- k3rfuffl3, on 04/13/2009, -0/+2I don't expect this story to make the front page, but it has to be said that these pirates do what they do out of necessity rather than greed. Somalia has frequent droughts, and their biggest resource is the coast. If these companies are ruining it with pollution then I'd say it's well within their rights to defend it - any true American would agree.
The whole ransom thing (which I'm guessing is out of poverty) doesn't help their cause though. If they'd distinguish between polluters and ships just passing by people would have more pity for their cause. Without condoning or condemning - I'm not overjoyed when a pirate gets a sniper round through the head. - Aminus, on 04/14/2009, -0/+1This is pretty screwed up - while I don't condone hostage-taking or piracy just for the loot, this side of the story should see a LOT more exposure.
- MrBreezy, on 04/15/2009, -0/+0Thank you K'Naan for your point of view on the matter. It seems that Ali Mahdi was doubly short sighted. By not being able to resolve the power vacuum. Then by doing business with unscrupulous westerners at the expense of any poor Somali who ekes out a living on the coast line. The wrongs all keep piling up on one another.
The UN is powerless to care for people who can't care for themselves.
