I believe that the amount that the USA may actually be quite a bit higher. There is some pretty questionable accounting done at the Pentagon. Certain State Department expenses include military missions, our war funding for Iraq and Afghanistan are not included in the Defense budget and our 50Billion intelligence budget should also be partly reported as defense spending
Bottom line we spend more than half of all the military spending on earth.
That is why we are constantly at war. If we build shiny new war toys and give the generals money to use them, the influence of the Military Industrial complex will convince the politicians of the need to get out the aircraft carrier battle groups and the Special Forces Insertion Teams and the B2 stealth bombers to go kill people in the name of freedom and liberty.
I f we want to be at peace and if we want to keep our government solvent close ALL foreign bases. Quit NATO, the Europeans can take care of themselves, reduce military spending by 90% and pay off the deficit - Kent4jmj, on 08/14/2008, -1/+16Frederic Bastiat said it over a hundred years ago. When the government robs you of your money to buy something the economy is made poorer not richer. When a private citizen spends money he earned by producing something on the produce of another citizen wealth is generated. Both parties worked and are productive. Government on the other hand does not produce anything. It only spends your money.

- bcomeaux, on 08/14/2008, -0/+6Quite amazing when you put this in perspective with the situation the global economy finds itself in. They stole from us to engage in wars that directly contradict our values when we really could've used our soldiers, our money, and even our international reputation for so much more. Such horse *****.
- jodimcmullen, on 08/14/2008, -0/+6Guns vs Butter. I believe we can have both, things are just way out of balance now, we need a little more butter please with our depleted uranium. And we need to hook up to that big old light bulb in the sky for electric power, that will take away the incentive for many of these wars. Oil/Gas vs Solar.
- nick1971, on 08/19/2008, -0/+1Just think about all those terrible things that the US could spend the money on instead. Frivolous luxuries which form the basis of the corrupt European Union such as Universal health care, free access to education including university education, city and state infrastructure, public transport, investment on alternative energy sources.
Thank god that the US spends its money on weapons. Maybe as a next step you could invade Holland. The international court of human rights is there which is a good reason to invade plus hash and prostitution are legal so it would be a real boast for morale. We could call it Operation Water Bong - sphira, on 08/15/2008, -0/+1A solar array's power in space microwaved to earth -

- brightlight4, on 08/15/2008, -0/+1Spain builds it's economy on construction as that is considered to be an investment for the people to put their money into. How the Hell can a country build its economy on war mongering weapon production etc to produce or prolong wars and hope to get some good out of it? One day the price will have to be paid in lives and suffering too.
