- AmnesiacJack, on 07/13/2009, -1/+32Things are going to have to get MUCH worse before it gets to the tipping point where people decide to do something about the corrupt system.
- undervalued, on 07/13/2009, -0/+27Not shocking, unfortunately.
- djskyler, on 07/13/2009, -1/+22The voters keep this corruption going by their continued support of two major political parties who long ago gave up representing the interests of the "rabble."
"The Democratic Party" and "The G.O.P." are essentially two private companies that sell illusions and promises to a people too distracted to keep score. These companies induce enthusiasm amongst the people with popular topics that cause an emotional response, things such as "abortion," "gay rights," "illegal immigration" or "welfare." After inducing votes with the fear that the "other side might win," it is surprising that soon after a heated election the people quickly lose focus. All fail to note that campaign promises are broken by both companies so that all issues are inevitably resolved in favor of corporate interests.

3. Make lobbying for $$$ illegal. - inactive, on 07/13/2009, -6/+18I bet you think you're smart huh?
Too bad you aren't smart enough to realize that both liberal and conservative politics are completely evil. - dafragsta, on 07/13/2009, -0/+9One for me, one for you. Two for me, one for you. Three for me, one for you...

- tgc1, on 07/13/2009, -2/+9One of these days these pieces of ***** are going to go one step too far in their underhanded, shady dealings. And someone, somewhere is going to start a riot. When that happens, the people might bring forth the gallows and watch these pieces of ***** hang from their necks.

