Ayn Rand and the GOP HATED each other. Hell, Rand hated the Libertarians too!
The GOP espouses free markets but besides their empty words on "capitalism", has NOTHING to do with Ayn Rand.
And Goldwater? He may have at least called himself a Republican but that's about where his similarities to the modern GOP ended.
From Obama's speech:
"What you make of your education will decide nothing less than the future of this country. What you’re learning in school today will determine whether we as a nation can meet our greatest challenges in the future."
"We need every single one of you to develop your talents, skills and intellect so you can help solve our most difficult problems. "
"Because when you give up on yourself, you give up on your country."
"So today, I want to ask you, what’s your contribution going to be? What problems are you going to solve? What discoveries will you make? What will a president who comes here in twenty or fifty or one hundred years say about what all of you did for this country? "
All of these lines are examples of the very anti-Rand "We're all in this together as one" undertones to his speech and ideology. If that's your ideology then more power to you, but claiming that Rand would love this national service/collectivist rhetoric is just ignorant. - nullcodes, on 09/08/2009, -5/+66What about the part at the end where he says he is going to provide computers and whatever miscellaneous stuff etc. to the kids?
"I’m working hard to fix up your classrooms and get you the books, equipment and computers you need to learn."
Socialism. - darkciti2, on 09/08/2009, -17/+69Beck hasn't come forth with a signed affidavit saying he didn't rape and murder that girl in 1990. Where's the original document, Glen? Why are you hiding it?
- darkciti2, on 09/08/2009, -11/+60To quote Bill Maher: "The Democrats have moved to the right and the right has moved to the mental hospital.
- darkciti2, on 09/08/2009, -14/+60You mean the Harvard Graduate guy who was president of his schools Law Review? Yeah, we elected him and we're damn glad we did.
You must have voted for the other guy - the one who crashed 4 multimillion dollar aircraft; and his illiterate sideshow girl. - Lightstab, on 09/08/2009, -10/+50Oh my. And all this time I thought he was a Harvard educated, former civil-rights-lawyer-constitutional-law-professor-junior-senator from Chicago.
Thanks for setting us straight. Next time we'll elect someone smart like George W. Bush. - nyjets21, on 09/08/2009, -3/+40I've read and love her books. What I find most interesting is how people seem unable to read the reality of our country right now. In Atlas Shrugged, Ayn Rand assumes that the leaders of industry are bright, pure and idealistic. For the book, this works well and sets up a nice counter to the mindless ***** of the government.
But in this reality, the one we live in right now, who on earth thinks the industry leaders are good at what they do? All they do is manipulate government reforms and regulations through lobbyists so they can maximize profit while shortending the consumer. Which, by all accounts, is not what Ayn Rand had intended when she wanted pure free market economy. We don't live in that world. She also does not account for a political leader like Obama. He has a head on his shoulders and is not part of the blind leading the blind (i.e. the wonderfully inept GOP).
So please, let go of the knee-jerk reaction that you feel you can immediately connect Ayn Rand to anything anti-liberal or anti-government... the system we live in is not the system she wrote about. Industry leaders are just as blind if not more so than government to the needs of the consumer. They are good a lobbying, not inventing. - ianmgull, on 09/08/2009, -44/+79I find it odd that they quoted Glenn Beck despite all of the allegations that Glenn Beck Raped and Murdered a Young girl in 1990.
- shutaro, on 09/08/2009, -15/+47Why do you hate America?
- inactive, on 09/08/2009, -24/+56My thoughts on this are that it is very disrespectful of schools not to show the presidents speech live.
- Pyehole, on 09/08/2009, -24/+53It's too bad that they are incapable of being ashamed.
- TimtheTaxMan, on 09/08/2009, -10/+38OK read the article and the speech. What part would Ayn Rand have loved? I don't see many, if any, objectivist principles laid out in it.
In fact, the nature of forced education runs against the self-determination core of objectivism. - inactive, on 09/08/2009, -13/+39Wait for Republicans to attack the speech, then turn it into an epicly patriotic speech.
Expertly played, Obama. - rolls20s, on 09/08/2009, -1/+23True. Also, comparing her to Glen Beck and the like is ridiculous. Anyone who is republican today and touts Rand is misunderstanding Objectivist principles or is delusional about what the Republican party stands for.
- mattowan, on 09/08/2009, -13/+34By the way, anyone who has read Ayn knows she would not have been a fan of that speech.
- Snoosy, on 09/08/2009, -4/+24Such as?
