's in the unusual position of having to defend/recant/run away from her lies. Conservatives have known for many years what Hillary was, and the MSM was her willing accomplice in getting away with her many lies. This is what the Clintons are, though -- it's all about them and the hell with everybody else!
If I may quote the reverend, Dr. Jeremiah Wright,
THE CHICKENS ARE COMING HOME TO ROOST! - inactive, on 04/04/2008, -1/+2Ronald Ernest Paul is also 18 letters. He shortened it to "Ron" to throw everyone off and disguise his true nature.
- mal1964, on 04/04/2008, -0/+1What story did you read and watch? " $50 million ONE YEAR of EARNINGS" Where is that quote?
"Financial disclosure documents already filed by the New York senator show she and her husband, former president Bill Clinton, have made at least $50 million since leaving the White House in 2001" - Swift2, on 04/04/2008, -1/+2Thank you, brownrecluse888, for the laugh. I think the problem I have with Obama supporters (but not with Obama) is that they're young and not very experienced. They look for something, anything to hit Hillary with, because they don't have faith in their candidate. So, who steps up? The experienced defamers of the '90s, and their leftover tales of corruption by the Clintons. None of the outrageous charges they made at the time went anywhere, and Bill didn't "lose" all his e-mail. He actually obeyed the law, even though it cost them millions to comply with all the investigations. But the right wing had a rhythm: make charges, throw outrage around, demand an investigation, demand the independent counsel investigate, and if they don't reach the proper conclusion, fire that counsel and hire another. It kept the right wing alive in the '90s, this scandal industry. They never came up with a single thing except Monica. No political corruption. No selling out of the country to the Chinese. No drug dealing at Mena.
Sadly, there are too many Obama supporters who believe those lies today, or at least use them because they don't believe, I suppose, that their candidate can win fair and square. There's been some comments from the Clinton camp, but the real negativity is coming from the Obama side. Who made the claim that Hillary leaked the Kenyan photos to Drudge, based simply on Drudge's word? Obama's campaign manager. - dumpyhumpy, on 04/04/2008, -0/+1A) They do file jointly, B) the How part of income, is spelled out clearly in the returns
- raoulduke87, on 04/04/2008, -1/+2Because the oil companies and the wealthy in business are coddled and cared for when tax time comes around. Look at the tax breaks that the oil companies get when they're providing a product that is a nessecity for almost everyone in the world. The same goes for big business. It's absolutely absurd that these people are allowed to make splendid fortunes off of the American public and then get huge tax breaks. The more money you have, the more you should have to pay back into the system to keep the economy afloat. If the current economic crisis in this country doesn't show you that, then you're either blind or you just don't want to see.
- wrxpert, on 04/04/2008, -0/+1Well this is Digg so it won't hit our front page until Tuesday.
- motivatedmama, on 04/04/2008, -0/+1Assuming it really comes to pass. We'll see.
- inactive, on 04/04/2008, -0/+1They should give it back to the poor chinamen from whom it was originally stolen by corrupt officials and given to the Clintons in return for corrupt favors.
- lgm1213, on 04/04/2008, -0/+1I agree man, i think she keeps her ducks in line for the most part because of the way she is scrutinized by the media and OBamites
- inactive, on 04/05/2008, -1/+1That's why we need to keep HRC out.
