- mlwarrior, on 01/18/2008, -0/+4Yes, thank.....God (i love the irony) that his son is crazy. I'll move out of the country if that ***** religious nutjob gets elected.
- FreddieD, on 01/17/2008, -3/+42No wonder he does all of his photo ops with Chuck Norris instead of his own family....
- AgentMull, on 01/17/2008, -7/+30You missed a key word: loaded.
- PabloMac, on 01/18/2008, -4/+16Technically, the weapon wasn't loaded, as story said there was no live round in the chamber. Thus, there is no real chance any of the 8 rounds in the magazine could have gone off. None of that takes away from the incident being very stupid on Huckabee Jr.'s part. And yes, I'm a gun nut.
- phenry50BMG, on 01/18/2008, -6/+9Loaded? Because there's a clip in? If there is nothing in the chamber, it can't be fired. I'm sure you knew that though.
- RpgActioN, on 01/18/2008, -2/+9Don't pretend like you know anything about guns, or you would know the difference between the magazine and the clip.
- Metal_Hurlant, on 01/18/2008, -0/+6Isn't a "pull back and let go" one-handed motion all that separates a gun that can't be fired from a gun that can?
In other words, is there really a point in contesting that the weapon was in fact loaded and ready to be used for all practical purposes?- Grym11, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1As I understand it, a gun is only "loaded" if a bullet is in the breach.
If you started determining whether a gun was "loaded" based upon how easily a bullet could get into the breach, then you'd probably have to also consider a gun without a magazine with the slide open and the slide lock lever engaged (i.e. a state in which most people consider the gun completely unloaded) loaded too, because one simple depression of the slide lock release button could just as easily make the gun like the one in the article ready to fire. - GeneralFault, on 01/18/2008, -0/+2You folks are all playing on the technical definition of what "is" is. If I robbed a quickymart while holding a gun that had a full clip, but no bullet in the breach, I think that the police report would indicate that I robbed the place with a loaded weapon. Even if the police were technical enough to say that the gun was not technically loaded, it would matter very little to the guy behind the counter who is staring at the business end of a weapon that for all they can tell would kill them with the pull of a trigger (of course some of you would know the difference, but likely not the person that is being threatened).
- Grym11, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1As I understand it, a gun is only "loaded" if a bullet is in the breach.
- xonahuia, on 01/17/2008, -13/+38Who needs a loaded handgun for protection when you have God on your side to protect and defend you from danger as long as you worship him?
- taybone, on 01/17/2008, -3/+7LOL. So true.

- FluentinSarcasm, on 01/18/2008, -2/+7Don't forget that he has Chuck Norris on his side!
Oh what's that? Chuck Norris is no longer of interest to the general public and nobody cares about him anymore. Now that he endorses huckabee and sues people trying to have fun with facts that he has no ownership to, he has lost all his godly powers. (Shrugs) - PopcornDave, on 01/18/2008, -9/+3Aethists?

