- zombiecarlin, on 08/20/2008, -8/+98I don't hear the retards complaining, if they are then they aren't making any sense.
- YancyFryJr, on 08/20/2008, -5/+91Christ, get a sense of humor. In the context of the film, the word was used to mock Hollywood's obsession with actors portraying the "mentally handicapped" (or whatever the politically correct buzzword is these days), not to insult people.
The conversation in question was hilarious in the film, and people that get offended by this kind of ***** are obviously reaching. Why is everyone so God damn paranoid that everyone is out to insult them? - daRoach, on 08/20/2008, -3/+77I think they're more upset that he went FULL retard.
- TheKingInYellow, on 08/19/2008, -7/+71well, most people in my generation use the word "retard" for just about everything so i see nothing wrong with it's use in any context.
- Quetez23, on 08/20/2008, -2/+44 I find it funny we live in a world where "freespeech" is all fine and good until somebody says something that SOMEBODY will be offended by.
- StealthyMong, on 08/20/2008, -1/+43you never go full retard
- btschul, on 08/20/2008, -3/+39Get the ***** over it. It's a comedy, they are poking fun, it's not mean spirited or anything. You have to be able to laugh stuff like that off.
- GiJoeBob, on 08/20/2008, -2/+33Everyone seems so eager to be insulted and "oppressed" these days.
- andypop481, on 08/20/2008, -1/+24P-P-P-Please s-s-s-stop muh-muh-muh-making fun of me!
I'm gonna get buried if no one here has seen the movie. - hellsing47, on 08/20/2008, -1/+21"You don't call retarded people retards. It's bad taste. You call your friends retards when they are acting retarded."
-Michael Scott - BoneStamp, on 08/20/2008, -2/+21I actually don't think there is anything wrong with this. I know it's not polite to call people this, but it is technically correct. In fact, I got in trouble for using the word "retarded" in a meeting once. I said "the data flow was being retarded by the router", which is a totally acceptable use of the word. Later, my co-worker was like, "that's offensive to people who are mentally challenged." I was like, "Retard means 'a slowing down or hindrance'... kind of like retarder brakes in a semi-truck. That's why they call mentally challenged people retarded, because their thinking is retarded (slowed down) by something in their brain." I called her retard for the rest of the day and she got really pissed!
- ChuckIT, on 08/20/2008, -2/+21and you're comment doesn't make any sense.
- babcat, on 08/20/2008, -2/+19Of course. Being oppressed, challenged, or a minority can get you all kinds of special benefits.
- cambob76, on 08/20/2008, -4/+20There is no controversy as long as you don't go "full retard". If you do go "full retard", there's no going back!
Seriously though, the whole theatre was laughing it's ass off because of Ben Stiller's character's portrayal of a 'retard' (much more than because he played an actor trying to get an Oscar by playing a 'retard'). They use the term 'retard' which, in my parts, is NOT a nice way of saying mentally handicapped. I don't think it was at all a sensitive portrayal of the mentally handicapped, yet I was laughing my ass off too. Bottom line, I think most people are guilty of finding 'inappropriate' things funny but know when to take things seriously... so get over it you retard.
And the whole black thing? ***** HILARIOUS! Stop being so bloody sensitive! - oldhick, on 08/20/2008, -0/+16No one is insulting retards. We're just insulting people who act retarded.
Now on a serious note, what are you talking about? Who got "raided" who's lives were ruined? - BXRWXR, on 08/20/2008, -5/+18Let's get retarded,
let's get retarded in here. - Wonderama, on 08/20/2008, -0/+12Claiming offense or victimhood is a sure fire passive-aggressive way to gain advantage.
- deadmoo, on 08/20/2008, -2/+13You refer to them as retarded?
- Cirrius, on 08/20/2008, -2/+13Your use of all caps on a word is intolerable. From this point on I boycott all of your posts, and I will be very vocal to all of my important friends to also boycott this flagrant use of caps lock/shift held down. I know people. I have a voice and you can't stop it. There are people out there whose caps lock key is broken and they always have to type this way. Do you have any idea how much you are hurting them with your flagrant mockery? I've contacted the President of the BCLRGA (Broken Cap Locks Rights Group of America) with a copy of this post and he was "gravely offended", he came out of your post feeling assaulted and suffered the "humiliation" of "good and decent human beings" that share the BCL malady. This problem is real, the symptoms are real...
GOOD LORD I CAN GO ON ALL DAY MAKING UP THIS NONSENSE!
These guys have a fun job. - seabass10, on 08/20/2008, -0/+10ask sean penn.
- theragu40, on 08/20/2008, -0/+10Trust me dude, it was just as dumb the second time around.
- wizbor, on 08/20/2008, -4/+13This thread is retarded
- robinthehood, on 08/20/2008, -2/+11cough. DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS. cough.
Now that was a movie that, were I a dirty, angry retard, I would be really angry about. - deadmoo, on 08/20/2008, -2/+11Yes, everything is either gay, retarded, or both.
