- TheTaoOfBill, on 01/22/2008, -22/+554 out of 5 soldiers returning from Iraq support Ron Paul
- MrChocolate, on 01/22/2008, -3/+34I know! I think the exact same thing each morning as I beat my wife!
- euping, on 01/22/2008, -1/+26All of this makes no sense until you ask “What if a few of the most powerful families in America are simply exploiting it to steal as much money as possible without regard for whether or not the nation survives?” Then everything that’s happening in our government makes sense.
- AndrewDB, on 01/22/2008, -3/+28Go serve *****. If you're in Iraq, you'll see combat duty.
- Spyral42, on 01/22/2008, -2/+20closer to shaken baby syndrome. Check out the Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traumatic_brain_injur ...
- notque, on 01/22/2008, -7/+25War crimes must be punished.
- AriaStar, on 01/22/2008, -8/+24Yet these people are not included among the casualties. Truth be told, those killed are far better off than most of those still alive. Between a) returning home with brain damage or loss eye sight, hearing, and a couple limbs, or b) being dead, which would you choose? Yet we only count those who are dead. And only the Americans who are dead. Not the Iraqi civilians who are less than worthless to our *****-up government.
- BillS, on 01/22/2008, -2/+16Ok, so now we're getting about 25,000 "Mild, traumatic brain injuries" a year back for our war in Iraq to defend against an attack by 17 wacko al qaeda member terrorists who were not from Iraq and the editor of "Time" says "When we got into the Iraq war we didn’t know how much it would cost".
I wonder if he still hangs with the same idiots? - bugsy187, on 01/22/2008, -0/+13The source is a Pentagon report as cited by Richard Stengel, not the Crooks and Liars website.
- MaTT2011, on 01/22/2008, -1/+11OOOOhhh, i see; You already have a brain injury.
Or is that just mental retardation? Yah, thats probably it. Dumbass. - billyjack1958, on 01/22/2008, -1/+10I have 4 family members serving and I am so deeply offended by your ignorant comment that I don't even know what to say......the really scary thought is that you are probably allowed to vote and drive cars.
- gofalcons, on 01/22/2008, -2/+11Have you ever heard of an IED? How bout a mortar attack? These are the things that the Combat Action Badge was made for. Not just Infantry units see combat anymore. Also, combat doesn't mean a straight up firefight anymore. But anyway, these are the things that are hitting us now. (by us I mean soldiers, not some ***** on digg who supports our troops, but just not enough to join them) I can't name a single guy in my unit *who has been on a tour* that hasn't been at least involved in an IED attack, ambush or vehicle accident, and i'm in a ***** signal unit. It's so funny how some people think, yep Iraq is just one big ass frat party, with beer and coctails for everyone! If this wasn't true, then how come all units have to have classes on MTBI and PTSD now *****. Get to know some ***** facts before you start talking. GOD DAMMIT PEOPLE LIKE YOU PISS ME OFF! ***** MAN UP AND JOIN OR SHUT THE ***** UP!!!! Stop acting like you're actually doing something just talking!
- relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -2/+10How dare you belittle the courage and sacrifice of our young men and women in arms! Now get back out there corporal, and go shoot yourself some towelheads so we can load up on oil and defend freedom here at home!
Never mind that brain trauma, nothing a little walking off in the sun won't fix up. - drgmdp, on 01/22/2008, -1/+9i'd say that unless i came back with no legs, no arms, no eyes and chronic ass itches, i'd prefer to come back alive
- Archer007, on 01/22/2008, -1/+9Idiot. Once you sign up with ANY of the armed services, you have little choice to do what you are told or face severe consequences. The troops are following orders. A military that does not obey orders is no more than a mob with guns. Therefore, direct your criticisms to the commander of our armed forces.
- Falldog, on 01/22/2008, -5/+13On the bright side, it's a triumph of medicine. 20 years ago those men and women would probably becoming home in bags.
Brain injury or not, that we have so many troops over there continually getting injured for unclear reasons is disturbing in itself. - rnwen2750, on 01/22/2008, -2/+9As long as the strap's smaller than your thumb, you should be "a-ok".
