- brad3378, on 11/03/2009, -17/+126Rise of the Republican?
I'll believe it when I see it.
/disgusted ex Republican - AubreyMaturin, on 11/03/2009, -31/+123By "rise" you presumably mean rise from a 19% party identification rate, to a 21...perhaps even 22% rate?
LMFAO. - dafragsta, on 11/03/2009, -20/+91WSJ may as well be Fox News anymore. Same owner, same agenda. It's William Randolph Murdoch's paper. If the headline's big enough it makes the news big enough. (hence the caps)
- bemenaker, on 11/03/2009, -6/+54If the Republicans want to come back, they need to ditch the far right that doesn't represent the majority of us, look into their past and find the principles that they used to stand for. Granted both sides sell out to corporate interests, and the GOP has historically been the party of big business, at least in my lifetime, they need to ditch ultra-conservatism. America is not a far right country, yet somehow, this party has become lost in the land of the Christian Taliban.
As an independent, I would like to see the GOP wake up, or die off and a moderate Libertarian party spring up in it's place. The Libertarians have always been too radical to become mainstream. The first of these too groups to moderate will become the next party in power.
We're never in a good spot when one party controls everything. - ontain, on 11/03/2009, -12/+60Rise of the nuts maybe. they seem to be pushing all the moderates out. it's going to be a split in the Republicans.
- CaughtThinking, on 11/03/2009, -19/+61The GOP? Those guys that only know how to cut taxes and blow a trillion dollars on a war that produces more dictators down the line?
Those guys SUCK! - AubreyMaturin, on 11/03/2009, -19/+61Name a right that that you've lost under Obama.
:crickets: - IClavdivs, on 11/03/2009, -8/+44I've always considered myself an independent, but I'm voting straight Democrat because the fundamentalists on the right scare the crap out of me, and I don't want to take the risk of having that nonsense in power.
- AubreyMaturin, on 11/03/2009, -16/+45Oh? Name a right you would lose under that.
:crickets: (again) - homercles337, on 11/03/2009, -10/+34I love how all these right-wing media outlets make ***** up to try to influence the public. They did it in 2006, then again in 2008, and now they are ratcheting up their frequency.
- aliengoods, on 11/03/2009, -10/+34The northern New York race is a joke. They're trying to make a big deal out of it, but that district has only sent Republicans to Congress since 1853. In other words, if the Democrats even have a shot, they don't have to worry.
- TheSwashbuckler, on 11/03/2009, -5/+28"we just lost sight of it for a second."
No, for the eight long years of the Bush administration. - Haptick, on 11/03/2009, -5/+27This is a joke, right? I can't speak for the NJ or NY races, but Deeds (D) is losing in the polls to McDonnell (R) because he's run a terrible campaign and his policy platform differs very little from McDonnell's--not because the GOP is having a resurgence of popularity. As long as the State Democratic Party continues to "not get it" when it comes to picking candidates, then there is little reason to vote for them, and most democrats and independents in VA seem to feel that way as well.
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 11/03/2009, -7/+29I don't get that impression from the Democrats at all, but either way it seems better than the Republican line "If you don't agree with us then you're a terrorist, socialist, communist, Nazi hippie who hates freedom!"
- Balath, on 11/03/2009, -1/+22As a lifelong Virginian:
Deeds just isn't going to beat McDonnell in VA. I'll gladly eat those words if he does, but VA has a history of swinging back and forth between Democrat and Republican governors. It isn't a referendum on the President and it's definitely not a referendum on the Republican party. It's just politics as usual in Virginia; many predicted that a Republican would be VA's next governor before the Democratic primaries of the last presidential election were over. - 3nder99, on 11/03/2009, -4/+23I understand exactly where you are coming from, but I'm a Democrat who will be voting independent. There really is no good choice.
- 5thdigg, on 11/03/2009, -7/+25Notice the insurgence of propaganda from Murdoch's camp on digg lately? It's pretty pronounced. Digg has been bought and taken over by mainstream media groups. Not hard to do, pay a bunch of people to post up winger articles, then they all digg each other up to the front page.
