WARNING: Bill O'Reilly wants to father your kid watch!
youtube.com — O'Reilly thinks he can teach our children proper behavior, and we can't think of a worse father figure than an angry, hate-filled shock jock notorious for telling guests to "Shut up!" We wondered what would happen if kids read O'Reilly's book and then saw the real O'Reilly for themselves.

- pmagoo, on 08/07/2008, -9/+35It amazes me that personalities like Bill O'Reilly are permitted to befoul our airwaves. If he were employed by any reputable organization in the business world, he would almost certainly find his career cut short as the result of his loud, boorish, and crude behavior. No professional organization would tolerate that, nor could he have survived the sexual harassment charges he selttled, the racist comments he is well known for, or his intolerance of others.
Do you suppose he survives because he married the boss's daughter?...that's the only way he be permitted to stay around in the "real" world.- doctorfungi, on 08/08/2008, -4/+3Like Bill or not, he pulls in ratings. In the business world, that is exactly what his boss would be looking for.

- willfe, on 08/08/2008, -1/+1*Anyone* can befoul our airwaves -- that's the spiffy part of the First Amendment. The sucky part is morons like O'Reilly make use of this. The most effective way to combat someone like O'Reilly is to use *your* voice, not just on Digg, but anywhere you can where you think it'll help. This means having the balls to engage in an argument with someone who brings him up and seems to support him. It means writing rebuttals to his outrageous statements and publishing them. It also means writing to the show's producers to complain about his stupid rants, to the show's sponsors to complain about them supporting such an insane windbag, and to your friends and family to discourage them from supporting him or watching his shows.
He is a grade A peddler of fear, hatred, doubt, and uncertainty -- the single best antidote for that is education. Folks don't always *want* education, but it's fun to try :)

- beautifulleper, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1If you have no ethical sense of the greater good then he would get credit.
You are quite smug! I agree that there is a lot of really dumb people on the planet. That also means that those of us who are smarter have a responsibility to relay information to the public as free from bias as possible. Otherwise very dangerous sociological consequences can plague the populous. And unfortunately in my opinion it is that very smugness that can cause smart people such as yourself harm.- Murdats, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1you can relay all you want, doesn't help if no one listens.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cassandra - beautifulleper, on 08/08/2008, -0/+0It is not a matter of listening. If the words are read at all, the brain absorbs them. And then through its complex neural networks increases the potential of idea's eventually clicking. I think if you are a reasonably intelligent person that being smug reduces this long term subtle effect. This is why freedom of speech is so important and why I love the digg community even with all its imperfections.
It is a opportunity for us more aware to try to get people to think. Since the brain has been proved to be elastic in recent years it is possible with perseverance and a sense of responsibility for your own psychological health and then the health of your greater society that people can make a big difference having open discourse.
The subconscious brain absorbs even that which it rejects. I know this to be true, cause some of my best friends have angered me with their ideas and maybe hours, days and sometimes even years I will realize part of what they were saying is true.
I think the best time to be hopeful is when there is no hope left. And I do not mean the abstract type of hope. But a active hope cemented in conscious action. Maybe I am too much of an idealist.
I haven't always been this way. I have been very smug for the last 4 years. Then I started to realize it was making my life harder. That to wish for something better in myself and to try to reach for it has gave my life more color.
I decided either try to reach for something better or live life as if I were the walking dead. I often times feel like a crazy person, but when I look around me, I feel like a lot of people are crazy, but they don't even know how they are crazy. I think I am quite aware of where I make errors. So I think it is important for me to try to help other people realize they make errors in judgment.
I can only do this through a calm perseverance.
- Murdats, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1you can relay all you want, doesn't help if no one listens.

It is disheartening to know that so many Americans fall for this obvious Republican rhetorical machine-Fox News & Co.
It is more proof of America's diabolical Pathology.- Zarchon, on 08/08/2008, -3/+2Oh give me a break. Republican rhetoric? Let me tell you my experience when it comes to politics. MOST liberals I know, not all, simply repeat that which they have heard elsewhere. If you ask them any questions in depth they totally don't have a clue. I was a Democrat right up until I was spouting my stuff and some OLDER gentleman asked me WHY I said what I said. I honestly couldn't back up what I was talking about so I looked into it. After that I became a Republican. I did it on my own, I wasn't brainwashed. I still see the left as being hate filled, lying hypocrites. NOTHING here on Digg has done anything to change that point of view. Why do I come here? Because I like to read the oppositions point of view. I don't go to a blog to read people repeating the things I say or reinforcing the point of view I came to on my own.
- jaxcs, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1The choice of Democrat or Republican is really the expression of world views. The ability of non professionals to articulate ideas really should be of no importance to you. You don't compete ideas with the weakest members but the strongest. If you think most liberal dems don't know what they are talking about, be assured that there are plenty of conservative reps who simply parrot ideas as well. It sounds to me that someone older who you respected changed your value system when you were still trying to form ideas about the world.
- Pittance, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1I used to think the same as Zarchon, that democrats were lying, hate filled pigs. But that was due to being forced to listen to talk radio (hannity, limbaugh, savage, etc) for 4 years to and from school every day. Its hard not to absorb that kind of stuff.
But now I know most politicians are completely full of ***** and both sides suck. You just got to pick who sucks less.

