Houston, Texas - UglieJosh, on 10/11/2007, -23/+219It is time to stand up, but people are too complacent and apathetic to do so. We know what needs to be done, but everyone is comfortable and distracted. Nobody wants to risk being the person to stand up, especially with legislation like this built to screw over anyone who tries. Just remember, they can't stop all of us.
We need to get mad. We deserve to be mad. I'll leave you with the words of Howard Beale, which are more relevant today then they were 31 years ago.
"I don't have to tell you things are bad. Everybody knows things are bad. It's a depression. Everybody's out of work or scared of losing their job. The dollar buys a nickel's worth; banks are going bust; shopkeepers keep a gun under the counter; punks are running wild in the street, and there's nobody anywhere who seems to know what to do, and there's no end to it.
We know the air is unfit to breathe and our food is unfit to eat. And we sit watching our TVs while some local newscaster tells us that today we had fifteen homicides and sixty-three violent crimes, as if that's the way it's supposed to be!
We all know things are bad -- worse than bad -- they're crazy.
It's like everything everywhere is going crazy, so we don't go out any more. We sit in the house, and slowly the world we're living in is getting smaller, and all we say is, "Please, at least leave us alone in our living rooms. Let me have my toaster and my TV and my steel-belted radials, and I won't say anything. Just leave us alone."
Well, I'm not going to leave you alone.
I want you to get mad!
I don't want you to protest. I don't want you to riot. I don't want you to write to your Congressman, because I wouldn't know what to tell you to write. I don't know what to do about the depression and the inflation and the Russians and the crime in the street.
All I know is that first, you've got to get mad.
You've gotta say, "I'm a human being, goddammit! My life has value!"
So, I want you to get up now. I want all of you to get up out of your chairs. I want you to get up right now and go to the window, open it, and stick your head out and yell,

and I'm not going to take this anymore!!" - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -22/+203I'M IN UR WITEHOWZE STEELING UR RITES

- spooky47, on 10/11/2007, -1/+64"Our safety, our liberty, depends upon preserving the Constitution of the United States as our fathers made it inviolate. The people of the United States are the rightful masters of both Congress and the courts, not to overthrow the Constitution, but to overthrow the men who pervert the Constitution." - Abraham Lincoln
- jazzjeff, on 10/11/2007, -12/+61Laugh and knock those that are warning about those allowing human rights to be slowly dwindled down.
See where it gets you in 3 years! Don't say you weren't warned. Laws are very hard to repeal!
First they came for the Socialists, and I didn’t speak up, because I wasn’t a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I didn’t speak up, because I wasn’t a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I didn’t speak up, because I wasn't a Jew.
Then they came for me, and there was no one left to speak up for me.
Martin Niemöller - stolenisotope1, on 10/11/2007, -5/+48Wow... a politician posting on digg... especially a Texan one....
- superrcat, on 10/11/2007, -31/+69Jesus. This story has been posted like 8 times on the front page in the last 3 days.
- chippyk, on 10/11/2007, -6/+43It dawned on me and sent a chill down my spine. Why is the oversight and enforcement of this Executive Order being handled by the Secretary of the Treasury. What does tax collection and minting money have to do with enforcing an anti-protesting order? Well, the Department of the Treasury is the department in charge of the Secret Police, I mean Secret Service. How much more Gestapo-like does this have to get before we take action? Poem (source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_they_came...): "When the Nazis came for the communists, I remained silent; I was not a communist. When they locked up the social democrats, I remained silent; I was not a social democrat. When they came for the trade unionists, I did not speak out; I was not a trade unionist. When they came for me, there was no one left to speak out." - Pastor Martin Niemöller (1892–1984) All of these groups were seized under the guise of being "terrorists". How long until you're considered a "terrorist", or I'm considered a "terrorist" simply for posting an anti-war comment on digg? Should I be scared? YES!!!!! Now, my American right to protest anything I want is gone and the Secret Service, under authority of the Treasury Department, and ultimately Mr. Bush, can come and arrest me and seize my stuff without Due Process, and essentially shut down my life. This sucks....I'm moving to Canada. Wait, the're screwed also. Soon we'll all be a part of the North American Union, but that's another comment for another time (although we're running out of that too).

- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -18/+47Its a dupe but people really need to know about this, its that damn important. Digg needs a stickies option :p
Digging it anyway - Ultramagnus0001, on 10/11/2007, -1/+29Call your two Senators. Call your Congressman. RAISE HELL! - but for God’s sake, don’t go out into the streets and smash in store windows to vent your frustration. That would deliver the perfect excuse for Bush to take your stuff away from you, or to have you arrested as a “terrorist” under the Military Commissions Act.
- worldinmyeyes, on 10/11/2007, -8/+34Yes, this story is hitting the front page again, but so what? You don't have to click on it, nor do you have to post your whine. Just ignore it - like I do with stories that don't interest me.
Our country is really in a dangerous spot. It has been hijacked by a rogue government that has already shown it is capable of staging false-flag terrorism inside the US to achieve its goals. These people are doing everything they can to destroy the Constitution, erase our borders and sovereignty, and eventually bring us into a global government. You think that's conspiracy crap, well check into the North American Union/Security Prosperity Partnership that our media ignores.
Tell as many people as possible to wake up, and be informed. The media won't do it. The politicians won't do it. WE have to do it. As Thomas Jefferson said, "A Nation's best defense is an educated citizenry." The apathy and ill-informed nature of our country is our biggest downfall right now. - lsatkins, on 10/11/2007, -5/+31I thought that's why the Democrats told us to vote for them last November? Are you telling me they're not doing what they promised?!?!?

- StringyLow, on 10/11/2007, -3/+18Yeah, read section 5 of the order.
It makes the order non-enforceable. - notoneofus, on 10/11/2007, -5/+20Maybe that's because it's nothing more than paying lip service to the issue?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+18The text of the order allows Bush to confiscate your assets without proof. That's why it's important to be concerned. For example, using this EO, the Bush administration could theoretically shut down the Move-On protest organization by claiming WITHOUT proof, merely by claim, that they are having a negative impact on the the war effort's economic goals, ie., taking Iraqi oil for the benefit of US oil companies. This EO is of very serious concern and is clearly aimed in part at being able to stop protest.

