- katiekonrath, on 10/06/2008, -17/+1048Thank you to everyone who is helping my friend.
~Katie - madmccoy, on 10/07/2008, -7/+371It's ***** that we ask our soldiers to put their lives on the line and then do stuff like this.
She got stop-lossed for 15 months, *OVER A YEAR*, and you sons of bitches won't let her have her dog? Seriously? - LeepII, on 10/06/2008, -7/+283Ive been in the military, I can tell you that the people in charge don't give a ***** about anything but their careers. Enlisted are routinely punished for the smallest of perceived infractions or insults, regardless of weather the event actually occurred.
- JessicaGottlieb, on 10/06/2008, -12/+272I wanted to believe that that this was fake. This belongs on the front page, please tell a friend.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Washington, DC October 1st - Operation Baghdad Pups is a SPCA International (www.SPCA.com) initiative created to provide medical care, clearance and transport for the animals our U.S. soldiers have come to love during deployment in the Middle East. Today, the United States military committed a crime against their own mentally wounded U.S. soldiers serving in Iraq. Commanding officers ordered the confiscation of a dog, Ratchet, befriended by a group of soldiers during a 15th month of deployment. Ratchet has been a lifeline to Sgt. Gwen Beberg. This morning, Ratchet was on his way to SPCA International rescue experts at the Baghdad Airport to be flown home to Gwen's parents in Minneapolis, MN when Sgt. Beberg's commanding officers ordered Ratchet confiscated and held in Iraq to face certain death.... - centerblack, on 10/07/2008, -3/+197Dugg.
***** stop-loss. I really hope your friend gets released from active duty soon, and that their dog is waiting at home for them when that day comes! - ardath, on 10/06/2008, -12/+187This is awful!!! I hope she gets her dog back. Sheesh.
Ardath - FearisFailure, on 10/06/2008, -8/+173You sign that paper you Sign your life away. Instead of the Poster Saying Uncle Sam wants you. It should be Uncle Sam OWNS YOUR ASS!!
- inactive, on 10/07/2008, -5/+148I am a former soldier. The way they treated us on a daily basis was down right illegal. Overwork us, sometimes they didn't feed us. They made sure we had water, but that's about it. We sometimes worked (no shooting or anything, and I was infantry) from 6 am - 12 pm just unloading things. It's run efficiently, I guess that's the only thing I can say. Made me pretty ***** miserable for 3 and a half years.
- RockMyMonkey, on 10/06/2008, -5/+142How long ago was a marine booted for throwing a puppy over a cliff? How is this different? Some commanding officers need to be court marshalled.
- BoneStamp, on 10/07/2008, -4/+141You'd think stop-loss would be enough of a punishment.
- barryfreed, on 10/06/2008, -10/+125If this is true, it's awful.
- EdwinJ85, on 10/06/2008, -4/+113I wish we could shoot the pricks who think up these stupid policies rather than the animals. How is it wrong or dangerous for soldiers to befriend animals? Didn't they do this all the time in ww2 by giving certain army groups mascots? What the ***** is wrong with these people?
- w099, on 10/06/2008, -7/+115This is horrible. Absolutely horrible.
- freshgrease, on 10/07/2008, -3/+98What? Is the puppy a suspected terrorist?
- madmccoy, on 10/06/2008, -9/+95I tried to bury you twice, but I'm just one man with one thumb.
A little help? - Toydriver, on 10/06/2008, -4/+86Regardless of what she has done to tick off the brass killing the dog is stupid. Oh that's right I was in the Army and had my own dealings with the brass so I am not surprised.
- WiseWeasel, on 10/07/2008, -2/+84It's not taxpayer money. It's a NGO funded by voluntary donations. It would cost more for the army to put a bullet in the animal's head and make someone bury it. THAT would be a total waste of taxpayer money, for something no one even wants (besides some power-tripping officer).
- cars4causes, on 10/06/2008, -8/+87My thoughts and prayers go out to Sgt.Beberg. So sad that the U.S. Military has to add another senseless murder to the many casualties of this war! Thanks to Sgt. Beberg for her service and for the valiant effort made to save a dog of war.
- sustainablogger, on 10/07/2008, -3/+79What possible purpose can this serve? How does rescuing a dog undermine any manner of military discipline, etc.? As the post mentions, it helped morale in this one case... this is just sheer institutional stupidity.

- MotherTalk1, on 10/06/2008, -5/+65Cannot believe that they would do that...how awful. Hope this helps
- chrystie69, on 10/06/2008, -4/+63This is Horrible! My BIL and his group had to find a home for a dog they befriended but found a local family to take the dog. This is just cruel.
