- AntBing, on 10/11/2007, -5/+76I canceled mine already. Opie and Anthony were on a channel labeled explicit and I PAY(paid) for the damn service. I would change the channel if I were offended. ***** XM.
- fober, on 10/11/2007, -1/+51"According to various message boards"
Really New York Press?
Really? - fapfap, on 10/11/2007, -4/+48God damnit!
I was just about to dig this:
http://www.*****.com/ - davidsmero, on 10/11/2007, -6/+49Makes me want to get XM then cancel it.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+41I thought the point of satelite radio was to get uncensored, ad-free shows. What's going on?
- totorototoro, on 10/11/2007, -6/+33Wow, based on Digg's response, you'd think XM was a raging success with hundreds of million subscribers before this. Kinda like Ron Paul.
- jaredac, on 10/11/2007, -4/+31
http://www.cancelxm.com/ - sjl127, on 10/11/2007, -6/+26XM is history - I'm glad I canned them as soon as I heard a commercial on one of their music channels.
- M-ACE, on 10/11/2007, -3/+23Old XM = Opie and Anthony + iPOD
New XM = iPOD... What's the point. - zomgflamer, on 10/11/2007, -8/+27its just 10 fans who have multiple accounts.
- gonzoblair, on 10/11/2007, -2/+20"According to various message boards" is the worst opening in any news article.
- threemagic, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17What if XM canceled your favorite baseball team games for a month because of something one of the pitchers brother said?
- tdmoney, on 10/11/2007, -3/+17According to www.cancelxm.com there were 38,000 yesterday alone, if the truth is anywhere near that number they are definitely feeling it.
Everyone keep canceling! America is not run by the morality police. - liljimmynorton, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14So paying for radio is stupid? But paying for cable or satelite is different? I suppose paying for broadband is stupid too, because you can just get dialup for cheaper....
- ahawks, on 10/11/2007, -4/+17@lordthor:
What does the article YOU posted about some tablet PC design have anything to do with XM radio? Spam is spam. - endustry, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15So now XM is basically no different than CBS Radio but I have to pay for XM? Oooooo, where do I sign up?
- NinjaBoy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12They just need to start a podcast.
- decadre, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11umm but company regulation is still censorship. They advertised uncensored content.
cen·sor /ˈsɛnsər/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[sen-ser] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
–noun 1. an official who examines books, plays, news reports, motion pictures, radio and television programs, letters, cablegrams, etc., for the purpose of suppressing parts deemed objectionable on moral, political, military, or other grounds.
Looks to me "other grounds" could mean anything, and could and probably does include company regulations.
Therefore, XM was offering uncensored content even though they were advertising uncensored content. - bnl771, on 10/11/2007, -4/+14@hdtvdust
I'm an O&A fan and even I think you're statement is asinine.
Borat was everywhere (God help us). He is far more known than O&A. - bnl771, on 10/11/2007, -3/+13Out of the kindness of their hearts?
These talented gentlemen deserve to paid according to their contracts with XM and not kicked out on their asses to podcast-land. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -5/+14Not answering to the FCC is not the same as a company regulating what is said on their own service.
- delaen, on 10/11/2007, -5/+14@Enfenestrate
Call and try to cancel. See how long it takes. Notice the phone worker's "Jesus, another one" attitude when you tell them why you want to cancel. - tdmoney, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10you don't have to pay extra for O&A... you haven't for over a year now
- diggerphelps, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10I'm a Stern fan, but I find this [alleged] move by XM completely unconscionable (hey, I'm a Howard fan that reads :-).
Nobody who signed up for XM for O&A did so hoping to get Sunrise Semester.
XM is spineless if they don't stick by their guys. - admirabumblebee, on 10/11/2007, -4/+13Difference being that XM IS a success with millions of subscribers
Though I hardly doubt losing a few thousand is that big of a deal when they are about to/trying to merge with sirus anyways.
I would also imagine that if they DID reinstant O&A that even MORE people would unsubscribe who were 'outraged' (or told to be outraged more accurately) by it ALONG with losing advertisers. - x00x, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Where's Imus when you need him?
- twistymcgee, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Then why are you even commenting on this?
- decadre, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8oh God, I can't go back to regular radio.
- diggerphelps, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Not for nothing, but why does very news story I read about this 'incident' claim that O&A said they wanted to 'rape' them?
The word 'rape' is not in the audio I've heard.
It's just some insignificant 'homeless' guy saying he'd love to [have sex with] Condoleezza.
He never says anything about forcing her into it, just that he'd like to do it.
OK, so it's crude and impolitic, but it is not against the law to articulate one's sexual fantasies about public figures.
This still ain't no monarchy, no matter what has transpired in recent history. - skoles, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8Hurrr!