- srs2000, on 07/13/2009, -0/+6Looking at right now.. I would hate to see MUCH worse.
- ByteMeAHole, on 07/13/2009, -0/+5Change - rather than the Republicans doing it, it's the Democrats doing it... Either way - the taxpayer is the one that needs to bend over and take it... Unless we kick their a** out...
- omgwtflawl, on 07/13/2009, -0/+5How exactly do we decide that "it isn't allowed" again? Are we going to "vote them out" of their office? Got some bad news for you there, the rules are set up so that will never happen. The Rs and the Ds have a huge vested interest in making sure that doesn't happen, in fact.
There is only one way we can fix this broken system, and that involves scrapping it entirely. - JohnGalt750, on 07/13/2009, -0/+4When you put the government in control of something money follows. Corruption is endemic to power. This is why you don't allow the state to determine winners and losers in the market.
If the federal government picks which industries/companies succeed and which fail. It will simply be an excercise in who can promise the most money to bureaucrats. Everyone talks about the "evils of a free market" but they fail to mention that it's better than any alternative. A state economy just becomes a monopoly of money AND force. - MORPHOTOSoNET, on 07/13/2009, -0/+4WHEN THE ***** ARE WE GONNA GET MAD?!
- areyouserial, on 07/13/2009, -0/+4"God forbid we should ever be twenty years without such a rebellion.
The people cannot be all, and always, well informed. The part which is
wrong will be discontented, in proportion to the importance of the facts
they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions,
it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty. ...
And what country can preserve its liberties, if it's rulers are not
warned from time to time, that this people preserve the spirit of
resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as
to the facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost
in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from
time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
It is its natural manure." - Thomas Jefferson - juslen, on 07/21/2009, -0/+4You people better learn to differentiate between Conservatives and Republicans.
There are many people out there who consider themselves conservative, who do not follow any particular political party. Conservatism is about limited government, lower taxes, and our following our constitution.
This government if full of Republicans who have no interest in any of those things. Their party is based on the votes, its a title mostly to gain support over opposition that may be much more liberal. Often Republicans are middle or centrist.. think John McCain. And he is no Conservative. - Elranzer, on 07/13/2009, -1/+5/s
^ I think you dropped this. - Benno, on 07/13/2009, -2/+6Using money to buy political influence is as old as government. In the past the problem was that it was hard to prove and spread the word. Today it's hard to do something too nasty without it being on wikileaks, blogs, or indie media. The problem is apathy and partisan attitudes concerning corruption. Take the recent Mark Sanford scandal. Some conservative pundits were making excuses for him. Had he been a Democrat they would have crucifying him.
- shylove, on 07/13/2009, -0/+3The profit locomotive has gone loco....all of this profit and all of these lobbyists paying for access are just being added to our tab as well as the nonprint exclusions fo things not covered by the non-insurance policies, as well as the cost of the addictive compulsive consumer targeting psyop adverting and disinformation campaigns... our society is drowning in the expense of high paid elites feeding on our ever more dwindling resources...
- bitterprick, on 07/13/2009, -1/+4Move along folks. Nothing to see here. Just another day.
- kd1s, on 07/13/2009, -3/+6I am constantly astounded when I read stories like this. It is now common knowledge that our government is corrupted beyond any of our imaginations.
Yet we have race based tea parties happening, not anger vented at the very corporations that hold our lives in the balance.
My friend and I differ on this issue. He says make government more open and accountable. That's happening little by little, you can pretty much see your U.S. congressmens votes on the WaPo of all places.
But I say in addition to openness we need serious and severe regulation clamped down on corporations. They ridden roughshod over us since the 19th century and it's time we put a stop to it.
I may be overly simplistic but I say insert the following into the 14th Amendment: "This Amendment does not apply to corporations" because that is the Amendment that corporations use, along with the Santa Clara County v. Southern Pacific Railroad 1886 case, where a sneaking clerk put language in the final case document that showed the justices believe corporations did deserve the same rights as flesh and blood humans.
They don't. They lobby (And establish PAC's, run TV ads for/against candidates etc.) under the guise of 1st Amendment protections.
Imagine what would happen if they didn't have those 'rights'? - GovernmentsGun, on 07/13/2009, -0/+3Being voted into office does not change the nature of these individuals. It does not make them virtuous, altruistic, egalitarian, or anything of the sort. It doesn't make them concerned with your welfare. And amazingly enough, the average person seems to realize that corruption is rampant in government. And then they declare we absolutely need these corrupt people to protect us from other corrupt people.
- denizen42, on 07/13/2009, -1/+3Why?
- richmomz, on 07/13/2009, -2/+4Indeed - this country has the most expensive free press in the world!
- richmomz, on 07/13/2009, -1/+3"Which straw will break the camels back? Taking away our guns?" Well that's what triggered the *first* revolution!
- dafragsta, on 07/13/2009, -4/+6Just play into their hand buddy. It seems that the Right is the slowest to come to the conclusion that there really is only one team. Elected officials vs everyone else. Anyone who thinks different is delusional. At least the left are critical of Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi for their shenanigans. I never hear the GOP faithful attack one of their own. *****, Sarah Palin is only now starting to draw criticisms that she might not be cut out for Major League Politics.
Watch the lefty lib "Daily Show" some time and see what real centrist journalism is all about. They have to call themselves the fake news just to keep the status quo from being disturbed too much, and even that ruse is wearing off when left leaning politicians are now citing embarrassment on the Daily Show as an excuse for being restrictive with information. Transparency is Obama's biggest lie. No politician anywhere wants transparency, because then you could see Hulk Hogan and the Iron Sheik in the dressing room being best friends while winding up to get in the ring pretending to be mortal enemies. - Barackalypse, on 07/13/2009, -5/+7Corruption, somewhere in Washington, DC other than the Government? That is news worthy!
- GovernmentsGun, on 07/13/2009, -0/+24. Include sunset provisions in ever law.
- sooperdooper, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2And then the new politicians will just get bought out, because large corporations represent this country's economy, and their interests need to be protected. :/
The government has become an institution which not only is corrupt, but which replicates corruption. - cscofield, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2'Tis why our beloved government is such a farce.
- sooperdooper, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2Or more commonly, that their candidate already is altruistic or virtuous, and will change the system from within. But when he arrives in Congress, he's surrounded by corrupt people with whom he has to curry favor. He learns how to play the game, at least until he's in a position to help his constituents. But by that point, he's been playing the games too long. So the bright, reformist candidate of today becomes the crushed, corrupt politician of tomorrow.
- richmomz, on 07/13/2009, -1/+2Not just DC but the mainstream media as well.
- GovernmentsGun, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1I don't think we'll ever do anything about it. As a culture, we feel that a bad government is better than no government or a change in government. Until we get past that, we're stuck.
- JohnEHubertz, on 09/30/2009, -0/+1Forget riots and violence and civil unrest.
Refusal to work - general strikes; that's the tool of popular uprising and is too amorphous for them to attack.
...and indeed Benno, "We the Media" is finally putting teeth in the sleeping giant of We the People.
Liberty 2.0 = economic justice, peace and opportunity, and the end of elitism and tyranny rising from manipulation of the electorate. - defendliberty, on 07/13/2009, -2/+3One of these days? WE have border patrol checkpoints 50 miles inland. They listen in on everything you say, and monitor your every move without a warrant.
Which straw will break the camels back? Taking away our guns? - kingp, on 07/13/2009, -2/+2SHOCKING!
- GovernmentsGun, on 07/13/2009, -1/+1Personally I'd rather see an Amendment put into place that says the 'Interstate Commerce Clause' doesn't allow the government to take control of everything under the sun. That has done more harm than any corporation to date.
- mnocket, on 07/13/2009, -5/+2This is OLD news. Why is it making the front page now?
- EllsworthT, on 07/12/2009, -33/+14But The Washington Post is run by liberals, how is this possible?!?
