What is this guy on? - materia0001, on 10/10/2007, -14/+131I agree Bush is mildly retarded. However, I think his statement might be taken out of context here. I think he's using Mandela as a general term for democratic reformers in an effort to explain why no progressive reformers stepped up to plate under the Sadam regime (because they would indeed have been killed), not that Hussein literally killed Nelson Mandela.
If you want to be a credibly dissenter, don't use some kind of Fox news tactics and claim that Bush is now crazy because he believes something completely false, like Hussein killed Mandela (he's obviously drawing a comparison, and a bad one at that). There are plenty of other points that you can accurately make that can indeed prove our president's idiocy, but don't taint the side dissenters with faulty arguments. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -13/+91Thats great. This is the man in charge of the free world. Just great.
- cindylauper, on 10/10/2007, -10/+85It would be funnier if it wasn't so damn depressing.
- aliengoods, on 10/10/2007, -3/+60Well, he's done alcohol and cocaine, but I'm thinking this is the high you get from an unchecked power trip.
- EntropyMan, on 10/10/2007, -13/+59He later corrected the statement. "I meant 'mandala,' you know like those cartoons the Daily Lamma draws on the floor. Saddam killed all the mandalas. He caused China to invade Tibet too."
- Dumbledorito, on 10/10/2007, -2/+39I think I just heard the US Dollar slip another penny...
- RayInLA, on 10/10/2007, -4/+39There is simply no way to listen to this douchebag and conclude that he's anything more than a blithering *****.
- GreatDrok, on 10/10/2007, -2/+35Why do Americans keep trotting out the 'free world' myth? The USofA does not have a monopoly on freedom and many people there seem to have a strange idea of what freedom is. The US is gravitating towards a totalitarian state. All it needs is a declaration of martial law and you will be there. The only free people in the US are those in charge, everyone else is deluded if they think they are truly free.
- Fire4Effect, on 10/10/2007, -10/+39This only supports my claim that Bush wanted to nuke the world after 911 but couldn't figure out how to use the button. Seriously, his gaffes are becoming so common it's more suprising when he says something somewhat accurate.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+31You do realize it's a reflection of our culture and society, right?
The man is stupid and incompetent, yes, but people put him there. And who would do that? Stupid incompetent people. Enough who seriously wanted him in. - ButterBuddha, on 10/10/2007, -4/+31Just as ***** up as the people who voted for him....
- Disclaimer, on 10/10/2007, -4/+28Saddam is dead because Bush killed all the Saddams.
- dgtljunglist, on 10/10/2007, -8/+30If anyone here watches IT Crowd, this moment reminded me of when Moss had to come up with an excuse, fast... paused... and blurted out "SHE'S DEAD!" And when your presidency can be compared to British slapstick humor....
- rassoodock, on 10/10/2007, -2/+22Quote taken out of context. He wasn't saying that Mandela himself was dead, he was saying that anyone like Mandela doesn't rise up against Saddam because Saddam killed all those people.
- theinept, on 10/10/2007, -2/+21Dugg for truth. I'm no fan of Bush and Bush is clearly no wordsmith but it's clear what he meant to say. You could legitimately question the content of his assertion because it sounds like baloney, but the delivery is acceptable. It's not perfect but it makes enough sense.
- speakerfordead, on 10/10/2007, -14/+30Bush isn't saying Hussein killed Nelson Mandela. He is saying that Hussein killed all the Mandela-minded people in Iraq. While that may or may not be the case I think if you are going to attack someone you need to at least first not jump at everything as if every utterance made is stupid. Stop stretching.
- pellevoisin, on 10/10/2007, -9/+24Would that be the result of whiskey and cocaine through an IV drip?
- Tsujigiri, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16Damn it, who gave him access to figurative speech? I thought we had considered that strictly off limits to all NeoCons after that whole "series of tubes" business!
- jegerpenge, on 10/10/2007, -3/+18Thank you. You beat me to it. It's one thing to comment on his genuinely stupid quotes, but to me this one actually made a bit of sense. Don't think I'm a Bushie, I still think he's a dumb *****.
- zestyhedgehog, on 10/10/2007, -7/+22Man, after Sydney he is off the chain.
- FiP0, on 10/10/2007, -8/+22Well I believe that the situation in the iraq and south africa such as like.
- evilpettingzoo, on 10/10/2007, -3/+17He should try out for the miss teen usa pageant.
- ihlemic10, on 10/10/2007, -6/+20Dear World,
That toolshed only represents his opinon and not that of most of the American people. Please don't hate.
Sincerly,
A smart American - Pokle, on 10/10/2007, -9/+20It's quite ironic that so many of you are taking this statement literally and then calling Bush the idiot. He is certainly a leader that I don't agree with, but to take a metaphor as literal and then call him ignorant is silly at best.
- MrFisty, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12Free world? I think that definition has become a little stretched over the last eight years.
- RoboB0b, on 10/10/2007, -5/+16I'm pretty sure no one actually thinks that Bush says Saddam killed Nelson Mandela. He's obviously just making a poor metaphor but it's still BS that he's trying to claim Saddam killed everyone who could be a strong democratic leader in Iraq.
