- truspector, on 10/12/2007, -11/+53"Didn't want to seem like they were gay bashing."
Can people really be stupid enough to believe this. Republicans hate gay people. There is that whole no gay marriage thing. - BullyJack, on 10/12/2007, -7/+43I don't know why people are hyper-analyzing this pedophile. He's a freak...end of story.
- ScornForSega, on 10/12/2007, -13/+47I'm enjoying watching the GOP's pathetic attempts to spin this story.
"We didn't say anything 'cause we didn't want to seem homophobic."
"The Democrats set Foley up!"
...oh yes... backpedal some more my little neocons... backpedal some more. - FlyingLlama, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25this is like saying "if 16 year old girls weren't so hot i wouldnt want to ***** them, its their fault"
- danielsasona, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24This is an amazingly ungrounded argument. No doubt there are those who would be swayed by it, for pushing a close sequence of buttons on issues many people want to believe in.... tolerance is harmful to the healthy family, gays are inherently more likely to prey upon children, diversity is not only not inherently good- it is suspicious.... but I have a hard time seeing this interpretation sticking. It seems like a clear attempt at a diversion from the real issue of preying on minors, and covering for those who do. I think something the GOP is forgetting in pursuing this line of defense is that the issues of child safety and child sexuality resonate with voters, so it is easy to mobilize voters around those issues. In this case, the cart is being put before the horse in the sense that they are, instead of asking for the support of voters to marginalize child sexuality in order to remain supportive of a network of people in high places who de-prioritized it....
- BullyJack, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19The GOP did not release this information, and they're not trying to find a reason for political gain. They're backpedaling quickly.
This is a black eye just prior to elections (released to the media in a very timely manner). What I would like to know is how long this information was known and by whom. Who allowed this pedophile to continue practicing his perversions? - PopcornDave, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15@flyingllama
Well ya wouldn't...
And in all seriousness, if you look at 16 year olds today, I defy most people to actually peg them as 16, not 18+ -- at least until they open their mouths to talk. - Sublime059, on 10/12/2007, -7/+17So according to the GOP Homosexuality and Pedophilia is the same thing... hmm.. that is kind of ***** up.
I can see why they are going that angle because all of the red states full of white trash pretty much believe that. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Holy crap is this stupid. I barely know where to begin...
(1) Foley is not under fire for homosexuality, he's under fire for pedophilia. As much as scum like to pretend that the two are the same, they are not.
(2) If criticizing Foley was going to lead to counter-criticism of "gay-bashing", then just where is that counter-criticism now?
(3) Since when have right-wingers ever been fearful of being homophobes? They're the ones who try to focus on the "homosexual agenda" and the specter of gay marriage instead of focusing on real issues at election time! - varmit, on 10/12/2007, -8/+17Like they are not gay bashers already by trying to outlaw gay marriage.
- olun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9If you believe that "tolerance" and "diversity" (the anti-proponents of today's GOP) are what prevented them from taking down a pedophile, then I would really question their stance on "family values" and "moral virtue". How can you say that you were afraid of being politically incorrect in this case? It's an insult to our intelligence to say that you can't differentiate between sex with minors and sex with consenting adults. Regardless of the moral questions concerning both acts, pedophilia has nothing to do with gay rights.
- funkpucker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Read the most recent copy of the Atlantic Monthly. It talks about how Republicans want to LOSE the next election. In fact, the best case is for them is to lose A LOT of seats, in order to create a strongly Democrat controlled congress, leaving all the blame for the ***** state of morality, war, justice, and truth up to the dems, just before the '08 election. Why did this information come out now, instead of last year?
On the flip side, top dems will say that their BEST case scnario is to come up just shy of a majority (making up about 10 seats). How large of a victory do you think the dems are awaiting this November? I'd guess the dems will railroad the repubs in this next election. Tons of media will cover the landslide change in political power. Nothing will change in the next two years, but instead get worse (not because of ineffectual dems, but just the natural progression of events). Then media will cover the horrid job the dems have done the last two years, leading up to the 08 election.
The dems will likely lose the 08 election, because you all are bashing this ***** rep from Bush Florida. It's all manipulated people. Lets talk about some guys sexual habits rather than the fact that the top 1% are making 10 times more money than in the last 5 years. How much have your wages gone up in the last 5 years? 1000% I don't think so. Wake up. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9OK, so tolerance and diversity leads to child molestation, and (by an earlier headline today) evolution and abortion lead to child killing. Got it.
