- emailowndme, on 05/13/2009, -33/+114Ummm... *****.
Kid's don't have sex because Hollywood tells them to. They have sex because they have been biologically programmed to want to have sex. Look at any other organism on the planet, they don't need any sexual education, in so far as the process of having sex. - dcodrea, on 05/13/2009, -15/+73I read a story--probably just a joke--of UN agenda-spreaders showing tribal villagers how to apply condoms onto broom handles. They returned a year later and births were still happening--and the natives had dutifully put condoms on their brooms.
- inactive, on 05/14/2009, -7/+50SO is this asshat telling me that before their was Hollywood.. teenagers and people in general weren't ***** like rabbits all through human history.. what a ***** joke.
- bettverboten, on 05/13/2009, -40/+82FTA: If you were an alien dropped on to planet Earth however, forced to deduce the sexuality of the human species solely from what Hollywood pumps out, you’d probably think that nobody made it past 16 without having schtupped a myriad of partners.
One would have to wonder how much different that statistic would be if Hollywood WEREN’T pressuring teenagers to engage in the horizontal mambo. If Hollywood put all of its “virginity is for suckers” energy into promoting “saving sex till marriage,” I bet we’d see a very different, much more lopsided statistic. Of course Hollywood could never do that, as they don’t believe in “forcing ones beliefs on others”… Unless of course said beliefs include situational ethics, then it’s time to preach it father, preach it!
Women, correct me if I’m wrong, but there doesn’t even seem to be that “dime store floozy” stigma attached to being the “town pump” anymore. Girls who choose to save themselves are often portrayed as the “ugly-pretty shy girl” who only comes into womanhood once she gives it away. Do you feel more femininely empowered now that sex is expected of you at an early age?
So just to get things straight… Upholding traditional values when it comes to sex and marriage = judgemental and unrealistic. Making fun of the quirky abnormality that is a young-teen virgin = that’s just good TV.
With the soaring STD/STI rates, one would have to wonder if going back to the “unrealistic views of teenage sex” might not be so bad after all. The painful truth is that in its attempt to remain “morally neutral,” Hollywood is causing us to raise a nation of cads and harlots… Thanks again Sean Penn! - JMitchell242, on 05/13/2009, -4/+46What is this "Hollywood does this and that" business? It isn't a singular entity. It's a bunch of indiviuals collaborating on profects they find some sort of personal passion around. Gays and blacks had to learn that if they wanted good movies that focused on their lives and issues, THEY HAD TO MAKE THEM THEMSELVES. Now that they have done so, those lives and issues have become part of the mainstream conversation in other movies. I don't have any problem with movies containing an abstinence message, but I do have a problem with people shaking their fist at something and not gettng off their asses and doing something about it.
- SaladCactusKing, on 05/14/2009, -11/+43Bitter Virgins in this thread.
- seansich, on 05/14/2009, -5/+36As Bill Maher put it succinctly, "Hollywood isn't your cesspool, it's your mirror." Did you ever wonder where the greatest concentration of those people who watch Sex in the City and read Playboy. . . . .?

Red states. . . . . .that's right wing-nuts. . . . . .red states
Being prepared to be buried by the wing-nuts in 3..........2........1...... - mollydog12, on 05/13/2009, -23/+54before my daughter was in middle school she had been taught, in the classroom, how to arm a banana with a condom. she had already been presented feature length films that could have just as easily been shown in a times square peep show. health education.
she tells me she doesn't want to have sex till college. just doesn't think she'll be ready till then. so despite everything around her she appears to be wiser than i ever was at her age. maybe she just tells me what i want to hear.
forgive me. just musing here. what is the adult need to have them grow up so young ? - Suricou, on 05/14/2009, -3/+33If I prick you, do you not bleed?
Though other animals would be less likely to subsequently sue me.
You can fight the animal instincts. You can disagree with them. You can resist them. But, as hard as you might try to deny them, they are still there... always influencing your actions. - Coven, on 05/13/2009, -7/+35Honest question here. How many of those that have posted above were virgins at their wedding?
- dlan4327, on 05/14/2009, -6/+33"Get your sex on Kids!"