- GeneralFault, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1The guy is just not reliable enough. Just ask any dead person.
- dcormier, on 01/17/2008, -7/+18I'm not going to saw anything about his father, but in this guy's defense it is possible that he had forgotten about the gun. I know of someone this happened to. Mistakes happen.
- PabloMac, on 01/18/2008, -9/+6Exactly. And I would rather a person licensed to carry a concealed weapon be on a plane with a handgun they "forgot" to remove from their carry-on luggage if a boxknife-wielding wacko stirs something up mid-flight. It's better to have and not need than need and not have.
- MarkOfTheDead, on 01/18/2008, -5/+6But how would you feel if that same man was talking with another passenger and the subject of torturing and maiming a dog came up, would you still feel safe knowing they had a loaded gun? I wouldn't be so scared of a guy with a box cutter then....
- TexMexMatt, on 01/18/2008, -2/+9Just because you have a license doesn't mean that you wont use it to do something stupid. That happens all the time. Forgetting is not a valid excuse especially when its something as dangerous as guns.
- PabloMac, on 01/19/2008, -0/+2Please prove that concealed permit licensees use their weapons to "do something stupid" "all the time." In your research you will find facts to the contrary.
I have carry concealed weapons for years, and have many friends who have, too. None of us fall into your "use it to do something stupid" category, and I bet you will be looking for one of us to do something unstupid if and when someone threatens the life of you and/or your loved ones. At that point, hopefully someone with a weapon and the proper training to use it will step up and commit to the only appropriate use of lethal force with a deadly weapon: in defense of life or limb.
- PabloMac, on 01/19/2008, -0/+2Please prove that concealed permit licensees use their weapons to "do something stupid" "all the time." In your research you will find facts to the contrary.
- annenk38, on 01/18/2008, -0/+9A firearm is no small item to forget about. When I was in the military, a guy in my unit "forgot" to surrender live ammo after leaving the firing range -- ended up spending 30 days busting rocks in correctional custody.
- GeneralFault, on 01/18/2008, -0/+3Forgot that you had a pair of scissors in your luggage... maybe. Forget that you have a loaded hand gun on your person... No ***** way. Anyone that would be that careless should have their license revoked.
- LeeSoong, on 01/25/2008, -0/+1Stupidity That Huge - should be a Felony offense.
You FORGOT you had a loaded, semiautomatic hand gun in your carry on bag, while going on a commercial air plane ?!?
I hope genes that stupid never reproduce,
if they did - they would forget the loaded Uzi they keep in the toy chest...
so, very, very sad.
- Mustard911, on 01/18/2008, -15/+15I don't see a problem. The constitution allows for the bearing of arms. So why are people getting so spooked byt he story. There's nothing in it other than police acting outside the real law.
I'm a support of Ron Paul, but lets be fair in this case.- hangglide, on 01/18/2008, -5/+12Fair? Accident or not, if this guy were a Muslim or of middle eastern descent I bet he would have received a lot more that a few hundred $ fine and court costs. Fair indeed.
- mindwalker, on 01/18/2008, -8/+14If one is used to carrying a handgun for self-defense it could be easy to forget to remove it when going through security. I know people who have accidentally done it. Of course, it would be prudent to double check that one is not in possession of any prohibited items before attempting to go through security, but mistakes happen. I'm no fan of Huckabee, BTW, though I am a fan of the Bill of Rights.
- bullrassler, on 01/18/2008, -1/+13Wrong! If you are used to carrying a firearm and competent, you do NOT forget where it is, you do NOT forget whether it is loaded or not. If that kind of stuff happens to you, you are probably too stupid to be allowed to handle firearms.
That said, this story isn't about Mike Huckabee - he's got his own form of dangerous idiocy I guess. As a Canadian, I read the stories about the presidential race and think, "WTF? How did those jackasses get into the horse race?" Not that Canadian politicians are much to look up to either.- mGARANDEUR1, on 01/18/2008, -4/+3Oh my god SHUT UP! I'll bet you've never actually owned any sort of firearm before (which is probably why you live in Canada).
- Endemoniada, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1"Hey! You don't know what you're talking about, and I'm going to point this out even though I know just as little about you as I claim you know about guns! Take that, you foreigner!"
- bullrassler, on 01/19/2008, -0/+1@mGARANDEUR1 - you'd lose that bet. I bought my first firearm when I was in grade 11 - from a friend in grade 10. That was back in the old days when there was no licensing or paperwork. And I've bought a number since then. If you go through the paperwork, Canadians can even own handguns - there are around a million registered handguns in Canada. But only around a hundred concealed carry permits - theoretically available, but practically not. Gun laws are strange - I can go to a gunshop and buy an SKS but someone in California can't.
- azey47, on 01/18/2008, -1/+1Canadians own a lot of guns. Hunting is popular up there.
- mGARANDEUR1, on 01/18/2008, -4/+3Oh my god SHUT UP! I'll bet you've never actually owned any sort of firearm before (which is probably why you live in Canada).
- spyd3rweb, on 01/18/2008, -6/+8He raised him to believe in the 2nd Amendment, which is damned impressive.
- GeneralFault, on 01/18/2008, -0/+2But forgot to teach him about civic responsibility or mindfullness or respect for the rules? Not very impressive.
- Brooks, on 01/18/2008, -6/+5Not that i'm particular about Huckabee, but I find fault with judging the candidate on his son. As fun as it is to nitpick at their lives, if it were me or my father, i would know better than to take Mike's adult son's faults too far in my opinion of him.
still, this sucks unbelievably for the "family" candidate.- buckrogers1965, on 01/18/2008, -3/+5I don't have a problem with judging a man by the character of his children.
If a child is ***** up it is 100% the parents fault no matter which side of the nature/nurture debate you are on.- diggrim, on 01/18/2008, -1/+2you don't have children do you
- buckrogers1965, on 01/18/2008, -3/+5I don't have a problem with judging a man by the character of his children.

