- KhanneaSuntzu, on 10/23/2007, -6/+55"what remains of our country's good name" ... HAH! Come visit Europe and listen what europeans think of this socalled good name. Don't ask around to widely, or claim you voted for the bastard, or you might end up hospitalized. In other words; the US is loathed and despised. It'll take you a generation or more to clean up that damage.
Most americans are clueless how long this Bush era will be remembered and how they will average americans be hated for "just standing by". What happened is REALLY serious, far more evil than most americans seem to realise. Holy ***** people, wake up. - skihigh2002, on 10/20/2007, -11/+53I was guided to this article by the Huff Post. This article is both enlightening and depressing at the same time. Just this morning I remarked to my lover that I believe there is nothing I can do except stand idly by as this country destroys itself. 2007 has been an enlightening year thus far... When the Dems took over in January I truly believed they would right this sinking ship of a country. But they have not. We have traded evil corporate Republicans for evil corporate Democrats.
Now, we hear the drumbeat for another war in another Middle Eastern country--know of any good homes for sale in Canada? - inactive, on 10/25/2007, -3/+36I dunno... I mean, we write letters, we protest, we vote for people who promise to end this, and yet, we get nowhere. What are we supposed to do, short of a full-blown revolution? 'Cause I can tell you right now, it ain't gonna happen. People are too well-off. For the most part, people are happy and content with their lot in life, certainly enough so to turn a blind eye to things like this.
And I mean, I have no clue what to do. It is hard to make a case for why we need something as drastic as a revolution when things are going so well, on the whole. Personally, I'd just love to get all of those ***** out of office - I'm strongly of the opinion that the only good politician is a dead politician. - ccheath, on 10/20/2007, -6/+36My respect for Frank Rich has greatly increased due to how he sources his article with links. When has the 'MSM' done that recently?
- archimago42, on 10/20/2007, -2/+25He didn't say Bush was Hitler. He compared the Gustapo's tactics to ours and he was right, they are very similar. He is not comparing the SS to our army or anything like that, he is saying:
1. we are purposely torturing people
2. we claim we don't believe in torture and don't allow others to do it
3. we are all aware it is happening but do nothing to stop it
Those three points were exactly the same in Nazi Germany. I don't see him taking it any farther than that. - thall, on 10/20/2007, -2/+24There are corporate left-wing and corporate right-wing in Canada too
- arcangelgabriel, on 10/20/2007, -2/+19This is not the country I fought for, bled for and watched comrades die for.
Sometimes I just sit back and want to cry. - archimago42, on 10/20/2007, -2/+17Nazi Germany was for Fascism what the French revolution was for popular revolutions. This being a spot on perfect example of how it happens. It is extraordinarily well documented and well researched and the Germans don't cover it up. They are probably the only country I can think of that actually takes responsibility and themselves educate people on what happened when they themselves are the guilty party. No one thinks they are the only people who ever did anything wrong, it is simply a damn good example of the dangers of Fascist behavior.
- sodoh, on 10/20/2007, -1/+16"Most americans are clueless how long this Bush era will be remembered"
Well your great-grandchildren will still be paying for debt Bush has created. So at least 3-4 generations. - archimago42, on 10/20/2007, -1/+14Americans must die in large numbers for anyone in the country to care at all. This isn't just Americans either, everyone culture behaves in basically the same way. When lots of your own people die and you see no benefits from it you get angry. Anything else isn't enough. Not depression (unless enough people starve), not genocide(unless it is your own extermination), and certainly not moral issues like the torturing of your "enemies"(citizens or not). In this way human societies are cold and mathmatical. Not enough of our own troops have died in Iraq for the whole society to threaten to stop functioning in order to stop the war.
That is what it takes. Protest on such a scale that it disrupts the whole country. There has not been enough American blood for that to happen. - chase001, on 10/20/2007, -3/+16OK maybe America should be compared to Mussolini's Italy. Fascism had nothing to do with rounding up the Jews, gays and gypsies. Fascism is a merger of corporate and government interests at the expense of the people.