No luck so far. I'll keep trying but I'm not optimistic. - emailowndme, on 05/13/2009, -9/+35Hmm...Do some research on any animals in the animal kingdom, first example I can think of off hand is Hyena's who if they have more than 1 pup, they will allow all but the first female to starve. Also, if there is more than 1 female pregnant in the pack, the more dominant female will kill the less dominant females pup.
- trevah, on 05/14/2009, -9/+35This is dumb.
Sex is in Hollywood because who the ***** wants to watch a movie about abstinence? Sex and it's associated emotional and dramatic hangers-on are much more exciting and thus sell better. - Landthatilove, on 05/13/2009, -44/+69"Come out Virginia. Don't make me wait. Catholic girls start much to late. Ah but sooner or later it comes down to fate, I might as well be the one. You know that only the good die young"
Having moral character has been under attack for a very long time. I remember when I was a child the shows on tv wouldn't dare show a man and woman in bed together. Now they show them simulating bumpin' uglies on daytime soaps. The times, they are a changin'. Contrary to popular belief, all changes are not good. - inactive, on 05/13/2009, -34/+58FTA:

This Steven kid is great, what a bright young man. The problem with society right now that is mentioned in the article, is that the sitgma associated with sexual promiscuity has been taken away. In its place is a message in which, sex is deemed natural even for kids as young as 14 or 15, not acting on it is statistically impossible, and to drive home the message results from abstinence studies are inaccurately presented. I don't think it's realistic to expect all kids not to have sex, but what is realistic is the fact that times were better when we set abstaining as the gold standard and admonished sexual promiscuity as a society...
There is a growing trend that we don't hear much about. It's called straightedge (yes it started out as an alternative punk lifestyle, one that emphasized purity) but it has grown into so much more. Young kids who are straightedge, abstain from sex, alcohol, and drugs. Technically I am straightedge, but I don't call myself straightedge b/c of the counter-culture connotation it has, and I am about as square as the come : )... Even though you may not see this trend played out in movies or even talked about on digg or elsewhere on the net, there are good kids out there, kids that know the value of restraint, and the value of cherishing your body enough to want to share it with only one person.

- Coven, on 05/13/2009, -7/+30Here, I'll be your first respondent.
Hollywood pressures people into neither sex nor violence. - mollydog12, on 05/13/2009, -3/+26funny !
- sencity, on 05/14/2009, -6/+28So what if two people did wait until marriage and found out afterwords that they were sexually incompatible?
I'm not advocating that young people (or any persons) should be hooking up with anyone and everyone, but if a couple waits until marriage and the sex is bad, then I doubt that marriage is going to last. If two people are in legit relationship, and take the necessary precautions for safe sex whats wrong with that? - vvvladut, on 05/14/2009, -3/+24I was a virgin when I got a divorce.
- Suricou, on 05/14/2009, -2/+21Rabbits. Spointanious abortion if food supplies are short.
Gannets. They lay two eggs. The first-hatched chick always kills the second, either by pushing the egg away or pushing the live chick out to roast to death in the sun.
Nature is brutal. - 22catches, on 05/14/2009, -5/+24"Hollywood is causing us to raise a nation of cads and harlots"
Wow, this is such judgmental *****. If you choose to have sex, or choose to wait, that's your prerogative. Be aware of the consequences, know how to be safe, and do what feels right for you. - bluto36, on 05/13/2009, -4/+22got jumped by some straight edgers coming out of a bar back when i was stationed in San Diego. apparently these ones were against counting as they were outnumbered. they did not however abstain from getting a beating. but outside of that i agree with you.
- zakuropan, on 05/14/2009, -12/+30But virginity IS for suckers...
- LacY, on 05/14/2009, -6/+24That's such a bad idea... A) you want your wedding night to be beautiful, not painful and awkward and B) you really need to know if you're compatible in that way.
I'm all for waiting, but I say if you love each other enough to be seriously thinking about marriage (get engaged, etc), then there's no reason you can't take each other out for a test drive... :) - Suricou, on 05/14/2009, -8/+25The sexual instincts kick in around puberty. Starting comprehensive sex ed at that time is just acknowleding this inconvenient fact. A significant number are going to have sex quite young - deal with it, don't deny it.
