Hell, it's happening now.
Welcome to Pier 57, in New York where 800-square-foot barbed wire pens were erected to detain protesters.

No worries though, KBR (subsidiary of Halliburton) will be able to accommodate larger crowds with their custom made concentration camps, oops I meant to say detention centers.

Many highly visible right-wing talking heads and politicians have made statements that equate calling for an end to the war with treason. That's the unsubtle meaning of "cut and run". Cheney claimed that anti-war groups are doing the bidding of "al Qaeda types". Anne Coulter, the right's most popular pundit, "joked" that Howard Dean was in the top fifty Al Qaeda terrorists. Police departments across the country have infiltrated peace groups under the patriot act, and people who have participated in peace marches have been put on the terrorist watch list. Animal rights monkey-wrenchers were given long jail times under new sentencing guidelines for terrorism, even though they had been careful NOT to threaten human safety. In another story on Digg right now http://digg.com/politics/MARIJUANA_Smokers_are_terrorists the US "Drug Czar" calls marijuana growers "terrorists". The President has asked for and received broadened powers to declare martial law entirely on his own authority. Many believe he has the means and the willingness to create events which would justify that declaration. And if you're STILL not concerned… Haliburton got a half-billion dollar contract from Homeland Security to build prison camps here in the US. The camps are to be used "to support the rapid development of new programs". http://www.DeadElephant.ORG
- aliengoods, on 10/11/2007, -6/+32Why would I worry about the destruction of my civil liberties when they've already been destroyed?
- Magillicutti, on 10/11/2007, -11/+36Anybody worry about this happening in the near future?
- ryland2, on 10/11/2007, -2/+23Agree, Halliburton is a piece of *****

Must see film.
How the government is turning USA into a police state ... - duggtodeath, on 10/11/2007, -7/+25So I guess it's time to stock up on gas masks and ammunition. This is gonna be one bumpy revolution, folks!
- eightbitgirl, on 10/11/2007, -6/+23ah, I keep forgetting that being anti-war is equal to being anti-American. Ending the war is not even close to treason; people like Ann Coulter making slanderous comments towards other citizens of her own damn country is more treasonous. Even the PM of Iraq believes they'll be just fine if we leave.
- atheinostic, on 10/11/2007, -2/+17Here are a few: Habeas corpus, freedom from unreasonable search and seizure, right to free speech and to petition government (free speech cages don't count), freedom from establishment of religion ("faith-based initiatives"), right of the accused to a fair, speedy public trial by a jury of peers and to be presented with the charges made, protection from cruel and unusual punishments (e.g. torture), ...
- siszam, on 10/11/2007, -5/+18Not to mention all those placed on watch lists for opposing war or doing charity work. Food Not Bombs feeds the homeless and they are on a terrorist watch list. That shows the absurdity of it all.
Google American concentration camps and see how they are preparing for us. - dukeeeey, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12yup

Just thought i'd throw the link in there for those who haven't read it. - alacrity2005, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12Don't forget personal property rights, the right to privacy, and the Geneva Convention
- n00854180t, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Because it's not like these concentration camps have sourced material, or were in the mainstream news or anything. Pure conspiracy theory *****!
/sarcasm
It's imbeciles like you, Joe90210, who fail to wake the ***** up and smell the reality coffee, that got us into this goddamn mess in the first place. Die in a fire. - spavacer, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9I find it funny that people are shocked that people who broke legal laws went to jail. If you have a problem with a law take action. Vote for a representative who is with you on the issue. You could even write your current representative. Heck go lobby it. Also whats wrong with making sure that our NATIONAL DEFENSE is secure. If someone started selling keys to my house you can bet your bottom dollar I would put a stop to it and so would everyone else.
- physphd, on 10/11/2007, -4/+11" refuse to obey the orders of the president as they swore to do" You made some points until here. I am a combat vet. And I NEVER swore to do this. I took an oath to uphold and defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic. "Just following orders," ceased to be a valid defense a long time ago.
There are other options. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conscientious_objector - mattmoto, on 10/11/2007, -4/+11Hey! Who said you could bring logic into this argument! Since when has discipline been necessary to uphold a military?
Take your fancy opinion out of my internets, and learn to conform to the correct point-of-view! - Lister169, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I remember when I protested against World War I - of course we called it the Great War because, at the time, we were unaware that it was the first in a series...
- atheinostic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7You say that we haven't really lost liberty, because liberty has been taken from someone else. When rights like the right to petition for Habeas doesn't apply to others who are under suspicion, then they really don't apply to any of us either because they're only purpose is to protect those under suspicion from false imprisonment, mistreatment, etc.
If the government violates anyone's liberty, everyone's liberty is violated.
Or, as JKF put it,
"Freedom is indivisible, and when one man is enslaved, all are not free." - NeoRicen, on 10/11/2007, -9/+15I wonder how many people are digging this without realising it happened in 1917. The headline makes it appear it's happening now and because of Iraq (delusional violent idiots don't count, they're being arrested for being delusional and violent regardless of why).
- meldroc, on 10/11/2007, -4/+10Considering that I personally attend anti-war protests, and I've been flipped off, screamed at, called "commie" and "traitor", told to "Go back to China" and even given death threats, yeah I'm worried. The authoritarian right has way too much power in this country and they would bring back the Espionage and Sedition Acts if they thought they could get away with it.
- DRINKxREDxBULL, on 10/11/2007, -6/+12You idiots. This is from 1917.
FDR put more people in camps than Bush ever could. - cwcain, on 10/11/2007, -5/+11buried for misleading digg title
- Onetrack, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8concentration camps? You mean ' Happy camps ! '
- goffy59, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Joe, why do you gotta be an *****? Die.
- texaspeaks, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5You all are scary crazy if you really believe that the police are about to come crashing in your door and take you to jail because you want to impeach Bush or don't support the war. I'm fine with you thinking as you do, but calling our government a tyranny is an insult to the millions in the last century who were persecuted and truly tyrannized for their beliefs by Nazism, Communism, and Islam.
- kyrandian, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Didnt any of you go to college?
LMAO@ anyone who thought this was current. - AbortionsTickle, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4And, he mentioned that they were inter-related ...where exactly? Anyone that uses half an ounce of their brain can see that he is speaking in generalities, and that the two have the same general idea behind them.
Also, it's spelled Hippie. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6I believe i can protest and tell this criminal government to go ***** itself any goddamned time I feel like it. It can kill me but it can't kill an idea. The idea of freedom never dies. Governments have always and will always attempt to quash that idea. They have never and will never be able to do so.
I've got a permit, quite a few actually. Each "allowed" me to purchase the tools that will be used against this behemoth. You may like living under the thumb of oppression. Some of us don't and will eventually rise up. Your best bet is to stay the ***** out of our way. Do a little research regarding what happened to the loyalists after the first revolution. They were banished from the newly formed Republic.
It may not go so well for them after the second one. - pictureDIGGER, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6***** I forgot. These things don't have any merit whatsoever.
/joke - jojoko, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3this little plagiarist stole his idea from penn & teller's bullsh!!t

