Rove Re-Writes History. Again.
crooksandliars.com — Bush political adviser Karl Rove claimed that he was “opposed” to holding the pre-war Iraq vote just ahead of the 2002 elections. I truly don’t think the man is capable of a single honest thought or statement. But this is so transparently dishonest that it’s laughable. Who does this guy think he’s fooling?

- Drahkar, on 11/24/2007, -1/+13Here is an even better question. What would it be like if we started actually prosecuting these people who are lying to the government at large and to all of us. Not only lying but like Rove is now, blatantly so. We all can remember Snow and his definitive, straight yes or no answers that would flip flop back and forth depending on what month it was for the same question.
- reddikilowatt, on 11/24/2007, -5/+1What would you charge him with? He wasn't a cabinet member, elected official or anything else that required an oath, confirmation or any other accountability. For all practical purposes, he was merely a bureaucrat, and all that was required for the position was to pass an FBI background investigation and maybe a civil service test.
This is the main problem with trying to get Bush 43 impeached. The people running the show know all too well what happened in the Nixon administration and figured out loopholes and ways to skirt the spirit of the law. They called Regan the Teflon president because none of the scandals would stick to him. That's nothing compared to how this administration is running things.- art42, on 11/24/2007, -0/+7Last I heard lying to Congress is a crime whether or not under oath.

- johnhummel, on 11/24/2007, -5/+75This is all part of the Big Lie theory: if you tell a lie so big that nobody would believe it, people feel that they have to believe it, because no one would tell a lie that big.
Rove knows this. He knows that to the loyal 25% of the nation, anything he (and "our lord and Savior George W. Bush") say is the Truth, and Nothing But the Truth. Any facts that are brought up to discard them as liars *have* to be made up by "angry liberals".
So, now you've got 25% of the people reading your lie believing it. You only have to convince a portion of the other 75%, most of whom probably *don't* know the facts anyway, or see two opinions and say "Well, one must be partially true, the other partially true, so split the difference, I guess." Next thing you know, you've got 50% believing that you're speaking the truth, and you can continue to lie and cheat and steal your way to power and fortune.
The only solution to this is 1. a media that is willing to stand up not for Fairness, but for Truth. There are *not* two sides to every argument - sometimes, as Edward Murrow once said, one side is so obviously the truth that there can be no counter arguement. If I had been the editor of Newsweek, I would have looked at this, had my fact checkers look it over, and then told Mr. Rove "I'm sorry, I'm not printing this - it's a pack of lies, here's the truth. Come up with another article, or be on your way."
But that takes courage, something that corporate media too obsessed with dollars than facts is in short supply of.- Michael9636, on 08/04/2008, -1/+12Great post, johnhummel! We need more people like you to point out that "there are 'not' two sides to every argument..." - Why can't the media see this?

- rcook18, on 11/26/2007, -0/+1Are newscasters more aware of the truth than the general public? After years of not asking real questions, perhaps the mainstream media is simply not competent to challenge such lies.

- Salviati, on 11/24/2007, -4/+50For those on here who are too young to remember the 2002 election, Rove's story is the EXACT OPPOSITE of what actually happened. At the time, there was a Democrat-controlled Senate which was largely opposed to the war. Then in the summer of 2002, the Bush administration started a relentless campaign to start the war in Iraq without Congressional authorization. Once it seemed that it would be too politically costly to go to war without the Congress' buy-in, the Republican party bullied Democratic Senators to have a vote on 'authorization' but not declaring war itself. They ran TV ads across the country and especially within vulnerable districts, and many Democrats caved. Many Senators lost their seats, and the Senate became Republican for the next 4 years. Sadly, the phrase "we all know Iraq has WMDs, but..." became ubiquitous, so it wasn't even brought up whether Iraq had WMDs or not. This WAS Bush's War, and he can't blame anyone else.

- p0s3r, on 11/24/2007, -13/+4Those poor innocent Democrats. No one but the evil neocons thought Saddam had WMDs prior to 2002. And those valiant Democrats from 2002 were vocally opposed to the war they just got bullied by the evil neocons.

- pkonink, on 11/24/2007, -1/+41. Neocon's are not simply following "failed conservative policies of the 80s." They have been developing their ideology since the 60s and it really didn't become what it is today until the fall of the USSR and their shift to Israel/Middle East in the 90s. During the 80s they were still obsessed with the spread of communism. I would not call Reagan a neocon - I wouldn't even call Bush Sr. one. I might be subtly wrong on this one, but not completely. These same neocons did have the ears of both of those presidents, so you can see it in some of their policies.
2. I strongly doubt that ideology matters at all to Rove. He is driven to win at any cost to grow and maintain power. He could be part of the Care Bear party dedicated to giving all Americans cupcakes, and he would be just as wicked and ruthless.
