- labmouse42, on 04/17/2009, -2/+54The GOP is polarizing their base, and pushing away the moderates.
Rush Limbaugh -- their flag bearer -- is quoted with the following
1. I mean, let’s face it, we didn’t have slavery in this country for over 100 years because it was a bad thing. Quite the opposite: slavery built the South. I’m not saying we should bring it back; I’m just saying it had its merits. For one thing, the streets were safer after dark.
2. You know who deserves a posthumous Medal of Honor? James Earl Ray [the confessed assassin of Martin Luther King]. We miss you, James. Godspeed.
By pushing away anyone with a brain, the GOP will continue to doom themselves to lose election after election. - JlmAWP, on 04/17/2009, -4/+50Half these people don't even know why they're protesting. Fascist, socialist, Muslim, baby-killer, non-American....there is just all kinds of crap coming out of these protests.
Fox's sponsored protests and rallies are very reflective of the GOP right now. No common goals, no good ideas, and no direction...just a bunch of people yelling about a bunch of different stuff that pisses them off for reasons unknown, a lot of which are kind of kooky. Good luck getting the swing voters to agree with you, guys.
In other words, "keep up the good work". - Bartboy919, on 04/18/2009, -2/+19For me, it failed at the part when they only started caring about the deficit & taxes on January 20th, 2009.
- detcade, on 04/18/2009, -2/+18Let /me/ know when you have an actual argument.
- Dipsomaniac, on 04/18/2009, -1/+16poprocks, comebacks aren't facts. When you have some of them (it would be a nice change), why not c'mon back?
- kareemachan, on 04/17/2009, -1/+15I would just like to see one of these people actually define fascism or socialism or the difference between the two and communism. They couldn't do it. They just hear Rushie or somebody say that Obama is a socialist and they're off and running with it. To paraphrase Tom Petty: "Teabaggers without a clue..."
- aussiejan, on 04/17/2009, -4/+16For me the teabagging thing failed for many reasons but the main one was - if this was supposed to be an uprising of "the people" where were the people of colour? I think about 45% of Americans are not white, yet 99% of the teabaggers were white. Do the people of colour not get it? I think, in fact, they do, which is why they stayed away.
- eliot2000, on 04/18/2009, -3/+14The danger here for the right is that they're branding themselves as totally 100% against everything Obama is doing. Works out great if he fails. But come the next senate race, if things are going well, voters are going to be associating these tea parties with the republicans they aren't voting for.
- saintrage, on 04/18/2009, -5/+16Where were the tea baggers when President Bush turned a trillion dollar budget surplus into the largest deficit in history. Vice-President Cheney told us "deficits don't matter". I wonder why all of a sudden they matter. The tea parties were supposed to be about taxes but turned into a big Obama Bashing. Is anyone suprised? Taxes and deficits did not appear on inauguration day 2009, a black president did.
- DD2CC2U, on 04/17/2009, -11/+22The GOP Motto = Tea Bagging Party = We like to suck B____LLs
- CaptDD, on 04/17/2009, -4/+14
Finally a first step in the Right (no pun intended) direction...
It will be good for America to have the Rep. Party run by non zealots and NOT weirdo's like Falin' Palin, Steele, Ru$$ and the other media loonies that are NOW trying to incite folks using Right Wing Religious tactics...
Welcome back to reality Rep.'s...
It will be good for America to have the Rep. Party run by non zealots and NOT weirdo's like Falin' Palin, Steele, Ru$$ and the other media loonies that are NOW trying to incite folks using Right Wing Religious tactics...
Welcome back to reality Rep.'s... - storminnorm, on 04/18/2009, -4/+14That first video was embarrassing and I've been laughing at this protest since I first heard about it. I couldn't even finish once it got to the second guy. When a reporter, or anybody really, can effectively shoot down your arguments without a split second's thought put into it, go home.
- dougs55, on 04/18/2009, -5/+13Heck with all the racial sensitivity...did you notice that people with college degrees and/or high IQs weren't well represented either ???
- JumpingJack79, on 04/18/2009, -4/+11Well, it would seem that people of color either don't like tea or they love paying taxes...
Speaking of that, only 300 thousand people attended these protests, which is only 0.1% of the population. That means the US is one tax loving nation! Was this the intended message? - heythere1857, on 04/18/2009, -2/+7"And we'll end up with a one party system..."
