- algaeturd, on 10/04/2008, -6/+153There is a simple answer to this and I'll tell you how it comes about:
Guys like Karl Rove aren't intellects but they are intelligent men. They look at a problem and they try to solve it. They see the election as a problem and their solution: Go for the numbers. Because numbers, not intelligence, is what it takes to win an election.
What is by far and large America's greatest resource right now in the population? Stupidity. People have become lazy. They've become fat. And they've become dumber over the years. So what do they do? TARGET THAT MARKET. Their message is no longer a one of conservatism! They no longer have to tell the truth or justify anything. They look that 'average american' in the face through the television screen and lie through their teeth, putting on an act that wouldn't fool a dog, but somehow it fools millions of Americans.
They don't give a ***** if you make fun of how illogical and irrational their speeches, plans and stances on the issues are. Why? They're trying to beat you, not impress you. And NOTHING is off limits for these people. That's why they can appeal to the lowest common denominator by slinging mud and spreading lies. If they perpetuate ***** like Obama is a Muslim and doesn't wear a flag pin, they REALIZE these idiots out there will grasp onto those and perpetuate them further in Wal Mart, at the local bar, in the barber shops...they REALIZE this. And it works.
The largest base in this country is the base without an education. It's hard to become educated. It takes time, money and lots of effort and commitment. So like all things that are at rest, these people tend to stay 'at rest.'
Tell them what they want to hear. Appeal to them emotionally. Poise the other side as the enemy and unAmerican. Talk down to them on their level to where you don't appear threatening. Stupidity is VIRAL in this country right now. It's the only way to explain the unabashed support for Palin. It makes NO sense on any rational, intellectual level. But when you realize who is supporting this woman, there isn't a TRULY intelligent one among them because by the laws of intelligence and intellect, anyone with a brain would see through the act, the charade and the lies.
So where does that leave us? A country in SERIOUS trouble. Intelligence is demonized, the truth is demonized, education is somehow demonized. And it's going to get much, much worse. We're on a slippery slope with no end in sight. Until there is a backlash against the stupidity and ignorance that left us where we're at currently as a nation, we'll never start to gain traction to shift in favor of education and intellect in terms of our leaders.
We have some of the DUMBEST ***** people in politics and America picks them to guide this country. Then the country tanks like a lead balloon and these idiots are sitting around wondering, 'what happened?'
Americans learn the hard way if they learn at all these days. Mostly, they just seem to prefer not learning at all.
What a state of ***** we're in. Seriously. I don't care what anyone says, Palin poised as a potential president is the most embarrassing thing this county has ever stood up to support. Ever. And that's a sad historic slide for us on the whole. We may never recover from where we're at now. - wherearemymeds, on 10/04/2008, -11/+97Well put. And that's without todays bizarre statements that McCain is 'going to take the gloves off' and that Palin yesterday called Obama 'reckless".
What's in god's name is wrong with you both?
Why would you even want yourselves in charge? - nobillary, on 10/04/2008, -11/+92It's strange that this article would show up today. As I was watching Pat Buchanan on MSNBC the other night, he was absolutely besotted by Gov Palin's performance at the debate! He didn't care that she really didn't answer any of the questions asked by Gwen Ifill. Or that Joe Biden was armed with all the facts and figures he needed to respond to those that were posed to him. In his estimation, she was just so darn cute that he even said "she wiped the floor with Biden"! I kept thinking about how she was pretty much incoherent, had NO idea what she was even talking about and with her little wink, wink schtick she wasn't very professional nor was she even remotely Presidential.
Now that I've read this article Joe, it reminds me that Rush Limbaugh used to be the leading proponent of "the dumbing down of America" and railed against it at every opportunity. Now however, even HE is drinking the Kool-Aid 'cause doggone it, she's just so cute and perky, she's the best thing that's happened to America! Talk about getting "dumbed down", Limbaugh should be elected president of the "Dumb Down Society" because he's clearly lost any perceived intellect he thought he had!
I'm sorry, but I am embarrassed. Not just for her, but for all women of America who have thought about running for the highest offices in the land sometime in the future. Hillary Clinton's historic run had made such tremendous inroads in the election process that I was very proud to think we will eventually have a woman make it to the White House. Now, however, with John Mcain's cynical choice as his running mate
Sarah Palin, they have both done irreperable damage to the Womens' Movement and probably set it back at least 50 years.
John McCain is an egotist who thinks he should Rule America with the likes of Sarah Palin at his side. I guess it's okay to be "dumbed down" if it will benefit John McCain and the Republican party, but I''m hoping against hope that in November, we'll show 'em we're not THAT DUMB after all. - paintgrl, on 10/04/2008, -6/+66I think this sums it up.
