- yanksn6, on 03/19/2009, -4/+10That's why they are called Con-gressmen and not Progress-men
- inactive, on 03/19/2009, -4/+10No telemarketer ever kicked billions my way just for giving a little donation. Comparing Washington to telemarketers is defaming an entire industry.
- marksism, on 03/19/2009, -1/+7It's not necessarily that politicians are such awful people, but that such awful people operate around politics to make a lot of money. Consultants, lawyers, media firms, publicists- the people who studied the absolute science of an election and treat it like a game to be won, a chess board to conquer. It's not even about the validity of ideas and effectiveness of policies and laws, it's about what sells and gets people riled up. Politicians buy into this and use it for their own greedy ends. I put far more blame on the marketers who made it just another arena to sell into.
It's all your and my fault they have to do this. We require them to have flashy ads and big campaigns to hold our attention and punish them with losing if they don't. People who don't advertise and fundraise simply don't win. So don't go off hating some politician who has to spend all the time raising money to convince you to vote for him, because you wouldn't know who he was unless he did that. So, ***** you all. - vsaint, on 03/19/2009, -3/+8I become more disillusioned with our system of government every day. It seems nearly impossible for someone to make it into office that hasn't received money or gifts from lobbies or corporations. I feel more and more that there will never be any sort of real progress made. Neither major party in america is focused on the interests of americans, they are only concerned about making sure their own are re-elected. It makes me sick the more I think about the absolute smoke and mirror show that is our federal government. It seems like the only way to make it somewhat balanced is to have 2 term limits for all legislators. This would bring it back to what the forefathers intended, not having career politicians, but having working people from their respective districts coming in to improve their country, not bleed it dry.
- BrettFromTibet, on 03/19/2009, -4/+8What? Washington greedy?
- Btown418, on 03/19/2009, -3/+7An honest reassessment of our current government operations is needed... just like any big organization, lots of wasted time, useless processes and other waste creep in over time. As we currently have no process for shrinking government at all and removing waste, we currently have the most bloated and inefficient government possible.
Time to change things in any way possible - EricSchC1, on 03/19/2009, -0/+3Yeah, cause State level government is pure as the driven snow, right?
- Rothbardosaurus, on 03/19/2009, -3/+6Elections are just advance auctions for stolen goods.

You are starting to see the truth. The more that see the truth of what government really is, the better. One day you may come to realize that there is no such thing as limited government. Government always grows and will always grow and be corrupt. The cure will come when people like you realize this and become the majority and then we can live in freedom. Do some more research on Libertarianism and Anarchy. You might just come to realize that systems of government always fail and that the cure is to abolish government.
- Treason, on 03/19/2009, -4/+6These comments suck.
- bobbi21, on 03/19/2009, -1/+3cus then only billionaires would have political office?
- bobbi21, on 03/19/2009, -0/+2Actually this is just america. Other countries make it so you can't campaign with that much money. Canada has it that your party gets campaign money based on how many votes you get and that makes up a lot of the funding (of course our stupid current prime minister wants to get rid of that since he's from the rich party that can pay for their own campaigns without any funding)
- ackack, on 03/19/2009, -0/+2I have the heart of a telemarketer.
It's in a box in my bottom desk drawer. - OnlyShawn, on 03/19/2009, -1/+3sorry mate. when you put the slop in the trough, the pigs WILL fight to get at it. Lobbyists et al exist because the political process hands out goodies, and rent-seeking ensues.
- bobbi21, on 03/19/2009, -1/+2In general I believe digg is more well informed than the average american. It's the average american who is influenced by the flashy ads and all that. You'd at least get less of that on digg
- Gndoab, on 03/20/2009, -0/+1or perhaps you are just eccentric enough in your political beliefs that there is a reason why what you want to change isn't happening...?
- Jlaugh, on 03/20/2009, -0/+1You got the right idea. And those annoying political people on the street.
- LordSkywalker, on 03/19/2009, -6/+7The government's just too damn big. Inefficient and bloated, just like the companies they're trying to bail out.
- Moonrider, on 03/20/2009, -0/+1A faster solution is to start a recall petition on your elected "representatives" who are "doin' you wrong".
- inactive, on 03/19/2009, -0/+1Gimme a billion dollars I need a loaf of bread.
- Moonrider, on 03/20/2009, -0/+1Voting changes nothing. Either stupid voters continue to vote for the same old *****, or else it has to be that the elections are rigged, somehow, otherwise we wouldn't have so many incompetent, corrupt, incumbent politicans re-elected. Voting doesn't work to change anything. After all, all those who voted for Barak's "change" got nothing of the kind (I voted outside the Demopublican box), he's just continuing the same policies both Clinton and Bush followed.
- Moonrider, on 03/20/2009, -0/+1You are right about state government, and most local governments are just as bad. We NEED to get government at ALL levels back in line.
- inactive, on 03/19/2009, -3/+4".....many of our elected officials spend more time worrying about filling their campaign coffers than they do about governing...."