When we have both a republican and a democrat sponsoring bills like this: http://digg.com/d1ocDe , I think we're already there. - shark72, on 04/18/2009, -0/+5Agreed that Rush is a gigantic, racist, idiot... but it does appear that the "James Earl Ray" quote is an urban legend:
http://maaadddog.wordpress.com/2009/03/04/quotatio ... - inactive, on 04/18/2009, -0/+4Rodeo clown Glenn Beck & drug addict Rush Limbaugh are the most prominent Republican party leaders. If that fact didn't turn you off, bunch of morons tea-bagging each other on the streets surely will.
- detcade, on 04/18/2009, -2/+6Was that even English?
- deculture, on 04/18/2009, -1/+5dohohohohoho
- orlandogeek, on 04/18/2009, -1/+4That'd probably be based on the fact that 99% of the people shown in every news clip of the "tea party" events was white.
- KirbyMeister, on 04/18/2009, -0/+3AFAIK it was the Ron Paul campaign that started these tea parties last year. The GOP got wind of this and co-opted it for their own "liberals suck, but we dont know why" Neocon desires. There were several tea parties where the Libertarians and Ron Paul people outnumbered the Neocons many times over. HuffPo should at least mention this, but I'm not aware if they have; someone please tell me if they have.
But yeah Rush Limbaugh... WTF is he saying? It's the ***** Southern Strategy all over again. Guess what? Those people are -dying-. And -he-, is -not- my flag bearer of conservatism. That honor is reserved for actual paleoconservatives (Ron Paul) and Libertarians. - dygel, on 04/18/2009, -0/+3I'll tell you what: if the Democratic party in this political cycle succeeds at absolutely nothing else than to make the GOP leadership and its members realize that they have to divorce themselves from their fringe element that they allowed to lead their party for the last 8 years, it'll still be a tremendous success for America.
- ellerich, on 04/18/2009, -0/+3Two wrongs don't make a right
- orlandogeek, on 04/18/2009, -0/+3TopKnot:
Where were you complaining about government spending excesses when Bush was dumping 10 billion dollars a month into Iraq for no good reason, and don't hand me this ***** about it was to pay for the troops because the troops shouldn't have been there in the first place.
Where were you when this spending was taken off the budget to mask the true deficit it was leading to?
Where was your dissenting voice then?
Where were you? I'll tell you where.
You were telling people like me who were using facts not speculation about the Bush administration's failings to shut the hell up and respect the President. That's where you were.
Well you know what? You keep talking your talk. You're free to do so. You know what though? People who operate their lives on facts see what you're saying for what it really is.
The misguided, speculative rantings of a person belonging to a party currently populated by some really sore losers. - Fr33th0t, on 04/18/2009, -0/+2"HuffPo should at least mention this, but I'm not aware if they have; someone please tell me if they have."
I'm not sure what this would add to the discussion. So the Libertarians were able to out number Republicans in a few teabag parties, does that mean that Republicans should be less worried about the potential of losing independent voters over this sort of tactic?
I haven't seen any breakdown by party--and don't expect to since Republicans are a bit sensitive to having ripped off the paulbots. I'd think any attempt to count by party ID would be hopeless. - labmouse42, on 04/19/2009, -0/+2That's quite possible.
Everything on google is not true. - inactive, on 04/18/2009, -4/+6THE GOP's only chance is to turn against the religious nutjobs. But they won't. And we'll end up with a one party system, and they'll say it's our fault.
- Rassa, on 04/18/2009, -0/+2If that is the case why was it advertised so much on Fox News?
- chesterogilvie, on 04/18/2009, -5/+799% of "teabaggers" were white? Where did you get this info?
- orlandogeek, on 04/18/2009, -0/+2Here's a map of all the planned protests: http://nicedeb.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/tpmap21 ...
I counted 206 protest spots. Granted I may have missed some as the map is fairly small, but let's take a look at the math. That's an average of 1450 people per event. Sounds good right? Sure, looks good on paper or in a talking point.
The reality remains that at an estimated population of 306 million in the US, if only 300k people showed up that's somewhere between .09% and .10% of the population. In the big picture view, that's a fairly minimal turnout. - orlandogeek, on 04/18/2009, -0/+2Those of us that made fun of it by calling it teabagging only did so because several people promoting the events used the term first without apparently knowing of it's other meaning.
