Will Pot Ever Be Made Legal in America?
alternet.org — Marijuana occupies a bizarrely paradoxical place in American culture. Its use is widespread, commonplace among the young and ubiquitous in popular culture. Yet it remains highly illegal, and talk of legalization is usually deemed political suicide. Here are five signs that pot should be legal soon -- and five reasons why it probably won't.

- jaobedoza, on 05/01/2008, -4/+2that will be the day, followed by legal prostitution, legal everything!
- wishninja, on 05/02/2008, -1/+3Why yes it will!
- JAVandiver, on 05/02/2008, -0/+1"Hey what kind of party is this... There's no booze and only one hooker!"
- NikoKun, on 05/02/2008, -0/+4-_- Not legal everything, you fool... Just legalize the victimless non-crimes... The things which are only illegal, because of the outdated moralist prohibitions, and over-control of our personal lives.
A "free" society cannot be truly free, when such things remain crimes... When the individual doesn't have the rights of freedom and choice over their OWN bodies.
You're a fool for trying to claim legalizing such things, would lead to legal everything... Such a claim, is just as ignorant as those who compare legal Marijuana to legal murder. -_-
- wishninja, on 05/02/2008, -1/+3Why yes it will!
- imacommi, on 05/01/2008, -0/+14Prohibition doesn't work! END IT!
- JAVandiver, on 05/02/2008, -2/+1Look, with local/state governments pushing for tobacco free business, areas, and even municipalities what makes you think that the federal government would relax its stance on marijuana? Live in reality, cigarettes will become illegal and pot will not be legalized. Hell, if MADD has its way we will not even able to have a drink!
- lucidguru, on 05/01/2008, -6/+2The government makes too much money jailing, prosecuting, and spying on people for prohibition to end. Plus legalization would put a whole lot of drug dealers out of work.
- wishninja, on 05/02/2008, -0/+5negative vibes need to stop. Didn't you read the article? We need to become more organized and better at expressing the issue.
- iceman0113, on 05/02/2008, -0/+3They don't make money jailing, prosecuting, or spying on people. If anything, they are _losing_ money to fund jails, pay for prosecutors, and pay for wiretaps/spies. How would they make money? All I see are taxpayers' money going down the drain when that money could be spent on schools, libraries, and parks.
- imacommi, on 05/02/2008, -0/+1The government doesn't make money doing these things but your congressmen and senators friends who run and own the prisons and law firms certainly do make a whole lot of money on this. But I do agree that this money could be better spent on schools, libraries, and parks among other things
- rancemo, on 05/01/2008, -0/+11Pot is legal, just be careful and don't let any government thugs know. If you want liberty, you just gotta start living it. You can't wait for the group of career criminals to strike words from some sacred scroll. The aggression is on them...
- wishninja, on 05/02/2008, -0/+5wow I really like that post! I am always walking around with some guilt. But you are right, isn't any shame or guilt in smoking some weed. I'm not blowing off any of my responsibilities, I work, take care of and support my family, pay taxes, vote everything. I do not diserve to be treated like a criminal and from now on I am going to refuse to feel like one too. The aggression is on them! What choice do I have if another wants to destroy me? All I can do is try to be happy and avoid the aggressors. Man, I have a new slogan! thanks. Well for what its worth anyway.
- robertlafla, on 05/02/2008, -6/+0http://www.scragged.com/articles/a-modest-proposal ... points out some aspects of legalization that nobody had considered. The comments have a LONG discussion of some government reports which recommended legalization. The reports were suppressed.
- wishninja, on 05/02/2008, -0/+1nah Give drugs away for free? We want the end of prohibition!

- wishninja, on 05/02/2008, -0/+3Its a good read. We have gained momentum in the last two years or so. Much more then the previous 10 I have been an advocate. I am a member of DRC, it is a great organization focused on ending prohibition. I give money to them and try to always join their letter writing campaigns. I tried to get a meetup started in my area a while back but no one signed up. It is not so popular where I am people just do not want to fight it. Guess it sucks to spend so much energy on something when all you want to do is toke 4 a few minutes.

"Newt Gingrich sponsored a bill to execute pot smugglers."
Say what? - NikoKun, on 05/02/2008, -0/+5It will take a lot of work... but Legalizing Marijuana is still the right thing to do... So it is inevitable.
Ignorance and injustice can only last so long before it crumbles under it's own stupidity. Especially when it's our freedoms, being taken away pointlessly. - jjive, on 05/02/2008, -0/+3I'll toke to that.
- FranzySF, on 05/02/2008, -0/+1I will join you in that motion.
- suzywang3000, on 05/02/2008, -0/+1"2. Very few politicians support legalization"
-those who are not interested in politics will forever be ruled by those who are.