- Testiculese, on 01/18/2008, -1/+2He LOOKS like a dog murderer. He also looks very religious.
- GeneralFault, on 01/18/2008, -0/+2He IS a dog murderer. http://www.snopes.com/politics/huckabee/dog.asp
- Testiculese, on 01/21/2008, -0/+2I know, I know, it's just funny that he looks exactly like the person you would envision killing animals for pleasure.
- Testiculese, on 01/23/2008, -0/+1Woops, that comment somehow got above GeneralFault's one, but I was responding to him (strange)
- Testiculese, on 01/18/2008, -1/+2He LOOKS like a dog murderer. He also looks very religious.
- loganarcher, on 01/18/2008, -7/+2I have sex with my sister...
- mbraynard, on 01/18/2008, -1/+3Well, actually, it's perfectly legal to carry a gun on a plane. You just need to check it. I do it all the time and I don't even have a CC permit.
- shupy, on 01/19/2008, -0/+3There is no one who has been awake for the last 8 years who can not understand that airports are a little jumpy about the weapons on airplanes issue.
I know someone who is a Federal agent and also carries weapons on an airplane. They are responsible, and understand that airport security must be informed. You do not "forget" where your weapon is and you cannot "forget" that weapons are an issue in airport security.
Even with a Federal ID, they occasionally have to go through a search just like everyone else.
There is something deeply dangerous about the Huckabee clan.
- shupy, on 01/19/2008, -0/+3There is no one who has been awake for the last 8 years who can not understand that airports are a little jumpy about the weapons on airplanes issue.
- siszam, on 01/18/2008, -1/+6His son is an adult. Adults are responsible for themselves. Do you still blame your mommy and daddy for everything? I don't support Huckabee but it seems like a lot of you people never learned personal responsibility or never raised a child.
- mGARANDEUR1, on 01/18/2008, -1/+1My god, who cares? So what if he made a stupid mistake and tried boarding an airplane with a gun. Everything that hits digg is always insanely exaggerated. Nobody here can say if it was intentional, or if he was just hungover and was being stupid. ***** people, keep your eyes focused on the election.

- scooby0110, on 01/17/2008, -10/+7You have taken that scripture out of context. Underline the word THEIR. Meaning (HIS) Huckabees crazy son and not the one running for president.
Also this story is over a year old. Dugg down. Digg me down if you want, but I'm just saying.- urbandistrict, on 01/17/2008, -1/+7Saying what exactly? I do not understand. How did he take it out of context?
The way I understand "by their fruits you'll know them" is a person is defined by their actions. This man's actions were wrongful, but I think it's an unfair that the father should be judged because of the doings of his adult son. One could easily argue that the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree. In this case, I feel that this guy has led a very privileged life and feels that he is above certain social restrictions. Spoiled kid syndrome is not unique to this family. - V3n0M, on 01/18/2008, -2/+2David is the fruit of Mike.

