- bbwolf7, on 03/07/2009, -17/+88FTA: In fact, Bush left the nation in greater peril than it was in on August 6, 2001, when he was informed that Osama bin Laden was "determined to attack in US" and responded, "All right, you've covered your ass now," before deciding to spend the rest of the day fishing. You can look it up.
- redcolumbine, on 03/07/2009, -16/+82The only "victor" was Blackwater, or Ick or Ugh or Aieeee or whatever they're calling themselves these days. But I suppose that's who count$ to the GOP.
- apastafarian, on 03/07/2009, -14/+63This "war" was lost when the decision to wage it was made, probably 10 or more years ago. It is destined to go down as one of if not the worst mistake in US government history. We spent a lot of money, killed a lot of people and have no useful achievements to show for it. But heck, at least we got revenge on Saddam for his audacity to make a unrealistic threat on the life of Bush 41. Certainly that was worth 5000+ US lives, 100K+ Iraqi lives and $800 billion + and counting to the national debt?
- homercles337, on 03/07/2009, -12/+51Well, this is what the GOP does. Look what they did with Reagan. The Reagan Myth is holistically inaccurate and outright dishonest, but somehow most people that dont know the truth think of him as a great president. This, despite the fact that many of our problems today can be traced back to his disastrous policies. The GOP is doing this with Iraq, the economy, and even past great presidents like FDR. They are truly masters of revisionist history. They own the Corporate Media, so spreading lies and propaganda is rather easy. How many times have you heard a wingnut from the right praise Reagan and simultaneously lie about the New Deal? I bet it happens hundreds of times a day here at Digg.
- inactive, on 03/07/2009, -16/+47The reason the GOP has NO credibility, is because they treat the public like they're stupid (well we know for certain that 28% of them are but that's a whole different story). But, like they have for the past 4 years, the public will once again believe their lying eyes as opposed to these a-holes.
- clvngodess, on 03/07/2009, -16/+47Interesting comment: and the place is poised to collapse into genocidal anarchy...
I think the place, Iraq, from the time "shock and awe" began has been in a state of collapse and genocidal anarchy, brought to you by planes loaded with US "democrazy." - clvngodess, on 03/07/2009, -5/+34Don't forget Haliburton. Uncle Dick made a lot of lucre off this little *****. A lot of lucre.
- JenniferInMO, on 03/07/2009, -7/+36LOL. I think its "the uber war profiteer formerly known as Blackwater." It's actually just a symbol that cannot be pronounced = $$
- scottknick, on 03/07/2009, -8/+29clvngodess has it right. You can argue that Iraq was a success, or you can argue that if we pull out there will be a bloodbath, but you can't argue both. I believe the analysts who say there will be violence and intense political oppression when we pull out -- as we must -- and that makes Iraq a gigantic, criminal failure.
- TexasSlim, on 03/08/2009, -9/+28Best revisionist statement of recent history - Investigation (run by Republicans) finds that Sarah Palin violated ethics laws and abused her power - Palin's response? "I'm glad to have been cleared of any wrongdoing". Welcome to truth, Republican style.
- xchrisxsays, on 03/08/2009, -7/+21It's called doublethink, did you learn nothing from 1984?!
- smacksaw, on 03/08/2009, -5/+19In related news, Obama has also inherited the strongest economy in US history. It's his to lose.
- novenator, on 03/07/2009, -5/+18let's hear it for no-bid contracts!
/s - clusterfudge69, on 03/08/2009, -5/+17Tell a big enough Lie enough times and people will believe it.
- clusterfudge69, on 03/08/2009, -5/+16Hello, earth to dumbass. Saddam Hussein was secular ruler. Women had more rights under Saddam then do now. I'm not even sure if this supposed to be sarcasm or just trolling.
- publiclurker, on 03/08/2009, -2/+11Bush Sr. knew.
- kingmanic, on 03/08/2009, -3/+12"Sorry we ARE leaving Iraq in better shape than when we first attacked in 1992 "
No. The infrastructure is slowly being rebuilt but is not yet back to what it was before the first Iraq war. The brutal dictatorship of Hussiens was actually keeping a lip on even more brutal sectarian and ethnic violence. Likely the British should have had better plans when they first divided the area but they had stability under a mad man now they have madness under themselves. When the US leaves the bloodshed will start UNLESS the US does something very clever. I have no idea what they could be.
"and as Clinton let it fester for 8 years. In fact you could say we "owed" the Iraqi people more than that for "installing" Hussein."
I didn't install him and neither did you. The administrations who propped him up are gone. We owe them nothing.
"Revisionist history is grand to say Bush sux0rs. But that's just more Revisionist History du jour."
Objectively: Many US interventions in foreign nations have been debacles. With the exception of Japan, south Korea, and Taiwan. You could include western europe but they were somewhat okay to start with.. - publiclurker, on 03/08/2009, -4/+12I think you have Iraq and Afghanistan confused Einstein.