- AriaStar, on 01/22/2008, -2/+9The harsh truth is that many of these people would be better off coming home in bags rather than to have to suffer. Medical advances allow us to keep old people alive a lot longer who would rather be dead because of their suffering. Just because we CAN keep people alive doesn't always mean we should. If suffering outweighs the benefits of being alive, is it right? Those who come home as vegetables - are they and their families really better off? It's harsh, and it's sad, and this ***** government needs to look long and hard and what it's doing, but they don't care. Their sons and daughters are safe at Ivy League colleges living safe, secure lives away from combat or "serving" this country by promoting their parents' next campaigns.
- buckrogers1965, on 01/22/2008, -1/+8This is an official published report by the pentagon. If you want to refute the numbers in this report, please cite your sources.
Personal anecdotes, while entertaining, are not sources of information and do not in any way refute the pentagon report. - ronpaul20008, on 01/22/2008, -3/+10quit whining, i mean it's worth it, - we've got freedom & cheap oil, we're spreading democracy throughout the world, & we're winning the war on terrorism, right?
- tommy7154, on 01/22/2008, -0/+7interpreters.
- buckrogers1965, on 01/22/2008, -1/+8So you are saying that these soldiers are faking? Wow, way to support the troops, you must be neocon.
- dizilbdog, on 01/22/2008, -0/+6I have uhm TBI from a Mountain Bike Accident and I feel for the Soldiers, and It sucks that it's something that is noticed right away some times it comes up after a couple of years. This is why I hate Football All it is one bit TBI game and guys just waiting for a Brain Injury.. Your head no pun intedened is not meant to be hitting people or be shot at. It's fragile like life. Treat it like that Wear a Helmet whatever you do,
- Ratteler, on 01/22/2008, -6/+121 in 5 Soldiers are returning from Iraq as Christian Republicans? That's terrible.
:-p - inactive, on 01/22/2008, -0/+6America's enemy is the idiot who IGNORES that Bush lied to us about Iraq, IGNORES that Bush defends treason, IGNORES that Bush was asleep at the wheel on 9/11, IGNORES that Bush had already blundered our war effort in Iraq, IGNORES that Bush still tries to link Iraq and 911, IGNORES that Bush was going to run amok with our Constitution, IGNORES his continued policy that fuels extremist groups and floods intelligence agencies with "false positives" from illegal wiretapping operations—among other things and still voted to re-elect this miserable failure.
The enemy from within has perpetuated this death and devastation. Don't forget it.
It is because of a bush voter that the country is in the atrocious position it is in today. - KizardLing, on 01/22/2008, -3/+8If the blimp could be used in lieu of any more Ron Paul comments on Digg, I'll happily throw money at it.
- gofalcons, on 01/22/2008, -2/+75 out of 5 were lied into believing we were serving our country. 1 out of 5 of us wake up before going to Iraq. 4 out of 5 of us wake up after coming back. The rest will never see the truth that they have been lied to. It wouldn't matter if the president admitted it, they'd just blame it on the other party.
- LucasKane, on 01/22/2008, -2/+7*****
- Ryan32, on 01/22/2008, -2/+7I deployed 3 times as a Marine grunt, maybe 1 in 10 or 1 in 15 had any sort of head injury/trauma... All 3 of my deployments were with grunt battalions.... That makes us the most likely to have the worst rate... Probably 75% of all the personnel in country will never leave a base, and never see any sort of combat whatsoever.... Hell most of them will never see an Iraqi outside of terps they see at the chow-hall.....
That being said, i'm calling BS. - Shaner25, on 01/22/2008, -0/+5Looks like Bush's "injury" is more contagious than we thought.
- blitzer, on 01/22/2008, -1/+6The question you should be asking now is how many left with brain injuries?
- Flashman, on 01/22/2008, -0/+4The same thing happened in World War I: Once soldiers were given helmets as standard trench gear, head injuries skyrocketed - but they would have been dead otherwise.
