- mookman5, on 06/11/2009, -5/+57"because they constitute property involved in money laundering transactions and illegal gambling offenses," according to the AP.
What basis can they say money laundering was involved? Seizing peoples hard earned money is wrong, but doing it during a time when many are on a tight budget to begin with is criminal. There are many more problems during this economic crises that should be addressed and htis is a waste of time and money by out government. If they need money so desperately, why not regulate and tax it? Seems only logical, but instead they are the moral police now too. I am ashamed at how the U.S. government has failed all the citizens of this country. - DavidNiven, on 06/12/2009, -11/+48How dare these people spend their own hard-earned dollars as they see fit?!?
How dare they not get permission from their overlords in the government?
After all, people are not smart enough to live their own lives without massive government bureaucracy making sure that they get taxed, regulated, and managed into compliant, weak minions.

By the way, I'm waiting for the Obama apologists to somehow explain how this regulation is good for us. And don't bring up Bush. He's no longer president. - zKman, on 06/12/2009, -2/+39You guys are blaming Obama? No, you should be thanking the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act signed by Bush in 2006 for shutting down most online poker venues, Wire Act of 1961, and the Illegal Gambling Business Act of 1970. Obama can't overturn these law unless Congress overturns them.
- runninbroke, on 06/12/2009, -14/+47Change we can believe in! Yea right. I like the way our government is stepping in there and protecting the citizens by seizing money that was earned by people enjoying a hobby through playing online poker! For many of us, after a day at work, playing online poker is a way to relax and unwind. Oh well, thanks big brother. I have an idea, why doesnt our government concentrate on issues like, IRAQ, NORTH KOREA, rising gas prices, our crumbling economy, etc...... What a shame! Eric Holder, where are you? End the madness.
- tbrand86, on 06/12/2009, -3/+31I'm not a big gambler, and I've never used an online poker site because personally it's not for me. However, this really makes my blood boil. Gov't has no right freezing assets of the citizens. Go after the companies if you want, but this is ridiculous. Desperate and money hungry.
- Vodd9, on 06/11/2009, -9/+34Repeat after me: "I am free."
- 4NDr01D, on 06/12/2009, -1/+24you are free
to do what we tell you - krc1, on 06/12/2009, -4/+27And what did this "crackdown" accomplish? A minor inconvenience and a little more cost of doing business for the poker sites and absolutely nothing else. The vast majority of poker players affected have already had checks reissued. The best part? Most of the players involved have gotten 10%-20% "bonuses" for their trouble and are also being reimbursed for any and all bounced check charges by their bank. NOTE TO GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS AND LUNATIC FRINGE ELEMENTS OF THE RELIGIOUS RIGHT: When you think about or hear the word "Prohibition", go read up on the "Volstead Act."
- grapesofbaath, on 06/12/2009, -0/+20It's so ridiculous that we don't allow online poker to operate in the US. All of our laws involving gambling are completely retarded. Gambling is immoral! So you can't do it! ......except on Indian reservations or on a body of water. Yes, a casino sitting on top of a barge is now moral gambling! It makes perfect sense!
- idc5, on 06/12/2009, -2/+21legalize and tax. idiotic government bureaucracy bs
- censormagnet, on 06/12/2009, -1/+16wow this is the biggest freaking ***** ive seen yet.. federal government just CANT STAND people have ANY FREEDOM whatsoever. no freedom, no liberty, no rights.. this is not a free country anymore, we are ruled, we are dominated by a tyrannical banking oligarchy
- inactive, on 06/12/2009, -1/+15Simple reason they are doing this:
They CAN NOT TAX THAT MONEY because they have no authority to seek financial records from companies outside the US. - hblask, on 06/12/2009, -5/+18Online poker is not illegal in the US, and it never has been.
Obama could stop this if he wanted, but he wants to micromanage everyone's life just like Bush did. - krc1, on 06/12/2009, -2/+15"What's amazing is that a business that takes in 9 to 12 billion a year from the US only has about 30 million in payouts to make. It's completely bizarre."