That aside you are, of course, totally wrong. - altgeeky1, on 03/08/2009, -1/+8Still surprised that Blackwater hasn't registered as a Dubai corporation, like the rest of the Benedict Arnold's...
- inactive, on 03/08/2009, -9/+16War profiter won in iraq, the others are neither crippled or dead.
- Sasha56, on 03/08/2009, -11/+18If you want the best analysis of Iraq, read Robert Fisk. He has a mastery of the facts not only on the ground, but he actually knows his history. Which is the reason we fail everytime we do something stupid like Iraq. The British tried the same thing in 1931 and got their asses kicked. If we had read the history, we may have learned something.
- Sasha56, on 03/08/2009, -4/+11and don't forget punishing Saddam for launching those nasty scud missiles into Israel.....that was another weighty reason advanced by our wonderful neocons.
- inactive, on 03/08/2009, -4/+11"Oh, and Dubya wasn't a war criminal, either."
"Oh, and our economy only collapsed at the threat of Obama winning the election, which is whay it's still so bad!"
"Oh, and the earth is flat, and the sun orbits it!" - CTK14A, on 03/08/2009, -3/+10“'I have done that,' says my memory. 'I cannot have done that' -- says my pride, and remains adamant. At last -- memory yields.” --Friedrich Nietzsche
- maz2331, on 03/08/2009, -1/+8@mbryaynard
They have been true for a VERY long time. The British and French held large "colonies" from the north of Africa all the way to China in the 19th Century. The USSR rolled through Afghanistan in the late 70's, and left in the same type of defeat that the USA did in Vietnam.
If you really want to go back in history, how about the Crusades? They always started out well, and ended badly. - onyxcoltrane, on 03/08/2009, -3/+10Hmmm, I thiught the idea was to bring freedom and democracy to Iraq and Afghanistan not defeat them. You are right though, the US did defeat and kill many innocent civilians.
- twiztidsinz, on 03/08/2009, -3/+9@clvngodess
Cheney made no money *wink wink* from all the contracts that Haliburton won *wink wink*. IF he did *wink wink* that'd be a conflict of interest.
Remember, he did step down as CEO before becoming VicePresident. - jmwood42, on 03/08/2009, -3/+9speaking truth to power? all you are doing is reiterating the talking points "power" fed to you in the first place. you aren't speaking to power, you are merely speaking FOR power.
sure there was consent from congress - consent bought with deliberately inaccurate information masqueraded as intelligence. even Colin Powell has apologized for his part in spreading inaccuracies and gross exaggerations. the congress, press, and citizens of this country were often bullied into accepting the war. when you see how those who questioned the strawman argument we presented (i.e. the french) were mindlessly berated for showing a bit of caution, who can blame the masses for falling in line. and in the end, our troops and their families paid the price for that complacency. how do repay them and their memory? why, welcome them home to a collapsing economy, governors who refuse federal money for the betterment of those in jeopardy (many of whom are troops' families), and by painting over this whole sordid affair with a big sparkly smiley face. THAT is dishonor. there is no dishonor in respecting history - BotchaMcCoola, on 03/08/2009, -1/+6Maybe it can become as modern as our "allies" Saudi Arabia and Egypt, the ones that gave us the 9/11 perpetrators.
- Jeebugorn, on 03/08/2009, -0/+5@woody - that's the truth!
@prophet - violence hasnt gone down in iraq, huh? what proof do you have of that? i am IN iraq, so i think i can provide plenty of proof that it has. i already provided a few points showing that violence has gone down tremendously here. i've felt in more danger in atlanta than i do driving/walking around in iraq. - kingmanic, on 03/08/2009, -3/+8There is no way the US can pour that much military and economic resources on a perpetual basis. The decision to go in was foolish and will remain so. Sometimes it's better to cut your losses instead of throwing good money after bad.
- twiztidsinz, on 03/08/2009, -2/+7XE!
- peters1023, on 03/08/2009, -2/+7touché
- inactive, on 03/08/2009, -5/+10Not to argue whether Iraq was a victory or not, I want to know why invading and deposing a dictator over violation of UN agreements is a war crime yet Clinton bombing the ***** out of Baghdad for the very same exact reason (weapons inspectors, Iraqi government officials playing hide and seek, shooting at US planes in the no fly-zone) got little to no criticism from the world community.
Lesson: its more politically-correct to rain missiles on a tyrant's homeland than to go in and finish him off for good. - waydee, on 03/08/2009, -3/+8Yeah I mean it's not like it wasn't recognised in the first gulf war that defeating Saddam would very likely result in all manner of ***** hitting the fan or anything.
