- inactive, on 11/05/2008, -67/+599Looks like the WSJ is trolling us.
- obliviousfool, on 11/05/2008, -111/+429Oh. I thought this was going to be a story about how many times George W. Bush should have been impeached and imprisoned; how the world handled him with kid gloves while he dragged America through the sewer.
- inactive, on 11/05/2008, -95/+341Bush has been nothing but an OUTRIGHT FAILURE. He leaves us with Iraq, Afghanistan, an economic crisis, record deficits, record debt, tattered constitutional protections, a policy of torture, anti-science policies, rampant cronyism, a failed response to Katrina, the worst terrorist attack ever to occur on U.S. soil, Osama bin Laden still free, lies about WMDs, growing poverty rates, and more Americans without health insurance.
The media has failed to do its job if it HASN'T POINTED OUT THE ABJECT FAILURE OF THE BUSH PRESIDENCY. - cyberdork, on 11/05/2008, -103/+304Considering that Bush is nothing less than a war criminal who killed a couple hundred thousand people in his 8 years...
But yeah I understand the republican logic.. criticizing a president for war crimes is disrespectful. But criticizing a president for receiving a blowjob from an intern is fair game... - inactive, on 11/05/2008, -48/+213This piece conveniently leaves out the grandmother of all eff ups: Iraq. Not to say all the attacks on Bush are deserved, but they went up exponentially when it became clear Iraq was not going as promised.
- reeldigitalpro, on 11/05/2008, -84/+222what a crock of *****! please... Bush deserves to be impeached, not patted on the back
- johnlabmonkey, on 11/05/2008, -108/+215Oh yes, poor mistreated Georgie, I weep for his hurt widdle feewlings.
- kingUssop, on 11/05/2008, -45/+127Bush has been a disgrace to the US, and to the world. Nice attempt at revisionist history WSJ but there's more documentation on this crazy President than anyone in history. He will never be turned into the fake hero you delusional hardcore want.
- ibediggin, on 11/05/2008, -130/+205This article is semi-retarded. I've seen things dumber...but not a lot of things.
- faithhealer, on 11/05/2008, -44/+119FTA: "This is the price Mr. Bush is paying for trying to work with both Democrats and Republicans."
Other than Immigration reform, Bush did not live up to his promise to work with both parties. His idea of building consensus is "let's forget all our past differences and do things my way."
I believe Obama will truly try to reach across the isle. However, articles like this poison the well and make it less likely the Republicans will do their part. - Trublmakr, on 11/05/2008, -32/+106United States of America - Opinion: The Presidency of Bush has Been a Disgrace
.... there - Fixed that title for you. - youliveinfear, on 11/05/2008, -20/+91I can't wait to see the "respect" shown by the right wing in the Obama presidency..
- LucidOne, on 11/05/2008, -33/+103The treatment of the US Constitution by Bush is the disgrace!
- shupy, on 11/06/2008, -10/+77After 9/11 the country, and the world was completely behind American and Bush.
He squandered that good will.
He took advantage of a tragedy to pursue his personal agenda in Iraq. He insulted our Allies and offended the entire world with his arrogance.
Stand by him? He destroyed the career of Valerie Plame and her husband for his personal agenda. They have served this country for their entire careers and he stood by and allowed them to be destroyed.
Maybe when Bush starts acting like he respects this country and the people who have devoted their lives to it, he may earn the respect of the American people. He has acted like America was his personal sandbox handed down to him by Daddy.
Clinton, the man should have enough self control to keep it zipped. The white house is no one's personal playpen.
This is like saying we should Give Nixon a break. No way, the man let his personal lust for power trump his duty to serve the country.
And that is what it really comes down to: the president of the United States is a servant. A servant of the people. There is not place for hubris or arrogance. Bush does not deserve anything from this country. He has been handed everything and he squandered it all away. - sundancekid503, on 11/05/2008, -14/+78Unconditionally respecting any authority figure regardless of their actions is not something to be proud of. Review the History of the world and I think you'll find many leaders who deserved nothing but contempt.
- KSUdesigner, on 11/05/2008, -36/+96I'll agree that the criticisms against Bush have been a little over the top at times, but you can't deny that his administration has performed despicable acts against the American people and the world. The real disgrace here is that nobody is willing to hold Bush accountable for his actions.
- lonelymiddle1, on 11/05/2008, -35/+93What in the hell is Shapiro talking about? Bush was handed the biggest "benefit of the doubt" free pass ever handed to a President! He had 9/11. We stood by and gave our full support as he decided to blindly throw a dart at a map and attack Iraq. We cringed when we heard about the approval of Abu Graib. We felt uneasy about Guantanamo. We swallowed our pride and allowed illegal wire tappings to continue unchecked. We let these goons throw $800 billions dollars at our financial crisis. And now he thinks we should have been more polite? Are you ***** kidding me?
- niczar, on 11/05/2008, -16/+70Yup, my thoughts. This is a dead giveway: « This is the price Mr. Bush is paying for trying to work with both Democrats and Republicans. »
Ah ah ah. Mr Mandate, trying to work with both ... Good one Scott. - swrostmore, on 11/05/2008, -8/+59The WSJ editorial board has a consistent pattern of trolling the rest of the paper.
- BenjaminsDiggs, on 11/05/2008, -27/+76I thought this was a piece from "The Onion" at first.
- primaldefense, on 11/05/2008, -73/+120I was always taught to respect those people in authority even if we don't always agree with them or their actions. I have to agree that having at least some level of respect for everyone seems to be a thing of the past. It really is sad.
- sundancekid503, on 11/05/2008, -12/+59The majority of this country felt deceived by Mr Bush, why would they then turn and "stand by him" unconditionally.
It was Bush's own actions that turned the people against him, and people have nothing to be ashamed of in that. The American people shouldn't be blind lemmings goosestepping to their leader. Let's not forget that Bush once had sky-high approval ratings. It was through his own actions and inaction that he squandered the support of the American people.
If American people were as blindly loyal as you suggest they should be, we'd still be a British colony. - parisii, on 11/05/2008, -33/+80This article is a load of tripe. Who was responsible for making America a nation that tortures - that denies due process - who said the Constitution was "just a piece of paper," who issued more signing statements than ALL other presidents COMBINED because he thought he was "the state?" George W. Bush.
As Phillippe Sands and Col. Wilkerson, Colin Powell's former chief of staff, have amply discussed, the Bush Administration is comprised of war criminals who deserve to be tried as international war criminals. This is Bush's legacy.
His majority congress was also the worst EVER - the partisanship was sick! they tried to hide from democrats on committees and pass legislation in secret! If you think this is also not part of Bush's legacy, you're stupid and do not understand what part of the Republican Party Bush empowered. But this faction, the "talibornagains," are who have brought this nation to shame. And Bush is and was their leader.
Bush deserves NOTHING but our scorn - and a day in court defending his trashing of the constitution and his embrace of third-world dictator policies. He will be remembered in history for his horrific influence. - OwlCreek, on 11/05/2008, -112/+158The vicious attacks on Bush from all sides revealed far more about us as a society than they did about the president. It's gotten so bad that we, especially the young, have no idea how vicious and impolite we have become. Obama's conciliatory remarks are virtually identical to Bush's eight years ago and they will ultimately be just as effective.
- inactive, on 11/06/2008, -9/+48that's exactly what it should have said. the man deserves zero respect, and he has earned far more bile than has been shown him.
- johnlabmonkey, on 11/05/2008, -46/+85He "stood by" his rich friends and cronies, and sold the rest of use down the river.
- 1town, on 11/06/2008, -10/+48"What must our enemies be thinking?"
I stopped reading there.
***** the enemies, how bout Americas allies, who Bush gave a middle finger to in his first term? - mrsammercer, on 11/06/2008, -10/+47What the ***** are you talking about? Who is digging up all these *****, brainwashed comments? We have to be loyal to Bush to show the world we support our president, no matter what kind of job he is doing? What the ***** is this, North Korea?
- inactive, on 11/05/2008, -4/+40Courtesy is freely given; respect must be earned.
- bobhiggins, on 11/05/2008, -45/+78Bush Defended from Malodorous Tribute in WSJ
In fact, George Bush's approval ratings far overestimate the man. The fact that he will probably retire to some gated brush pile of a "ranch" to live out his days as an extremely wealthy, carefully protected, moderately amusing if slightly goofy statesman of the harebrained right, and not in the prison cell he has earned for his wretched performance, is testimony to the incredible forbearance of the public he so mistreated. http://worldwide-sawdust.com/showDiary.do?diaryId= ... - kaelyiesta, on 11/05/2008, -23/+56This is so absurd. Since when has it even been an issue to show a president respect? Maybe the opEd author Jeffrey Scott Shapiro is confusing this country for Stalin era Russia or Mao era China.
Hey Jeff, even though I know you wont ever see this: go ***** yourself. Respect is earned, and I'll be damned if I ever show such an evil creature anything but contempt. Dissent is a wonderful tool to keep a government in line, if you want a nation that has a portrait of the leader in every house and patriotic songs about him then go to north korea. - inactive, on 11/05/2008, -14/+47We are better than that.
- inactive, on 11/05/2008, -18/+50No, it's the SPENDING of Bush that has been the disgrace...
- dizprozium, on 11/05/2008, -25/+56If this article were a youtube video, it would be read by Chris Crocker.
"Leave George Bush alone!" - shupy, on 11/06/2008, -19/+50Are you nuts?
You think Bush got a lousy hand?
He took office with a budget surplus. He came from a background of wealth and influence. The man has a silver foot in his mouth, he will retire comfortably and never need to lift a hand to work.
He is an arrogant unqualified son of a political dynasty. If he had to make it on his own, he'd be running a gas station in Crawford.
Nothing is more pathetic than the tendency of his followers to blame everything on Democrats. The man had total control for six years. A complete rubberstand congress, and can you name a single decent thing he did for the average American.
Give me a break. Prince Bush was the least capable or qualified member of the Bush family. He represents the worst of the American Aristocracy. He has lived a privileged life. You need to learn what critically thinking is. - purzzzell, on 11/06/2008, -4/+34read the whole article - just want to point out a few instances in which he "stood by us"
Picking and choosing intelligence regarding WMD's in Iraq so that we'd go in, seemingly forgetting about Osama Bin Laden, who's head we still want to see.
Creating for-profit armies (blackwater) that seem to be under no one's jurisdiction whatsoever.
No-bid contracts for Haliburton, who Cheney still has stock in.
Starting a war and at the same time pushing a tax cut (WTF???)
Are these the instances in which he "stood by us" - sorry, with a friend like this - who needs enemies. - swrostmore, on 11/05/2008, -48/+78I agree with the WSJ, the failure to hold Bush accountable for the copious crimes committed under his watch is truly a disgrace.
- bipolarruledout, on 11/06/2008, -10/+39"The vicious attacks on Bush from all sides revealed far more about us as a society than they did about the president."
Your either delusional or have absolutely no grasp of current events. If this administration intends to be treated well then perhaps they should have shown such consideration themselves during the past two terms rather than attacking anyone or anything associated with the truth, logic, or reason. - Drahkar, on 11/06/2008, -9/+38The author of this article obviously has lost sight of the atrocities that George W Bush is guilty of during his time as president not to mention the wide-spread decimation of personal liberty and freedom in the US as a whole.
'Yet it should seem obvious that many of our country's current problems either existed long before Mr. Bush ever came to office'
The Economy was at an all time high and the National Debt was being paid off Prior to Bush taking power. Not to mention most of the problems that Bush is currently hated for have absolutely nothing to do with issues passed off from the previous administration. Tax cuts for sending jobs overseas, violations of the Geneva Convention, Warrant-less Wiretapping that violated our 4th Amendment. The list goes on. These were all items that came into practice by Bush.
It seems to me that someone has been paid off to try and make people not want to follow up and push the legal proceedings against Bush once he leaves office like they should have been done while he was still in office. - tripplesea, on 11/05/2008, -32/+60"...'I will need your support, and I will work to earn it. I will do all I can do to deserve your trust.'" He did need our support, but he did not work to earn it. He needed our trust, but he never earned it. He spent eight years in the White House deceiving Americans and putting our soldiers in harms way unnecessarily. It is an indisputable fact that loyalty to our country and loyalty to our president are two very separate things. America's "impolite" and "slanderous" treatment of George W. Bush has been so prolific because it is all that we as citizens can do! If we could succeed in Impeaching him, if we could try him for his war crimes, if we could see him punished for his actions - then, and only then, will the world see just what kind of resolve we Americans really have.