- plecostomus, on 05/14/2009, -5/+22This guy wants the "dime store floozy" stereotype back, because it keeps girls from having sex? Well listen up genius, it also prevents women from having healthy sex lives, makes them feel guilty about having sex even with their long-term partner post-marriage, and uses shame to promote abstinence. You're a real ***** hero for wanting that back at the forefront.
Why don't we just call YOU a dime story floozy and devalue your existence over whether or not you're a virgin, Mr. Crowder? You can experience how women's sexuality is treated personally, while us actual women escape unscathed by your idiocy. - TheNik, on 05/14/2009, -8/+24Moral character according to whom? And concerning what?
The same people that had a negative opinion about sexuality had a positive opinion about segregation and the passive roll of women in our society. Slowly but surely, the people in this country are starting to base their morals and values on logic and human nature rather than petty religious beliefs. Eventually we'll have a society with laws and standards that conform with more realistically beneficial standards rather than the standards to protect people from a nonexistent judgment.
Those changes - my friend - will be good. Very good. - inactive, on 05/13/2009, -7/+23What do you think a menstrual cycle is?
Now, see why you should put more than a half second of thought into something before saying it? - Breyker4711, on 05/14/2009, -4/+20What is with the Sean Penn line? I understand he was in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, and while that does have two teenagers having sex as a central part of the plot. It was mostly done to see the downside of early sexual escapades.
Okay beyond that if your feel Hollywood has a collective message, you are being dumb. Hollywood is a term for a loose connection of studios producing pieces of entertainment that will be the best bet for a return on their investment during production. There is no cabal trying to increase teenage pregnancy, but there is a group of businessmen who realize the average person enjoys looking at other people who are very attractive. So to help ensure the success of their product they attempt to use the sexuality of these attractive people to help return their investment.
Simply put if you don't like it, don't support it by watching it. As a parent don't let your children watch it either. It is real simple if the audience for their product goes away, the product will go away.
Lastly, claiming that their are more virgins in the 16 and up crowd for teenagers is probably a tad unrealistic. Just look at the STD rate in teenage girls. Nationally we are at about a rate of 1 in 4 teenage girls have or had an STD. If you apply a little bit of logical thought to this you can figure out a few things:
1) Now look at the odds of catching an STD, if you use a condom your odds become strikingly low(1 in 10000 in most cases). Now lets say, for arguments sake, the teenage population is at a far greater likelihood of catching an STD. I really doubt it is at the 1 in 20 shot, but lets say that is the case. When you apply the amount of girls that have/had an STD, against the likelihood of catching one, you realize that at least half of all teenage girls sexually active.
2) The girls aren't doing it alone. Well I guess they could be, but realistically if a teenage girl is sexually active, she is being active with a boy roughly her same age.
3) This activity has been on the rise during the reign of abstinence only education. At this point you have to realize that just promoting abstinence isn't working. Even if less kids are having sex, the STD rate is sky rocketing (not to mention teen pregnancy rates).
As a last note we should praise those who wait on sex, but realistically when you look at indicators on actual sexual activity (not blind surveys, that you try to rip apart with no true reasoning to fit your argument), those who do wait for sex are in a very small minority. Which isn't Hollywood's fault, at worst they are just producing a product people want. - osko2052, on 05/14/2009, -11/+26You are obviously not a parent. Let's hope your 12 year old daughter doesn't get knocked up someday.
- inactive, on 05/13/2009, -12/+27I will be, if I get married.
- JMitchell242, on 05/13/2009, -2/+16emailowndme made a good point and mos def refuted shaun. And Missy, I so don't need to have that mental image in my mind :) BTW, have you checked how we are getting dug down in the Chris Pine thread?
- QiJiGuang, on 05/13/2009, -5/+19OMG LOL!
- cybershoplifter, on 05/14/2009, -8/+22I don't think Hollywood has much to do with life decisions.
- anstice85, on 05/14/2009, -19/+32Abstinence only education doesn't work, 'nuff said. The best you can do is make sure young people are informed and aware of all the possible consequences.
- inactive, on 05/14/2009, -5/+18This is one of the stupidest pieces of ***** articles I have read in a long time. Just take a look at any two-year old boy or girl who suddenly learns if they touch "down there" it feels good. Take that into puberty and raging hormones and now multiply that good feeling by a million. Increase it five-fold when they have their first nocturnal emission. Multiply to the nth degree when they fall in love for the first time.