- hambend, on 10/20/2007, -7/+19You know what? I think it's time to put Godwin's law to rest. Maybe it was useful once, back when AOLers first hit the internet, but these days it's possible to have a disagreement on the internet without it degenerating into a total flamewar.
Now, America is far from the next Nazi Germany. The two nations are different in many ways. But there are many similarities to be drawn (in this case the widespread complacency which allows the ruling class to pursue their aggressive foreign policy). Maybe you'll disagree, but Godwin's law amounts to a refusal to recognize or even discuss those kinds of similarity. A refusal, in fact, to take heed of some of the most poignant and expensive lessons learned in all of history. - chase001, on 10/20/2007, -3/+15Fox News: We don't need no stinking sources if we just say...
"There are those that say..."
"Some people are saying..." - quakerob, on 10/20/2007, -1/+12As an Australian I'd have to agree
Pre-emptive war, torture, detention without trial, war profiteering and the massacre of civilians is antithetical to the Australian notion of " a fair go".
We should distance ourselves from any Governments that persue these activities as a matter of policy (directly and indirectly).
With the Federal Election coming up on Nov 24 a change in government will see Australian troops withdrawn from the middle east in the short term and the dissolution of the ANZAC treaty in the long term (hopefully). - hiphoc, on 10/25/2007, -4/+15Thats the goal to make you feel impotent. The best you can do is stop the circle jerk. I am not speaking about what u do with your "lover". But more iike educating people outside your group of influence. People who are in the military, their famileis, cops, beurocrats. They are the system. Lots of people feel helpless. Biggest thing you can do is work to expose the Federal Reserve. The families that own the Fed are making money off this war. Expose the Fed and you kill the beast.
- chase001, on 10/20/2007, -0/+9Creeping Fascism
- Parthymon, on 10/20/2007, -0/+9I've got to say that, republican or democrat, you've GOT to wish we could go back to when the president was needed help defining "sexual relation" instead of ***** "torture."
- inactive, on 10/20/2007, -5/+14"Yes...there is corruption on both sides, that's a fact of life and it exists in every society and always has."
That's a pathetic cop-out. - bdbr, on 10/17/2007, -0/+9Its true, he lied about getting a blowjob. He should have instead been torturing people and illegally wiretapping Americans. Then he probably wouldn't have been impeached. Because lying about a blowjob is way worse than that, right?
- ChessPieceFace, on 10/20/2007, -1/+9"It's one thing to torture people who are actually guilty of plotting some serious *****" and you know this how? Just because the government says so?
- Velnich, on 10/20/2007, -1/+9Jeez, I'm Canadian and that article made me feel shame for not doing more to stop the war machine.
- inactive, on 10/20/2007, -0/+8The Nazis are just the most familiar example to most Americans these days. You could draw an analogy to Mussolini or Stalin but people just aren't as aware of the actual history of those events.
- wakananda, on 10/20/2007, -1/+9Good enough for me.
What do we name this beast that is going through the wallet on our nightstand, chewing on the bones of our children and belching up fragments of the Constitution? First and foremost, we must see that it has a correct and proper name. Shall we synchronize our ***** watches? - Evermin7, on 10/20/2007, -0/+7Spitting crap back is not doing anything either...
- SargedeathXmode, on 10/20/2007, -1/+8well, although we protest, we don't quite protest loud enough for that to be effective... and voting, well, that really gets nowhere... there are a lot more factors to changing policymaking than just changing the policymakers...
the only time that citizens ended a war by protesting was MASSIVE protests on a daily basis... so far, all i see are a bunch of people doing occasional honk your horn protesting once in a while and a few people going on tv and saying how much they supported the war and now they absolutely hate it... that is not going to end a multi-billion, if not trillion, dollar war for oil... the last time citizens ended it, it was mass protesting across the nation over a paranoia war... it's going to take a lot more than just standing there and saying, i voted, i support protesting, i give up...
so yes, people are too well off to care... unless most of the families in the US suffer a personal loss (which will only occur if there is a large scale draft) , it's just as if normal life goes on... - grrrrrrrrrrrrrr, on 10/20/2007, -1/+8Supplemental: Hitler's speech to the Reichstag on December 11, 1941 declaring war against the United States [snip]: "The Governments of the U.S.A. and of England have therefore resisted, not only now but also for all time, every just understanding meant to bring about a better New Order in the world." http://www.sweetliberty.org/issues/wars/hitler.htm
- sodoh, on 10/20/2007, -2/+9Intresting read. Shows an interesting parallel between Bush and Clinton.
