- bananamen, on 01/18/2009, -5/+82Yeah, from what I can see here, we have a list of government jobs. What does this have to do with "Why the government gets nothing done"?
- JaseFace, on 01/18/2009, -9/+84People work for the government.
What's the problem? - KrazyMon2, on 01/18/2009, -3/+44What kind of work does a patent administrator do that they made over 100k on average in 2001? Looks like I picked the wrong major. Patent office here I come.
- kamildiouri, on 01/18/2009, -0/+40this ''graph'' makes no sense without a title OR a legend
- Hincapie, on 01/18/2009, -1/+40podiatrists carry firearms?
- mbfielding, on 01/26/2009, -3/+42Why are the people with guns highlighted in red? Does carrying a gun make them get less work done?
- badtzmartin, on 01/18/2009, -2/+40Why are IRS employees authorized to carry firearms?
- hazyeight, on 01/18/2009, -2/+34I got it. Its patients isn't it?
- TVarmy, on 01/18/2009, -0/+27I see the title, but I don't get a major point out of it. Sure, the government employees a lot of people. But how is it red tape? Where's the examples that show they're unproductive? In my experience, some parts are slow and some parts are fast.
- FappleJacks, on 01/18/2009, -0/+24buried for article Title failure...
the number of people working for the government and the positions they hold (various shown), have nothing to do with organizational effectiveness. Granted it is a large bureaucracy, I'd rather see a diagram that shows how many dumb ass protocols each of those listed positions has to go through in order to finalize a task. - TVarmy, on 01/18/2009, -1/+26[insert "foot soldiers" pun here]
- moviemadams, on 01/18/2009, -0/+24Hahaha, remember, they got Al Capone on tax fraud! The IRS has field agents who's job it is to go seize property and records in order to prosecute tax evasion, a criminal charge. Most of the people they go after are drug dealers, so ... the IRS agents get guns. BTW, believe it or not, illegal drugs are deductible as a business expense.
- iliketurtles2, on 01/18/2009, -0/+232.6 million? That seems quite low considering Walmart employs 1.5 million 'associates'.
- FearlessFreep, on 01/18/2009, -2/+251% seems awfully low
- ousthouse, on 01/18/2009, -0/+19It doesn't take into account the millions of contractors who are technically private workers, but who work only on government contracts.
- inactive, on 01/18/2009, -7/+25Paying tax is voluntary. The problem is you want to keep using the society's commodities for free.
- waterboy1628, on 01/18/2009, -1/+17The Global Arms Trade chart is much cooler: http://www.princeton.edu/~ina/infographics/weapons ...
- JamesBondQ, on 01/18/2009, -3/+19So what?
1% of the population works for the government.
That's like saying that in a group of 100 people, 1 person would be responsible for getting mail all over the country, fighting fires, police protection, veterans affairs, FDA regulation, customs....
To me that would seem like a pretty damn useful person if they performed at half the quality we see today (no matter what you're opinion is)
I'm not sure how this graphic is supposed to open my eyes. - casey148, on 01/18/2009, -1/+17Because some people in the army like to maintain their regular attendance at religious services.
From goarmy.com, they are responsible for:
* Overseeing a full program of religious ministries, including workshops, counseling sessions, religious education and special events.
* Officiate at official ceremonies such as military functions, funerals, and memorials.
* Provide religious ministry to a variety of armed service personnel and civilians from the US, foreign nations, and agencies. - SillyRabbits, on 01/18/2009, -0/+14They usually hold advanced degrees in various fields of science and engineering. They would make just as much, or even more, in private industry.
- diggface5000, on 01/18/2009, -0/+14Yeah, I fail to see the "gotcha" here...
- Issius, on 01/18/2009, -0/+13That's why drug dealers should pay all of their taxes every year. Hire a good accountant and make sure everything is perfect. They hardly ever get in trouble for the drug trafficking, it's always tax evasion and tax fraud that hurt the most.
- jkleinfeld, on 01/18/2009, -6/+19Why, in a secular country like the United States, are there chaplains paid for by the US gov't?
- colincornaby, on 01/18/2009, -2/+15Because we're supposed to be scared of them.
