http://www.thedailyshow.com/video/index.jhtml?vide ... - bennjammin, on 06/17/2009, -11/+159I like Roger Ebert, I almost always agree with his reviews. Dugg for O'Reilly Burn!
- doublefelix, on 06/17/2009, -16/+136Burn! Seriously, his considered and intellectual analysis concludes that Bill O'Reilly should...burn.
- EddiePotato, on 06/17/2009, -8/+110O'Reilly is a sociopathic bully, while Olbermann is just an opinionated partisan. When was the last time Olbermann screamed at somebody to SHUT UP?
The issue at hand isn't so much about their respective points of view as how they go about expressing them. - turbog20, on 06/17/2009, -3/+101Bill O'Reily, successfully destroying conservatism for anyone under 35!
- inactive, on 06/17/2009, -14/+104Dugg for Burn!
- nevrsumr, on 06/17/2009, -6/+94I give this two thumbs way up
- Stemnin, on 06/17/2009, -5/+81O'Reilly isn't satire because he's ***** insane, angry ***** insane.
- fragMasterFlash, on 06/17/2009, -2/+76I liked it better when tabloid journalism was limited to the trash rags at the supermarket checkout and not piped directly into homes via cable news channels.
- dasklaun, on 06/17/2009, -5/+66First, no one said anything in this thread about Olbermann. Anytime someone mentions O'Reilly someone has to pop in and resort to this tired meme.
Second, show me an example of Olbermann behaving like O'Reilly; show me where he talks over someone, tells them to shut up, or selectively edits an interview like he did with Joan Walsh. - ceredron, on 06/17/2009, -6/+62you're like seven years old, aren't you.
Ebert's been a rock of consistency ever since he started reviewing movies. He's one of the few men I consider to be completely honest and straightforward. You, on the other hand, need to grow up. - HEAVYisSPY, on 06/17/2009, -3/+54compelling argument.
- kingmanic, on 06/17/2009, -8/+55Eberts critique would swing both ways but O'Rielly is a more egregious example.
- rbalik, on 06/17/2009, -5/+50That case was discussed all over the place. Bill yelling didn't really contribute anything extra and probably detracted from the discussion since it wasn't the judge's fault. (I believe the prosecutor was the one who came up with the plea bargain)
- Lasereth, on 06/17/2009, -5/+47Ebert is the man. His movie reviews are spot on, his blog is the most interesting blog to pop up on the Internet in the past 5 years, his writing style is great, and he can REALLY get a point across if he wants to. Combine that with his dedication to his profession and his defending of evolution and non-religious folk and he's pretty much a community leader for sane people on the Internet. Every blog post he makes, he reads every single comment left by his readers and even responds to a ton of them, even when the comments get into the thousands (like his evolution blog). He does hate videogames (because he self-admittedly doesn't understand the appeal), but hey, nobody's perfect.
- INTERNETMASTER, on 06/17/2009, -5/+43to reference the article, I believe this would be an example of the "name calling" propaganda device
- Chakz, on 06/17/2009, -9/+45***** IT !
- zyklon, on 06/17/2009, -7/+43Oh that silly BillO... Always so ridiculous and dictionary-definition-of-troll-ish.
- hipnerd, on 06/17/2009, -3/+39I love that you immediately descend into the type of coarsened, unreasoning partisan hackery that Ebert was decrying in the article. It's as if you wanted to help by holdiung yourself up as an example of everything that is wrong with political thought and discussion in modern America.
Thank you. - Apokalyps2547, on 06/17/2009, -2/+30I haven't seen scorn like that since "Ultraviolet"
- Hetman, on 06/17/2009, -1/+27The ultra left. Left wing loons, Left wing wackoos, left wing cool aid drinkers, left wing elitists. Got any new material?
- rbalik, on 06/17/2009, -3/+29That may be true, but do you think screaming at a US Senator for a full minute and then interrupting him when he tries to answer is the most constructive way to talk about it?
- Imortus, on 06/17/2009, -1/+27Ebert amazes me. I never really gave him the respect he deserved during his Siskel days, but he's made numerous posts and comments over the last several years that has pivoted him to being one of my favorite personalities.
- ceredron, on 06/17/2009, -5/+31he doesn't. He's just an outspoken liberal with his own TV show... and is somebody the republicans use to try and justify their nutty right wing hosts. >.>
- Drahkir, on 06/17/2009, -2/+26While I completely disagree with Ebert's assertion on video game's status as an art, I have to acknowledge that he makes an intelligent (although fallacious, in my humble opinion) argument. You don't necessarily have to agree with someone to respect them, particularly if it's their opinion is well-argued and respectful of your position.
- jkleinfeld, on 06/17/2009, -3/+26But plimpton777 isn't the sort of guy that would say pwns!
- RuSTeDs, on 06/17/2009, -5/+27"pwn" is seriously overused. These days if any person dare answers BillO even once during a segment he is seen as "pwning Bill O' Reilly". This article less about pwning and more about opening eyes to the consequences of listening to bullies on TV, and how those bullies function as "News commentators". Any sane person would agree that the circle jerk of BillO, Glenn Beck, Hannity and Limbaugh is hate speech and incitement to violence. There has been another instance of right wing violence in Arizona, and the suspect recently said wanting to "starting a revolution against the United States government".
http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2009/06/ ... - dasklaun, on 06/17/2009, -5/+27Okay, so in a career built on thuggish anger, he managed to hit the right target once. Big deal; if you spray gunfire into a crowd, you're likely to hit the person you're aiming for.
