- Someguy101, on 02/19/2009, -6/+45President Bush shouldn't be telling anyone to do anything. He should be stepping down from his position and the sooner he's gone the better.
As for the conservation of gas Americans should be telling themselves this and not relying on Government to tell them they should live responsibly. - tbhurst, on 07/16/2008, -4/+25Funny thing for the President to say that he doesn't want to tell consumers what to do, especially considering he tells consumers what to do (i.e. the "go shopping" requests of the American public from Bush in 2001 and 2006).
- inactive, on 07/16/2008, -6/+27Yep.
- chrystie69, on 07/16/2008, -3/+16Of course he won't...his buddies need to make money while they can! Americans are already telling themselves to conserve gas, there's a huge loss in tourism and people on the road for the holidays etc. Also more people using commuter rails, at least hear in the Boston area they are starting to get packed with people FINALLY using the public transportation rather then driving!
- liuite, on 07/16/2008, -2/+10The price at the pump dictates the equilibrium quantity that consumers are willing consume. hence the higher the price, less quantity will be consumed.
- MorganMghee, on 07/17/2008, -1/+8In five seconds of lucidity:
THE PRESIDENT: I think people ought to conserve and be wise about how they use gasoline and energy. Absolutely. And there's some easy steps people can take. You know, if they're not in their home, they don't keep their air-conditioning running. There's a lot of things people can do. - jstohler, on 07/17/2008, -0/+7He once said America is addicted to oil. If he truly believes that, he might want to, you know, discourage its use.
- avengingturnip, on 07/16/2008, -4/+11Is it really necessary when gas costs so much? Of course people are trying to conserve.
- inactive, on 07/16/2008, -5/+11NO, if people are to stupid to not conserve energy there is nothing Bush or anyone else can do about it
- whoreable, on 07/17/2008, -1/+7I can't see myself taking any kind of advice from that guy.
- dangerlarson, on 07/17/2008, -2/+8He says the average consumer is plenty smart. Apparently not if we've inflicted this guy on ourselves for the last 8 years.
- simplicityiskey, on 07/17/2008, -1/+7I'm amazed at his audacity on this one. They haven't had any trouble telling us what to do in the past.
- Protuhj, on 07/17/2008, -1/+6Lest we forget, Bush is from Texas. What's big in Texas? OIL.
Bush is out in < 6 months, he needs a job after he is done, of course he won't be telling Americans to conserve. - Britney90210, on 07/16/2008, -2/+7He needs to step down and stay away from offshore oil drilling! IMPEACH BUSH!
- Shabow, on 07/17/2008, -0/+5Why would he tell them to when Dick is profiting from it?
- AndrewKC6, on 07/17/2008, -0/+5Someone should be, but W's advice hasn't helped America so much in the past few years...
- relic180, on 07/17/2008, -2/+6Sure, lets figure out ways to maintain our dependency on finite resources, because that's the best long term strategy.
Or, more simply put, you fail. - squaredUP, on 07/17/2008, -0/+4I'd rather he not tell us anything and just go away...
- scotq, on 07/17/2008, -0/+4Conservation and efficiency with respect to natural resources is the smartest way to go.
- ordig, on 07/17/2008, -2/+5President Bush should be decapitating himself with a chainsaw.
but he's not doing that either. - relic180, on 07/17/2008, -1/+4I don't think the president can even pronounce "conserve", let alone articulate a sentence around it.
- relic180, on 07/17/2008, -1/+4If bush actually DID tell Americans to conserve gas (hypothetically speaking of course), would people waste excessive amounts of gas just to piss all over his suggestion?
- bbqsalad, on 07/17/2008, -0/+3hes an oil man, i mean, his blood is oil. his heart is black.
- bobbi21, on 07/17/2008, -1/+3uh. the highest estimate i've every seen was 100 years left for oil. Although the majority have it at 50 years. And this of course includes the assumption that there are oil fields that we haven't discovered yet.
- tbhurst, on 07/16/2008, -2/+4Learningisfun:
Thanks for that link, and I would probably blame the omission more on "poor memory," than "selective memory!"
