caldwell@fas.harvard.edu - dangerz, on 10/10/2007, -12/+98I like how the internet is returning power back to the people. It's made it so we can band together regardless of our locations.
- tehWyman, on 08/19/2009, -14/+98Honestly, and maybe I'm alone in this, but I really don't care about either side.
- izzydahedgehog, on 11/02/2007, -15/+68I almost feel bad for what will happen to this chick if her cell phone # and email address are dugg up to the front page.
...almost. Give 'er Hell boys. - foxingworth, on 10/10/2007, -1/+32It's a girl, of course no one on digg called.
- Beatmiser, on 10/10/2007, -5/+32To those who keep saying that the girl posted this in public, please go back and read the article- it's no where near that cut and dry. Secondly, you've missed several key points regarding violation of terms of service for Facebook and undeniable journalistic ethical violations.
- canewediggit, on 10/10/2007, -10/+33i'm sorry, but if you put anything about yourself online, you can't claim it as "private". if you didn't want the world to know, don't put it on the world wide web. i have no sympathy for either of them.
- petalthrow, on 10/10/2007, -5/+28karma..
- tjasond, on 10/10/2007, -1/+24Hereth the video of her performanth on Thee Enn Enn: http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/bestoftv/2007/08/07/am.family.feud.intv.cnn
"My yearth of compulthive fathebooking have finally paid off" - pintomp3, on 10/10/2007, -5/+27i don't think people should be hounding children for political stories, but if you want privacy, don't setup a facebook.
- sundancekid503, on 10/10/2007, -0/+19Never get another job? She's probably on the fast track to getting a good job because of this. Sad, but true.
- Zarxrax, on 10/10/2007, -14/+29The girl posted this ***** in public. How has her privacy been violated? This is just lame. If its open to anyone from her school, thats PUBLIC.
- oirvine, on 10/10/2007, -4/+18No, it's not legal. That's harassment.
- ReinMasamuri, on 10/10/2007, -11/+25Amen. This woman is scum and embodies all that is wrong with our media.
- MOJIRA, on 05/17/2008, -2/+16The long, repetitive, and overly-preachy article doesn't help draw sympathy from me.
- canewediggit, on 10/10/2007, -6/+19what fight would that be? the "i'm so stupid i put information i wanted to keep private on an open to anyone social network and i think it's unfair someone noticed it" fight?
- Quicksdraw, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14You had me at "underage daughter".
- reddevil3, on 10/10/2007, -8/+20Fair game.
- trogdoor, on 10/10/2007, -4/+16This isn't Scientology.
- sabach, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14Thanks. I always told my daughters that if you wouldn't say it in a crowded room, don't say it anywhere on the internet. Case in point and common sense.
- qhor, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12http://xkcd.com/300/
Now I see why that was "#14". - brycelb, on 10/10/2007, -12/+23Cheers. This is a very intelligent article that is as neutral as it gets. The press have become a parasite.
- IRoaChI, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12It is so she gets a taste of her own medicine. The saying goes 'Treat others they way you want them to treat you'.
- tekz0r, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10That is exactly why the internet is so great; and also why the internet is in danger of being censored..
www.savetheinternet.com - guardian079, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Unfortunately I believe Ms. Caldwell and CLS of Classically Liberal are both "wrong" in this situation. Ms. Caldwell brought to the main stream media, details of a minor. Regardless, where they were posted, they are details of a MINOR. Journalist or not, get a spine and write a real piece. And as for, CLS you provided the private contact info for Ms. Caldwell, and seemed to promote the idea of harassing the young woman.
- blorc, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11Hack the Gibson!
- xrisnothing, on 10/10/2007, -10/+19Facebook is private now???
- nreynolds, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7*want* is probably the key word. It's actually completely anti-"give someone a taste of their own medicine." It basically means that just because someone is an *****, don't be an ***** back.
- mrgreg, on 10/10/2007, -7/+14Quite frankly, I think the idiot at "Classically Liberal" is just as bad, if not worse, than Caldwell.
Yes, it was quite intrusive to post a news story like this, and for her to write it using such slant-statements as "Caroline's Facebook profile does not reveal why she doesn't want her father to win the White House," but seriously, to one-up her in jackassness and post her personal information, as well as demean her by calling her a "whore," "slime merchant," "sleazy," as well as an array of other insults is debatable as worse than what she did. Look in the mirror, guy, you fit every definition of those terms by being no better than her, and writing a hateful rant instead of calling her out properly and formally. Good riddance. - otheruser, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6It's with a G, not J.