- buckrogers1965, on 01/22/2008, -0/+4Yeah, so glad that great man Oliver North disproved all those bogus stories. /sarcasm
- URnotheonly1, on 01/22/2008, -3/+7bang their heads in boredom
- brad3378, on 01/22/2008, -4/+8"Mild, traumatic brain injuries"
Is this the same thing as Post Traumatic Stress syndrome? - BohicaTwentyTwo, on 01/22/2008, -1/+5What exactly is a Mild Traumatic Brain Injury anyway?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traumatic_brain_injur ...
With mild TBI, the patient may remain conscious or may lose consciousness for a few seconds or minutes. The person may also feel dazed or not like him- or herself for several days or weeks after the initial injury. Other symptoms include:
headache
mental confusion
lightheadedness
dizziness
double vision, blurred vision, or tired eyes
ringing in the ears
bad taste in the mouth
fatigue or lethargy
a change in sleep patterns
behavioral or mood changes
trouble with memory, concentration, or calculation
symptoms may remain the same or get better; worsening symptoms indicate a more severe injury - tommy7154, on 01/22/2008, -2/+6 I sustained a head injury while in Iraq that required 3 staples but it was in no way combat related. I know of 2 others in my company that also did but none were combat related and none serious enough that they be included in this 1 in 5 number pulled out of someones ass. We do wear kevlars ya know...
On a related note, what the ***** are we doing there? Bring em home... - Godel, on 01/22/2008, -0/+4I don't know if that really is a "bright side." Having our soldiers killed would be much less draining on the veteran's resource system. As it stands now, our system can't cope with this number of traumatized veterans. Our generation is going to get pretty used to seeing homeless with "I'm a Veteran, change please" signs.
- roseman5285, on 01/22/2008, -1/+5being one who has worked extensively on TBI with personnel from Walter Reed Medical Center, where they recently added a wing specifically for TBI rehab, I find that these numbers are accurate. Especially knowing that TBI as a whole happens to be affecting more people than cancer, aids, multiple sclerosis, and spinal chord injuries combined.
source...straight from the horses mouth - http://www.biausa.org/aboutbi.htm - makkaveli19, on 01/22/2008, -1/+5hmm you know i've never known what a real man is, do you guys grunt instead of words?
- inactive, on 01/22/2008, -0/+4Sorry man, I just called and your boss chewed me out, seems McDonalds employees can't take calls during breakfast rush.
Hope I didn't get you in trouble. - inactive, on 01/23/2008, -1/+4how much longer is the ronpaul cult going to plague the internetz...lemme search... republican national convention and monster truck rally is going to be on september 1st-4th. i dont know if thats when they select the party candidate but i imagine ronpaul will have dropped out by then to pursue his other hobbies like creationism. so at most, L Ron Paul's disciples will be with up for 7 more months =[
- HomerS1, on 01/22/2008, -1/+4As others have said, the high incidence of head injuries is a testament to the effectiveness of body armor, medical treatment in the field, etc. In the not too distant past, many of these men would be coming home in bags from fatal chest injuries or head injuries for which treatment was not available.
buried as inaccurate. - LeeSoong, on 01/24/2008, -0/+3Believe it or not, agree with it , or not, a lot of people do join the military because they LOVE their country, 100% - for the flag, for family, for God & Country.
http://www.marines.com - inactive, on 01/22/2008, -0/+3Why don't you enlist and go verify that for us?
Oh, right, I forgot.
Right wing asshats only cheerlead for war, they don't actually man up and serve. - inactive, on 01/22/2008, -1/+4I'd challenge you to ask any soldier or Marine that has deployed to tell you what their unit suffered casualty wise. Though I can only offer you a data point of one, my BN has deployed 4 times to Iraq (I went on 3 deployments, I'm retired now), and has suffered 2KIA and around 20WIA out of a unit strength of @400 soldiers. That's for all four deployments combined.
No soldier or Marine is saying that TBI doesn't happen, but 1:5 fails the sniff test. - roseman5285, on 01/22/2008, -0/+3kevlar is actualy the reason people are suffering from TBI, the armor is so good at what it is able to protect, the body, but it cant protect the brain from jarring itself inside the skull
- FatLoser, on 01/22/2008, -0/+3Hurry up and wait.