- ThantiK, on 11/03/2009, -5/+22It's sad anymore that I can't even tell if people are being sarcastic when people say things like "the republicans will win today simply because the democrats have become an insane bunch of power mad commie idiots"
I mean, it looks like satire, it reads like satire, but I still have this strange sensation that whoever said it, actually believes it. When your party is full of THIS kind of stuff...it really boggles the mind. - acknotSW, on 11/03/2009, -5/+21I agree, I considered myself a republican for most of my 20's, then bush happened and now I'm an independent.
The republican party HAS to separate its religious views from the political realities of today if it ever hopes to become relevant again.
Abortion - sorry, you lost that one, it's over.
Lower taxes - you won, move on to something else. I'm paying less in taxes now than I did when I was 20 even though I'm making more than 5 times as much.
Gay Marriage - Grow the ***** up, gay marriage is not going to destroy traditional marriage anymore then it is going to be the ruination of the country or lead to people wanting to marry goats.
Unfortunately, I think the only way to get that separation is to have a clean split between the religious nuts and the socially moderate, fiscally conservative people in the party. - TheNik, on 11/03/2009, -1/+16Conservative != Republican
He said party identification rate. That poll is about ideologies. - aliengoods, on 11/03/2009, -9/+24After 8 years of darkness, to call the encroaching shadows light blows my mind.
- WasabiBomb, on 11/03/2009, -7/+21I find it fairly amusing that the people who think Ron Paul can save the US are the same people who say that Democrats "worship" Obama.
- noblepaladin, on 11/03/2009, -4/+18More likely around 8-10 years down the road, the Republican party will have evolved. They need to dump the lunatics. Ron Paul is a popular Republican, but he doesn't conform with what the Republican party is doing right now. But in the long run, we will still have a lot of problems (we always do). And since the Democrats are in power, they will take most of the blame.
This always happens in politics, the pendulum swings back and forth. A problem occurs, and the party in power takes the hit for it whether they are responsible or not. Often they are responsible because politicians are inefficient and often idiots. I have a feeling that 8 years down the road, a hot topic would be massively increasing taxes and/or inflation as the ~60 trillion needed for Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, and other social programs for the next 30 years start becoming a problem. Not really Obama's problem, as this has been building up for many decades, but he will get heat for it.
Also, remember the majority of Americans voted for Bush after they had him for one term. People knew exactly what they were getting. But now they all pretend that they never voted for him. Opinions change fast in politics. - homercles337, on 11/03/2009, -5/+18did you forget this? /s
- Propethic, on 11/03/2009, -1/+14I don't want to go off on a rent here but
"Bush is not the president yet you still feel it necessary to being him up."
It's funny that the instant he left office people were saying this - arkwald, on 11/03/2009, -7/+20I dunno if they are really so split. I mean they are trying to stay on the message that Obama is a socialist who is going to steal your money. I am not hearing too much else about a push for keeping gays down or how we need to blow up and subjugate other countries. I mean if you wanted to create a republican brand you could go with...
Republicans: Not above bribing you or pushing racism, homophobia and xenophobia since 1980. - homercles337, on 11/03/2009, -5/+17***** you and your god damn retarded ideas. Im as much an American as you are--maybe more so. Take your concept of "real" Americans, the "real" economy and shove them up your ass.
- arkwald, on 11/03/2009, -8/+20The real America where we bow to our lord and savior the CEO and shareholder. A land of merry song such as:
We rape and pillage
As much as we can
Tax loop holes for us
High prices for you
We'll take as much of that dough you have
And give your jobs to peasants worse off then you
We hate competition and prefer it if
You only buy everything from one of us handful
We rape and pillage
As much as we can
Tax loop holes for us
High prices for you
We're too big to fail
and ready to screw
Where ever we can
It's only theft when we say its so
We rape and pillage
As much as we can
Tax loop holes for us
High prices for you
Forget the environment
Forget free trade
When we call the shots you know
We will do what we will to rob you too
We rape and pillage
As much as we can
Tax loop holes for us
High prices for you - Propethic, on 11/03/2009, -2/+14Sorry but Bush ruined the chances for a republican president for maybe 2 decades, I hope your next candidate isn't 80 years old and can answer debate questions without looking like a 12 year old, so far I don't see anyone who fits the bill who isn't also hated by just about every democrat
- BasalCellBossk, on 11/03/2009, -3/+14"I see the major hate between the Democrats and Republicans... starting when the Dems insisted that Bush stole the first election."