You're uh, kidding, right? This seizure was checks in three accounts of ONE payment processor for ONE week. The poker sites use DOZENS of processors who have HUNDREDS/THOUSANDS of accounts all over the world. How about doing a little research before posting crap like this and looking like an utter moron. - Mothrog, on 06/12/2009, -1/+12FTA: 'The fact is, there is no federal law against playing online poker," he said. '
- BaileyCowboy, on 06/12/2009, -0/+11Ahem, gambling is immoral ONLY when you don't participate in the state run lotteries. Then -- it's A OK!
- rushiku, on 06/12/2009, -1/+12One federal agent said: "We're not getting our share and it's just not fair!" before throwing himself on the ground, kicking and screaming.
- govsucks, on 06/12/2009, -1/+12In other news:
Play the Federal Lottery,
Thousands of cash prize winners!
Mandatory for all citizens! - diggitydoc, on 06/12/2009, -5/+15signed into law by Bush in 2006... fail at timetables!
- DaveAtDigital, on 06/12/2009, -1/+11It’s only considered laundering because it can’t be taxed…and the taxes would be almost impossible to collect.
Hopefully poker will start to be considered a game of skill, and not continue to fall under the stigma of gambling. - inactive, on 06/12/2009, -1/+11Why is everyone begging the government to regulate and tax everything. Have you people lost your minds? Yes, they should legalize marijuana, gambling and prostitution ... but NOT TAX IT! Enough with the TAXES! Here's a novel thought, cut spending and you won't have to raise taxes. That's what I do and that's what billions of other people do around then world when having cash flow problems. And why the demand for regulation? Enough with the government regulation too!
- Mothrog, on 06/12/2009, -0/+91) He voted for the ***** law.
2) It's his government that is pursuing it.
How is he not to blame? I guess since the Republicans had power for the past 8 years, anything, past, present, or future is their fault. - Mothrog, on 06/12/2009, -1/+10Just so everyone knows, in addition to enforcing the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, Obama also voted to pass it. He's far from blameless.
- PanicAK, on 06/12/2009, -0/+9Way to be narrow minded.
- FKnight, on 06/12/2009, -0/+8@stubear
"Gambling is NOT a good career move typically as most people lose money not make money."
This statement can be made of stock and options trading as well. In fact, this statement can be made about "starting a business." Most people aho start a business lose money, not make money.
Furthermore, it is quite presumptuous for you to make an assumption as to others' abilities. If someone knows exactly what they are doing, they can make money from playing poker in just as stable a manner as flipping burgers or managing a retail business and not lose any money at all.
Professional poker players aren't guys sitting in the garage with a beer dropping their paycheck from the plant on the table and gambling it with their friends or taking a weekend trip to Vegas and blowing their mortgage payments.
"Professional" has a definition. - hawk0168, on 06/12/2009, -9/+17What the ***** is up with all these Obama hater freaks in here? Grow up.
- CodeCobalt, on 06/12/2009, -0/+8That is pretty absurd. Some sites I used to play on allowed players to enter tournaments for free, if you win get a free buy-in to a money game, and if you win that you win the $$$ without ever spending a penny. That is not gambling, yet your funds could be seized just as easily.
- rehkcts, on 06/12/2009, -0/+8Guess it's time to treat online cash games as play money, since I can't withdraw anymore.
- FujoGusto, on 06/12/2009, -1/+9All gambling should be legal everywhere in the United States.
- kurtwinter, on 06/12/2009, -0/+8Obviously gambling is illegal in this country. That's why whenever you go into a gas station, you never have to wait for someone playing scratch-offs or picking numbers. Wait, what?
- Mothrog, on 06/12/2009, -0/+8Yes.
- scurvydog00, on 06/12/2009, -0/+8You know who Moneymaker is, you've watched it on TV. You don't sound like one of the standard ban hammer types. My guess is you are a frustrated losing poker player.
- marmotjmarmot, on 06/12/2009, -0/+8Lotteries are taxes for Stupid people who are bad at math.
