- novenator, on 03/02/2009, -11/+126Anyone who opposes this on 'moral' grounds needs to recheck their moral foundation and ask themselves what they would do if this was one of their parents in pain.
- inactive, on 03/02/2009, -10/+83It's a shame that's this is not a federal law. There's nothing wrong with one being allowed to have their pain and suffering ended. Anything less then giving them that very right... is selfish.
This is just more ***** that is tied directly to religious beliefs. There is no justification to withhold someone's right to end their own life... you're right...it IS the "morally" correct thing to do. - drowningfish, on 03/02/2009, -5/+74You cannot have the "right to life" without the "right to death".
- Dipsomaniac, on 03/02/2009, -9/+75Remember, kids - just because you would ease the suffering of a pet if it was in horrible pain with a terminal disease, that doesn't mean you should be able to do that for a loved one when they knowingly ask for it!
/sarcasm, for those who didn't spot it. - Persian5Life, on 03/02/2009, -3/+52you should be allowed to do anything you want as long as you don't hurt or violate other peoples rights. choosing to die with dignity is a personal matter and the state should not interfere.
- SQLserver, on 03/02/2009, -13/+56Hurray! Anyone who opposes euthanasia is just sick.(Or extremely religious, but one could argue that they are the same thing.)
- kingofthisnight, on 03/02/2009, -2/+35All I can think about is a David Cross quote.
"I think its funny how, that if I want to die with peace and dignity that there's someone far away that can prevent it. Someone's like 'Hi, I just wanted to call. This is Jeanette Dunwoody from Valdosta, Georgia. I heard that you're trying to kill yourself and I just wanna say that, well, you can't.' 'What?' 'Yeah, its not right, because all life is precious.' 'No, my life isn't precious, Ive been reduced to a ***** and piss factory. I hurt always. I'm going to die within a year and I'm in pain constantly.' 'Oh, but um...no. Because of the Bible.' 'Well, I don't believe in the Bible.' 'Well, I do, silly!'" - johnomaz, on 03/02/2009, -2/+35My wife already knows that if I get in a terrible accident and require machines to keep me alive to not allow it. Same with this. If I get sick and know I have no chance at surviving, I don't want to be revived if I die. I'm not scared of death. Its a part of life.
- shulkman, on 03/02/2009, -4/+351. Get diagnosed with Cancer.
2. Liquidate all possesions, go to Vegas, snort large quantities of blow off many hooker's thighs.
3. Come home and hit the doctor up. - pintomp3, on 03/02/2009, -1/+29The freedom to live your life the way you see fit should include the freedom to die as you see fit.
- vidaliasweet, on 03/02/2009, -0/+26You might want to check your prognosis first.
- Hetman, on 03/02/2009, -2/+28If I ever become terminally ill I am moving to washington. Every state should allow this.
- ironhide, on 03/02/2009, -2/+25Good, we've had a similar law in Oregon for quite a while.
- inactive, on 03/02/2009, -3/+26animals have been enjoying this luxury for too long, its about time us humans got a piece of the action.
- unknownpoltroon, on 03/02/2009, -1/+23I have informed my family, If I am in a vegetative state, send in a Angelina Jolie with a Guinness. If there is no response, pull the plug.
- keyforce, on 03/02/2009, -1/+22Closet?
- MelekTawus, on 03/02/2009, -0/+18Wrong, the "nobility in suffering" crowd wouldn't be against the woman killing a potential rapist, but if he got her pregnant they would force her to give birth to his child.
- MacEnvy, on 03/02/2009, -0/+17She's just going to try to adopt you, you know.
- 1RandomNickname, on 03/02/2009, -0/+17The point is to keep doctors that assist terminally ill patients with a peaceful suicide out of jail, you nitwit.
- Bloodweaver, on 03/02/2009, -1/+16Then you are saying people don't have the right to their own bodies. If something is yours you should be able to do what you want with it, if it is not you shouldn't.
- moleeyes, on 03/02/2009, -0/+15You have to look at it from the rapist's point of view though
- Pstall, on 03/02/2009, -0/+15Not sure if these are the same crowd...
- Stavrosian, on 03/02/2009, -1/+14Well think of it like this: why should they not have the right to do it? If there's no satisfactory answer to that question then I'd have to consider that a person has a right to end their own life.
- penguinofspades, on 03/02/2009, -1/+14i voted for that!
- Vosona, on 03/02/2009, -1/+13"Tough it out son, cancer's nothing but God testing your will. You don't need any fancy medicine! Let's pray!"
- dygel, on 03/02/2009, -0/+12FTA: "The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 2006 that it was up to states to regulate medical practice, including assisted suicide..."
In other words, this cannot be a federal law. - Aadain, on 03/02/2009, -0/+11The law it more aimed at those who are in acute pain. This isn't for the cancer patient who isn't suffering yet but is sad about having cancer. In Oregon you have to go through counseling first and need to actively be suffering. Someone who is simply depressed by a disease can't use this law and doctors are told to watch out for it.
- Verchiel77, on 03/02/2009, -2/+13Waiting for the Nutters who defend anti-gay marriage and abortion restrictions with "it should be left up to the states" to suddenly find a need for the Federal government to step in...