- downneck, on 09/08/2009, -7/+27WHY WON'T GLENN BECK COME RIGHT OUT AND DENY THESE ALLEGATIONS THAT HE RAPED AND MURDERED A YOUNG GIRL IN 1990?
- DarthVolta, on 09/08/2009, -4/+24Sometimes, the internet makes me fear for the future of the human race. The stupid community organizer comments, the Maobama comments, the birther comments, the people who are convinced that the speech was rewritten, it all is so illogical, and so blatantly inspired by fear and hatred and bigotry, that it just makes me want to vomit.
Seriously, the administration has been saying from the start that this speech was just an encouragement for children to stay in school and take their education seriously. Why would they claim that, and then plan on having Obama give a speech that's all political propaganda? Other than the obvious fact that it's not based on any type of facts whatsoever, it wouldn't even be logical if you did think that the Obama administration is evil somehow. It's not even internally consistent.
Setting aside the obvious idiocy of the propaganda and the socialist agenda claims, and just for the sake of argument assuming that Obama really is an evil Marxist Nazi Socialist Kenyan Terrorist, why would he give a speech trying to 'brainwash' children? He already knows that everything he does is dissected by the right as it is, why feed the fire? As I said, it's not consistent or logical, even if you try to look at it from their viewpoint. - zalaz, on 09/08/2009, -3/+22The ignorance of this digger's title line to the comparison of Ayn Rand is laughable, if not downright revisionist. If one READS "Atlas Shrugged", one would see that all that was discussed in that fictional tale is coming to pass today. Government is gaining more and more control, and in that, a culture of mediocrity is established and perpetuated.
Now before you go off on this reply, please keep in mind that this is not a partisan attack. I must give Obama credit for being more true to his party's philosophical underpinnings. I can understand a lefty for being too left, but to have rampant government spending and control - and rationalize it under the guise of "fear" - well, that sickens me. I am a financially conservative, right-leaning libertarian and the republicans should be ashamed of themselves. I respect everyone's right to their opinion, but I reserve the right to comment on flaws in their argument (as I perceive them). If I am wrong, I will admit the weakness in my argument. It is called civility, discourse, dissent and respect. We hope to learn from each other, not just try to "prove" we are right.
THAT SAID, anyone who thinks that more government control and socialism will be better for an individual American's liberty and success, really has absolutely NO IDEA what capitalism (or Ayn Rand, for that matter) is about. I take issue with the ignorance of this digger's title and premise. It is revisionist - at best - to think that Ayn Rand would be supportive of Obama. It is unfortunate as many diggers will just read the title and begin to incorporate that meme into their understanding of reality. I am sure Kevin Rose sees this as a very powerful potential for Digg, one that is full of risk and incredible burden. If he doesn't he should. Hope he has adequate knowledge of the psychology of marketing and news (or at least professionals who do employed in Digg).
If you want to read one of the best books of this time period, please read "Atlas Shrugged". Don't let the 1000+ pages intimidate you. Just do 5-10 pages a night. I promise you it will be more than 5-10 pages a night. It may be the best book I have ever read.

(zafshrink@yahoo.com) - trolleyfan, on 09/08/2009, -34/+53"Republicans find themselves even looking more like a bunch of fools" Is that possible? I mean, eventually *everything* has a lowest possible level and I thought the Repubs had been *there* for months.
- SteveMTyler, on 09/08/2009, -9/+27for real?
- Gruul, on 09/08/2009, -0/+18"Would you kindly" do your homework ?
- inactive, on 09/08/2009, -0/+16Exactly...and furthermore anyone who is a fan of Ayn Rand would be offended for her being compared to Barry Goldwater and Glenn Beck
- inactive, on 09/08/2009, -5/+21The only propaganda is emanating from the GOP. It strikes me as funny how those of you who feel it necessary to bastardize President Obama's name in order to punctuate a weak argument.
- B1665r, on 09/08/2009, -5/+19It was obvious that Bush 43 was reading that book on 9/11/2001 instead of giving a policy speech because he might of accidently said something brain dead stupid.
- browwiw, on 09/08/2009, -5/+19You forgot your '/s'
- kingofinternet, on 09/08/2009, -3/+17maobama?
hahahaha what a *****. - insertAliasHere, on 09/08/2009, -0/+14You people sicken me, for *****'s sake. This is why I won't and haven't called myself a republican for years now.
I have never seen this much vicious hatred for one person who deserved it less in my life. Look, criticize the guy for what he deserves to be criticized on, but when it comes to stuff like this, SHUT THE ***** UP. You make all us real conservatives look bad. You make us all look like hate-filled idiots who are so desperate to find a reason to hate someone that they'll latch on to just about anything.
