- SeeingtheLight, on 08/29/2008, -3/+114It was probably higher. I, and several people I know, watched it on CSPAN
- c010rb1indusa, on 08/30/2008, -3/+98It says something when a political speech beats the American Idol finale's ratings...especially when it's about an hour long. So he beat out the most popular show on television and manages to grab peoples attention for more than 15 minutes, that's pretty dope!
- MsLaurel, on 08/29/2008, -3/+76Not only were people watching Obama on CSPAN, they were watching him on the Internet..
Pedro: Of course something can be done. Do your homework or read my latest digg on how green energy creates jobs that can't be outsourced: The more green energy spreads across the country, the more jobs we have, the healthier the local economies, the more reasonable our utilities. Then we need electric cars .. . . And we stop transferring our money out of the country to get oil! . . . . The tax codes are just waiting to be made progressive. All that has been done can be undone. The deficit will be paid down --just make sure you vote Democrat for the next 20 years. . . . - ssj2119, on 08/30/2008, -1/+58More people watched it than they watched the Beijing opeining ceremony... now that's saying something. And I'm sure that 38m number is just Americans, alot of international people watched too
- purelithium, on 08/30/2008, -0/+55.... and in other news, A whopping 38 people watched McCain's speech on friday simply because they lost the remote...
- Gemfinder, on 08/30/2008, -1/+45CSPAN rules.
We watched that channel at our party last night. Sooooo nice to not have to sift through the talking, spinning heads.
You don't have to support the corporate media cabal! CSPAN is your tax dollars at work, watch that and don't get double-dipped! - snareguy17, on 08/30/2008, -0/+35I watched it online the next day, how many others did that aren't added into that count?
- TedinAsia, on 08/30/2008, -6/+40He looked good... Presidential.
- pedro9, on 08/29/2008, -17/+50I'm only sorry that Obama didn't bash the Bush Crime family for what they really are. Murderers. Torturers. Cazillionaires profiting off of the war. And really dumbasses. Tell it like it really is. They've pretty much destroyed our country and nothing can be done to reverse it by anyone. Sad.
- lsumed, on 08/29/2008, -1/+333.5 million watched it on PBS, so add that to the total.
- inactive, on 08/30/2008, -3/+34It's over for McCain.
- KingGorilla, on 08/30/2008, -1/+27Real men watch CSPAN
- inactive, on 08/30/2008, -1/+23Hello USA. Don't ***** it up this time.
Love,
The World - ajmaximus, on 08/30/2008, -2/+23"polulation"? lol
38,000,000
^that is the highest number for any political event.
remember, americans aren't normally given to spending hours watching political coverage on tv, its usually american idol and nfl, that bring in those kind of numbers.
so yes, it is a BIG deal. - duckley, on 08/30/2008, -0/+19And don't forget OVERSEAS American citizens (at least 6 million).
Worldwide, including non-US citizens, the viewer numbers were probably 100 million. - llamasonic, on 08/30/2008, -3/+2038 million in the USA. Worldwide, I estimate more than a billion would have watched. I'm in Malaysia and CNN aired it live and repeated the full speech later that evening. Hello World, Meet CHANGE.
- pocee, on 08/29/2008, -2/+18It establishes the bar for Sen McCain.
- allnone, on 08/30/2008, -0/+16Since they can't vote in America, I would imagine so.
- zeblith, on 08/30/2008, -1/+17He's not campaigning against Bush. His opponent is McCain. Just in case you didn't know that.
Yes, they are similar, but he doesn't really gain capital from purely bashing Bush. - Berkana, on 08/30/2008, -0/+15Thank you for the touch of accountability there, which is needed to keep all sides honest. Granted, factcheck is an equal opportunity scrutinizer, but Obama is still far better than McCain.
- Aliwalla, on 08/30/2008, -4/+17What a load of biased crap.
"He said McCain, far from being a maverick who’s "broken with his party," has voted to support Bush policies 90 percent of the time. True enough, but by the same measure Obama has voted with fellow Democrats in the Senate 97 percent of the time."
Could someone honestly miss the point of a comment that badly? - kgreen69er, on 08/30/2008, -0/+13I count on Nov. 4 and I watched it on the net.
- SeeingtheLight, on 08/29/2008, -3/+16Relevant if every individual watched a private television -- including infants and children, and each individual was connected to Nielsen. Otherwise, yes, at least 10% of the U.S. population.
- mrzeero, on 08/30/2008, -8/+20Diebold > Acceptance Speech
- EtherGnat, on 08/30/2008, -0/+12In the past 24 hours Google News returns 325,359 results for Obama.
In the past 24 hours Google News returns 16,024 results for Palin.
You fail. - csonger, on 08/30/2008, -0/+12Obama does something that we have not had in a long time: He gives a speech that he believes and who's delivery does not make you wince. Bush Jr makes you wince. Clinton made you wonder if he really believed it or was saying it for political gain. Bush Sr made you go to sleep. Ronald Reagan was the last president who had Obama's mix of sincerity and oratory.
The point is this: People watched in part because of this mix of sincerity and oratory and that is a qualification to be president. I assure you that our democracy would be a better place if more people tuned into the state of the union address if they listened to major speeches by the president. Even if you disagree with the policy, listening makes you better informed and more fit to perform your civic duties. - Killer57, on 08/30/2008, -3/+15I find it interesting that you are speaking out against political parties in the United States, yet you are basing your vote on McCain on grounds that the "democratic party isn't what it used to be", how is that being independent minded. Also the fact that you characterized Bush's first term (Democrats took over congress in 2006) as going "well" is a shocking statement to say the least, considering that Bush invaded a sovereign nation on lies.
