The Significance of Marriage
pinksheepofthefamily.com — Is the word "marriage" all that important? Why can't same-gender couples be happy with "civil unions"? Personally, morally, spiritually speaking the word “marriage” is just a word. So it holds no intrinsic power. Love is the cord that binds a couple together. However, from a business man’s perspective it is very powerful.

- Minarchian, on 05/25/2008, -1/+1Why is it that these so-called "conservatives" want government to get involved? (by wanting an Amendment saying marriage is only between one man and one woman) And why it that gays want government to force gay marriage on churches? The government really has no authority over the church to do this. So their only recourse is to get the government to stop discriminating against them.
Marriage is a religious ceremony, recognized by the State. It is not a State ceremony, sanctified by the church.
My opinion is that the State has no authority to distinguish the make-up of a marriage. That it's only function in this issue is to apply law equally across the board.
So if a gay couple finds a church that will marry them, then the State can only certify that marriage and give it the same legal status as any other marriage. Even calling it "marriage". The State must be gender blind, just as it must be racially blind, or it will discriminate and deny equal protection, as the Constitution dictates.
California passed a "Marriage referendum" making marriage only between one man and one woman. Referendums can not over-ride the Constitution, State or Federal. Only an Amendment to the Constitution can make the change, and the judges ruled accordingly. But in my mind an Amendment would open the flood gates of the Government getting involved in religious affairs, and I doubt the gay community really wants that either. I feel the gays should be fighting to be treated fairly and equally by government, not taking charge of religious institutions, but the government institutions that are in their way.- Surferess, on 05/25/2008, -0/+1Didn't the Cali situation just get changed last week?
- shawngreg, on 05/25/2008, -0/+1About a week and a half ago, the Supreme Court of California declared that banning same-gender marriage was Unconstitutional.
Therefore, they will now be legal in that state. Immediately famous gays and lesbians started announcing they would get legally married. (Ellen DeGeneres, for example.) It's very exciting news.
As California goes...so goes the rest of the U.S.
