- shawnfassett, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12The White House may claim victory if Saddam is executed..and while this would be good news for people that are afraid of him, we should also be very aware that this may increase the violence in Iraq to levels way beyond our imaginations.
Making a martyr out of Saddam by having this sham trial (should have been held in Geneva) was a mistake. - hawkeye17, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Where is Bin Laden...the guy that actually DID attack us on 9/11?? Laughing his butt off in Pakistan at all of us that's where. Bush is the best thing that ever happened to the terrorists he claims to be fighting.
- tomboy501, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7The dems will at least take the House on Tuesday...and this Saddam trial isn't going to be much of a blip on the radar. Rove and the strategists actually screwed up this time. If the GOP wanted to get mileage out of a televised verdict, they would have been better timing it for Monday. Aren't there like 15 football games on Sunday? No voters that matters to the GOP are going to be glued to CNN or care about Saddam...(even during half-time).
- EntropyMan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Newsflash: the death toll for US coalition soldiers has exceeded that for all people killed in 911. And Iraq had nothing to do with 911, except being an outlet for a country's anger and an excuse for a government to exploit that anger for its own ends. What kind of victory is this?
Look, we all know Saddam will be found guilty. And I'm not saying he's not, but the fact that the US can control the timing of the verdict shows the world that the trial is a SHAM. It's not justice, but political theater.
There's one way to handle this. Start telling everyone that Saddam has been found guilty (he has). Let the SURPRISE blow up in Bush's face when we all already know the outcome. Let it ring hollow. Don't let the media play this game. All they really want is the show, a picture of Saddam being executed. Don't let them run the show. - zeeeej, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7This just in: Saddam Hussein was a bad guy. Duh.
Of course he's guilty of crimes against humanity. We knew that 20 years ago when Donald Rumsfeld went to Iraq, shook Saddam's hand and told him what a great friend he was.
People knew this before the war. The question is, is this trial worth 2800 American soldiers? - iching, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5This is a US financed trial
The court, the training and the whole proceedings cost US$75 million - courtesy of US taxpayers (the budget was allocated in May 2004). About 300 people - paid by the Americans - work on the trial machinery. The five "secret" Iraqi judges - Shi'ites and Kurds, no Sunnis - are paid by the Americans, live inside the Green Zone and are protected by the Americans from being kidnapped or killed.
They have received special training from US, British and Australian legal experts and have even staged a mock trial in London. They are supposed to be "independent" in a country on which "the United States continues to wield vast influence", according to the understated Associated Press. Human Rights Watch has warned on the record that the trial may be "violating international standards for fair trials".

- voteforblank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The only hope we may have is that they find him not guilty, and he gets elected back as president of Iraq!!
That just might put this damn f-'d up country of ours in it's place - once and for all. - skizex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The death toll in Iraq is way above 650,000 Iraqis that they admit too, the toll from Gulf 1 alone is over 11,000 US, with 325,000 troops ill from the evil BOOsh 1 vaccines/DU poisoning.
Do you really believe that is Saddam on TV? He has a lot of doubles, remember. I don't buy it a bit. If the Camp Falcon ammo dump nuke story was spread over the news (Google Iraq Tactical Nuke) we'd see some Repugs become true conservatives once more, and maybe
stave off ww3 w Iran. - wintermd, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3Ah, dem's losing on Tuesday, it sure will be sweet. Hay has flipper been muzzled yet?