Poker is a game of chance and skill, that requires thought.
so why do we have state lotteries? - nismerf, on 06/12/2009, -0/+8All I know is that this crackdown somehow cost me money, to do something I did not care about, and want them to do. I bet, if I were to go to one of these nefarious gambling sites, I would get more for my money, than say what I get for my tax dollars. At least they are telling me there is a chance I may lose the money and not feeding me boldfaced lies.
- govtdoesnotwork, on 06/12/2009, -0/+7"Duke" Cunningham's political benefactors used the same method to pay him off in meatspace poker games.
Online poker is a lot like weed. It hurts nobody who doesn't choose it, but the control freak lobby is hysterically COSTING taxpayers money on something that could MAKE tax money, and it's supremely stupid. When Dr. Ron Paul & Barney Frank agree that something's really dumb, it's been my experience they're always right, whether or not the rest of the congresscritters vote against the really dumb idea. - iskin, on 06/12/2009, -0/+7I've made about $1.5m in the past 5 years. I have no degree... *****, I took the GED because I was expelled from high school for defending myself. Where else is someone like me going to make that kind of money?
Poker as a career does have it's problems. Like most people that play professionally, I would suggest against it. It isn't very fulfilling, and it eventually becomes the most boring, and stressful, job in the world. Going to sleep after losing $100k in a day isn't easy.
As a hobby, poker isn't that bad. Most players lose what they can afford, and except that they wont make a lot of money from it. Hell, most people play the micro stakes, and lose less than $400 a year playing poker.
The Government is overstepping it's boundaries with online poker. Just because something causes problems, doesn't mean you can make it better. Just because something causes problems doesn't mean that the majority of people that play have those problems, and they shouldn't have to suffer for the minority. - marmotjmarmot, on 06/12/2009, -0/+7if: ***** is legal
and: selling is legal
How is selling ***** not?
Thanks to George Carlin. - DirtyVicar, on 06/12/2009, -0/+7Why are Americans so enamored with government messing around in their personal business? Vote out all those legislators who crack down on personal freedoms, and phone their offices letting them know you'll be voting them out.
Also maybe we should circulate a list of representatives and senators who created bills like these. - Mothrog, on 06/12/2009, -2/+9And voted for by Obama.
And enforced by Obama's Department of Justice. - chukd, on 06/12/2009, -1/+8Bush didn't decide to seize money and take legal action. Last time I checked, Obama's Justice Department is doing this.
- ethanji22, on 06/12/2009, -2/+9Doesn't mean the other party doesn't support it as well. Who made the law?- a democratic Congress which included an Obama yeah vote. Blame falls on both parties. Fail at understanding the full process...
- Mothrog, on 06/12/2009, -0/+6"Obama can't overturn these law unless Congress overturns them."
Yeah, but he could deprioritize their enforcement, kinda like he did when it came to medical marijuana dispensaries. - gixxer600, on 06/12/2009, -0/+6Wow this district attorney has nothing better to do than this *****...........pisses me off. Just give them back their money
- inactive, on 06/12/2009, -0/+6At least the mob usually has a service people want.
- jblade, on 06/12/2009, -0/+6Who you think lobbied for these.... casinos of course.
- inactive, on 06/12/2009, -0/+6Yes.
- bigfatdummy, on 06/12/2009, -0/+6Gambling destroys families... Ban it. Drinking destroys families... Ban it. Smoking destroys families... Ban it. Obesity destroys families... Ban it. Online Gaming destroys families... Ban it. Working long hours destroys families... Ban it....
- Mothrog, on 06/12/2009, -1/+7"Never mind torture or illegal wars or anything."
Last time I looked, Gitmo was still open and Obama had sent more troops in. - govtdoesnotwork, on 06/12/2009, -0/+5The people who are smart enough to give a ***** took that money. They deserved it, too.
- govtdoesnotwork, on 06/12/2009, -0/+5Regardless of poker's impurities compared to chess, professional poker players' existence implies the skill element is substantial. I know of no professional lottery players but I'd love to be one.
The only reasonable comparison to today's poker pros might be the (in?)famous MIT blackjack professional types who keep getting booted-out of casinos because they're winning against the house instead of against other players. -