- Jugalator, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9No, they aren't locked away, just forced to stand in Freedom of Speech Zones to express their opinions at demonstrations. :-p
Anyway. Way to see things in only black and white. The thing with freedom is, is that as soon as just a little of it is starting to chip away, you no longer have it. In the USA, people are brawling about the habeas corpus lately. That would be a huge scandal if many political parties in other parts of the world would even *think* about abolishing. And Americans are failing at getting it *back*. And then there's the PATRIOT Act, and on and on it goes.
I can't say you haven't got "freedom", as that's a matter of definition and how high tolerance level you have, but it's not in a good shape anyway. - zombies187, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10We helped him destroy the Mandelas in the 80s.
- StarlessKnight, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Then he shouldn't have replied in the singular. "Mandela is dead." The Mandela? No, what we presume he meant was "The Mandelas in Iraq are dead" or "Mandelas of Iraq are dead." Singular suggests The Mandela. Plural suggest those like The Mandela.
Furthermore, Mandela is not dead in Iraq. You cannot kill "Mandela" or the spirit of Mandela/Ghandi/Martin Luther King/etc. You can kill Mandelas, those like Mandela, but it is highly presumptuous and arrogant to presume that every person like, or that could be like, Mandela are dead in Iraq. It'll take time, but the people of Iraq will pull themselves together. It could take generations, but if they care enough about their homes and their country they'll find a way. - onewingedangel9, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Really? I was too stupid to understand that.
- GreenSox, on 10/10/2007, -8/+16Well said. The left doesn't need a bunch of Hannity's on its side.
- lOvOl, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Has anyone stopped to realize that the only people involved in politics nowadays from the left and the right all are heavy drug users?
It seems like the only sane people are the ones who choose not to vote, because they know the game is rigged and there is not much they can do about changing things at the moment. Oh yeah, there is Ron Paul, but what I have seen from the political and media establishment sometimes makes me wonder if Russians under Putin have more say in what happens in their country than what goes on here. As an American, it is really hard to throw stones when sane, intelligent, and moral people are effectively barred from our government, while only drugged up loons and sociopaths like Hillary or Giuliani are your only so-called "voting" options. And don't get me started on Congress.
The only consolation is that if you look around the world, things are for the most part even more ***** up than in America as far as how politics work (and yes that includes pretty much all of self-righteous Europe as well).
It is like the entire world is living in the time of fools and cowards. - dumpyhumpy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7god bless US americans
- obxjdt, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8I took it as he was saying that there is no one in Iraq like Mandela, not that he was dead.
Wait a minute, I don't get it....He stole 2 elections, he was the master mind behind 9/11, formed a shadow government, etc, etc, and the democrats complain they can't stop him even though they have the power to....You say he's an idiot, and a dumb ass....
What does that say for your side???
Now there's something to think about (if you're capable of thought).
I know the routine, get flamed then buried..... - fgiono, on 10/10/2007, -7/+13Americans must be so proud
- consonance, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9Translation: Saddam Hussein personally killed Nelson Mandela in combat after destroying his army of clones.
- glucoseboy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Yeah, while he was down under they replaced him with clone programmed to do their bidding and.........Wait, he said what????
- mmortal03, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Get it right if you are going to try to mock it: Hussein is dead because Bush killed all the Husseins.
- rustybones, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8I second your comment... WTF is going on with this man
- jonnyeh, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Then how come when he invaded Iraq, only a handful of countries helped?
- facelesscoward, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8"I thought an interesting comment was made — somebody said to me, I heard somebody say, 'Now, where’s Mandela?' Well, Mandela’s dead because Saddam Hussein killed all the Mandelas."
Even if he was just making a comparison, the implication is that the person is asking "Where's Mandela?" because Mandela is dead and we need him around right now. Mandela isn't dead; he's just old. Bush may realize that, but the remark was terribly worded either way. - Jugalator, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8No, you are not a democracy. It's a republic. WTF?
Look at a few European countries, and there you have democracies. You should notice some quite wild differences too, like how much the people actually vote on, and how the political party systems work... And as for the wealth, that one is kind of balanced out by the by far world's largest debt, I'd think. - techweenie, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8Jeez, I hate to say this, but the point was a valid one -- if ineptly made. I doubt anyone here hates GW more than I do, but let's criticize him for killing our soldiers, not our language.
- EricSchC1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5No one said he that he said "the" Mandela was dead. He said Saddam killed all the Mandela's, meaning either Saddam killed everyone with that last name or Bush heard a "funny-sounding word" and thought "hmmm, Maybe they mean a race/sect/group of anti-Muslim" people.
- Protonz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5hmm... it would be fun to put waterproof pictures of bush in a bunch of public urinals. Preferably in a pro-bush area, like an airport or government building.
Yeah... someone should do that for my enjoyment, be sure to somehow make a non-disgusting youtube video for it. - EricSchC1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I think he thought a "mandela" was a type or group of people, perhaps anti-Muslim?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5No, maybe not diggers, but people get tasered for asking questions that those in charge don't like to hear.
You're only as free as they allow you to be. That's not freedom.
Freedom is to do whatever we want, as long as it's not harming or deceiving anyone. To have the govt get the ***** out of our personal lives. - Junkyarddawg, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7IT Crowd rocks. Best comedy show since The Office.
- M0b1u5, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7You do realise that's a ridiculous statement? There's very little "free" about your country. The rest of the world - maybe, but not your portion of it.
