- Insightful, on 11/05/2009, -8/+30Another fact-free self aggrandizing editorial from WSJ. Why not submit something from Fox News which is essentially the same?
This is worth repeating.
Republicans won in a purple state where the other candidate was anything but progressive (anti-healthcare, anti-labor, anti-environment, etc). Republicans also won in a blue state where the incumbent was wildly unpopular and failed to deliver on his campaign promises. How much do these two elections have impact on national policy? ZERO.
Democrats, however, won a seat they intended to keep and another in a district that has not elected a Democratic Congressman in over 100 years. There are now two more Democrats in the Congress compared to last week.
You can this a Republican victory? In that case, if that is the best you do, may the best party win. - askantik, on 11/05/2009, -6/+22So you don't like 40 hour work weeks or 8 hour days? You hate vacation time and sick time? Those are un-American, I guess. *****, so much anti-union ***** on Digg despite union membership barely being double digits in America... so SOMEONE is making up ***** without ever having even been in a union.
- askantik, on 11/05/2009, -4/+15What the ***** are you talking about? That has absolutely nothing to do with unions or what they do. Unions protect workers from their employer... I don't know what the hell you think unions are.
- uncleosbert, on 11/05/2009, -5/+14yeah! the right to free association is total *****! now, aren't you at work? you get on your knees and thank your boss for his patronage right now!
- mulling, on 11/06/2009, -2/+10What's this news from Fox News Print Edition?
- fadeout, on 11/06/2009, -1/+9The WSJ during Bush's administration: "all congressional elections are local, this means nothing!"
The WSJ during Obama's administration: "a Democrat lost, this is the end of Obama and the liberal agenda!" - askantik, on 11/06/2009, -0/+7That's a valid point-- but I'm just saying without unions, we could still be employing children or working 12 hour days. However, I don't want my hours cut if I'm going to make less money...
- Zomgondo, on 11/06/2009, -5/+12WSJ = autoburied.
- detcade, on 11/05/2009, -3/+9Tuesday essentially meant nothing; the GOP is just trying to gain spirit points to get more people into their purely emotional cause, based on skewed and ideological crankiness. Obama wouldn't seem so slow if the Republicans weren't delaying him left and right.
- Mercedes383, on 11/06/2009, -0/+5I'm in the Maritime Union of Australia. Probably the most solid and powerful union in Australia now. Despite this we don't sit around trying to make as much money for the least amount of work, nor do you have to slip us a $50 to get anything done. Yesterday I worked 22 hours because of an unexpected breakdown needed a quick repair so we volunteered to stay and do the job as it was quicker than using contrators. If we had not done this then the company would have had to have postoned a scheduled job.
Not all unioners fit the stereotype.
On the flip side, if you want to find out about some really atrocious union behaviour then do some research into the Electric Boat Company that is owned by General Electric. Particulary around the 60's, 70's and early 80's. - askantik, on 11/06/2009, -0/+5There's a flip side to everything, of course, but you have these people demonizing unions that don't even understand what they DO much less have any experience with them. It's just sad. Our union representation here in the States used to be 35% or more and in some countries today it's upwards of 90%... yet UNIONS ARE ALWAYS BAD! I mean, of course there is corruption in unions at times and they do dumb ***** sometimes... they are made up of human beings.
I just feel like a lot of people speak without knowing.... y'know? - askantik, on 11/06/2009, -0/+5Gotta love how a guy on that video commented about how he is OK with child labor since a little money probably helped the family. ***** letting that kid go to school or, you know, having a childhood. Heh.
- uncleosbert, on 11/06/2009, -0/+5well brad, i'm sure you would have hated the 80 hour work week even more. tell you what... which do you hate more, work or school?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YPw4jTDKYbg - Blinker1315, on 11/05/2009, -8/+13That's too harsh an assessment, or at least too glib. I didn't vote for Obama, but held my nose supporting McCain. Voting for Obama wasn't a "fashion statement," at least by most Americans, but a "hope" that someone, anyone, could get the country out of its economic crisis. And I was at least glad he won instead of Hillary Clinton. That said, Obama has ceded power to Congress, has proven to be indecisive, and has tacked to the left, instead of the center, where a majority of voters are. He's in over his head, has lousy advisers, and has learned a great speech doesn't solve problems. And yes, if fortune doesn't smile upon American, we'll be left with higher taxes, the choking of small business, and an economy that will be stagnant at best. It's key that the GOP find a national leader who can appeal to the independent, moderate voters, and reduce Democratic control a year from now.