FTA: The ultimate irony of Palin's rise is that it has occurred at a moment when Americans may finally have grown weary of pseudo-populism -- when intelligence, judgment, diligence and seriousness are once again valued, simply because we are in such deep trouble. We got into this mess because we elected a man who professed to despise elitism, which he detected in everyone whose opinions differed from his prejudices. That was George W. Bush, of course. Biden was too polite and restrained to say it, but the dumbing down is more of the same, too. - booksnmore4you, on 10/04/2008, -5/+55AM hate radio of the ilk of Hannity and Limbaugh has destroyed the Republican Party because it has destroyed conservatives.
- ginny56, on 10/04/2008, -9/+57No doubt the inmates are running the Republican asylum. Do they honesty think that people can't see through them? They will do what they always do, make up lies and get ugly. I honestly cannot believe the depths they will sink to, and that other Republicans are not calling them out for it.
- inactive, on 10/05/2008, -6/+45The only people left in the GOP are religious whackos, koolaid drinkers, and really old people.
- marike, on 10/05/2008, -3/+39We're six-pack Joe's and Jane's. We don't need no stinking knowledge.
- duckley, on 10/04/2008, -10/+44Palin: A celebration of ignorance.
- MsLaurel, on 10/04/2008, -1/+31Psychopaths believe in their own infallibility, and that is their achillies heel.
- cherwilco, on 10/05/2008, -5/+33"Why aren't more conservatives disgusted that their party nominated a person devoid of qualifications for the vice presidency (again)? "
they can never admit when they are wrong. dontcha know admitting your wrong about something is unpatriotic! - redcolumbine, on 10/04/2008, -5/+33The Republican Party has been a party of intelligent and acquisitive leaders, supported by undereducated followers who have been easily led with ideological smokescreens. Now that their working-class base is out of work and has time to investigate why, the GOP are trying to up the ante with "relatability." Unfortunately, this is not only insulting their base, but unmasking the previous insult of jingoism as cover fire for unmitigated greed. The house of cards is on its way down.
- LouiseCalabro, on 10/04/2008, -8/+34Intelligence is not elitism; America needs intelligent leaders for us to reclaim our position in the world, a position we gave up a couple of elections ago by voting for someone we could be comfortable having a beer with instead of someone we (and the rest of the world) could view as a a competent president of the United States.
Vote Obama/Biden! - inactive, on 10/05/2008, -3/+25I try not to be a completely biased sheep, but seriously, this bitch is incapable of running a McDonalds, let alone the greatest country in the world. I can understand that idiot conservatives exist, and that idiot liberals exist (case in point - my step-mom was laughing her ass off at Bill Maher making jokes about Sarah Palin. She then asked "Is she from Wisconsin? Her accent is funny.") but the fact that someone like this can be one stroke away from the presidency is ***** unbelievable. I'm too young to vote, but I seriously consider myself educated on politics. If you guys elect McCain/Stewardess-er-Palin, I PROMISE you that when I become of age, I will become president and eliminate social security.
- RipleyIsDead, on 10/05/2008, -1/+23Another one who has no idea what he's talking about. Do they create you people on an assembly line?
- buckrogers1965, on 10/05/2008, -1/+22I am a registered republican. I voted for McCain in 2000 primaries and Paul this year during the primaries. But voted for the democrats on election day. Why? Because Bush was a joke and the 2008 McCain has flip flopped on every issue. Picking someone as stupid and unelectable as Palin is just icing on the cake for me. I will more than likely vote for Obama just because at least he isn't a moron and seems to have a backbone. I don't agree with Obama's FISA vote, and absolutely loath every democrat in congress, but they are still better than the Republicans.
- peaceninja, on 10/05/2008, -1/+21@novaculus: can you elaborate? what the hell are you even talking about?
- wonkavsn, on 10/05/2008, -1/+21You're right. You know what we need? A Maverick. John McCain... now he's a Maverick. Didja know he was a POW? Well he was. He was certainly a POW. He's also a maverick.
- an0nymous, on 10/05/2008, -2/+21She's incurious, anti-intellectual, and anti-science. Between her "innocent" inquiries into book banning, her belief that dinosaurs and humans co-existed, and her belief that climate change exists but is not man-made, she can literally not be attacked enough.
If her ticket is elected she will be the most likely-to-be-"promoted" vice President in history. The combination of these two elements is terrifying. - inactive, on 10/05/2008, -0/+19You forget that it was Republicans who expanded the size of the federal government by 60% since Bush took office and ran us another 6 trillion dollars into debt.