I know I'm scared of the armed court clerks, forest service agents, and postal inspection agents. They are obviously part of some vast conspiracy.[/sarcasm] - Nijak, on 01/18/2009, -3/+16WTF? What are you complainning about? in Belgium, 10% of the population works for the government ...
- Paulish, on 01/18/2009, -0/+11It also jails 1% of the population.
- FappleJacks, on 01/18/2009, -4/+16They're lawyers so the salary is about right.
- jakereilly, on 01/19/2009, -0/+12Uh, what does this have to do with red tape?
All I see are government offices.
Lame. Buried. - GovernmentsGun, on 01/18/2009, -8/+19So they can shoot you if you don't pay your voluntary taxes.
- AlanLivingston, on 01/18/2009, -0/+10FUD from the author.
- shupy, on 01/18/2009, -1/+10Does anyone remember Eliot Ness and Al Capone and the Untouchables?
The IRS was used to get organized crime figures when they could not get adequate evidence of crimes. IRS special agents are tasked with investigating any business that would be considered capable of laundering large sums of money. When IRS agents are tasked with investigating a potential criminal front, they function just like FBI agents. But they are basically accountants with guns.
IRS and the Labor department are both part of law enforcement.
I have a family member who works for Labor, used to be IRS. She received weapons training at Quantico. - atomsky, on 01/18/2009, -0/+9Princeton coulda used a better designer, that font isn't very nice to read as a wall of text...
- danwgre, on 01/18/2009, -2/+11Anybody notice the postal service makes up nearly a third of all those jobs? and the primary purpose of those employees is deliver junk mail.
- TVarmy, on 01/18/2009, -2/+10To be fair, they are self sufficient. The post office normally receives no federal or state aid, which is why stamps keep going up in price. They did recently ask for a bailout, but who isn't? The key thing is that the post office isn't for profit and focuses on "first class" mail, which is why it's actually pretty cheap. Plus, they don't really have duties they can offload on other departments, and the private sector does not have an option that's nearly as cheap for paper mail.
- Richandler, on 01/18/2009, -9/+17Federal Income tax doesn't pay for roads or social security. It also doesn't pay for education, parks or anything else used by the average person.
- AmusedToDeath, on 01/19/2009, -0/+8Because to the type of people that populate the Princeton campus, guns are EEEEVVVVIIIIILLLLLL and SSSCCAAARRRYYYY.
- BabyWookie, on 01/18/2009, -3/+10You know what the percentage of people employed by the government in USSR was? 100%. 1% seems very reasonable.
- CTK14A, on 01/18/2009, -2/+9If anything I'm looking at a display of why minarchism isn't always the right approach. I'm glad we have economists to advise us, a well-functioning post office, and preservationists of our national history.
- malex, on 01/18/2009, -5/+11Except for the ones that do...
Hey, that's a cool Internet you're using. Where did it come from again? - joank, on 01/19/2009, -0/+6Ever tried to collect a debt?
It can get vicious. - inactive, on 01/19/2009, -0/+6same reason the people who collect for any other mobsters do.
- Richandler, on 01/18/2009, -0/+6Also I notice a lack of Senate and House Members along with all of their staffs. And where are the Federal Reserve employees...
- Mongoose, on 01/18/2009, -0/+5Shouldn't a graphic making the argument that government is too disparate and disorganized to complete anything be somewhat organized and concise itself?
- BoneStamp, on 01/19/2009, -0/+6They don't want smart pot smokers taking good jobs away from dumb incapable people.
- Richandler, on 01/18/2009, -2/+8This number is inaccurate. It fails to account for the CIA, military, and local governments. That number grows much higher, closer to 10 million+. Unfortunately most of these jobs are either destructive or don't actually produce anything and in some cases hinder production.
- inactive, on 01/19/2009, -0/+5First thing I would axe is the DEA.
- casey148, on 01/18/2009, -2/+7I'd argue that that isn't the government's job. I'd go on to say that the government's job is to provide us the opportunity to improve our own well being, but this isn't a popular opinion on digg, anyway.
- AlanLivingston, on 01/18/2009, -0/+5...and then I think they're also attorneys.
- malex, on 01/18/2009, -3/+8Are you criticizing something specific that was actually done or said, or are you just making stuff up to whine about?