- ReidFleming, on 08/20/2008, -2/+11Well, they are complaining and there have been groups of the mentally-challenged making the rounds on the morning news shows. The problem is, unfortunately, that they seem to not understand *why* they shouldn't be offended. If you are pointing out the hypocrisy and shallowness of this Hollywood archetype, you must use the word and portray it. It is certainly sad that they *are* offended but it is specifically their handicap that prevents them from understanding that they shouldn't be.
The non-challenged offended are simply idiots (no offense to idiots). - Gamer2k4, on 08/20/2008, -1/+8Who cares? I don't say "a person with athletic abilities"; I say "an athlete". Likewise, I don't say "a person with mental retardation"; I say "a retard".
"Oh, but Gamer! The word "retard" sounds so derogatory!"
That's because it IS derogatory. It's not a GOOD thing to be mentally challenged. And if you really want disabled people (that's a whole new can of worms: the ridiculous "disabled people" vs "people with disabilities" distinction) to be treated the same as other people, then don't use different terms to describe them. They're just as human as anyone else? Good, then treat them that way. Call an athlete an athlete and a retard a retard. - bundwallah, on 08/20/2008, -2/+9Reminds me of a Monty Python skit. "Help Help..I'm being oppressed!!"
- WiretapStudios, on 08/20/2008, -0/+7There are a lot of battles to fight for the handicapped. This isn't one of them.
- babcat, on 08/20/2008, -2/+9I don't care to see this movie, but the only reason I want to see it is because the politically correct nutcases do not want me to.
- PDF84, on 08/20/2008, -3/+10"You never go full retard!!"
- Herolint, on 08/20/2008, -0/+7No, if you laughed at "White Girls" you aren't a racist, you're retarded.
- JustLoren, on 08/20/2008, -0/+7Just ask Leeroy how raids ruin lives.
- robdiggity, on 08/20/2008, -0/+7HUH?!? Whutchoo mean, "most people?"
- WiretapStudios, on 08/20/2008, -2/+9My girlfriend works with mentally handicapped people and uses the word retarded AND would think it's funny in the movie. Some people just have too much free time and project their own insecurities onto the handicapped or whatever other cause (animals / abortions / troubled mimes ).
- PhilMoskowitz, on 08/20/2008, -1/+8No, you can't have a controversy. Not yours.
- AmericanGunner, on 08/20/2008, -2/+9Oh but they can make 'White Girls' and well give them $50 million guilty dollars because we feel obligated to laugh or were racist.
- bills534, on 08/20/2008, -1/+7FTA: "I'm not here to defend the term; on the contrary, it gives me a twitch just to type it."
That guy is retarded for twitching when he types retard - deadmoo, on 08/20/2008, -0/+6That is retarded.
- Tochi, on 08/20/2008, -1/+7"Oh! Come and see the violence inherent in the system! Help! Help! I'm being repressed!"
- BoneStamp, on 08/20/2008, -0/+6If you're free to say what you want, then other people are free to say they're offended... it doesn't mean that one of you is right or wrong. I think in this case, it's a silly comedy and most people get that and they're not going to be offended, but some will and those people probably aren't the right audience for this movie anyway... so it doesn't matter.
- diggit83, on 08/20/2008, -1/+7The movie was one of the funniest ive ever seen. Robert Downy JR was HYSTERICAL. If you can watch the movie and not get what they were going for with the retard bit, then you are probably a retard.
***** funny go watch it if you haven't. - longbraker, on 08/20/2008, -0/+6he went full retard, went home empty-handed.
- towjam, on 08/20/2008, -1/+6you ma-ma-ma-make me happy
- GeorgeStone2, on 08/20/2008, -3/+8They do, but they forget 2 seconds later.
In a way they're a lot like goldfish. - loneBoat, on 08/20/2008, -1/+6By saying that _everyone_ seems so eager to be insulted, you are making a statement about me. I am offended about that. You are oppressing the entire human race, of which I am a member.
- JCH897, on 08/20/2008, -0/+5Reminds me of that Nick Swardson skit where he talks about a woman who was offended by his use of the word.
Woman: I'm upset that you used that word. My son is retarded.
Nick: Well, you're the one who just called your son a retard. - EmmanuelGoldstn, on 08/20/2008, -0/+5Hey, at least you didn't say the data flow was niggardly.
- StanleyKoolPrik, on 08/20/2008, -1/+6You can't be sued for being offensive in America, you retard.
- dafragsta, on 08/20/2008, -1/+6politically correctness is a cancer on society. Moreover, it's far more divisive with it's sense of entitlement with regard to indignation at politically incorrect things. ***** political correctness. I'm surprised people demand it. The very nature of being politically correct is somewhat condescending and drawing attention to the differences that separate people in the first place.
- Herolint, on 08/20/2008, -0/+5@TheKingInYellow
I completely agree. I think people who get offended over every little thing, especially when it is intended as humor, need to grow a pair, slap on a cup, and stop being such nancies. -
