I see the author's Athens vs. Syracuse and raise you WWII Germany. Or the Crusades. Because everyone knows that ruthlessness is all you need and can't possibly backfire.
And Vietnam. We simply didn't burn enough villages. If we'd killed them all, then it'd have been a useful victory. But we didn't, so we're now ruled by our punji-stick overlords.