"Dissent is the highest form of patriotism." ~ H. Zinn - hipnerd, on 11/06/2008, -13/+41The "Ws taken off the keyboards" story was a lie. Never happened. The Bush Administration knew it was a lie and let it dangle out there to make Clinton look bad. Someone was being childish, but it wasn't the Democrats.
And perhaps if Obama starts an unnecessary preemptive war that kills thousands of American soldiers and tens of thousands of innocent civilians you might find a "Worst President Ever" sticker. Or if he open up torture camps on foreign soil to avoid Constitutional oversight you might find a "War Criminal" sticker for him. Bush didn't start out with such items for sale. He earned them through incompetence and malice.
Oh, and he ***** the economy over, too.. - freediverx, on 11/06/2008, -2/+27Loyalty? How loyal were you to Clinton during the sex scandal?
- Ransack, on 11/06/2008, -13/+37Bush is a war criminal. That's not a minor "goof".
- inactive, on 11/05/2008, -43/+67Excuse me? Bush has been the most disgraceful President this country has ever seen, or will see for a long time. The man deserves to be tried on so many different counts of treason and war crimes it would require a book to publish them all.
Good riddance, and may he live the rest of his life out in misery and shame. - niczar, on 11/05/2008, -6/+30Conservatives are all about respect. Just look back at how they treated Clinton. Plain ole' southern respect.
- cheviot, on 11/05/2008, -6/+30Name one? I'll name several.
He told us that there were WMDs in Iraq and that the war was necessary to remove them from our enemies hands. This was a lie.
He told us he'd take care of the Taliban in Afghanistan. Instead he sent the troops needed to do that to Iraq.
He told us he'd forge a bipartisan coalition and reunite the country. Sure, he'd do that, as long as the Democrats didn't mind following whatever policy George thought best. Meeting the other party half way? George doesn't play that. He does whatever he damn well pleases.
He told us he would investigate who leaked Valerie Plame's name to the press and fire them. At least that's what he said right up until he found out the trail lead right to the west wing. Then the we find out that the so called investigation never took place.
Do you need more? That's just off the top of my head. I'd do some research and add more, but I really don't have time to type about all of George's lies. They would fill multiple books... - protodon, on 11/06/2008, -9/+33blah blah blah some people still refuse to admit that he is and always will be a terrible president.
- staffa, on 11/06/2008, -6/+29Bush has been a disturbingly bad president who turned and richly deserves much of the criticism thrown his way. And despite, or perhaps because, of his words, he was completely ineffective in forming a consensus across the aisle. He is the decider wearing rose colored glasses in a glass house throwing stones at every passing person.
And I am proud, damn proud, that as a country, we have the freedom to call him out for what we think he is. It is about the only redeeming factor of the last 8 years, in my eyes and the eyes of most of the world.
Also, your incredible naive to think that today's attacks are any more vicious and impolite then many others throughout history. Most disputes between the rulers and the ruled tend to end in a lot of bloodshed. Even in this country, the attacks have been for more vicious in the past, look at the race between Jefferson and Adams and they were even close friends prior to the election. - crapuccino, on 11/05/2008, -38/+59If you ask me, he's been damned lucky.
Investigate.
Impeach.
Imprision. - DiggasWAttitude, on 11/06/2008, -5/+25This is not the news media, as you call it, now praising a goon man. Its the Murdoch owned WSJ. Complete and utter *****:
FTA:
"his refusal to retreat in Iraq has enraged liberals who have unrealistic expectations about the challenges we face there."
LIBERALS are unrealistic? ORLY? Here's a quote for you:
"Oh, no, we're not going to have any casualties." —President Bush, discussing the Iraq war with Christian broadcaster Pat Robertson, after Robertson told him he should prepare the American people for casualties. -
