thinkprogress.org — Because he criticized Rumsfeld, Gen. James Jones, the Supreme Allied Commander in Europe, now finds himself the target of a smear campaign. A Rumsfeld ally said: "James Jones is highly political — a real Washington operator. He of all generals to claim that the chiefs have become political is highly ironic if not laughable.“

    First ever! Must take someone of exceptional character and judgement to fill that role, would it not? Someone who's opinions on Iraq you would find exceptionally credible? Or is Rumsfeld saying that he promoted the first ever Marine chief of NATO not for his leadership qualities but some other less relevant reason, and damn him for being ungrateful?