Hollywood does not hold such power over its audience. Kids will do what comes naturally -- no pun intended. The reason Hollywood produces those stories is not to influence kids, but because kids influence the movies. It's what they are interested in and what they can relate to so that is what Hollywood is showing them. It's actually the other way around than what the writer supposes. - heythere1857, on 05/13/2009, -8/+21Good for you. (I mean that, I'm not being sarcastic lol)
=) - cfuse, on 05/14/2009, -3/+16Answer: heaps. Infanticide is very common in animals.
People love to think they are some special order above animals - but it's just not true. We're primates, and we act exactly the same way primates do when it comes down to it. A chimp mightn't be able to perform an abortion, but it can easily abandon it's baby - or beat it to death. It happens all the time.
Bristol Palin is proof positive that the sex act can be completed in *spite* of 'education' to the contrary. It would have been drummed into her not to be a loose harlot since before she could walk - but biological imperatives win out (she'd only need to look at her own mother to see that). Nobody taught Bristol to get on all fours and grunt like a sow - it's in her genes, it's in *everyone's genes*. The real tragedy is that nobody taught her that there is nothing wrong with sex - you just need to know how not to get diseased or pregnant. - induren, on 05/14/2009, -12/+25This op-ed misses the mark by far. Hollywood always portrays ludicrous idiocy. We gawk. That's how it goes. Look at Bollywood in India. The women in those films dress in a way that would get them denounced and assaulted in many areas in the same country.
Let's just state the obvious: this guy gets no play whatsoever, and is angry about it. - imzesuit, on 05/14/2009, -3/+16Humans are animals with enhanced intelligence. However, we are still animals, with instincts. Humans are no better than other animals, just more intelligent. Humans hold no special status in the animal kingdom; no animal does.
- TsuruchiBrian, on 05/14/2009, -9/+21Unlike drugs and alcohol, sex is not actually bad for you.
Like driving a car, sex can be perfectly safe and fulfilling. All you guys that try to imply that people who have sex with different people are NOT cherishing their bodies or that "good kids" are the ones that don't have sex is only your ***** puritanical opinion.
Marriage is just a social construct that is completely meaningless by itself. Some people like to attribute adjectives like "purity" and "innocence" to abstaining from sex until marriage. You may as well abstain from eating pizza until you get married, and criticize anyone who whores out their body by indulging in pizza before marriage. This is just absurd.
All you virgins out there are throwing your life away. You only live once, enjoy it. No one is going to send you to hell for having sex before marriage, I promise.
Just wear a condom. It's that easy. - punx, on 05/14/2009, -7/+19Insightful, you know, I suspect molly is a pretty nice person, and would refrain from telling you what a tasteless little turd you are. Luckily, I'm not that nice. You're such an *****, I will guarantee you're a virgin, and will remain that way well into your 40s. Then someone might take pity on you. But I doubt it.
- ripple123, on 05/14/2009, -11/+23what a ***** idiot. all these abstinence morons completely gloss over the primal urge to get laid, and somehow think that tv and movies are making teens want to have sex. get real. hollywoods not the one with the agenda. these fundie no-sex-till-your-married-just-like-the-bible-says types are the ones with the agenda. trying to fit reality to their puritanical fantasies. hollywoods just making what people will watch.
- inactive, on 05/14/2009, -15/+27lol no. It doesn't work because humans are programmed to reproduce. teenage pregnancy went up for the first time in 20 years because of abstinence only education.
- Zippo, on 05/14/2009, -5/+17Nothing wrong with safe sex... Better than teaching your teenage kids that sex is dirty, immoral, or anything but natural.
- Azerael, on 05/14/2009, -31/+43I'm surprised you have the internet there in the 16th century.
- rkthoadan, on 05/14/2009, -3/+14After a cursory googling it appears that Uganda is actually using an ABC program (Abstain, Be Faithful, Use a condom), not an abstinence only program.
No digg for you! - earthforce1, on 05/14/2009, -1/+12Honeybees - the first queen to hatch will kill the other developing queens, or if two hatch it becomes a fight to the death.
- anstice85, on 05/14/2009, -10/+21Yes, if the media said the opposite then teenagers would no longer have sex drives.