- inactive, on 10/05/2008, -1/+20EfOff, it's the GOP that is spending all the money and running up huge deficits, douchewipe.
- sfanetti, on 10/05/2008, -1/+19Why is it that the Palin McCain supporters sound more and more like paranoid schizophrenics with every passing day? I am just flabbergasted at the level of complete stupidity demonstrated in Pitofdoom's post.
I would like to have a converation with Pitofdoom to try to figure out what he actually thinks about. Can this guy really be person? Or is this just some elaborate ironic farce?
If it is farce - cheers man - that's gold. - inactive, on 10/05/2008, -2/+19Bush was "elected." And WTF does Oprah have to do with this? Get *****.
- crownedgriffin, on 10/05/2008, -3/+20I'm a registered republican, and I cannot stand McCain or Palin, or the vast majority of the GOP elected. I really hope the lose this time around so they can realize just how much they suck ass.
- nickiank, on 10/05/2008, -5/+21Because that's not what happened.
- wonkavsn, on 10/05/2008, -3/+18Aren't you disgusted that McCain picked a running mate so devoid of experience right after slamming Obama for months on the basis that he lacked experience?
- hammyb, on 10/05/2008, -2/+17"Forget the politicians. The politicians are put there to give you the idea that you have freedom of choice . . . you don’t. You have no choice. You have owners. They own you. They own everything. They own all the important land. They own, and control the corporations. They’ve long since bought, and paid for the Senate, the Congress, the state houses, the city halls, they got the judges in their back pockets and they own all the big media companies, so they control just about all of the news and information you get to hear. They got you by the balls. They spend billions of dollars every year lobbying . . . lobbying, to get what they want . . . Well, we know what they want. They want more for themselves and less for everybody else, but I’ll tell you what they don’t want . . . they don’t want a population of citizens capable of critical thinking. They don’t want well informed, well educated people capable of critical thinking. They’re not interested in that . . . that doesn’t help them. That’s against their interests. That’s right. They don’t want people who are smart enough to sit around a kitchen table and think about how badly they’re getting ***** by a system that threw them overboard 30 *****' years ago. They don’t want that. You know what they want? They want obedient workers . . . Obedient workers, people who are just smart enough to run the machines and do the paperwork. And just dumb enough to passively accept all these increasingly ***** jobs with the lower pay, the longer hours, the reduced benefits, the end of overtime and vanishing pension that disappears the minute you go to collect it, and now they’re coming for your Social Security money. They want your *****' retirement money. They want it back so they can give it to their criminal friends on Wall Street, and you know something? They’ll get it . . . they’ll get it all from you sooner or later cause they own this *****' place. It’s a big club and you ain't in it."
- George Carlin - sk11, on 10/05/2008, -0/+14There are conservatives who criticise Palin, it's just that they do it in private:
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Lsf7qkwX04A
"Gimmicky," "cynical," "***** about narratives," are some of the terms THEY use to describe her nomination behind closed doors. - RipleyIsDead, on 10/05/2008, -0/+13He doesn't want to hear it, he still thinks that neo-cons are true conservatives.
- normlsparky, on 10/05/2008, -1/+14Efoff is proving the entire point of this article. he clearly fits into the "dumbed down" category, with the added bonus of being a racist. these qualities would indicate a strong possibility of being from a southern state (red state). is your neck red, Efoff? do you thump a bible on a regular basis? do you believe in the "right to work" as opposed to the right to earn a decent wage? watch fox news or listen to limbaugh much? many red state residents are infected with this mental impairment, which is why the GOP sees them as easy targets.
- RSMiller, on 10/04/2008, -1/+14What is the -60 trillion crap you have been posting? Maybe take what is left of your hubris and check factcheck.org and politifact.com. If you feel adventurous take a look at mccainfactcheck.com and palinfactcheck.com. After that come back and comment.
- buckrogers1965, on 10/05/2008, -0/+13So borrow and spend so that your kids have to pay for your excess is patriotic?
- inactive, on 10/05/2008, -2/+15You need to learn to control yourself, EfOff.
- whit4brains, on 10/05/2008, -2/+14Palin doesn't even know what an Achille's heel is. That is why she didn't answer the question correctly and started rambling her maverick crap.
- RhoVisions, on 10/05/2008, -3/+15Not to mention I've never heard anyone except republicans refer to Obama as perfect or as a messiah.
- thegrantman, on 10/05/2008, -2/+14I take exception to this article in that it suggests the break between conservatives and the GOP is relatively new.I am a conservative and have never had anything to do with the GOP.