Coming up next: Downloading free music causes global warming, the first amendment leads to terrorism, the rest of the amendments besides the second is causing high gas prices, and any freedom you have left causes cancer, Golf War syndrome, and the recession. I think that will wrap it up. - jdgiotta, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9@mrfoos: Your "News for nerds" theory went out the window when you started to care about the Political Opinion category of digg.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9The same people who voted for Bush are the same people who...
...think that global warming is a liberal communist plot to destroy industry.
...think that evolution is a liberal atheist plot to destroy Christianity.
...think that gay marriage is a liberal Satanic plot to somehow destroy civilization (no seriously, read their rhetoric sometime).
Hmm. I'm sensing a pattern here. - geronimo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7He's blaming everyone except for the perp. the same guy said Hastert didn't make this known last year for fear of being called a 'gay basher.'
Despite the name "Family Research Council", it is clear that it is just a wing of the GOP and doesn't really care about families, just whatever's good for the GOP. But they'll of course tell you all about family values. - KnightMareInc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9god forbid these people own up their mistakes.
- JonnyTrombone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7So every time a Republican says that homosexuality is wrong, immoral, unnatural or evil... they're not gay bashing. But calling a pedophile a pedophile *is* gay bashing? .... "I reject your reality and substitute it with my own"
- The_Wallbanger, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8If we would have had the ability to wiretap without warrants then NONE of this would have happened!! Damn Democrats!
/Sarcasm - jdgiotta, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@lakawak: I agree that umbriago's comment is simply buffoonish, but you're attempt to counter his argument makes you look even stupider. I mean you're arguing with a tree.
- totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Here's a novel thought: Foley is responsible for the Foley scandal.
- jbus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5So the GOP protects 50+y/o Republican politicians that prey on under age teens because they don't want anyone accusing them of being gay bashers... That's the funniest / most mind boggling thing I've read all day. This is like them saying they did nothing about it because they didn't want people to say they were bashing Floridians, or men, or white GOP politicians, etc.... It makes no sense whatsoever, especially since the GOP has shown no previous restraint when it comes to gay bashing anyway. Why would they care now?
Through all of these excuses what they are really trying to do is make this about him being gay, rather than it being about him being a sexual predator who happens to be gay. By doing this they are actually gay bashing while they claim that they were trying not to gay bash. Well, Last I heard, there are straight sexual predators as well, but maybe they think that they can spin all this to their advantage by making it a gay issue and getting their base all worked up like they did with the last election. - mikesherov, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5The spin on this is making me sick:
Republicans: "Dems are trying to turn this into a political issue."
Democrats: "Republicans knew about this and did nothing."
And what's the outcome? Foley's blaming the whole thing on drugs, and will probably walk scot free. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Hey Amish, I completely agree with you 100%! Comparing *****'s to pedo's is definitely stupid and everyone sees it. I think those comments display their ignorance on their own and nothing else really needs to be added to that.
As for Clinton, people give two ***** about Monica, what they're talking about is his attempted rape of Juanita Broderick and the sexual harassment of Paula Jones. The fact that he found a porker (Monica) that actually bought his lines is superficial.
And yeah, Foley should be shot point blank in the face w/ a Desert Eagle. But we shouldn't stop there. Teddy Kennedy still needs to go down for killing that young girl, along with all the other politicians of ANY political persuasion who do sick and twisted ***** because of their societal status. - jdgiotta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4What take?
Endue us with your wisdom, I fail to see the relation. The argument is just the type of you like to hear, defensive of a criminals & hate filled. - ryawn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6The same people that voted for dubyah are the ones who believe this horse *****. Go figure.
- Sublime059, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9Lakawak, you need to seriously stop with the defending of pedophiles and criminal organizations. You are sick.
- VolatileWhimsy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm a republican and could care less if anyone is gay.. The only thing that I am concerned here and ready to lynch the guy about is the pedo stuff... Seriously.. And anyone who knew and didn't inform the authorities has also committed a crime. Nor do I give a crap why it came out now. As long as the repubs clean house of all who knew they are doing the right thing..
I just hope the dems have the forethought to get theirs that knew as well.. :/ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Proves that you don't need an education to be on the television.
- jellygraph, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4i love the way he tried to shift the blame from Foley (and the others) to something / someone else.... seems to be all that Republicans are good for lately...
party of the "blame everyone else" - AmishRefugee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@skyshock
true, it does seem to be a founded fear, but they are waaaaay off on the claim that homophobia and pedophelia are the same thing. I think its safe to say that just about everyone that's not a part of NAMBLA looks down upon pedophelia
Jon Stewart said it very well yesterday that considering a pedophile as a homosexual is much more of a cause for "gay bashing" than trying to remove a pedo from congress. The republicans are honestly just looking for excuses
and then they bring up Clinton, making the presumption that adultry and pedophelia are equally horrible things. While adultry is certainly wrong, pedophelia is absolutely vile.