- Gemfinder, on 08/30/2008, -1/+12It's a hair over 10%. Or one person in ten in this country, in street-level terms.
Does the study count individual television sets or average out the number of people watching each of those sets?
For example, the McDonald Theatre downtown had one set, and 1,000 people watching it. My own watch party had one set and about 21 people watching it.
If they're counting television sets on, then it's easily one person in 10. Maybe closer to as many as one person in 6 or 7. - pinchduck, on 08/30/2008, -3/+14That's the way to win an eleciton. Get on a stage and go on a diatribe. I preferred his message of hope, of looking towards the future, of outlining the goals he wishes to accomplish. It was a great piece of rhetoric. I doubt he will be able to carry out most of it, but it was a great agenda setting speech. Getting up there and pouring venom into TVs across the nation would have made McCain very happy. Look at it this way: it didn't really work very well for Kerry, did it?
- DylanLIGHTS, on 08/30/2008, -0/+11It is so encouraging to see/know that so many people are passionate about this election and what it means to America. Good job USA! Now lets carry this energy to election day and turn out to voting poll sites in record numbers!
- BossKey, on 08/30/2008, -0/+11You mean all the liberals who passed the bills during the time when the Republicans controlled the Presidency and Congress?
- nemo001, on 08/30/2008, -0/+10The German audience was very large.
- acroyear2, on 08/29/2008, -2/+12Soo, 10.000000000000007% then?
Either way, an amazing night. - inactive, on 08/30/2008, -1/+11I think this pretty much proves that McCain has no chance of winning. All the "polls" showing McCain pulling ahead have got to be phoney.
- Darusame, on 08/30/2008, -9/+19I'm sure the international audience for the Beijing Olympics Opening Ceremony was a lot larger than Obama's acceptance speech.
- zeblith, on 08/30/2008, -0/+10How dare you. "Obushma"? Think you're being clever?
- igtats, on 08/30/2008, -0/+9Definitely higher. We watched it on PBS because CNN had way too many commentaries talking over the actual event.
- mikesoba, on 08/30/2008, -0/+9I have +/-500 channels, are you kidding?
And the Olympics was on 7 channels on DirecTV
Get into the 21st century with the rest of us. - DD2CC2U, on 08/30/2008, -2/+11Pat Buchanan praises Obama
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0Fru4dZLGA - phrenzy, on 08/30/2008, -0/+9Wow you're a ***** powerhouse of white hot wit: Democrats are socialists.
That's ALMOST as original as "Republicans are Nazis!!1!"
BTW - You would have been frothing at the mouth calling JFK (not to mention FDR) a "socialist" back then too, so don't try to boost some kind of non-insanity cred by claiming "dems used to be ...." You are just a partisan nut Bush supporter and you probably voted for him twice, which automatically makes your words worth *****. - CeeAyy, on 08/30/2008, -0/+9Something is really wrong with you. This is not about liberals and neocons. If you can't see what a horrible situation this country is in because of the current President, then there is no helping you.
Just for the sake of argument, what bills are you talking about? As far as I can tell, the majority of problems that we have right now are related to an illegal war. Do you have any facts to back up your interesting claims? Do you really think that this President is so weak and has been forced to follow the Democratic party, which did not have a majority and has no real power? Do you really think that this President has been a wimp? Do you really think that the President hasn't accomplished the majority of what he set out to do? Really?
People like you are exactly what is wrong with the USA. If you would let go of party loyalty and really see things for what they are, you would help this country by making better choices. Prejudice like yours is killing the US. As long as you see things as liberals vs neocons, you will make choices based on party loyalty instead of what is right or helpful. BTW, I say neocon because the current administration is not truly conservative. They have fought for, and won, a large amount of change in this country and if you have been paying attention you would see that it has not been for the better. Unless you are wealthy, this administration has been a disaster. Mitch77, are you wealthy or just really that blind to reality? I'm guessing that you are not wealthy... - wastelander, on 08/30/2008, -1/+9"first few years of presidency went well"
WTF? why do you think the dems won back congress in the 1st place?
..democrat my ass - inactive, on 08/30/2008, -1/+9Are they voting in the US elections?
Didn't think so. - se1zure, on 08/30/2008, -0/+8does anyone have a link to the torrent or something? I had to work, so unfortunately, I couldn't watch the speech.
edit: I was being lazy. Here is a link for those interested:

A friend of mine sells "green phone service" to replace your regular phone service. New job, right there.
- davidaod, on 08/30/2008, -0/+8I watched it with my Dad live on CNN at 3:00AM in Ireland. =)
- yolishemp, on 08/30/2008, -1/+8I disagree i am a canadian living in the uk and addicted to the internet getting inspire by obama speech i have listened to all his speeches serveral times it motivates me.

Yolisamazinghemp - DFutureIsNow, on 08/30/2008, -2/+9Actually it was closer to 45 - 50 million the MSM is just trying to bring his numbers down.
- Berkana, on 08/30/2008, -0/+7In the first year of his presidency, months before 9/11, he planned the invasion and occupation of Iraq. Bush was evil from the very start, and McCain will simply continue in his idiotic rut.
Bush planned the war from the first National Security Council meeting, 10 days after his inauguration:
