- sphil14, on 10/12/2007, -4/+46Snap!! And from a Republican Senator to boot.
- quomen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26Did anyone find themselves clapping at the end of the video?
- trevorml0878, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26Let's not forget the real crime here. Alberto Gonzales thinks the constitution does not guarantee the writ of habeas corpus. This man is nothing but a traitor to this nation. http://youtube.com/watch?v=ZY5BwMjpUOI
- seanherman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+28I think this is one of the best arguments made thus far, and it's refreshing to hear it from the republicans. Gonzales's main line of defense seems to be that he acknowledges his managerial incompetence, and that these firings weren't controlled, or properly handled. He can't identify exactly who made the decisions to fire those who were chosen, or what those specific reasons were, despite his clear responsibility to do so. Such firings and appointments could potentially carry great influence, and should be tightly controlled by the AG. This casts great doubt on his leadership ability and decision making, and seems justification enough to call for his resignation. Such administrative negligence, as the Senator mentions, should carry repercussions. Even if the reassignments weren't politically motivated, intended to thwart corruption investigations (and that remains to be seen), this is grounds enough for the Attorney General to be replaced.
I think it's clear at least that these investigations aren't unjustified. The Attorney General himself has acknowledged gross incompetence, arguing he should stay in office because he's now best suited to prevent this from happening again. I think many would argue, on the other hand, his inability to appropriately and competently handle this situation simply casts doubt on his ability to handle future complicated and potentially politically precarious situations. - lunasunshine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25That was brilliant and concise.
/standing ovation - canadianguy33, on 10/12/2007, -8/+25So a senator speaks the truth and he gets credit because he's a republican? I thought he was just doing his job.
- Osjpr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Gonzalez doesn't have the decency to resign. He has no self-respect. "Lets forget all about this and pretend it never happened. I know what went wrong, trust me on covering it up better next time."
- wendelgee2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Yeah, Coburn is a real compassionate conservative:
“I favor the death penalty for abortionists and other people who take life.”
“The gay community has infiltrated the very centers of power in every area across this country, and they wield extreme power … Why do you think we see the rationalization for abortion and multiple sexual partners? That’s a gay agenda.” - nickrct, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10@craigb12
Youre right about Coburn. I've been a lifelong Dem and I can say without reservation I would vote for Tom Coburn over 90% of current Dems. He is to Dems, what Joe Lieberman is to Republicans. Here's a great article on Coburn.

Thats not true at all, you're generalizing, and you shouldnt be. Tom Coburn is one of the few decent republicans left, he wrote the tax transparency bill with Barack Obama last year and he's got some other great ideas. He's a guy that is going to stand up for what he thinks is right, and he's not a political or religious lunatic... there are some republicans that aren't complete scum. - lunasunshine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8 FTV Gonzales:
"There is no expressed grant of habeas in the constitution. There's a prohibition from taking it away... The constitution doesn't say every individual in the United States or every citizen is hereby granted or assured the right to habeas, it doesn't say that. It simply says, the right of habeas corpus should not be suspended except by.. [cut off - he was referring to the cases of rebellion or treason]."
What a scumbag. We can all see through that. I was waiting for him to burst out laughing at the utter stupidity of his words. - thruandthru, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Coburn really stepped up to the plate on that one. His argument/opinion was really well played. Good for him to go right out and say that to his face.
- simondotcalvin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I live in Coburn's district, too. I didn't vote for him. The man puts the paleo in paleoconservative. That said, he's earned a little respect with his push for ethical legislation and, yes, his balls.
Also, three Oklahoma stories on the front page in the last day or so? These really must be the end of times. (Of course the first two, ORU admin saying the Cho Seung-Hui was possessed by the devil and making watermelon the state vegetable, were more than a little embarrassing.... Oklahoma FTW!) - Nodaki, on 10/12/2007, -7/+14All Republicans whether they like it or noat are tied to the Bush administration due to party affiliation . Party loyalty amongst the Republican Caucus and the Republican voters is failing. Right now is a critical time to analyze how your senator/congressman act in the face of widespread corruption in the Executive branch. If they are not willing to stand up and fight for the principles of the party and continue to side/vote with the Bush administration they have in fact failed to uphold the Constitution and should be removed from office.
One good thing the Bush administration has done is fractured the way Republicans think. My parents are staunch Republicans, fund raisers, lobbyists, party loyalists but their faith in the party is failing due to President ***** for Brains. - jdavid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I have meet with Tom, he is a stand up guy that is the only politician that I know that is a person and a Dr. of medicine first, and a representative of working people in the Senate. I may vote for Barrack, but I would like the chance to choose between two real candidates, like Tom, and Barrack; who could actually LEAD this country.
- lunasunshine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6In this day and age, as a definite liberal, I will absolutely be voting for the candidate, not the party, next year. Political parties don't mean anything when you don't follow the values you say you are part of, much like religious people who spew hate in the name of god.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6i dont feel an ounce of sorrow for that sad sack. he trashed Habeas Corpus! we should bring back the Guilotine just for his stupid ass
- EntropyMan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Yeah. Contrary to what some on Digg have claimed, even Gonzales admitted that if the President had fired USAs for political purposes, to start or stop investigations, or any of the things that are commonly alleged, that would be unacceptable in a nation of laws.
- bshock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Resignation. What a gentle senator. I'm still of the opinion that Gonzales should ritually disembowel himself in the White House rose garden. Nothing less could ever possibly restore a vestige of honor to this Constitutional traitor.
- BrokenClock, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I live in Coburn's district, and I voted for him. It's good to see that Washington hasn't taken his balls away like it's done to so many others.
- BrokenClock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4No doubt. Go us.
- jellygraph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4he was too kind
- Maarek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I currently live in Texas but am an Oklahoman and was there when the state elected this rather embarrassing person to the senate. Despite the fact that I agree with Coburn that Gonzalez should resign, this doesn't cover up for the fact that Coburn has been lockstep with the Bush Administration every step until this one. Still when this rat has jumped ship you know it's going down, I just expect that he might get caught in the undertow on this one.
- the6thReplicant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4That will go on the reel of classic moments of the Bush II administration. We'll watch it on the moon and say "Ahh, the naughties"
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8@jDavid: There's another medical doctor with integrity and courage, and he's also running for president: Ron Paul.
- the6thReplicant, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Actually I think he thinking about how many stabs in the back he has. I'm sure it was a proud moment for him and his family when he became AG. Now he must realise how bad he is...then again Habea Corpus moment..maybe he deserves it
- swrostmore, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Yes, all the major networks are STILL running VT as their top story. But Fox is the ONLY one that is not reporting on the Gonzales hearing AT ALL.
- tomesnyder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3A new movie is in order: Dr. Coburn Goes To Washington. You may disagree with Coburn on certain issues but at least you know where he stands!
- swrostmore, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5what kind of ***** are you talking about Media Matters? Are you referring to something specific or just making broad and baseless claims?
- GabrielS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Senator Coburn is so awesome. The guy is a thorn in every pork barrel spending politician, tells fools like Gonzales to resign, and flies home to Oklahoma to deliver babies(It's Dr. Coburn).
Earmark lobbyists hate Senator Coburn so that's more than enough reason to love him. - Nougat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@seanherman (#6246145) said: "just to correct a typo, in my second paragraph I meant to say "I think it's at least clear now that these investigations are justified." The double negative I used is a little loopy, and very confusing."
I disagree. When the quality you're rebutting about "these investigations" is "unjustified," it is appropriate to rebut the "unjustified" nature by describing the investigations as "not unjustified."
I actually feel that changing the positive|negative value of the descriptor dilutes the rebuttal. - the6thReplicant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@retardojesus
you're probably right, but there's always that nagging feeling in the back of my mind that Cheney and the other PNAC members try to put "minorities" in high profile positions to make it difficult for people to criticise it. - jrstinkfish, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5O....k.... any comments on the content of the video, or would you rather choose to shoot the messenger some more?
- CraigB12, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKblOAI6sHY
- jdavid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I voted for Badnarik, and I was one of 3%-6% of Americans that did not throw their vote away for party politics.
If two bulleys told you that you had to vote for one of them for class president, is that fair. Real votes, do not self select, like a bully telling to vote for he or his "skull and bones" brother.
Vote for the best candidate, and we will end up with the best country.
Vote for the least of two evils candidate, and we will end up being a country that is the least of all evil. - UGM2099, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"Hey Gonzales, resign to your FACE!"
- SOULEVENT, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I think you should all watch as much testimony of this as possible. It seems convenient for Fox News that there is always some minor or major TRAGEDY they can report on for DAYS and stop their viewers from being able to see IMPORTANT testimony as it relates to the Criminality of the White House.