Even now that you've read the speech and found nothing wrong with it, you're still talking *****. Others are saying that it's been edited to remove the political agenda. Some people even were claiming that Obama was going to ask the kids to take an oath to him, but got rid of it because people found out.
That's the most ridiculous ***** I've heard in a long time. Why don't you think back to when you were a child. What did you think about the president? Did you care about his economic policy? Did you care about his opinion on health care or national defense? No, because you were a ***** child, and couldn't care less about stupid ***** like that. My thoughts on the president were that he was an important guy, and he was cool because he got to fly in a plane everywhere. Even if he did try to brainwash your kids, it wouldn't take, because these kids are KIDS! THEY DON'T CARE! 10 minutes of the president speaking to them won't change the years of teaching them that you've done, and the years of teaching still to come.
Get over yourselves.
Signed,
A Real Conservative. One who's ex-party is beyond saving; one who is disgusted by the climate that current "conservative" leaders are cultivating. - Mujokan, on 09/08/2009, -2/+16You could tell from the lesson plans that it was always going to be on exactly these themes. It is typical, classic Obama rhetoric in its content and style. I would bet little or nothing was changed due to the "controversy".
- velveetaavenger, on 09/08/2009, -1/+14What are you complaining about? He put on the flag pin, America's true measure of patriotism
- jeffiek, on 09/08/2009, -2/+15Yes, there is an anti-Rand undercurrent, but it's at a surprisingly low level.
I just wish he would behave the way he preaches. Fine for the kids to take responsibility and work hard.
The banks, the auto industry? The "cash-for-clunkers"? Health care?
He practices the "everybody is responsible for everybody else" philosophy. - austinwpetersen, on 09/08/2009, -0/+12Stop making sense! It interferes with my sense of self righteousness!
- Scottamus, on 09/08/2009, -6/+18Yea, Beck never responded to questions and refused to do an interview about the girl. I wonder what he's hiding.
- nullcodes, on 09/08/2009, -2/+14Socialism. Run for the hills!
- amoirae, on 09/08/2009, -3/+15The girl's name was Kenya?

- the2989, on 09/08/2009, -4/+16If that's socialism, I like it!
- WraTH017, on 09/08/2009, -5/+16Next time you try to put down somebody's work history, make sure it's not an incredibly popular president who also happens to be a young and brilliant orator, an inspirational figure, a self made man and highly accomplished constitutional lawyer and former junior senator of Illinois and not to mention a racial barrier breaking first black president of the USA.
Your profile says you're 31, so you have 17 years to achieve what he achieved. Go! - DanielWashburn, on 09/08/2009, -2/+13Thank you for sticking up for Ms. Rand.
"Civilization is the progress toward a society of privacy. The savage's whole existence is public, ruled by the laws of his tribe. Civilization is the process of setting man free from men. " -Ayn Rand - LemonMachete, on 09/08/2009, -9/+20are you ***** kidding me
- the2989, on 09/08/2009, -3/+14"Jeez, you must have gotten that concentrated form of Kool-Aid with no water in it."
Irony at it's greatest. You must not know what patriotism is, Obama has more of it than almost anybody. - Zomgondo, on 09/08/2009, -0/+11Yeah. At least McCain would've bitched about kids these days and told them to get off his lawn.
- KJSatz, on 09/08/2009, -0/+11And ***** Glen Beck.
- browwiw, on 09/08/2009, -6/+16Because America's not in the Bible.
- throop77, on 09/08/2009, -1/+11I know what patriotism is. Its the retarded belief that being born in some random country makes one better than someone else born in some other random country.
- boomchockalocka, on 09/08/2009, -3/+13Ayn Rand was a Republican. She even worked full-time on a Republican presidential ticket in the 40s. However, that was back in the day when Republicans weren't crazy. She'd spit on every last one of them today.
- deathandtaverns, on 09/08/2009, -4/+14can somebody tell me what's wrong with being a community organizer? I thought conservatives wanted to solve problems at the community level instead of the federal government stepping in to do it. Isn't that the essence of anything called "grass roots?"
- fury420, on 09/08/2009, -8/+18didn't Obama spend a dozen years TEACHING constitutional law?
oh yeah, that's right, he did! - Congzilla, on 09/08/2009, -6/+16I guess they should stop paying for it to then?
A president giving a speech has absolutely nothing to do with the federal governments constitutional authority. Presidents also throw out the first pitch of a World Series game, that doesn't make them involved with MLB either. - inactive, on 09/08/2009, -3/+13You're funny, ndrehobl.