- WasabiBomb, on 06/17/2009, -1/+21You know, I bet he would. Ebert is calling O'Reilly out for his tactics, NOT his politics.
- inactive, on 06/18/2009, -1/+21"I stopped right there. "
and that's why you're an uninformed *****
I wonder many times Bill has stopped reading right there because he didn't agree with something?
ignorant people stop reading when they find something they disagree with; intelligent people study all sides of an arguement - LemurDaddy, on 06/17/2009, -3/+23PacoLugi, why do you hate freedom?
- directedition, on 06/17/2009, -1/+21Look at Ebert with cited sources at the end. I'd love to see O'Reilly cite a source.
- TWiTsoldier, on 06/17/2009, -1/+20Except for the fact that his name is, you know, "Jon," and not "John." It's right there in the logo.
- costumemaker, on 06/17/2009, -3/+22This is the internet, we don't like to back up our loudmouths with facts.
- inactive, on 06/17/2009, -1/+20Anger has no place in journalism. that's his point. But because you republiclones lack the critical reading and thinking skills to recognize the entire point of his article, I forgive you.
- FallenTurtles, on 06/17/2009, -1/+20What the hell has he done? He has presented his opinion supported by multiple, valid informational sources. He has 100% validated his commentary. You don't have to agree, but disrespecting the man's ability to make an argument just because his career doesn't focus on business or politics is shallow, weak, and a waste of time.
- inactive, on 06/17/2009, -0/+18Paco, do you even know what socialism is?
- subscriber, on 06/17/2009, -3/+21@drmangrum: Digg is neutral. It is open to anyone who wants to sign up. If the preponderance of comments seem to swing too liberal for your tastes, it is not Digg's "bias" -- it is the average view.
- orlandogeek, on 06/17/2009, -2/+20.. We'll do it LIVE!
- inactive, on 06/17/2009, -1/+18I'm a libertarian, actually. Pigeon-hole much?
- RagManX, on 06/17/2009, -3/+20You really believe a man spending years calling a doctor performing a legal medical service a killer and murderer and saying he has blood on his hands is equivalent to a movie put out in a documentary format which imagines what the country would be like if the then-President had been assassinated? While I admit questioning the wisdom of that movie being made and put out, it's so far from comparable to Bill's regular hate-rage that I'm not sure there's any way to discuss it if you think they are roughly the same.
- fury420, on 06/17/2009, -6/+22at least I can count on what Olbermann says to have at least a shred of truth behind it, and not edited videos to completely change the context & meaning of statements (the edited Obama Cairo speech where he "sympathizes with 9/11 hijackers" or the "muslim nation" crap, or the "we are not a christian nation" quotes come to mind)
I for one dislike Olbermann's worst person in the world segments, especially that over-the-top dramatic/scary music that goes along with it... but at least I can trust that the events he gets all outraged over actually occurred, and I do not need to go check the source to see the rest of the quote with context to make sure its meaning has not been twisted beyond recognition - golferv, on 06/17/2009, -2/+18It's amazing to me that anyone could read that article and look to disqualify what is obviously a well thought out perspective. And yes, he attacks both sides for the same behavior - O'Reilly just has the higher profile and more people know him. I don't read it right or left, I read it that this kind of behavior (Olbermann too) is undermining critical thought.
And that IS a problem. And a growing problem. - EtherGnat, on 06/17/2009, -0/+15You just don't get it. There's nothing wrong with having a point of view. It's about how you express that point of view. Ebert may well lean liberal, there's nothing wrong with that, but he conveys his point of view in a respectful, thoughtful manner.
O'Reilly is conservative. There is nothing wrong with that either. But he is a pompous, hateful jackass about it. That's the problem. - hipnerd, on 06/17/2009, -1/+16@einexile: I understand your point, but I think that while Olbermann does not have many guests form the "loyal opposition," that is still more intellectually honest and valid than bringing on a guest to scream at and belittle without giving them an opportunity to respond.
O'Reilly's show provides much heat and virtually no illumination. Olbermann's show is pretty much solely his opinion, but it is presented as suck. At least he doesn't offer a continual parade of straw men and whipping boys to shore up his misguided opinions and logical fallacies. - sprNmgcHlmt, on 06/17/2009, -2/+17Roger Ebert's got game.
- 1longtime, on 06/17/2009, -1/+15First, "deserves to be shouted at"? Do you somehow feel better watching a rich TV ***** yelling at some other bureaucrat *****? Did that solve anything?
Second, it wasn't just Brave ol' Bill. I just saw another network running that story too. - ApokalypseNow, on 06/17/2009, -1/+15That's just it - O'Reilly and his ilk don't actually report, they're not journalists. They are editorialists and entertainers, masquerading as reporters, attempting to spit-shine the turd that is FOX News's "Fair and Balanced" tag-line. Hey Murdoch, if you perceive that every news organization in America has a liberal bias, making your own organization that far to the right makes it neither fair nor balanced.
Just remember folks, Fox News defended their right to lie on the air *in court*. They cannot be taken as a serious news organization, and neither can anyone on that channel be considered a news reporter. - atroxodisse, on 06/17/2009, -0/+14The Senator pwned Bill in the first clip. I'm surprised O'Reilly didn't continue to yell over him the whole time because he was making great points.
- Ligeti, on 06/17/2009, -1/+15Seriously, which of the propaganda techniques did he not use?