- orlandogeek, on 04/18/2009, -0/+2I agree from what the information I've been able to find. The tax day protests have been around for awhile, and Ron Paul supporters were involved previously and perhaps this year. It's sad but true that FOX News and the Republicans latched onto this like a rabid dog and caused a lot of "independent thinkers" with some wildly varying theories to show up and pervert the original goal of the protests.
- shark72, on 04/18/2009, -0/+2You're aware that the Obama administration has already lowered your taxes?
The administration has stated that the stimulus program will be paid for through reduced spending, not increased taxes.
If the protests have energized you, then good luck and Godspeed. But it appears that the people who are protesting against higher taxes are tilting at windmills. - rda1441, on 04/18/2009, -0/+2You're one of the biggest problems with this country. You have a problem with Obama....all the sudden it's a race problem....
Guess what, 99% of the people who don't approve of Obama don't give a flying leap what color he is. His race does NOT matter...his failed policies, his subservient stance with other governments, and his willingness to ram a liberal agenda down the throats of Americans DO matter. - orlandogeek, on 04/18/2009, -0/+2History doesn't support your assertion.
- orlandogeek, on 04/18/2009, -0/+1The cracks in the foundation of our economy started quite a bit before the past 8 years. Failed banking policies stem from rampant greed which comes from removal of regulation on what banks can and cannot do and which companies can operate as banks.
- rda1441, on 04/18/2009, -0/+1Failed banking policies helped cause this problem. That and the fact that the government started down the path of bail outs and 'stimulus packages' when a problem was recognized continue the problem.
The government has helped keep business in business that should have failed....The government has helped keep people in home ownership, when they have no business to own a home...and the government continues to give itself a pat on the back for their hard work.
These aren't solutions, they are just more problems. - Fr33th0t, on 04/18/2009, -0/+1I keep hearing this claim, but nobody has been able to prove it.
- labmouse42, on 04/19/2009, -0/+1Don't bother with flames.
If that the best any right wingers can do, your party is doomed. - rda1441, on 04/18/2009, -1/+2Defend Obama all you three like, the fact remains he's created many many many more problems in the 90+ days he has been in office than he has even thought about solving.
- gnixon70, on 04/19/2009, -0/+1very well put dave. Think we all are getting sick and tired of both sides of the isle. It's not about left, right, at least not for me. It's about a corrupt government doing whatever and bailing out whoever the hell it wants without any say from the people they are supposed to be serving in the first place.
- davebg8r, on 04/18/2009, -0/+1Reading comprehension is not your strong point is it? Did I say everyone there shared my point of view? Is there something inherently wrong with people being anti-Obama, against his policies and against the liberal viewpoint in general? No there is not.
Also realize the MSM shows you what they want to show you. So they can focus on whatever groups of people they want and make it seem like that was the majority. You should already know this by now. - orlandogeek, on 04/18/2009, -0/+1Do some research on political science, left and right ideologies. What you'll find will free your mind! There is no real left in this country.
- inactive, on 04/18/2009, -0/+1Wow. What an ugly thing to say. I bet smug ***** like you don't even vote because taking part in democratic process is for "little" people.
- AnonymousSkull, on 04/18/2009, -1/+2Every political party has their own nutjobs. We had a lot of crazies running around while President Bush was in office, and we have a lot of crazies running around now that President Obama is in office. It really comes down to how they're portrayed in the media (and that depends on the station's typical political direction) and how they act when they speak out in public. I'm not surprised that people are taking to the streets, this ***** has been going on for decades. Personally I find myself happiest around the middle of spectrum - but I guess that's just the way I was born and raised, and who I'm friends with (both very far Right and very far Left).
- angrykeyboarder, on 04/20/2009, -0/+1How so?
- shark72, on 04/18/2009, -1/+2You're probably right about the 99%, but what on earth do you mean by "failed policies?" He's been in office what, 90 days?
Remember, the economy started taking a crap about six months ago. I don't think most people expected his team to turn things around in less than three months... did you? - orlandogeek, on 04/18/2009, -0/+1Over regulation? Seriously? Lack of regulation is one of the problems that put us where we are today.