"First they came for the Jews
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the Communists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left
to speak out for me."
-Pastor Martin Niemoller
Sorry, really did not want to make a WWII/Nazi reference (so don't bother mentioning Godwin's Law), but that shows whats wrong with your logic perfectly. If they are willing to strip one group of civil liberties, what makes you think they aren't willing to strip you, personally, of civil liberties. - DRINKxREDxBULL, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I wish they would, becuase then we don't have hear their ***** anymore.
- Dustmuffins, on 10/11/2007, -4/+7this happened between 1917 and 1920... I'm pretty sure this doesn't have anything to do with the hippy movement...
- allan17, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3How about you go ***** yourself gotahell?
- BurrItsCold, on 10/11/2007, -10/+13Innocent Americans?? Just more liberal anti-war propaganda. How do you guys buy into this so easily?
"Disclosure of government and industrial information regarding national defense" - meaning they worked for defense contractors and ended up selling classified information and technology to foreign agents. They weren't imprisoned for attending a peace rally you idiots.
You're a fool if you think we ought to do away with the Espionage Act. - Magillicutti, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I know right.. ***** makes me think of this Defiance, Ohio song: "let's stop this talk of privilege because the songs that we sing are as much a product of our privilege as the clothes on my back and the phone call i made to my mom last night."
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3lmao!
- Osjpr, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4You will have to do more than thatDon't forget to arrange materials to quickly blockade all roads.
- BurrItsCold, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6I agree. You should face jail time for not deploying.
- tony4moroney, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2dont worry theres no need to be alarmed.
just shave all your facial hair, bleach your skin white and dont forget those sideburns! - dissident0, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4BurrItsCold: "They weren't imprisoned for attending a peace rally you idiots."
"On June 16, 1918, Debs made a speech in Canton, Ohio in opposition to World War I and was arrested under the Espionage Act of 1917. He was convicted, sentenced to serve ten years in prison and disenfranchised for life."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eugene_V._Debs#Opposition_to_World_War_I
Who's the fool now? - DRINKxREDxBULL, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Because you are an idiot?
Sorry, but you asked. - faskill, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2It's a two way street. After attending a couple antiwar rallies, I've seen antiwar activists flipping off, screaming at, and even wishing death and worse to pro-war people. With any argument on any issue reaches large scale, civility disappears. If only the arguing lead to action with positive results...
- orangester, on 10/11/2007, -6/+8We all saw it coming miles away. Sadly there's not much we can do about it. Why do you think the hippie movement died off? They realized no matter how much protesting you do, the government won't budge. It's a corrupt system that does not serve the people at all. ***** the pledge of alligence. Liberty and justice for all my ass.
- faskill, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Sorry you're getting dugg down tdrizzle. People seem to love the pay, the benefits and the positives of enlisting but don't realize that it's not all fun and games. Even if we go to war for the worst of reasons, if you are enlisted and are informed to deploy, you must obey. Granted it sucks for you, but I don't feel as bad because *you* signed up for it.
- NeoRicen, on 10/11/2007, -5/+7Hello! 1917! This isn't about the Iraq war you dumb idiot.
- atheinostic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2* JFK, not JKF heh
- Stevejsam, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Goffy59- dugg down, reported and blocked/.
- faskill, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2What entertains me is what's being taught in today's History classes. Compare the events of today to what has happened in the past; if anyone is surprised this has happened before and is happening again, you should question what's being taught. Well, you don't have to, but I will.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Destruction of civil liberties? Your ***** ass should wear a burka and be beaten at halftime at a soccer game. You peace lovers ought to go to Iraq, Iran, or Darfur and get involved instead of saying here in this so-called military state. You know how to appreciate freedom of speech, you just don’t have the balls to defend.