- Mujokan, on 11/05/2009, -3/+8Too bad there's not some feature where I can automatically bury every comment from a name that ends in the letters IP, as you progressively get banned over and over.
- Rantus, on 11/06/2009, -2/+6What do Republicans really have to offer? Seriously, let's sing it all together as we all know it so well:
Lower taxes!
Fiscal Responsibility (Hahahahahahaha)!
Smaller Government!
No Unions!
Well, they may actually try to keep one of those promises and it sure as hell ain't small govt. They're so full of ***** it isn't even funny, and they're dumb as bricks to boot. Just look at Sarah Palin. WTF is this woman supposed to be? And who in their right mind would want her running the country? I voted for Obama not because he was black but because he had a plan. And I don't give a ***** what anybody says; it was no walk in the park for him to get where he got to. It was next to impossible realistically. And now that he's in office all the republicans do is waste time and whine like bitches.
So ***** the Rupert Murdoch owned WSJ and their surprising-Fox-like Op-Ed pieces that they keep coming out with. The Republicans have no plan and no desire to make anything better for anybody other than themselves. Jersey deserves Christie, just wait until he sinks his teeth into that state. He'll do everything he can to make things look good on paper up until the point where they blow up, just like what Corzine's republican predecessor did. And Virginia is in the south, so there's no surprise there. If people are actually stupid enough to start believing the repubs ***** after the massive messes they made and want to put them back in power then go right ahead, we deserve everything we get if that happens.
Oh, yeah: ***** YOU LIEBERMAN YOU ***** PIECE OF TRASH. - Insightful, on 11/06/2009, -2/+6I went to website of the biggest union in North America. On its front page is its agenda laid out for everyone to see and there are four:
* Healthcare reform
* Immigration reform
* Stop big bank greed
* Support employee free choice
I do not know about you but they sound good to me and they are what I want.
Tuesday's election (Republicans winning two state elections and Democrats winning two *federal* elections) is a win for this agenda. - mbraynard, on 11/05/2009, -2/+6I think when you quote someone (your first line), you should give attribution.
- Thistlejack, on 11/06/2009, -1/+5I would say doing whatever possible to earn as much money as you can while performing as little work as possible is a decidedly American concept.
- bigterguy, on 11/05/2009, -20/+23"Economically, the Obama majority was a top-and-bottom coalition. The Democratic ticket carried voters with incomes under $50,000 and over $200,000, and lost those in between. As the shrewd liberal analyst Thomas Edsall has noted, there's a tension between what these groups want. High earners in non-Southern suburbs have been voting Democratic since the mid-1990s largely because of their liberal views on cultural issues; low earners vote Democratic because they want more government money shoveled their way. "
***
He misses the point. The Obama electorate was not a coalition of forces who got together and saw common ground and compromised. It was a phenomenon. Voting for the first black candidate gave absolution to all of these folks for their perceived 'original sin of racism', like an inoculation against the flu. But one only needs to get inoculated against the racism flu ONCE. Obama's message was so generic that they projected their own agendas on him. But now many of these folks are learning that Obama's agenda was not what they thought. They are starting to judge him based on his actions, not on some high-sounding but empty catch phrases. - brad3378, on 11/06/2009, -1/+4@Askantik
This shouldn't even be an issue of whether or not Union Labor is good or bad. I hate 40 hour work weeks.
In a modern technology based economy, where software, automation, and robots have made workers more productive, a 40 hour work week is unnecessary and obsolete. Shouldn't technology be leveraged to make our lives **Easier** ?
What's the point of being a technologically superior society if we still need to spend 40 hours a week pretending to be fully busy at work? I for one would welcome 3 day weekends every week. If you want to continue working 40 hours, maybe you should be earning overtime for anything past 32 hours while I spend my newly freed up hours pursuing new hobbies and spending time with family at home. - inactive, on 11/06/2009, -1/+4it doesn't count unless they molested you too
- detcade, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2The GOP has been whining about how Obama has done nothing despite his promises, while fighting against his reform and other actions vigorously. I'm just pointing out that hypocrisy.
- Rantus, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2You can try imacros :)
- 3tcp, on 11/05/2009, -5/+7"You can this a Republican victory?"