Clinton didn't lie about having Sexual relations. He asked the people asking the questions "what is sexual relations", they defined it as straight sex. This Clinton didn't do so could say he didn't have sexual relations.
Now to Bush who redefines what "Torture" is so he can claim the USA doesn't torture people, despite numerous documented instances of torture, kidnapping, renditions.
Maybe people need to start asking straighter questions. Either way, it is really about time the US population got off their asses and did something about the nutter behind the wheel. - inactive, on 10/20/2007, -0/+7Yeah, and that was also during the Jim Crow era in the USA. Fascism doesn't have an exclusive claim to racism. (Although, fascism is helped by the perception of an external racist threat... cf. Muslims)
- lnf69, on 10/20/2007, -0/+6***** you with your "You People" *****. You're being stupid.
The article is not saying Bush=Hitler
IT IS SAYING PEOPLE LIKE YOU ARE LIKE THE GERMAN PEOPLE UNDER NAZI GERMANY.
Here's the equation for better understanding:
eagles2k3=people who blindly accept orders from above without questioning them.
note to the rest. sorry about the CAPs but this person is a bit hard of hearing. - BlacklabelSAR, on 10/20/2007, -0/+6Wrong. What is wrong with this country is that people like yourself are backwards. For starters, you attack the messenger instead of countering the message. See Ad Hominem. Second, this country has a lot of people that feel superior to the rest of the world and at the same time claim to worship Jesus.
- wakananda, on 10/20/2007, -0/+6The colonists that opposed the British were a minority. The majority were loyalists. The loyalists stayed home. The Founding Fathers, well - they didn't "protest."
Don't forget how poorly equipped they were. All the chance they had was riding on their determination. - Evermin7, on 10/20/2007, -0/+6You hate.....try love...I hear good things...
- joebrender, on 10/20/2007, -1/+7I remember feeling that maybe we should impeach Clinton for lying under oath (Yes, I'm a Republican). How can anyone in sane mind not support Impeaching Bush for lying, torture, and corruption. He has sullied our reputation around the world, squandered the lives of our brave soldiers, and emptied our treasury. Impeach Cheney too and now we have our first female president.
- flygirl62, on 10/20/2007, -0/+5It exists only as long as *we* allow it to exist. As long as we have elections, and as long as we have the (fading) capability to ignore/work-around the Republicrat machine, "*we* the people" of the US can solve the problem. What we need to do is get someone who will *sincerely* execute the jobs they are elected to.
The real problem is, as my father puts it when we have phone calls where this subject comes up, "their bellies are full." As the Romans used to say, all governments need to do to keep people from revolting is "bread and circuses." As long as they are fed and entertained, people are mostly apathetic toward government --- look at what percentage of people vote. Sure, for some of them it's "no good choices," but a lot just have no *reason* to vote. - inactive, on 10/20/2007, -0/+5If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and swims like a duck, it's a duck!!!! Bush acts like a Nazi, acts upon polices that are PRECISELY like Hilter's. Bush IS a *****' Nazi. The right wing has STILL failed to refute an argument, because, like Nazis, they would rather bully their opposition. ***** the GOP! I hope all the lousy bastard rot in hell.
- inactive, on 10/20/2007, -1/+6And that's tragic! They're the ones who SOULD go to Europe to learn the recent history FOX news won't tell or lies about. There is a name for delusion --insanity. Carl Jung believed that as much as thirty percent of every population was incipient psychos. That percentage must be twice that high in America, where it is STILL believed that the US leads the world in technology. As of Bush, the US trails in almost EVERY category. The US is now propped up economically by the rest of the world and its not because they love us. They don't! Under Bush, the US journey into third world status is complete.
