- Indyanna, on 03/19/2009, -2/+45fta: Rep. John Lewis, chairman of a House subcommittee overseeing the federal bailout, said two firms owe more than $100 million apiece. “This is shameful. It is a disgrace,” said Lewis, D-Ga. “We are going to get to the bottom of what is going on here.”
OK, I'm no lawyer, and I'm sure not Mensa material. However, as chairman of the subcommittee overseeing the federal bailout, shouldn't Rep. Lewis have got to the bottom of what was going on BEFORE the bailouts were given? Evidently I'm not smart enough to be in Congress, 'cuz is sure don't make no sense to me. - ichbinladen, on 03/19/2009, -0/+19The government should just start printing money and shooting it out of cannons.
- Jericho6, on 03/19/2009, -6/+23The more I learn about these companies, the less I want to know. I was blissful in my ignorance of the system
- FujoGusto, on 03/19/2009, -0/+14So if start a company I can refuse to pay taxes and get money from the government? I'm suddenly feeling the entrepreneurial spirit!
- emmettgolf, on 03/19/2009, -2/+13These firms intend to file bankruptcy and have the tax debt paid by the taxpayers.
- inactive, on 03/19/2009, -2/+12I guess Congress was too busy passing a bill that they didn't read to bother checking out the firms first. *facepalm*
- monkeyrun, on 03/19/2009, -0/+8That's the new and improved American Dream
- hooah212002, on 03/19/2009, -0/+8See, here in the real world, where "normal" people live, if you are in need of financial assistance.......you WORK for it. If your company is not making money? (I mean a small business here folks) It fails! What don't people understand about that concept?
- imnojezus, on 03/19/2009, -1/+7Blissful ignorance is how we ended up here.
- inactive, on 03/19/2009, -0/+6I wish I could get away with owing just a few hundred dollars. They'd be after my ass like stink on *****. How is it possible to owe hundreds of millions?
- tacobueno, on 03/19/2009, -0/+6NO there was no way to look over those records because if we did it would have taken more than a couple days. If we did not give them the money right then, the whole industry would have failed. So no time to think about things, look over records, make sure the recipient is worthy, and know we were making the right decision.
- abizzy, on 03/19/2009, -0/+6Exactly Imnojezus. Just because ignorance is bliss doesn't mean we should stand blissfully unaware of the fact we (taxpayers) are being robbed. It seems that only regular citizens (whoever those might be) have to worry about American laws, as long as you are part of a Corp.oration, you can stay blissful and pass the blame.
- cnot3, on 03/19/2009, -0/+5Our so called "representatives" are giving your money away. Remember, it's not stealing when the government does it.
- Barackalypse, on 03/20/2009, -0/+5This just keeps getting better and better. Its going to be funny to see what Obama says about this, given the fact that his own Treasury Secretary owed back taxes at one point.
- CySailor, on 03/19/2009, -1/+6If they didn't pay taxes are they eligible as an entity to become Tresurey Secretary then?
- LordBalderdash, on 03/19/2009, -0/+4"This makes sense to me. They can't pay taxes since they don't have the money. Doesn't mean I like it."
FTA: "one recipient had almost $113 million in unpaid federal income taxes from 2005 and 2006. A second recipient owed almost $102 million dating to before 2004."
they had the money *then* - they just didn't pay it. - TheStrangeBrew, on 03/19/2009, -0/+4“In and of itself, this does not signal any intent not to pay,” Keith said. Oh really? I'd buy that for a dollar...
- inactive, on 03/19/2009, -1/+5Is anybody surprised by this? When crooks cheat, they cheat all the way. I don't know many companies who are really strict about being on the up-and-up towards one aspect of their business while cheating the ***** out of people on the other hand. Liars are liars. It's no more complicated than that.
- yboy720, on 03/19/2009, -0/+4"Banks and other companies receiving federal money were required to sign contracts stating they had no unpaid taxes, Lewis said."
jail time anyone? - Gandalff, on 03/20/2009, -0/+4Sounds like they should be on Obama's Cabinet or at least advising him on the economy. Oh wait maybe they are.
- youareretarded, on 03/19/2009, -0/+4If there was ever an argument for letting them all crash and burn I think this would be it.
What's next because I'm sure we are only scratching the tip of the ice berg here! - carlosos, on 03/19/2009, -0/+4That isn't too bad. The German Government found out that Opel (a GM company) was paying taxes the last 25 in the USA while receiving all benefits from the German government and now that company wants bailout money again from the Government where they never paid taxes.
I'm just saying it to say that all over the world big companies were sucking the governments dry and always expect free money. - julesbond007, on 03/20/2009, -0/+3WTF?! This is ridiculous, for us hard working people we get paid AFTER the government takes our taxes...even then they take more and return the rest as REFUND...I'm about to get my pitckfork and go after everyone of these *****!