By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, including the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, as amended (50 U.S.C. 1701 et seq.)(IEEPA), the National Emergencies Act (50 U.S.C. 1601 et seq.)(NEA), and section 301 of title 3, United States Code,
I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, find that, due to the unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States posed by acts of violence threatening the peace and stability of Iraq and undermining efforts to promote economic reconstruction and political reform in Iraq and to provide humanitarian assistance to the Iraqi people, it is in the interests of the United States to take additional steps with respect to the national emergency declared in Executive Order 13303 of May 22, 2003, and expanded in Executive Order 13315 of August 28, 2003, and relied upon for additional steps taken in Executive Order 13350 of July 29, 2004, and Executive Order 13364 of November 29, 2004. I hereby order:
Section 1. (a) Except to the extent provided in section 203(b)(1), (3), and (4) of IEEPA (50 U.S.C. 1702(b)(1), (3), and (4)), or in regulations, orders, directives, or licenses that may be issued pursuant to this order, and notwithstanding any contract entered into or any license or permit granted prior to the date of this order, all property and interests in property of the following persons, that are in the United States, that hereafter come within the United States, or that are or hereafter come within the possession or control of United States persons, are blocked and may not be transferred, paid, exported, withdrawn, or otherwise dealt in: any person determined by the Secretary of the Treasury, in consultation with the Secretary of State and the Secretary of Defense,
(i) to have committed, or to pose a significant risk of committing, an act or acts of violence that have the purpose or effect of:
(A) threatening the peace or stability of Iraq or the Government of Iraq; or
(B) undermining efforts to promote economic reconstruction and political reform in Iraq or to provide humanitarian assistance to the Iraqi people;
(ii) to have materially assisted, sponsored, or provided financial, material, logistical, or technical support for, or goods or services in support of, such an act or acts of violence or any person whose property and interests in property are blocked pursuant to this order; or
(iii) to be owned or controlled by, or to have acted or purported to act for or on behalf of, directly or indirectly, any person whose property and interests in property are blocked pursuant to this order.
(b) The prohibitions in subsection (a) of this section include, but are not limited to, (i) the making of any contribution or provision of funds, goods, or services by, to, or for the benefit of any person whose property and interests in property are blocked pursuant to this order, and (ii) the receipt of any contribution or provision of funds, goods, or services from any such person.
Sec. 2. (a) Any transaction by a United States person or within the United States that evades or avoids, has the purpose of evading or avoiding, or attempts to violate any of the prohibitions set forth in this order is prohibited.
(b) Any conspiracy formed to violate any of the prohibitions set forth in this order is prohibited.
Sec. 3. For purposes of this order:
(a) the term "person" means an individual or entity;
(b) the term "entity" means a partnership, association, trust, joint venture, corporation, group, subgroup, or other organization; and
(c) the term "United States person" means any United States citizen, permanent resident alien, entity organized under the laws of the United States or any jurisdiction within the United States (including foreign branches), or any person in the United States.
Sec. 4. I hereby determine that the making of donations of the type specified in section 203(b)(2) of IEEPA (50 U.S.C. 1702(b)(2)) by, to, or for the benefit of, any person whose property and interests in property are blocked pursuant to this order would seriously impair my ability to deal with the national emergency declared in Executive Order 13303 and expanded in Executive Order 13315, and I hereby prohibit such donations as provided by section 1 of this order.
Sec. 5. For those persons whose property and interests in property are blocked pursuant to this order who might have a constitutional presence in the United States, I find that, because of the ability to transfer funds or other assets instantaneously, prior notice to such persons of measures to be taken pursuant to this order would render these measures ineffectual. I therefore determine that for these measures to be effective in addressing the national emergency declared in Executive Order 13303 and expanded in Executive Order 13315, there need be no prior notice of a listing or determination made pursuant to section 1(a) of this order.
Sec. 6. The Secretary of the Treasury, in consultation with the Secretary of State and the Secretary of Defense, is hereby authorized to take such actions, including the promulgation of rules and regulations, and to employ all powers granted to the President by IEEPA as may be necessary to carry out the purposes of this order. The Secretary of the Treasury may redelegate any of these functions to other officers and agencies of the United States Government, consistent with applicable law. All agencies of the United States Government are hereby directed to take all appropriate measures within their authority to carry out the provisions of this order and, where appropriate, to advise the Secretary of the Treasury in a timely manner of the measures taken.
Sec. 7. Nothing in this order is intended to affect the continued effectiveness of any rules, regulations, orders, licenses, or other forms of administrative action issued, taken, or continued in effect heretofore or hereafter under 31 C.F.R. chapter V, except as expressly terminated, modified, or suspended by or pursuant to this order.
Sec. 8. This order is not intended to, and does not, create any right, benefit, or privilege, substantive or procedural, enforceable at law or in equity by any party against the United States, its departments, agencies, instrumentalities, or entities, its officers or employees, or any other person.

- lordshank, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Someone's either been watching Zeitgeist or the original, the 1976 film "The Network." Good for you UglieJosh!
- kageki, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10It wouldn't matter if it was Bush or your mom because this is pretty serious. How is this ignorance, care to explain? As a resident of this country I'm concerned that our President has the need to pass such a law. It seems excessive and unnecessary. What guarantee is there that such a law won't be abused? Oh thats right since you blindly follow everything that's told to you, you don't care, but they can use this law against potentially anyone even if it was a simple war protestor. I wonder would you be that complacent if this was a Democrat passing these laws?
- worldinmyeyes, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11I think we have to do our best within our circle of family and friends and co-workers. Talk to them, email them, inform them. Then they tell others and so forth. Word can spread quick. Grass roots, if you will.

You all know better.
My great uncle did stand up and protest, he wrote a letter straight to the highest office.
He though the leader must not know what was really going on.
He was the only member of the SS (that I know of) to die in the gas chamber.

My advice is to have your papers in order.
Always remember the truth, the ones in charge will try to rewrite it later, never forget.
I hope we can vote these guys out, but fear it is too late.
A terrorist attack before the next election is the only hope of the Neocons.
They will stop at nothing to destroy the slightest opposition. - RyGuyX, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9"Sec. 5. General Provisions. So... I'm honestly asking, here... does that say that the EO against torture does can not be used against the US or it's agencies... ? Wtf's the point, then? Please correct me if I'm wrong. -