- tao52nyc, on 10/20/2007, -0/+5Well, the people who pretend to run this country now ARE indeed Fascists by definition...and if that is so, and you also are right, then sooner or later those guys will start rounding up somebody...and the "good Germans" among our own volk will turn a blind eye.
- meason, on 10/20/2007, -4/+9Honestly I'm getting tired of hearing about all the bad things going on every day because nobody has the guts or desire to do anything about it. The Democrats are scared to death of George Bush and they are never going to get anything accomplished. Either do something about it or drop it and move on because what good are you doing? What are you changing by articles like this? Not a thing. Cause an action or move on.
- madpie, on 10/20/2007, -0/+5ccheath I feel the same way. I was reading his column and going "wow, are these actual links to useful information??" It's so rare that the MSM does that, but it's really a helpful thing to do. Definitely one area where bloggers have helped the MSM to move forward.
- inactive, on 10/20/2007, -0/+5Yeah, and the British weren't exactly killing a lot of Americans before the Revolution, either. The British just imposed a tax - which was far lower than the tax we pay to the government now. The issue then (and now) wasn't so much the tax, but taxation without representation. I suppose you could make the argument that the government doesn't represent us now either (As an aside - the tax was being used to fund a British war). It's more difficult to see perhaps, because the government is nominally American. However, the federal government rules over the citizenry and the states with no more regard to their interests than the British crown did in the 1700's.
- repran, on 10/20/2007, -2/+7Anyone wants to be a hero? Now is your chance to make it into the history books. Once all is said and done much more is said than done. Do something!
- lnf69, on 10/20/2007, -2/+6Sorry, but there were Racial Laws under Mussolini's fascism. Many say that was just to please their ally, Hitler. But I find that to be a piss poor excuse.
You are very wrong to say that "Fascism had nothing to do with rounding up the Jews ,,, " Crack those history books again, pls.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Italian_fascism
see the part titled "Fascism and anti-Semitism" - DopplerDuck, on 10/20/2007, -0/+4With this private army being larger than the US army in Iraq, and with the power it apparently wields, Bush is indistinguishable from any of those "warlords" that one hears of operating in Afghanistan, Central Asia and Africa.
- opticwind, on 10/17/2007, -0/+4"Clinton didn't lie about having Sexual relations. He asked the people asking the questions "what is sexual relations", they defined it as straight sex. This Clinton didn't do so could say he didn't have sexual relations."
Bull...CRAP. He wasn't looking for a "definition" of sex, he was trying to weasel out of getting caught! What Clinton did was nowhere near as bad as Bush but damn don't just flat out lie. Hell, CLINTON admits to lying. - ChuckInReno, on 10/20/2007, -0/+4We must not let the Bush regime start another ***** war.
- wakananda, on 10/20/2007, -1/+5The hell it is. What kind of spineless, bloodless, American-sunset-watching emo wreckage are you? Pull yourself together!!! Find your equipment!!!
These are the times that try men's souls. And their NADS. Get with the program:
1. Copy of the Constitution (read and repeat)
2. Rifle, shotgun, sidearm (practice, repeat)
3. Whatever it takes to get you to cowboy up - God, your girlfriend, PCP, whatever (repeat as needed)
4. Convert your worthless paper debt money into gold NOW, and prepare to join the sustainable economy.
3. Get away from your computer awhile and get involved in your community. Educate and learn, as appropriate.
Stay busy. Quit moping and start hoping. A stitch in time - oh, you figure it out. - fflush, on 10/20/2007, -0/+4@mac
things aren't really going well. - madpie, on 10/20/2007, -1/+4This has been a public service announcement from the Department of Paranoid Militia Rhetoric.
- inactive, on 10/20/2007, -0/+3It also depends on the definition of "We". "We" don't torture people, because we send them out of the country to be tortured by someone else.
- treehugger87, on 10/20/2007, -0/+3I love you man. Where do you live? I'm coming to live there!
I won't make any excuses for us, but there is a serious lack of freedom in this country right now. The true Patriots in this country are finding themselves barraged by a system that is rigged against us. Our constitution doesn't mean anything anymore.
Don't just sit there complaining, is right. Frank Rich's article is a call to the masses to rise up. Do it peacefully, but do it! -