- Terra1, on 01/17/2008, -36/+23my gosh people, think about it, you to could board a plane with a nail file, over 4oz of shampoo, a bic lighter and still face the same sanctions. I think truly with all the hustle you have to do just getting to the airport, don't count yourself out when they pull you out of line and strip search you for something you have forgotten that is one of the hundreds of items that are forbidden for air travel, or because you were just picked for the pat down.
- grendelboogie, on 01/17/2008, -5/+87Okay, I buy nail file, 4 oz. shampoo bottle, other things of that ilk. But, according to his story, he grabbed the bag without looking. So, he's the kind of guy that keeps loaded Glocks in bags with a spare clip of ammo and he does it so routinely that it's easy for him to forget he's got a loaded firearm.
I'm sorry, he's an irresponsible gun owner and a moron. A loaded Glock is not the equivalent of a bic lighter.- LloydBentsen, on 01/18/2008, -1/+2What about those really sweet-ass lighters that are shaped like guns?
- OstrakonX, on 01/18/2008, -1/+2You mean those really tacky ones?

- Tenareth, on 01/18/2008, -4/+0Exactly, he didn't put a gun in his bag and then forget about it, he grabbed a prepared carry-on bag and didn't realize there was a gun in it. Since he has a carry permit it isn't unusual for him to have a handgun. Memory is an interesting item, he was grabbing a bag for a specific reason.
If someone asked "Where's your glock", I'm sure he would have known exactly where it was. - xjeffx, on 01/18/2008, -0/+5"If someone asked "Where's your glock", I'm sure he would have known exactly where it was."

- maximumrebel1, on 01/18/2008, -0/+2It was a loaded Glock dumbass. I don't see how you could forget that.

- sonicdevo, on 01/17/2008, -6/+4I'm no fan of Huckabee (despite being a conservative), but there's no conspiracy here. His son is just absent-minded / dumb.
- lycanter, on 01/18/2008, -0/+3What about the other son that brutally tortured and killed a dog while a camp counselor? I know you can't judge a man by his progency but despite that a pattern does seem to be emerging. I can't believe this guy can be serious about his candidacy. Look at the rest of his platform and history. Dubious.
- sonicdevo, on 01/20/2008, -0/+1Oh, I'll grant you; his children don't seem to be quite right. Frankly, I would only vote for the guy as an absolute last resort (and maybe not even then). Frankly this entire election cycle is discouraging. From the left side of the aisle, I disagree with every candidate's stated positions. From the right, the only two of them that I would trust (Ron Paul and Fred Thompson) don't seem to have much of a chance of getting the nomination.

- spewker, on 01/17/2008, -66/+221This happened in April, 2007 and the son had a concealed weapons permit at the time. Also, he grabbed the carry on without realizing the gun was inside. ALSO - the son is 26 - an adult in anybody's book. Huckabee is no longer responsible for him. You shouldn't blame what the son did on Huckabee and you shouldn't call Huckabee crazy on the basis of this article.
- bearsandbulls, on 01/17/2008, -14/+37I agree this shouldn't change peoples opinion of Huckabee, because they should already not like the man. His son had a weapons permit but is obviously not responsible enough for it and he seriously needs to be charged to the full extent of the law(and that means getting convicted), a gun in the airport now a days is a huge no no, any one w/o connections would be detained by the FBI for days and god knows what else.
- CabesMojo, on 01/17/2008, -7/+5Not likely, if a background check didn't turn up anything questionable they would just be fined and handled just like Huckabee was.
- Randrayla, on 01/17/2008, -1/+11Just FYI a gun in an airport is not a no no in most states. You can have a gun in the unsecured area of the airport. Trying to go through security with a firearm is just plain dumb. All you have to do is buy a locking container and you can have a handgun in your checked baggage.
- buckrogers1965, on 01/18/2008, -5/+1Not loaded you can't.
- Randrayla, on 01/18/2008, -1/+3What kind of moron are you? Go do some research before you spout off BS. You just hate guns, admit it. You can in fact carry a loaded handgun in the non-secured area of an airport in most states. In Indiana and a few other states you can even carry openly IE everyone can see your weapon in plain view. What the hell do I know though, I am just an Indiana law enforcement officer.
BTW You can check a pistol in your checked baggage to. I'm sure you will say that I am wrong on that to though.