Actually, it was. In recognition of this he was let off with a slap on the wrists and a stern talking to, Bush Sr. being smart enough to know to leave things alone. For whatever reason Bush Jr. and his pals decided things would be different this time around, either by grossly underestimating the true quantity of ***** that would be released or by grossly overestimating their ability to handle it.
If Iraq was a *****, Saddam was the pin. He was a complete bastard of course, a brutal tyrant and an all round very unpleasant chap but as was recognised before, the alternative was much worse. Hundreds of thousands of people have had to die in a conflict that has shown no signs of ending any time soon, families torn apart and the country left in ruins and you call that a victory? Whether the WMD story was a complete fabrication and convenient excuse to take such a risk or a genuine error doesn't matter - the stated goal was always impossible to achieve.
Victory is impossible, the forces that were sent are fighting a different war now and the Iraqi people that were supposed to be liberated are now fighting each other. I don't see how that could be considered a victory even with the wildest stretch of the imagination and creative use of the word. Face it, it's a complete ***** failure. - choochee, on 03/08/2009, -4/+9Here's this weekend's GOP "victory" in Iraq...
Suicide attack kills 28 at police academy in Iraq
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - A suicide bomber killed 28 people and wounded 57 on Sunday at the main police academy in Baghdad, the first major attack in almost a month in the Iraqi capital.

In fact, a week or two ago in a similar comment, I wrote: Anna Nichole Smith, Still Dead! As a slight exageration of the media...well the next day FOXNews was actually running a follow-up story on her death...
My next prediction of distraction: Has Marilyn Manson gone too far?! or Is Telsa's Electric Motor really the work of Satan? - 4321234, on 03/07/2009, -5/+9
http://digg.com/politics/The_White_House_Web_site_ ... - Swivelstick, on 03/08/2009, -0/+4Almost right homercles337 should have stated something along the lines of collaboration between business partners :)
But yeah wow.... - waydee, on 03/08/2009, -2/+6Just like Vietnam has gone down in history as a prime example of a complete *****-up from start to finish, Iraq will too.
And just like with Vietnam, I suspect it is your history that will be considered revisionist. - maz2331, on 03/08/2009, -7/+11Regardless of the politics, the WAR was won in 3 weeks, but the OCCUPATION proved to be impossibly difficult. War is easy - you go in with overwhelming force and firepower and mow the enemy down. Then, the defeated side surrenders and peace ensues.
Except it doesn't always work out like that.
Middle-eastern nations are usually easy for large outside powers to "take" - and impossible to "hold" for long.
Regardless of whether it was right or not to do the war, the poor planning for the aftermath is incompetence of the highest order. It went like this....
1. War!
2. ???
3. Profit!
Except step 2 hosed it up in a big way. Duh.
- BotchaMcCoola, on 03/08/2009, -1/+5Why can't we see more of the news action from the wars and occupations? I hope it is not because Army Recruiting and Lockheed Martin (via the tax payers/China borrowers) are major sponsors.
- JigoroKano, on 03/08/2009, -1/+5Yeah, Iraq has a Sharia constitution now. In Saddam's Iraq women could drive cars and go to school without fear... and they did.
- DAILYCROW, on 03/08/2009, -0/+4Yes the false information was provided by government people of Italy, for a perk.
Read article, link below. Copy paste entire string.
http://news.newamericamedia.org/news/view_article. ... - novenator, on 03/08/2009, -3/+7you ignore the rampant ethnic cleansing and paying off former terrorists that lead to a decrease in violence, it was not simply sending in 20k more troops. Find a mixed neighborhood anywhere in Baghdad, seriously try to. They simply do not exist anymore and the different sects are segregated by walls and checkpoints. What about the sunni tribes that were once labelled as terrorists, but suddenly became our 'friends' and put on the payroll in exchange for pushing out Al Qaeda? Did they suddenly stop being terrorists just because Petraeus said so?
- bsmang, on 03/08/2009, -3/+6So the Iraq war made the world a better place? You just go ahead and keep telling yourself that....
- inactive, on 03/08/2009, -2/+5Goldfarb? I wonder if this guy is related to the people who tricked us into fighting their war...
- fairandtrue, on 03/08/2009, -3/+6we know the names of the 'victors" kbr, halliburton, blackwater and other corporations raking in taxpayer $
- inactive, on 03/08/2009, -2/+5Iraq will collapse just as the American economy has.
It happened during the closing days of the Vietnam war,the malaise and exhaustion of propping up an idea that had lost any meaning.
The word freedom in Iraq isn't thrown around as much as before because people don't really care about a Muslims freedom when their broke, jobless and scrambling for shelter in America.
Freedom for someone else wont pay your bills . - inactive, on 03/08/2009, -2/+5I argue that success can only be determined by the willingness of private investment in the country. Currently Iraq is 152 on the "Ease of Doing business" ranking behind Iran (142). When people would rather do business in Iran than Iraq, I don't think you can claim success.