- Kohaxx, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1The funny part is Stephen Colbert said in an interview that he doesn't think his satirical character would ever make a good father figure because he's close-minded and abrasive. The best part is his character being modeled after Bill O and thus all the same applies 100 times more to Bill O's lack of ability to ever be a good father figure.
- alchemistoxford, on 08/07/2008, -6/+14By his own definition -- Bill O'Reilly is a bully and a coward. That so many Americans watch O'Reilly is a travesty. Focusing all your energy against HIM, though he is despicable, is a waste of time. The cause for our Big Media problems is that they're Big. Break up the conglomerates. Demand access of all points of view to the media. End the idea of "mainstream."
When first radio and then TV began, there was some point to corporations taking a larger role than in the past: radio and TV were enormously expensive. But more and more, that's not true anymore. So a thirty or forty-person News operation operating with an RSS feed and a podcast is the same -- actually better -- than some dude working for Rupert Murdoch if he's a right-winger or for Disney or Time-Warner or General Electric if they're only moderately right-wing. If you actually want to know something, go ask news people, rather than some hairdo personality whore. - ErickStevenson, on 08/08/2008, -6/+0You know the best way to deal with people like ORielly is just kill them... no I'm kidding.... not really... but anyway ignore them and move on, you can't reason with these people, they just end up frastrating you. - stealthc, on 08/08/2008, -5/+4BillO is a bully, yes, but his comments about Sylvia's Restaurant were actually not racist at all. He was saying that even though this was a restaurant in the middle of Harlem run predominantly by black people, it did not fit the stereotypes one might have of a "black restaurant." And it didn't sound like he was complaining about that fact.
- an0nymous, on 08/08/2008, -3/+2Hmm. I must disagree:
"I couldn't get over the fact that there was no difference between Sylvia's restaurant and any other restaurant in New York City. I mean, it was exactly the same, even though it's run by blacks, primarily black patronship." Later, he added: "There wasn't one person in Sylvia's who was screaming, 'M-Fer, I want more iced tea."
The racist bit was that Bill apparently has a very low opinion of black people. He just can't. get. over. that they don't act all crazy and you know *black* screaming for their ice tea, M-Fer, while eating in nice restaurants.
The experience didn't fit HIS stereotypes.- stealthc, on 08/09/2008, -1/+1Semantics. He's a tactless douchebag who observed that a "black" restaurant defied stereotypes. There's plenty else to crucify him for without picking that particular nit.

- wayzup, on 08/08/2008, -3/+3Bill O'Reilly and those like him are best left completely ignored.
- banderwocky, on 08/08/2008, -3/+3HAHAHAH! Bill self pwnd. Fool.
- Pramma, on 08/08/2008, -2/+1How again did this guy dodge registering as a sex offender?
- akchrs, on 08/08/2008, -2/+4Isn't it funny that Bill O'Reilly has double, sometimes tripple, the viewers as Keith Olbermann? Just saying.
- Cyberdactyl, on 08/09/2008, -1/+2O'Reilly is passionate but honest. Olbermann is dishonest and passionate.
Most people want honesty, that's why his ratings are 3 times that of MSNBC.
The most humorous aspect of the ratings battle is MSNBC picks out an extremely narrow demographic spectrum that slightly surpasses FOX and says "All we want is the 18-26 year old viewers." That had me rolling.- ZenMojo, on 08/12/2008, -0/+1Dishonest? At least he cites his sources instead of just running off at the mouth.
- ZenMojo, on 08/12/2008, -0/+1Double the viewers? Triple? Not quite.
And if numbers = quality, then Return of the Jedi (adjusted for inflation) is a better movie than the Godfather.
- Cyberdactyl, on 08/09/2008, -1/+2O'Reilly is passionate but honest. Olbermann is dishonest and passionate.