- swaddict, on 01/17/2008, -7/+50No, I don't need this article to call him crazy, there is a lot of other evidence
- cbuddha42, on 01/17/2008, -2/+6Great, so if we don't need this to call him crazy why is a 9 months old news story on the front page?
- bk1808, on 01/17/2008, -3/+10so umm is mr. huckabee to blame for his teenage son brutally murdering a dog when he was in boy scouts? or was he not responsible at all for that either?
- cybrguy, on 01/17/2008, -11/+3The dog thing, is another subject entirely. Which was also bad, but also blown out of perportion by many. And the term Murder is reserved for humans, unless you are PETA and think animals should be equal to humans in all regards. Of course we know they are full of ***** there since they "kill" more animals than almost any other similar organization.
- Amoveo, on 01/18/2008, -0/+7Torturing and brutally ending the life as you would call it of an animal is a bad sign on a person. People who are sociopaths often torture animals in a similar manner and the fact that you don't regret torturing and killing an animal probably doesn't mean you hold life in general in high regard.
- buckrogers1965, on 01/18/2008, -1/+2Normally it takes years of sexual abuse to make someone the kind of person that can brutally torture and kill a dog.
- highstriker, on 01/18/2008, -0/+3I don't have a problem with killing animals IF someone is hunting, or if it is done in self defense. What this man did was definitely neither of the above scenarios. There is absolutely no excuse for hanging, beating and cutting a dog's throat. (It's been awhile since I read the article, but I do believe those are the exact things stated that Huckabee did to this dog)
I'm not a member of PETA- but that doesn't mean that I think it's right to torture any living creature. It's sick and disgusting.
- cybrguy, on 01/17/2008, -11/+3The dog thing, is another subject entirely. Which was also bad, but also blown out of perportion by many. - cybrguy, on 01/17/2008, -11/+10OMG someone who read the article and understood it!
If you are a cop or a concealed carrier then this mistake is bound to happen once or twice in your lifetime, it just unfortunately for him happened at an airport. Personally, I don't think this should even reflect that badly on Huckabee Jr. assuming he told the truth.
Old news blown out of perportion by improper perspective.- Humptydank, on 01/18/2008, -2/+13No, it isn't "bound to happen once or twice in your lifetime."
Rule 1 is YOU DON'T FORGET ABOUT YOUR HANDGUN. If it's not in the gun safe then the first thought in your frontal lobe all day is "where is my gun?" If a person can't handle that then then they should not have a carry license, and if they screw it up, even once, then they should have it taken away.
Everyone who has a carry license already knows that and accepts it.- cybrguy, on 01/18/2008, -0/+3Very good you understand common sense, kinda like how the first rule of flying a plane is to not forget where the stick is. I was talking probability, not gun rules or theory.
Just because you understand "rules" and try to follow them doesn't mean that you wont mess up. Thats why I qualified my statement with lifetime. If you are a carrier for a lifetime you WILL VERY LIKELY mess up sometime. There is no perfect carrier just as there is no perfect person. I'm a carrier, I'll admit I've messed up. My roomate is a carrier, he has messed up. Our mess ups were minor compared to his, but it happens. You want to give me a probability since it obviously cant be anywhere near 1 mess up every 35 years?
People F up, get used to it.

