- RogerStrong, on 10/11/2008, -0/+4True conservatives DO have a Canada to go to: Canada itself.
For fiscal conservatives:
While the US has been bankrupting itself, piling record deficit after record deficit on it's already massive debt for the last 8 years, Canada has had budget surplus after budget surplus and has been steadily paying down it's debt. Even the last two *Liberal* prime ministers had budget surpluses.
For political conservatives:
The Conservative party is in power in Canada, and will likely form at least a minority government in the current election. Our last Liberal Prime Minister, Paul Martin, was a conservative in all but name. In many ways we were less socialist than the US even *before* the US nationalized all its investment banks - we simply kept them under a minimum of regulation.
We don't have the US's essentially free trade with China, so we haven't had the major job losses that make Mexican trade insignificant by comparison. Our free trade with Mexico is minimized by distance and transport costs. We have illegal immigration, but nothing on the scale of the US.
We don't have European-style socialized medicine - most clinics and hospitals are privately owned. We have socialized health insurance - but most many buy private insurance on top of that. Despite claims otherwise, paying extra to get private healthcare is common, even for the middle class.
We have oil, and lots of it.
For foreign affairs conservatives:
Canada keeps it's foreign entanglements to a minimum. It did not take part in the Iraqi invasion. We're in Afghanistan - a wing of their previous government did after all kill a large number of Canadians - but we have a set timeline for leaving. We tend to do the *opposite* of what neo-con think-tanks like the CFR recommend.
For religious conservatives:
We don't have the separation of church and state that the US has. Sure, we don't let religion trump human rights, but we're OK with the occasional religious reference in government documents. Public schools can and do have prayer meetings before class, where wanted. In my riding the Conservatives are the *left* - with the Christian Heritage Party on the right.
So really, conservatives can feel at home in Canada too. - acroyear2, on 10/13/2008, -0/+1Thank you, thank you, thank you. How soon can we send them over to you? They've been stinking up the joint here for some time. Also, be sure you warn the muslims, feminists, and anyone who speaks French that they're coming your way.
- cowboytrumpet, on 10/13/2008, -0/+0Conservatives can go live in those expat enclaves in Mexico with all the other white folks who love feeling as if they have conquered the "other" by having them as servants.
- cowboytrumpet, on 10/13/2008, -0/+0Who has used the word "*****" since that guy Francis in the movie Stripes?
- COINTELPROAgent, on 10/11/2008, -4/+3Ever hear what happens to them after they get there? Me either. Things that make you go hmmm...
- inactive, on 10/11/2008, -4/+2Canada is going to be pissed if we send all of our scruffy mutts north.