Anyways, JOURNALISTS do this called INVESTIGATIVE work, in which their indentity often prevents them from obtaining important information. Misrepresentation is not a crime and is definitely not a taboo in the field of journalism. - nudedos, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9Has anyone called?
- h4mx0r, on 10/10/2007, -4/+10Time to take the fight back to the media!
- gwolf, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Well she did try to conceal he identity and the site rules prohibited the other participants from revealing other members information. Her expectation of privacy was not unreasonable. I am sure she wasn't trying to embarrass her father. To Julianni's credit he didn't raise a child who couldn't think for her self and form her own opinions.
This reporter behaved unethically by obtaining information by misrepresenting her self to a minor in an attempt to attack her father for political purposes. The reporter should be fired and her employers and her self sued for braking the sites confidentiality clause. - otheruser, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Reporter: Hi, I'm calling to ask about your firm's work with XYZ.
Firm: Uh, sorry, we're busy!
A. Richman: Hi, I'm calling to ask about your firm's work with XYZ.
Firm: Sure, let's arrange a meeting.
Investigative journalism often relies on misrepresentation, simply because the information would be unaccesible otherwise. There is NOTHING wrong with that.
However, in such a petty case, it'll be difficult to justify having to resort to misrepresenting yourself (ethically speaking). - rednorth, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6oh rly???? this bitch is a child molester. she deserves worse than she will ever get. this is what i hate about the press, they'll say anything for a dollar. pricks
- martissimo, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Even if it wasn't a public group, you have to think as a presidential candidates daughter that somebody somewhere in that group will pick up on it and tell somebody else, you have a huge target on your back whether it's right or wrong, you do.
It's only common sense not post to stuff on the internet you wouldn't want made public, especially if you are a somebody - taxhappens, on 11/02/2007, -7/+12Great article and yes out this journalist, just because you can doesn't mean you should.
Thanks - shaka776, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7It's cold and heartless to make fun of someone with a lisp. THO THTOP IT!
- otheruser, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Joining a Pro-Obama facebook group would lead any reasonable person to assume the individual supports Obama...
Secondly, if you're the daughter of a famous presidential candidate, joining your father's opponent's facebook group is just idiotic. - Jeveran, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Ms. Caldwell may have broken some rules along with breaking the story:
http://webdocs.registrar.fas.harvard.edu/ugrad_handbook/current/ - IanCube, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4There's a great article about the ethics of all this here.
"Instances like these illustrate the modern day ethical issues we all face in using everyday technology. Clearly there are opinions on both sides of the fence as the whether using such information is ethical. Which side of the fence do you sit on? Tell us in the comments."
http://www.tethics.com/2007/08/07/slate-article-daddy-dearest-causing-controvery/ - CaptainSponge, on 10/10/2007, -7/+11Massive rant, but makes a point. The journo will never get another job... as a Journalism graduate, she should be ashamed of herself.
- bdpf, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4So what is Ms. Caldwell, is she a journalist?
A collage student, blond airhead, with no sense as to what is proper. - BobsYourUncle, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6No, we just lose depth perception.
- LecherousVenom, on 10/10/2007, -6/+10You could have left your name and a return phone number.....because, this is all about ACCOUNTABILITY, yes!?!?
(crickets) - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4The same person calling her repeatedly would be harassment. Every Digger calling her once is almost amusing.
- mrurc, on 10/10/2007, -4/+8Actually, she didn't POST anything. That is exactly the problem. She joined a group in Facebook and that is all that she did. She did not state on the internet that she supported Obama over her father-- the reporter MADE THAT UP. And that is some bad journalism.
- Koldkompress, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Yes you could. You could just not have done it.
This kind of "Get 'em!" behavior is pathetic. Go back to a *Chan - Koldkompress, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4My top tips to keep things private:
Don't put it on the Internet.
I mean come on, folks. I don't care if she changed her last name, it's hardly an alias if her face is there.
If you don't feel comfortable with information being in the public domain, don't publish it.
I'm not saying what the Reporter did was ethical, but it's a free press. - satanatnmtedu, on 11/02/2007, -0/+3Yeah, being a vigilante is so much better than what this reporter did. Did she publish the phone number and email address of this girl? I seriously doubt it. But, people like you (and the writer of the article) are acting in an even more immature manner.