That's because there are so many career politicians in Washington DC.
I wish we could start a nationwide campaign to vote out ALL of the career politicians....
......BOTH Democrat and Republican. They are ruining America.
The Founding Fathers NEVER intended for politicians to come to Washington and never leave.
VOTE THEM OUT OF OFFICE!!! - sugarazor, on 03/20/2009, -0/+1Should door-to-door sales and all forms of cold-calling be outlawed as well?
- davidlt, on 11/03/2009, -0/+1Wait a minute, I own a telemarketing company!
http://drsacquisitions.com - IKORKYI, on 03/20/2009, -0/+1no you have to be empty, soulless, and wrong
- EricSchC1, on 03/19/2009, -0/+1Am I all alone in thinking that not only are term-lengths too long, but no politician should be allowed more than 2 terms or 8 years, whichever happens first in a given office?
- Jlaugh, on 03/20/2009, -0/+1The proper place to put it is in a duck inside a locked chest on an island in the middle of a lake.
- sugarazor, on 03/19/2009, -0/+1Why do you hate hardworking Americans just trying to make a living?
- smemily, on 03/20/2009, -0/+1Utah is a telemarketing hub. Convergys, a telemarketer, is the state's 6th largest employer after the State, 2 universities, the hospitals, and the air force base. Convergys is the people you talk to when you order ***** off infomercials. They don't do outbound as far a I know, just inbound. There are many smaller telemarketing companies as well, mostly outbound. Many more have been closed. I worked for Assail, Inc, but quit before the FBI moved in and shut it down, auctioning the owner's estate. Google it if you're curious, The FTC got a $106 million judgment against the company and its president.
I do know a little about this. I met my husband there telemarketing and he worked for some 8+ telemarketing companies, all outbound, while we lived there. My sister worked for Convergys. Most of the smaller companies, by the way, will ***** over employees just as bad as they will customers. They short on commission, bounce paychecks, etc. It's not a pleasant industry but when you're fresh out of high school it is that, or fast food. - Gndoab, on 03/19/2009, -0/+1You claim that career-politicians are ruining this country, but give absolutely no facts to back up the statement.
Not only that, but you are basically saying that politicians actually do their job and do it well should be penalized and not allowed to continue their job because someone from some other district didn't have the conscious to vote their crappy politician out for someone who could be better.
(i.e. your claim of career-politicians ruining the country, but not all career-politicians are ruining this country. So if there is a career-politician representing the people from where you live and is doing a terrible job at it, for some reason the career-politician from where I live should be penalized? It's not my fault that you have failed to vote the guy out of office)
"I wish we could start a nationwide campaign to vote out ALL of the career politicians...."
You can. This isn't Soviet Russia. go ahead. you may find that your views aren't shared by most people. - akhomestead, on 03/19/2009, -3/+3That's why they want to stick their nose into everything so they get new chances of being paid off. But that's democracy in action... when intelligence and personal responsibility become the minority you get ruled by idiots and thieves.
- trixdropd, on 03/19/2009, -2/+2I can agree that our politicians need to spend there time doing there job they were elected to do, rather than fund raising as mentioned in the article. missing a vote for a fund raiser is just wrong.
- voodoosteve84, on 03/19/2009, -1/+1What about the people running against these incumbents?
- Gndoab, on 03/19/2009, -1/+1no process?
I must have imagined going to the voting booth... - sgerwel1985, on 03/20/2009, -0/+0Heart, really? I could think of other words, but heart would not be one of them.
- gkiltz, on 03/20/2009, -0/+0Reader's Digest!
What more is there to say? - smemily, on 03/20/2009, -0/+0and here you go, the gov's Bureau of Labor Statistics: http://www.bls.gov/opub/ted/2007/jan/wk1/art01.htm
Salt Lake County UT is #4 by number of people employed in the industry. - Jlaugh, on 03/20/2009, -1/+1Outbound telemarketing should be outlawed.
- lex0nyc, on 03/19/2009, -4/+2Readers Digest has a web site?!
- gramathy, on 03/19/2009, -3/+1AKA none at all?
- magus824, on 03/19/2009, -3/+1No way, you just need the heart of the Terminator!
- Vaiper, on 03/19/2009, -5/+3Ya, I get it. Money makes the world go around. Quite frankly, I'm sick of it. Someone or something needs to put the human race out for the count. We have no redeeming traits. We manage to figure out every possible way, no matter how small, to destroy everything. Go us.
- christoast, on 03/19/2009, -6/+3Read the rest of it, Its pointing out the lack of heart in order to survive. It does not say that telemarketers have a heart.
- smemily, on 03/19/2009, -4/+1Most telemarketers are actually college students in Utah who are trying to put themselves through school. On the afternoon shift, anyway. The morning shift is full of a few college students and a lot of 40-something junkies.
- fadinglaughter, on 03/19/2009, -3/+0Why can't they just use their own goddamn money?

What is Digg?
