- drum_bum, on 10/12/2007, -2/+37We're going to keep making this an issue until it is solved. So until then you better get ready to sit through it. It's never ridiculous when our entire democracy is on the line, never.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16By now anyone paying attention to this knows what is going on. The only question in our minds is how long will it be before the American people revolt against this. The problem here is that, in the past, when Americans REALLY got PO'ed they'd march off to the polls to make a change. What happens when that avenue is gone?
Looking at this whole thing from 30,000 feet we have one of two possibilities:
1) Election officials, Diebold, oversight committees, etc are utter morons.
2) This is a concerted effort to undermine the already atrophied desire for Americans to vote.
Neither one is comforting but at least #1 can be fixed if some competent people are assigned to clean up this mess. #2 is really chilling and i prefer to not even think about it. - martalli, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15"Speaking of revolt, what happens if no one in America votes? Not going to happen, I know, but what if not a single person voted? What would happen then?"
Diebold probably accounted for that...in the event that no one votes, the machine returns two votes for the republican, one vote for the democrat. - martalli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Then why comment on political articles?
- martalli, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12"...i would pay to control who was elected..."
but can you outbid Halliburton? - Highfinance, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10"...i would pay to control who was elected..."
Or the Saudi Royal family? - Derfus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8diebold ceo is a heavy contributor to the GOP
no wonder where the votes are going... - ardenr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9The founders of the Constitution created the elected Congress system because there was no way that everybody who wanted to vote on an issue would be able to do so in the era of horse-delivered post... That system has now failed, as they foretold. No member of congress has the ability to read every bill, and things get snuck in all the time i.e. pork barrel funds etc. Now it has been proven that we can't even be sure that the people we elect are the ones who get the job.
With that in mind, many people (including, worryingly, GWB) have been looking at voting online... To make things brief, there are serious pitfalls here. Apart from the very real possibility of attacks being made to control computers, there is the danger of coercibility, for example someone holding a gun to your head in your own home to make you vote. Outside of a public polling place, and without strict secrecy, this is a real fear.
Then there are the worries about accessibility, etc.
So... we need a public place AND secrecy, wide-spread access, and a safe vote-counting mechanism. Ever hear of an ATM? People are looking at this option as well. Now I don't know about you, but I live in Ireland and we have had HUGE banking scandals in recent years. It'll be a cold day in hell before I trust my vote to a bank.
If anyone isn't depressed by this... Could you tell me why? I'd love to hear your thoughts on new ways to vote. - ZenMojo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Welcome to the collusion between corporate and government interests, aka, third-degree fascism.
It's a little disturbing to say the least that not only are there problems, and not only do we all know that these problems exist, and not only can these problems be verifiably proven, but that politicians are pretending that we are stupid and have been ignoring these problems. - McShaken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8This is a serious problem, even HBO is getting involved. My son and I just watched "Hacking Democracy" on HBO and it's worth watching. Here's a few links to more info:

I'll repeat it, (and I hope you repeat it)
You must see http://www.youneed2see.com/Political/51/Diebold_vote_hack_roundup for a bunch of videos of diebold scandals. - Meadow113, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9GOOD
- ComputerDudes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Finally PAYBACK.
No, really I hope they get caught and some "stupid" Republican demands and gets a full investigation and then maybe everyone will WAKE UP and figure out these machines are the 21st century version of stuffing the ballot box. It happens a lot. It always has, and as long as there is money to be made in politics someone will try to rig elections. Get the money out of the equation and we might actually get some honest people in office. - damonlab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5How how getting a proposal on the ballot in your state to use open source, paper trail validated, under public scrutiny, electronic voting machines? Oh, wait...
- consonance, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8When it happens, no one will say we didn't see it coming.
- martalli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Got a link or documentation on that?
- macpatrick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4GoTV Network News (TV news on your cell phone) has produced an excellent investigative series on this. Eye-opening and it's available online for free:
http://gotvnetworks.one.revver.com/collection/42547 - w0rd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Considering that we haven't done anything about it, they may be right...
- potlucktechn9ne, on 10/12/2007, -15/+19How many Diebold "scandals" are we going to have to sit through? This is absolutely rediculous. You should also see http://www.youneed2see.com/Political/51/Diebold_vote_hack_roundup for a bunch of videos of diebold scandals.
- Meadow113, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5it will apparently come down to who can hack the best this time unfortunately.
- ComputerDudes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4But the government would pay Diebolt to setup the website and we would have the same problem.
- lopla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4well, who cares? no one does ok that's not entirely true, maybe 0.0001% of the U.S. population if you want to get pedantic. Now reality TV, THAT's what is important, got it? All this other stuff meh sooooooooo what, see you later I gotta go dose up on paxil.
-Your Typical American - neozeed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3sure, ill be sure to keep that in mind like the 2004, 2002, & 2000 riots.
Must See TeeVee! - ardenr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Interesting start though. Also, the issues of voter coercion and vote selling remain, plus there is a large proportion of the US with no internet access. Also, with the general hackability of computers, what's to stop hackers from using keylogs? I'm a little out of my depth here, but very interested.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4then it goes to the House...
- neozeed, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Here is an idea, lets put it to a vote!
Right this way to the diebolds! - ardos, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Someone should get hold of that software and sell it on ebay i would pay to control who was elected and i am sure there are other people that would show me the money....
- bloomanchoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2power to the people would be nice... wouldn't it.
- sinembarg0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@ drum bum
I think the parent is not saying that it's annoying, he's saying that what will it take for Diebold to no longer be trusted, for their voting machines to no longer be used. - bloomanchoo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Speaking of revolt, what happens if everyone in America votes? Not going to happen, I know, but what if every single person voted? What would happen then?
- wstrucke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2how about the federal government sets up a kerberos server and lets everyone log in with their SSN and vote online. i think you'd see a massive increase in voting if you could do it from your home computer over an SSL site.

Bush Administration Quietly Plans NAFTA Super Highway
by Jerome R. Corsi
Posted Jun 12, 2006
Quietly but systematically, the Bush Administration is advancing the plan to build a huge NAFTA Super Highway, four football-fields-wide, through the heart of the U.S. along Interstate 35, from the Mexican border at Laredo, Tex., to the Canadian border north of Duluth, Minn.
Once complete, the new road will allow containers from the Far East to enter the United States through the Mexican port of Lazaro Cardenas, bypassing the Longshoreman's Union in the process. The Mexican trucks, without the involvement of the Teamsters Union, will drive on what will be the nation's most modern highway straight into the heart of America. The Mexican trucks will cross border in FAST lanes, checked only electronically by the new "SENTRI" system. The first customs stop will be a Mexican customs office in Kansas City, their new Smart Port complex, a facility being built for Mexico at a cost of $3 million to the U.S. taxpayers in Kansas City.
As incredible as this plan may seem to some readers, the first Trans-Texas Corridor segment of the NAFTA Super Highway is ready to begin construction next year. Various U.S. government agencies, dozens of state agencies, and scores of private NGOs (non-governmental organizations) have been working behind the scenes to create the NAFTA Super Highway, despite the lack of comment on the plan by President Bush. The American public is largely asleep to this key piece of the coming " North American Union" that government planners in the new trilateral region of United States, Canada and Mexico are about to drive into reality.
PLEASE go to the article itself and 'DIGG' it to the top of the pile!!!!
