Reagan Embraced Free Trade and Immigration
cato.org — Reagan's vision of an America open to commerce and peaceful, hardworking immigrants contradicts the anti-trade and anti-immigration views espoused by Lou Dobbs, Bill O'Reilly, Pat Buchanan, Rep. Tom Tancredo of Colorado, and many others who claim to speak for the conservative causes Reagan largely defined.

It is really saddening to me seeing such hostility towards immigrants. These people simply want a better life for themselves and their families, how can we blame them for that? I don't understand it at all. It's a result of ignorance, that's the only way that I can explain it.
It's a big issue for me, considering that my family came to the United States in the early 20th century, I understand and empathize with current and future immigrants. I'm sure that there were ignorant people in the country when my family came over that argued similarly to these modern day citizens that speak out against immigration. - LonewackoDotCom, on 05/02/2008, -1/+3Didn't read the link, but here's more on the loony author:
http://www.nationalreview.com/comment/comment-font ... - davidmesaaz, on 05/03/2008, -0/+2This article and the many immigration opponents create this immigration straw man argument. If for immigration then you not for law and order which is one of the key tenets of our society. Reagan and many other conservatives were pushing for is that too many regulation make all of us criminals. While the tax code is the law of the land the sheer complexity of it how it takes skilled bureaucrats to navigate the code and to penalize those who break one of a million laws. We all benefit when by not ignoring the laws but eliminating the complexity.
Its a false delima to assume that either you are for respecting the rule of law or you are for amnesty lawlessness and anarchy. The solution is to make it easier for people to obey the law. When the government bureacy takes 5-10 years to process and grant citzenship request that shows the inefficiency and of the government. When the government intervenes between employers and employees that have already agreed on the terms of employment shouldn't the government find a legal solution and encourage such arangements? In the current situation its wrong because the government says its wrong.
People would not come here illegally if it were easier to come here legally. Then the only people crossing the border illegally would be the the terrorists described in the link above. While the author points out that there have been terrorists that have come in the US what is he suggesting that we totally eliminate all immigration into the United States?
We are in a global war for talent and yet we are restricting our immigration to 60,000 a year down from 350,000 just a few years ago. Now other countries are emulating the open society of the US and are having great results.