And to think of all the heat that Foley gave Clinton back in the day is simply ridiculous
thats my 2 cents - mojee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3So according to Republicans:
Man/Boy Love equals homosexuality, which they didn't want to do anything about for fear of bashing.
So if it were Man/Girl Love, then it would've just been something heterosexual, which would've made it ok.
Solution: little girl pages for all!
...Jackasses.
//Am a conservative. - millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Somehow I'm not surprised that the Republicans are trying to spin this so that...
1. It somehow blames Democracts
2. It somehow involves Clinton
3. It somehow doesn't make the rest of the GOP look bad
Good luck! - Clive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Three cheers for America's love of Relativism!
- Domdogg123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Did anyone else read Tony Perkins and immediatly think of 'Heavyweights'?
- jdgiotta, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Most people will accept any lie as truth if it comes from an "infallible" source. Even though you've tied GOP to Tony Perkins was unfounded, everyone also has to realize that his organization is coming to the defense of the GOP. CNN wanted a comment from Tony Perkins because of his organizations commitment to the Republican Party except Tony came out with relational statements rather then committing to their public agenda.
- MrBlackthorne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The headlines tomorrow will read, "GOP supports gay marriage, denounces gay bashing."
- medieval, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4mrfoos:
it's happening in the rest of the country, too. digg isn't the only place. - dorothys, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yet another example of the "dumbing down of America" - spin masters like Perkins hope that if they just keep denying the truth, and keep on repeating the same nonsense over and over again that people will mistake what is familiar with what is actually true.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"Can people really be stupid enough to believe this. Republicans hate gay people. There is that whole no gay marriage thing."
Well, there's a precedent for it... Gerry Studds. Newt wanted to out him early on and did, but was then lambasted as a homophobe. So it's not as if this fear is unfounded.
As for the whole gay marriage thing, Republicans feel that would somehow send a message to Church's that they would have to perform gay marriage ceremonies and they don't want to interfere w/ the whole separation of church and state thing.
But apparently dissenting opinions aren't tolerated here on Digg, so I'm sure no one will read this after it's buried by the horde of Democrats. Amazing how Bush-like some of you can be when it comes to others' opinions. - Galphanore, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Am I the only one in this whole freaking country that noticed he didn't break any laws everyone assumes he did? Even if he did want to go have sex with the kid if he got married first that would be a-o-kay by Florida law. (http://www.avert.org/aofconsent.htm) He's an unmarried man trying to find a date in a manner that, according to his states laws, is completely legal.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2mrfoos brings up many good points, yet he's buried? You would think that someone with an opinion that legitimately debunks mrfoos' post would WANT mrfoos' post to be seen by others if they truly think it's non-sense.
The rampant burying of dissenting conservative opinions only shows that most people here are too cowardice to formulate a proper argument against it. You'd rather sweep it under the rug and pretend they didn't read it. - Galphanore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And by the same rule if he was living in Florida he wouldn't have broken any laws unless he consumated before marriage with the kid.
- ozziedog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If Foley married the page, would it be ok?
- bshniper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's still unwelcome advances in a work environment. It is clear sexual harassment.
That's the real problem here. And don't tell me the Democrats are at all clear of this! There have been 2 recent example, the Governor of New Jersey appointed his incompetent lover director of homeland security, and the press and parties covered that up for years as well. - migs87, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just like the fact that he is now trying to pass his actions off as a "result" of alcohol and being molested at a young age and not taking responsibility for his actions. Then again that's the American way. I would think that an apology would be the first step before the 13 steps or maybe that is like the 8th step or something.
- nalf38, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Wow...not only Republicans against homosexuality, they're against tolerance and diversity, too? Should we send all African-Americans back to Africa while we're at it? I'm not sure I've ever seen those two words used as though they were epithets before.
- ZenMojo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Pat Buchanan tried to blame Foley's pedophilia on his homosexuality by referring to the percentage of child molesting priests who were outed and happened to be homosexual. He of course ignores gay priests who haven't molested anybody, the straight priests who molested children, and the fact that those priests must have been Catholic and may have been molested themselves by priests growing up.
They also ignore that gay people couldn't get married anywhere for centuries in this country, so taking vows of celibacy aren't really that much of a sacrifice and more likely to attract those who are already forced into celibacy (NOT considering chastity here, just celibacy). - kingygk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The truth comes OUT. The paige was 18. ABC news reveals his name. Jordan Edmond. This whole thing is a sham. When are the Gays gonna fight back and say they are not pedofiles.