Here are the actual core beliefs:
1.Personal,social, and fiscal responsibility.
2.A small,representational government.
3.A "walk softly but carry a big stick"philosophy.
4.A belief that with every freedom comes responsibilty.
5.Education and industry. - inactive, on 10/05/2008, -2/+13omamessiah? are you trying to combine the words omam and messiah? who the ***** is omam?
- elipabst, on 10/05/2008, -0/+11You need to get your memes straight. Are we evil democratic capitalists now or are we still socialists?
- will2000, on 10/05/2008, -5/+16I do...and without a doubt he is more qualified than caribou barbie.
- Murdats, on 10/05/2008, -0/+111. what? that makes no sense, and if you are talking about corruption are you trying to say the republicans are all squeaky clean? wait, isnt your own VP candidate trying to halt investigations? sounds like interfering with the legal process for personal gain to me, ie. corruption
2.you honestly think there is an ounce of intelligence in those candidates? wait you seem to redefining words, to you intelligence means hubris, and mentally diminished means intelligent.
3. right, you want to piss off the rest of the world, I wonder why there are terrorists then, and why they want to attack you. are you wanting to reduce your allies, are you wanting more americans to die through being an internationally hostile country? do you hate people of other races so much you want americans to die just so you can kill them?
4. who are you talking about there, you seem to be supporting mccain but then you insult him.
5. didnt you just state "evil capitalists", and how is that bush capitalism working out for you, you do mccain votes the same as bush, so bush capitalism is mccain capitalism. and how about looking at some heavily socialist countries that are doing well, are the highest in population satisfaction, have large gdp's per capita and are bearing the brunt of the american created economic crisis, but it is still pissing them off, thats what you want right?
6. once again you seem to be criticising mccain, he is the one with the money and power right? and playing politics as a popularity contest instead of using honour and declaring wise policies. - mediaphile, on 10/04/2008, -1/+12Why do you write in breaks
like a prose poem?
And what -60 trillion do you speak of? The current national debt is $10 trillion, the highest it's been in 53 years, and this has been under a two term Republican occupation of the White House.
Regardless of whatever you're referring to, intelligence is still something we need in the chief officer of this nation, specifically intelligence with regards to the economy. - inactive, on 10/05/2008, -2/+13"And as for ID vs evolution, Shouldnt we teach our kids to look at all possible theories? make them use critical thinking to let them determine what is the most plausible theory."
Um, no. Evolution is a valid scientific theory. Intelligent Design creationism is religion. ID creationism does not belong anywhere near an institution of education. Children in Biology 101 are in no position be deciding which one is the "most plausible theory." They lack the training and the experience in science to be able to make that distinction. Creationism is ***** and the religious know this, which is why they're trying to force it on kids at a younger age so that it'll seem more plausible to them later in life. - mediaphile, on 10/04/2008, -1/+11Intelligence can only be demonstrated or not, but it's much easier to spot when one lacks intelligence than when one possesses it. It's no secret that Palin lacks that particular trait.
And what -60 trillion are you referring to? - enki25, on 10/05/2008, -0/+10Independent country? Holy ***** you are a dumb *****. Alaska is the 2nd or 3rd highest recipient of federal funding. Just because it's all far away up there doesn't make it independent. But hey, what do facts matter to Palin supporters anyway? You just keep supporting Bible Spice if it gives you a boner.
- VicHislop, on 10/05/2008, -3/+13What are you talking about? 18 million people across the country nominated Obama through their votes.
- RipleyIsDead, on 10/05/2008, -1/+11I hope you lost most of your wealth in the stock market. I really do.
- doublefelix, on 10/05/2008, -3/+13Why aren't you concerned that the John McCain you'll be voting for in November is the bi-polar opposite of the pre 2006 'Maverick'? Why aren't you concerned that he voted with Bush 92% of the time this year and Bush's policies have driven this country morally, constitutionally, and economically into the ground so hard they've left a crater that will take years, if not decades to fill in?
- RhoVisions, on 10/05/2008, -1/+11Again... executive experience of what? The 47th most populated state in the nation?
And putting aside whether that is experience or not, what has her experience taught her? Her husband acts as the second governor. She wants raped women to pay for their rape kits. She wants to ban books. She wants Intelligent Design taught alongside evolution (whether you believe in it or not, Intelligent Design is a religious concept, it has no scientific backing).
Sorry, if that's executive experience, give me an idiot. Other then McCain. - HumanNouveau, on 10/05/2008, -4/+14Yes. Massively so.