Ever notice CONGRESS gets surprised when things like that happen? Yeah yeah yeah! Get rid of the *****! - Treshnell, on 03/19/2009, -0/+3I hope you just forgot your [s] tags at home...
- MrCashyCash, on 03/20/2009, -0/+3Let me guess.... Obama is outraged.
- unknownpoltroon, on 03/19/2009, -3/+6Privatize profit, socialize risk, and don't pay taxes. Its like a crooked neocon dream come true.
- LordBalderdash, on 03/19/2009, -1/+4i think there's plenty of blame to go around.
- linagee, on 03/19/2009, -0/+2Either that or ask for a bailout to pay their tax bill.
- inactive, on 03/19/2009, -0/+2There were a few people who said that we should just let these companies declare bankruptcy and restructure. In the end, we'd all be better off if they had gone that route instead of this nonsense going on right now... to top it all off, they will probably have to declare bankruptcy anway and we'll be on the hook for all the money we flushed down the toilet.
- PeppermintPig, on 03/19/2009, -1/+3Does Geithner have a boomerang thunderbolt that shoots out then strikes his own ass?
If you want to pay taxes, try to broker a deal with China rather than throwing it down the IRS hole. I'm sure they'd appreciate getting the money owed for THEIR LOANS TO THE US at a better rate than the government is currently giving them. - grey580, on 03/19/2009, -1/+3Greedy bastards. We need to make examples out of these executives running these corporations.
I say public lashings. 10 a piece.
Make a memorial that says, "On this day America was fed up with greed."
Make a sculpture with a place to tie people up to and be whipped.
And let the sculpture be forever stained red with the blood of the greedy and corrupt. - DanThePainter, on 03/20/2009, -0/+2You think that all of the decision makers at those thirteen firms are neocons? Not a liberal, or a progressive, or a moderate among them; not a one?
- inactive, on 03/21/2009, -0/+2I owe back taxes. Does that mean I get a bailout, too?
- inactive, on 03/21/2009, -0/+1Kind of like Geithner.
- Pyros7, on 03/19/2009, -1/+2Amazing how so much anger is directed at the companies & CEOs receiving our tax money and not the crooks who took it from us in the first place to give to 'em.
It's time we started holding our elected representatives responsible for investing hundreds of billions of our money in the private sector without bothering to examine their finances. Maybe if someone had looked at the books they'd have found out who the companies owed money to (ie the IRS and future multi-million dollar executive bonus contracts.)
But the jokes on us. The American people wanted a fast bailout, and this is what we got. - inactive, on 03/21/2009, -0/+1All three of you were obviously more on top of what was going on here than Congress itself.
- PeppermintPig, on 03/19/2009, -0/+1Unless you're the US government. In that case, you just ask China for the money, then ignore the fact that you can't pay it back.
- Barackalypse, on 03/20/2009, -0/+1Sure, as long as they people who authorized the money be spent serve it with them.
- PharAway1, on 03/19/2009, -0/+1I agree but the problem we have in the US is providing help to those that don't have the 'gumption' or drive to pull themselves out of the gutter. Most US citizens have the notion that they world owes them a favor even though they didn't do anything.
Sadly I have friends/family that are this way. Its most frustrating when you sit with someone and they tell you "I can't find a job so I'm going on welfare, etc" and they're sitting in a McDonalds that has a huge "NOW HIRING MANAGERS: NO EXP NECESSARY WILL TRAIN". If I were at a point where I needed to go on a social program I'd work 80 hrs a week at minimum wage if I had to in order to support my family..
But that is my 2 cents... - inactive, on 03/20/2009, -0/+1 It was not just the Demobrats, the ***** retardicans had a hand in it as well.
- inactive, on 03/20/2009, -0/+1 No we didn't...MILLIONS opposed all the bailouts and we were ignored.
- SoCalDissident, on 11/03/2009, -0/+1They are, but those cannons aren't pointed at us.. We get those other ones...
- Barackalypse, on 03/20/2009, -0/+1They need to make examples out of the people in Congress who throw our money away without even the most basic safeguards.
- Claverhouse, on 03/19/2009, -3/+4Mr. Geithner will hit wealthy miscreants who cheat on their taxes with all the thunderbolts of hell.
- inactive, on 03/20/2009, -0/+1 I agree and I blame both of um.
- inactive, on 03/20/2009, -0/+1 Jail time for them? In your dreams...It won't happen.
- rollin03, on 03/21/2009, -1/+1Don't blame the open mouth blame the hand that feeds it.
- yarcod, on 03/19/2009, -5/+5Don't blame the firms... blame congress for giving them the money.
- DanThePainter, on 03/20/2009, -1/+1You're not helping your cause with out of the blue, off topic commentary.
- Birukun, on 03/19/2009, -1/+1Ask the Secretary of the Treasury......
Then again, he does not know how much he owes.....