As a student of fallacious lies, I have notice that FOX NEWS ALWAYS cuts out important Interviews and Investigation when it is LADEN with facts of how corrupt this white house is. So much for Kool Aid huh Fox...cant make kool aid if one of the ingredients is truth...
If any of you ever get a chance to compare past dates of different news outlets...you should see what FOX did when Alberto was laughing in the face of congress and America during Testimony of Spying on the American People...or What they Did when Valerie Plame was testifying to the facts of her husbands mission to Africa and the lies by the Right that she wasnt covert, or As recently as yesterday or even today I imagine (as it is always the case) they refuse to show TRUE LIVE testimony of the criminals...then their viewers might get a real sense of what THEY have helped THEM do to this country.
The Spirit of Truth is going to sack many of you like a ton of bricks...I suggest all of you stop being violent, lying little ***** and learn about EVERYTHING you possibly can about life, your spirit and what your here for before these sociopaths finish their quest of rearranging the freedoms you thought you had. - CaptainM4d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Burnin' down the house!
- seanherman, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7just to correct a typo, in my second paragraph I meant to say "I think it's at least clear now that these investigations are justified." The double negative I used is a little loopy, and very confusing.
- mbrutsch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The Hon. Senator best watch out he doesn't get invited to vacation in Cuba.
- Nogger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Gonzales should be relieved of office for medical reasons alone. As the hearing shows, he has memory like a sieve. He belongs in medical care and is not suited for the position of Attorney General.
- millyuns, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Legal expert for fox news?
- SOULEVENT, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Excuses, excuses...I dont need to tell tales, I've studied Fox News for 7+ years...they are subversive, they disseminate random opinions from vile, ignorant, warmongering, moneyworhshipping Americans and treat it as some FACT for their viewers, YET, ensure that the TRUTH and FACTS do not reach them, and the more people like you who attempt to be apologist for those snakes, the more you prove my point. You use the word "ALL"...which is a complete fabrication you just created in that thing you call a brain.
If you had any integrity you would already know this...you can keep pointing to the "ALL" media if you want, the biproduct of FOX NEWS attack on truth was other outlets racing to keep up with sensationism and fear mongering...but guess what, that ***** will one day come to an end...more and more people are onto the criminality of the White House and the subversiveness of Right wing Gestapos.
BTW, you can bash the liberals all you want, they are pretty ***** up too...but when it comes to the White House, Politics, War, and Media...hands down, YOUR the ones responsible for deceiving the world. Now, I want you to run along and go play Martial Law with your GI Joe dolls, maybe beat down a few innocent Americans for telling the truth...I dontknow, whatever floats YOUR boat. - ErrorS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hatch and Kyl are the only two that showed any real support for this man during the hearings..
Kyl spent his entire time thanking him for his strong arm dealing with the online gambling issues (swear to God), wasting the American public's time. Hatch basically made a speech about how he saw no evidence that Gonzales did anything wrong.
This isn't a partisan issue like many thought it was, I said it weeks ago and probably got dugg down for it. Specter tore Gonzales a new one, Graham was like a rabid dog, it was an amazing sight to see.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=mcxLcXRSeJ4 - SOULEVENT, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2yes, now Fox News gets to focus on Alec Baldwin all day instead of reporting IMPORTANT news to the nation.
- cl0r0x70, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So, you're basically saying that any of Bush's underlings should be able to claim "incompetence" to avoid the much more severe charges of political manipulation of the prosecutorial process.
Saying "I was an idiot who can't manage/remember" is much better than saying "I am a criminal." Are we really going to let them get away with this? - djparadise, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hmmmmm. crickets chirping....
The Lib theme song. - djparadise, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I am just wondering why he should resign? Besides the fact that he is a Bush appointee. I have yet to hear any evidence that points to wrong doing. If there is...send it my way. I would love to see it.
It seems to me that the Left's playbook is to fabricate scandle after scandle until '08. - viviwanu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Come on, people! Let's have some compassion here. What else would he do if he resigned? Flipping burgers at Mcdonald?
- cl0r0x70, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Before we go patting this assclown on the back, we should listen to the entire thing. This is the most telling quote from the Republican Senator:
"I disavow aggressively that there was a political nature in this (referring to the firings.)"
Translation: "Let's blame this on incompetency, throw Gonzales under the bus, and keep the White House and the GOP clean. It was a mistake, made by an idiot who should resign, but it's not the fault of my president or my party."
This is pure political scapegoating, period. The Senator is not part of the solution; he is the problem. -