But I think there is a critical difference difference between what Bush said in 2005 and what he is not saying in 2008; in 2005 he wanted to conserve because of the pressure put on the oil infrastructure by hurricanes Rita and Katrina.
The following is from the NYT article you linked to:
"We can all pitch in by being better conservers," Mr. Bush said after being briefed on the hurricanes' impact on the energy industry at the Energy Department. "People just need to recognize that these storms have caused disruptions." In addition to urging consumers to cut back to ease the pain of the current supply shortages, he said federal employees should use carpool and public transport and not take non-essential trips. - wjm0139, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2As much as I like the idea of an electric vehicle, I do have some concerns. Even with the current high prices of gas I still have the choice of where to fuel my vehicle. My concern is that if we start to switch to plug-in electric vehicles we will see the prices from the utility companies skyrocket. Even with de-regulation in the utilities they still basically enjoy a monopoly. Electricity prices to the home will have to increase due to demand and the companies need to upgrade their infrastructure.
I'm not saying that we shouldn't explore the possibility of electric vehicles, but rather that we take a look at the long term consequences.
-b - inactive, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2Does it hurt? Being that stupid, I mean.
- relic180, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2Note that it's not the free market that's inflating the cost of gas right now.
- RealmDown, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1I certainly spent MY vacation money driving to work.
I will also legitimately claim ZERO charitable contributions this years taxes. - inactive, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1From what I heard a Sheik said that Diesel prices are going to go up also by the end of the month?
- brettalton, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1=( That's sad. I got rid of my car for exactly this reason. Not like it helped much...
- relic180, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1It's funny when people think its newsworthy to point out how hypocritical bush and his lackeys are being. If we had evidence of him acting in the best interests of tax paying American citizens, now THAT would be worth highlighting.
- whatknight, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1that son of a bitch...
- Hetman, on 07/17/2008, -1/+2He should not have to. In a free market the cost of gas should determine how much fuel you use.
- wet_napkin, on 07/17/2008, -1/+2I know I would. :D
- inactive, on 07/17/2008, -1/+2Should Al Gore?
- inactive, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1You need to step down from all caps.
- inactive, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1Economics is not arithmetic.
- MorganMghee, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1Free? C'mon! Oil companies get our tax dollars, and our retail dollars. They use that to A) influence government policy in their favor B) Manipulate and hide facts about their operations C) Solicit and pay for facty reports in their favor that contain little if any actual facts D) invest in and or purchase media or access to restrict and influence the flow of information required to make informed decisions allowing us to participate in a 'free market'.
- daRoach, on 07/17/2008, -5/+5He should be working on having us drill in Alaska and offshore so we can be rid of foreign oil dependence. People whining about how he is ruining their lives need to go out and do something about bettering their own. Pay attention in your own local politics to fix problems locally, the federal government has not gone through so many changes in Bush's administration that it is ruining people's lives. People who believe that Bush is ruining their life are stretching and skewing the truth and succumbing to bandwagon mentality because I can honestly say the man has had no power over what good or bad decisions I have made and the accomplishments I have achieved in the past 8 years.
- daRoach, on 07/17/2008, -2/+2Finite resources that we will never exhaust in 500 years.
- rontowns25, on 07/17/2008, -0/+0He should be telling American's to get off their butt and start a business, so that they don't have to directly worry about rising gas prices! .... www.readtheanswer.com/index.php?RTA=web2
- LEARNINGISFUN, on 07/16/2008, -4/+3He has before, why not now? Poor memory or is it selective?

- beauley, on 07/16/2008, -4/+3There have been many attempts to design an electric powered vehicle for as long as the the internal combustion engine has been around. Unfortunately, battery power was never a formidable contender to the present internal combustion engine, but it looks as though the future looks more pronising.

The Electric Vehicle, is It the Answer? - Tanktunker, on 07/17/2008, -3/+1Should Americans know they should be using less gas?
Yes, yes they should, stop using so much gas, fatties. - beauley, on 07/16/2008, -6/+3Our world is in a period of great change. We are experiencing global warming at a rate never seen before. The change we are experiencing is in redirecting our energy sources that will hopefully reverse this trend. Our fossil fuel supplies are slowly being depleted and likewise gradually being augmented with pollution free energy sources that do not need replacement