- NotAChickenHawk, on 01/17/2008, -1/+12Ok, I understand that he had a permit for this gun and a permit to carry it concealed etc. But what I don't get is: "Also, he grabbed the carry on without realizing the gun was inside." So he had a loaded gun lying around without knowing where it was? Shouldn't we be reserving gun permits for people a little more responsible and safety concious than this suggests that he is? Of coures this doesn't have anything to do with Mike Huckabee's campaign, people should vote for him or not based on his own merits.
- ramiro, on 01/18/2008, -7/+1What Spewker said is perfect reasonable and makes sense. Quick, diggers, bury it!
- Math, on 01/18/2008, -1/+4I agree that Huckabee's not directly to blame for this and it doesn't make him 'crazy', but any Presidential candidate should at least be able to raise a decent child, otherwise what chance do they have to run the country?
Anyone's kid will have the odd f**k up, but what kind of person tries to bring a loaded gun onto a plane, and tortures dogs?
Surely anyone who wants to be president should at the very least (before even considering if their beliefs match your own):
- Be well educated, and generally intelligent.
- Be diplomatic, even tempered, and generally get on well with people.
- Not f**k up too much raising a family (If they have one).
- Have an overall successful record on their past endeavours, whether they be in the army, leading an organisation or running a company, as a senator, diplomat, etc...
- Have zero involvement in any crime, corruption, or any other dodgy practices.
You are after all talking about someone who will lead the largest economic power in the world. - s14rider, on 01/18/2008, -2/+3If he cant even manage his son how is he gonna manage the country? tell me *****!!!
- maremv, on 01/18/2008, -0/+3Yea, cut him a break, He was probably just going to go show the boy scouts how to kill a dog the right way.
- highstriker, on 01/18/2008, -1/+5I'm more concerned about the fact that he seemed to get off so easily. And that reflects my views on his father, because I believe this is the second time he's gotten away with something with no more than a slap on the wrist for doing something wrong. I guarantee you, that if someone else did this, they'd be facing a lot more than a couple hundred dollars worth of fines, and a year of probation. Especially if said person was of a different race. It makes me very uncomfortable to think that a politician's family can get away with just about anything, and the fact that Huckabee has allowed his influence to be used in such a way will definitely affect my views on him when he claims to be such a moral person.
His son should be treated no differently than anyone else in this nation. And as long as he gets away with such actions, because of who his father is, then I will continue to use that as evidence as to why Huckabee should not be elected, because he, and his family, have no problem abusing their power and influence. - brad3378, on 01/18/2008, -3/+3Doesn't anybody in the Huckabee family know how to properly handle a gun? Nobody that doesn't know where their handgun is at all times should own a handgun. Especially a LOADED gun at an AIRPORT.
It's not even legal to have a loaded gun LOCKED in the glove box of your car so it sure as hell shouldn't be trivial to have a loaded one unlocked at an airport.

- cybrguy, on 01/17/2008, -1/+3This isn't *****, its ***** when a middle eastern "looking" American IS charged to the full extent of the law.
Just because one person gets screwed by the system doesn't mean everyone else should be screwed by the system. - Humptydank, on 01/18/2008, -0/+4But the point is that if someone of middle eastern descent, or a Muslim, were to get caught doing this they wouldn't be charged to the fullest extent of the law, they would be charged *beyond* the fullest extent of the law.
The United States government now has the ability to designate anyone, even US citizens, as "enemy combatants" if they can relate their actions in any way to anything that appears to be terrorism. With that simple designation, every right you have under US law disappears -- habeas corpus, fair trial, representation by an attorney, and you can be taken to any number of locations by the government, including Guantanamo, for*ev*er.
So this guy's a garden-variety idiot, but let's not forget that if you are of middle eastern descent, or Muslim, or simply get caught making the wrong mistake and don't have a good PR firm, the law has no limits anymore.

This is not the first time Paul has veered into potentially insensitive territory. In 1992, a copy of his newsletter, the Ron Paul Survival Report, criticized the judicial system in Washington, D.C., before adding, "I think we can safely assume that 95 percent of black males in that city are semi-criminal or entirely criminal." Under a section headlined "Terrorist Update," the following sentence ran, "If you have ever been robbed by a black teenaged male, you know how unbelievably fleet-footed they can be."

He is the legal owner and has a carry permit.- highstriker, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1I'm just curious, but do you defend people who leave guns lying around that are later involved in accidents where a kid finds and accidentally shoots him/herself? There's a big difference between a gun and a knife, and if someone is allowed to carry a gun they had better know where it is at all times.