- tmyprod, on 03/02/2009, -1/+12I thought we already had an assisted suicide program in place, it's called the Aurora Bridge.
- m3mn0n, on 03/02/2009, -0/+11HOW DARE YOU DIE!
- Marcer, on 03/02/2009, -2/+13Slippery slope arguments usually suck.
- vidaliasweet, on 03/02/2009, -1/+11I got freaked out on this whole subject after seeing Dr. Kevorkian's artwork. I'm not against assisted suicide at all, but I can't imagine how comforting this guys methods really were.
Just cuz it's weird and interesting, have a look:
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/kevorkian/ ... - dygel, on 03/02/2009, -0/+10I support the measure on a case-by-case basis, which is where Washington seems to be at with it. Consider for instance patients with terminal bowel cancer. The last moments of these individuals will be spent vomiting blood until they are dead. They will waste away to nothing and die in a most horiffic manner. Most of the time, this will happen long after they have come to grips with their own impending death, and what they seek is a dignified death. For cases like these, I wholly support the right to elect a dignified death through physician assisted suicide.
- itsbob, on 03/02/2009, -1/+10But they can't prescribe marijuana?!?!
WTF, seriously WTF - ZeeZee2k, on 03/02/2009, -0/+9To be fair, they never get to make that decision themselves.
- aratika, on 03/02/2009, -1/+10Yeah...anything to get away from a son willing to put a .45 slug into her head.
- Jem7vwh, on 03/02/2009, -3/+12It should be personal choice anyways!
- JesusSaidSo, on 03/02/2009, -4/+13I call *****.
Conservatives are the "nobility in suffering" crowd that are against what is stated in the article.
Liberals are the ones against common citizens being armed and able to defend themselves. - geneticlemon, on 03/02/2009, -0/+8Crackle.
- satchthegreat, on 03/02/2009, -0/+8thank god, i always said i'd kill myself if i got into that situation, but was afraid of the consequences because its illegal...
- irvin666, on 03/02/2009, -7/+15Sometimes I wonder if Christians are closet masochists.
- Aadain, on 03/02/2009, -0/+8Its actually interesting here in Oregon. After the initial increase in doctor assisted suicides when the law went into effect, the numbers have actually gone down a lot. Its actually preventing suicides.
- geneticlemon, on 03/02/2009, -0/+8Pop.
- 3leggedHorse, on 03/02/2009, -1/+9It's nice to see there is some commonsense around in the world.
- rmad1949, on 03/02/2009, -3/+11Finally, some action. After watching my 100% cognitive father choke to death on an incurable strain of pneumonia in the old folks home... I am 100% for this. Those that oppose this on the grounds of their moral and guilt ridden religious beliefs... let me say this... you have had the world f***** up forever, since the beginning of time... go pump your fantasyland bs somewhere else with the rest of your nut job friends and die your horrific 'Let God do His will' death and let those of us that believe in the free will of Man go about our business of compassion, caring and love by letting those that desire to end their suffering die in peace. My God does not object to the science given us all to ease the pain of those suffering, even when the cure is not known and the only known outcome is a miserable painful death. Sinners do not die categorized or color coded forms of death based on type of sin they committed. We have all sinned like the church goers love to say and in the end we all just die at the hands of 1000's of different scenarios. We all should have this access to this choice of dying with dignity and the least amount of suffering as possible.
BUT, here is the problem. A person that will be allowed to die will be proven to be of sound mind. In other words, we cannot just line up those that someone deems suffering i.e., the retarded (developmentally disabled for those hung up on political correctness), the unconscious, the suicidal, etc. etc. THE ONE QUESTION from the shrinks: How can a man or woman be considered sane and able to make decisions on their own behalf while signing a paper allowing them to die? - geneticlemon, on 03/02/2009, -0/+8Snap.
- bakamas, on 03/02/2009, -0/+7it's definitely the opposite crowds.
- Dipsomaniac, on 03/02/2009, -0/+7Killing yourself with painkillers or sleeping pills is trickier than you might think, and often ends up in a patient with brain damage or some such. Bringing doctors in to help ensures that there's both dignity and effectiveness at the end.
- tom957, on 03/02/2009, -1/+8@ Kosh: Let's see how you feel when you or your wife/son/daughter are lying on their death bed, obviously not having quality life. If you can do it to your own pet, then why can't we do it to ourselves?
@ everyone else: Religion, once again, is not the answer. - Leezus, on 03/02/2009, -0/+7@Kosh: There's a saying something to the effect of one's rights ending where another's begin. By this, your gun analogy fits very well, simply not as you intended. You are allowed to use your gun, your property as you see fit so long as it doesn't impugn on the rights of another, which gunning down children I would think certainly does. So then, how does ending your life impugn on anyone else's rights?
As for the ownership of your body, well that's an entirely different philosophical argument that from a secular, legal view is fairly well decided against your proposed idea. I don't see it as relevant here.
And Stravosian's approach to rights is correct because they are so special. A right is innate until adequate reason is given for it to be taken away. -