- TheMachine1, on 10/07/2008, -6/+63"It is against military regulations for active duty troops to befriend animals"
Reminds me of the Katrina policy of refusing to allow people to take pets to shelters. Undoubtedly a lot of people died in New Orleans because they stayed home with their pets. The government has changed that policy.
If this soldier had meet and married an Iraqi would the US government had tried to block him from immigrating to the US to? - aforsberg, on 10/07/2008, -7/+62god damnit. our government sucks on a global scale.
- SissySlapParty, on 10/07/2008, -5/+58Inappropriate. Grow the ***** up.
- WhiteMike87, on 10/07/2008, -14/+67this is sickening. your country's government makes me want to ***** puke.
- ModadiMagno, on 10/06/2008, -18/+71I cannot stop crying about this. Horrible.
Yes, I wanted to believe it was spam nonsense, but there it is on the SPCA's website. - EdwinJ85, on 10/06/2008, -3/+54I take it you have never been in the Army?
- michaelSF, on 10/06/2008, -6/+55unbelievable!! if this is true, it's horrible.
- Shelle07, on 10/07/2008, -3/+50That's horrible! Please post an update if she gets to bring him home....
- BrilliantJeni, on 10/06/2008, -5/+52Terrible. Absolutely terrible.
- pingwax, on 10/07/2008, -1/+46First time I've ever written my congressman, Mark Udall. This seems like such a small thing to do to show a soldier we care for and appreciate their sacrifices. For all the shoddy treatment we have shown our soldiers, from the Walter Reed failures to the mental health care scandals in Fort Carson, we should applaud a soldier who found her own way to maintain her moral. Instead the military is working to crush her spirit. And now mine. Good luck to you and your friend.
- XxpokemasterxX, on 10/07/2008, -4/+48are you retarded?
- HookmasterCH47, on 10/07/2008, -2/+44We rescued a dog and took it back to Kuwait from Baghdad. We named her Baghdad Betty. She was a pretty awesome dog. Used to wander though the desert at night and snatch up lizards, scorpions, etc... Betty eventually got offed by Army MP's because it started roaming around with a group of feral dogs around Camp Arifjan. Damn that dog was sweet though. R.I.P. Betty.
- Bauer22, on 10/07/2008, -3/+44Right when you think your government couldn't get anymore ***** up... you read this.
- ironhide, on 10/06/2008, -3/+42done
- dafragsta, on 10/07/2008, -1/+40They make us want to puke too.
- wookee88, on 10/07/2008, -0/+36there are soldiers who get away from torturing, raping or even killing Iraqi civilians, and she get punished for saving a puppy?
- Observant1, on 10/06/2008, -6/+42cue michelle malkin trying to deny and rationalize something as sick as this.
- Snakebane, on 10/07/2008, -11/+46If the puppy gets shot, sue for
A) Emotional distress
B) Cruelty to animals
C) Blackmail (on the grounds tat she was essentially unlawfully kept in military service without consent and was denied a right other troops held at the same time under threat)
D) sexism(?) how many of the other people who found animals were women?
and E) pissing their bosses (We the lawful citizens of the United States of America) the f**k off!
I'm posting a link to the articale on myspace - WiseWeasel, on 10/06/2008, -5/+37Why would you want to make the soldiers who grow attached to these animals suffer more than they have to (not to mention the animals themselves)? Throw them a bone, will ya? These soldiers have sacrificed a huge amount for all of us; seems like this is the least we could do in return if it brings comfort to them. If this NGO wants to manage and finance the return of these animals and take them off the hands of the military, what's the problem exactly? Why do you find it preferable to cause even more suffering and loss of life? Sending these pets home isn't taking away any resources from efforts to provide local essential services and reduce humanitarian crises.
- avrygoodfrnd, on 10/07/2008, -3/+35Did anybody ever say anything about taxpayers paying for this dog? No.
- ghall, on 10/07/2008, -3/+35That is just sick. I loose whatever faith I have left in humanity whenever I hear something like this.
- arashamedani, on 10/07/2008, -2/+33What the ***** is wrong with you?
- rmfootball69, on 10/07/2008, -4/+35***** ridiculous, i really hope this brings the attention necessary.
- VacantThoughts, on 10/07/2008, -6/+37Gladly, douchebag
- Aero347, on 10/07/2008, -8/+38Welcome to Nazi Germany. Enjoy your stay
- mannymix03, on 10/07/2008, -0/+29You have a true patriot, someone who has served 15 months past what they signed up for, with no complaining or anything. Someone who survived an additional 15 months in a warzone, and built a strong personal relationship with an animal they rescued, they want to send the animal home to be cared for until they can go home to meet it and you take it and threaten to kill it? I wouldn't do that, the emotional strain that will inflict on someone can be pretty crazy. You should never do that to anyone, especially a true patriot who served their country ABOVE AND BEYOND their call of duty.