I'LL CAN THIS WHATEVER I WANT - RatatRatR, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1How profoundly backward.
- digitalArtform, on 11/06/2009, -1/+2Unions , like copyrights and patents, are monopolies.
- inactive, on 11/05/2009, -3/+4I would if I knew who said it.
- nickymouse, on 11/06/2009, -2/+2So we should have a dictatorship? What ever Obama wants shall be made into law? Let each side represent they're districts. Besides, Dems have a super majority, GOP can't hold up *****.
- Blinker1315, on 11/05/2009, -6/+6If you read the article you'd know it wasn't an editorial from the WSJ, but a signed (Michael Barone) op-ed piece.
- fingerrockets4, on 11/06/2009, -0/+0Yes there are some problems with the modern union. but on the other hand they are a good check on corporate greed. I have little sympathy for executives of large cooperation having "problems" with unions. When they themselves are in a self destructive chase to the bottom for short term profits.
That's what did GM in, they had nutty management and a nutty union. I just wish we never bailed them out. - ftc08, on 11/06/2009, -1/+1At first, maybe.
Then came along the GOP's 2008 ticket and tactics, and America overwhelmingly decided that they were sick of the *****. Using Rovian underhandedness, Jerome Corsi as a source of "facts", and the most obvious pandering to the lowest common denominator possible. - fingerrockets4, on 11/06/2009, -0/+0This has as much significance as the St. Louis Rams winning a game and thinking they are going to the Super Bowl.
- nepidae, on 11/06/2009, -3/+2Unions killed my father and raped my mother.
- starlon2, on 11/06/2009, -3/+2We have ourselves a predictor of futures here. You know, you should be using that talent at the horse races instead of spoiling the political spectrum. I know, I know, it's hard to get everyone to believe the truth. Well, money talks, so get to betting, Bronco! (Ok, horse races are booooooring.) Holy hell; just think if we had political betting in America. You could then be doing what you love AND making ***** loads of cash at the same time! All because you have it all ***** figured out. Bless you, Lord Jayjayjoni!
- inactive, on 11/05/2009, -9/+8He's exactly right.
Try setting up your display booth for a convention in a "union" convention center. You aren't even allowed to plug in your own extension cord. The union asswipes stand around doing nothing, they don't help at all unless you slip them a $50.
Every union I've ever encountered is totally fvcked up like that. Unions are made up of people who want to do as LITTLE work as possible, but get paid a lot.
If there are unions out there that aren't as ***** up, I'd like to see them. - nickymouse, on 11/06/2009, -5/+4The modern union is a joke... a bad joke. Most of the unions should face penalties under US anti-trust and collusion laws, since they monopolize labor. As a company, you can't be competitive with a union labor force. You can't provide employee incentives, you can only award your laborers by years they served and not by performance, you can't layoff economically lay off workers, you can't accurately predict future labor costs, manufacturing caps, you can't be an agile company etc etc. Can anyone give me a union company that outperforms it's union competitors? People are sick of working so hard and sacrificing so much as the union worker sits on his/her ass and collect a big paycheck.
Unions have served their purpose. - jayjayjoni, on 11/06/2009, -7/+4Republicans just cheated. Their victories do not matter at all. They will lose more seats in the 2010 election and continue to lose more presidential elections unless they follow Obama's agenda and stop the obstructionist way.
- inactive, on 11/05/2009, -17/+14Sooooo true....Voting for Obama a year ago was a fashion statement...much like it was once a fad to buy Beanie Babies, pet rocks and Cabbage Patch Kids.
But instead of ending up with a ridiculous dust-collector at the bottom of your closet, the Obama fad is going to leave you with higher taxes, a reduced retirement fund, no job and a one-year wait for an MRI. - dinglebutt, on 11/06/2009, -9/+5***** unions
- inactive, on 11/06/2009, -9/+3it's looking like republicans will stomp democrats in the next elections considering obama is being exposed as a fraud every day
- Bagos1, on 11/05/2009, -15/+10Here's a union.
You put a lamp into a socket by yourself in a certain office. A union worker walks in to instal your lamp and finds you did this already. You get a call from HR to come down and explain your actions as you may have put people in harms way by plugging in that lamp by yourself.
That's what unions are in the US
Total *****. - inactive, on 11/05/2009, -22/+14Good...unions are a completely un-American concept.
- inactive, on 11/05/2009, -12/+1Stick around...you might learn something.