They were on XM for 2 years before splitting the show to FM/XM. So yes, they are a flagship title for XM's service. As a Howard fan and Sirius subscriber I'm behind them (O&A) for the reason they were suspended. Completely unacceptable coming from a pay service that advertises the channel as being adult themed and giving the listener the option to BLOCK it if they don't like it. - ahawks, on 10/11/2007, -6/+12I would bet that for every person canceling due to censorship, there's someone else willing to sign up BECAUSE XM is "putting an end to that filth"
There are way too many narrow minded people in this country who adore censorship. So long as they're not the ones being censored. - ateabullet, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8Amazing how many Howard bots are out there that completely miss the point. Whether you listen to O&A or not, whether you like them or not, the fact remains that they were censored and silenced on a platform that bills itself as "uncensored". That is the reason we pay for satellite radio just like we pay for HBO and Showtime. Anyone who pays for any cable channel in fact does so because of how boring and stale regular TV got, and radio is exactly the same. If you didn't like what you were listening to, you could change the channel. If what was coming out of your radio disturbed your "decency" sensibilities, you have the option to call XM and have the channel blocked on your radio, just like you can call and cancel the Playboy channel if you don't want it in your living room. The fact that this occurred should be alarming to ANYONE who has a satellite radio subscription since XM and Sirius will be one and the same shortly. Therefore, the same rules will apply to "Howard" fans as well. If not today, then very soon. So whether you like O&A or not, get your head out of the ground for just a moment and realize this can happen to {insert radio personality here} just as well. It's about time people start getting angry about the "Moral Minority" telling us what we can and can't listen to before it is too late.
- ziggy88, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7***** that i'm going back to HAM radio!
- Enfenestrate, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5It's spin. Most people won't bother to listen to the audio, or even read a transcript. They will just take the media's word for it that the audio included rape jokes.
- tdmoney, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8don't wait, cancel today... it's the principle
- Kinjiru, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I'm also a stern fan but I have been more than vocal in all of the threads about this and while i can't stand opie & dopie personally I think their being suspended/fired is a complete load of *****. Uncensored = Uncensored.. otherwise cancel any XM subscription and if they try to charge any fee just tell them flat out that the contract is null and void and a full refund is owed since they are in breach of said contract. They are selling "Uncensored" radio after all and by way of this O&A debacle.
- liljimmynorton, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7So let me get this right, when digg was censoring the DVD key it was bad, and everyone was outraged. But when a radio company does it to entertainers it's not bad.
How soon we seem to forget.... - freehunter, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6"you don't have to pay extra for O&A... you haven't for over a year now"
Probably because they raised the fees up enough to make it like everyone is paying for them. Anyway, he said he hasn't listened in a while, so that while might have been over a year ago. - Subiklim, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6'Radios'. They aren't possessive.
- existx, on 10/11/2007, -4/+9I just cancelled my subscription. I thought the whole point of satellite radio was minimal restrictions (that being the restrictions of terrestial radio). I guess not...
- Craig42, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5It's called negative reinforcement. The consumer removes what the corporation wants (money - a monthly subscription), to influence the likelihood of a certain behavior (maintaining a free and uncensored environment for Opie and Anthony). It's a common thing actually with protests and boycotts. The advertisers are actually using the same concept too by removing advertising revenue to influence the likelihood of "safer" radio.
They're fairly simple concepts that a child could understand, but i'm not surprised someone with a name like RollFizzlebeef doesn't get it. - Regulator980, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4This is what happens when you apologize for something when you didn't do anything wrong--you get suspended or fired.
- AZWolf7, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Well, I am definitely not a pest. And I canceled. I won't tolerate censorship on a platform that touts freedom of speech. And if it's just 10 people canceling, I wonder why it took me 30 minutes waiting to cancel, and the CSR told me they have been dealing with a large number of cancellations as a result, which is why they are offering up to 6 month free service, assurances they weren't fired and discounts to keep the account open. I don't think that's the result of just 10 people counting or calls from "pests".
- threemagic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4right now it's Ron and Fez.. not as good, but at times entertaining
- Tenric, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4You're forgetting that all the NFL games are on Sirius
- tdmoney, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Censorship also happens b/c corporations decide to be the morality police... like wal-mart not selling certain books or movies or CDs
Sure, it's their right to make those choices but it is also my right not to spend my money with them - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Wrong. Your iPod will not automatically expose you and your peers to interesting new music. That's the problem with all this "***** so-and-so, just go to obscureIndieMusic.com" logic: It means that everyone is holed up listening to their own obscure music, and we've lost the fun of hit songs that mark eras in our lives together, songs that get the whole car rocking on a road trip when you pull them out 10 years later.
- sideshowRAHEEM, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Who decides whats decent? The bottom line is that O&A and there guests have made jokes like this on pretty much a daily basis since they've been on XM an now out of the ***** blue XM suspends them because some ***** who is just looking to get O&A in trouble sent the audio clip to every blog and media outlet, if XM truly cared about "decency" like they claim to they do then they would have suspended or fired them after the very first "offensive" comment they made on there very first XM show. XM has started something very dangerous what if Bill Maher, John Stewart, Steven Colbert, or even Bill O'reilly say something that upsets the left or right all those people broadcast on pay services but who's to say the Dem's or Rep's wont put presser on the sponsers or network to have the show removed. WAKE UP!!!!!!!! Corporate censorship censorship is allot scarier than governmental censorship because the constitution doesn't protect us from corporate censorship the only way to prevent it is for the consumer to stand up and say there not gonna take it.
- twistymcgee, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Exactly. Getting booted for doing what you are getting paid to do seems counter productive and perhaps would leave you a little confused.
- trouble916, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Call them like you're looking to subscribe, ask if their XL channels are uncensored because you've been hearing something in the news. I'd be curious to hear what they have to say.