It started when he became a war criminal. - 3nder99, on 11/03/2009, -8/+19Pelosi/Reid and the Democratic Congress is doing it for them. Obama doesn't really have much choice on what Congress does, he either accedes to them or gets none of his proposals added.
- gbudavid, on 11/03/2009, -5/+16I don't know They seem very adept at snatching defeat from the jaws of victory... and the RNC chair is not a help
- nickymouse, on 11/03/2009, -2/+13The district overwhelmingly voted for Obama in 2008.
- jiggawatt, on 11/03/2009, -6/+17It's laughable how Republicans cling to power and want to impose their petty little ***** on everyone .
It's as if the entire country is being run by loser high school administrators... and people have had it
-- the Democrats will win today simply because the Republicans have become an insane bunch of power mad fascist idiots
There I fixed it for you - TheNik, on 11/03/2009, -2/+13There are people with good enough memories to remember the era of socialism/communism America went through those years back?
You have no idea what socialism is. - SpeedSteamBoat, on 11/03/2009, -8/+18That's not what he said.
Thing have definitely gotten worse since it became a Murdoch property. While the Opinion section was always a den of right-wingers liars, that bias now spills over into the "news" portion of the paper as well. Hence, just like Fox News. - mijopo, on 11/03/2009, -2/+12see, just another lazy conservative with their sense of entitlement waiting for a handout
- BearKill, on 11/03/2009, -1/+11Have to stop thinking GOP vs. Dem and start thinking along the lines of "do I believe in the same things this candidate supports? Does his/her voting record match my interests?" Then you will not be duped by party nonsense.
- wangalicious, on 11/03/2009, -0/+10I'd say I'm still more in line with republican views, it's just a shame the neo-cons took over and mucked everything up.
But I'm with 3nder, there really is no good choice. - 46n09, on 11/03/2009, -6/+16Taliban or conservative, what's the difference? Both groups set themselves up as the spiritual authority of the countries they want to occupy and manipulate for their own agendas, which have nothing to do with God as they would have you believe. Rupert Murdoch and Osama bin Laden are not so different. Tainted by greed, Thrush, Limburger and Sarah PayMe, are the pawns Murdoch uses to advance his self serving agenda. Women need not fear that they will be forced to wear berkas here in the USA. With the republicans voting record on womens issues, it is more likely they will be forced to wear pasties and G-strings.
Recovering Republican - ThantiK, on 11/03/2009, -6/+16Actually, to me, it seems like the republicans are showing that they are mouth-breathing inbred stupid idiots all on their own.
- IKORKYI, on 11/03/2009, -2/+11i'm a conservative but an independent. i favor fiscal responsibility and lean libertarian, however, don't favor the republican religious movement.
- SchmuckofNI, on 11/03/2009, -2/+11I was hoping more of the rise of the third party...
- gsm54321, on 11/03/2009, -1/+10I really don't know where to start with that post.
"Most Dems are young kids with little real world experience or people who want something for nothing."
So a baseless stereotype that I can guarantee you is wrong. Followed by another:
"You guys do that, name call and hate anyone not in step with your thinking."
Here's a quick question, how many liberals insualted Bush when he called for the olympics in The states, or when he increased AIDS funding to Africa? And how many retards, i mean republicans, have gone crazy and thrown nothing more then accusations at Obama. I could go on for about 5 pages about how retarded your worldview is, but I'm just going to block you, I'm so tired of this crap.
BTW, Jimmy Carter started all the major deregulation programs that Reagan took credit for. - jdenzer, on 11/03/2009, -3/+12@Bearkill
A Republican has held that position since 1853. And now the Conservative party has caused the GOP candidate to drop out. It seems more like the repudiation of the GOP.
Even someone who doesn't follow politics, can see that clearly. - TimtheTaxMan, on 11/03/2009, -20/+29It's too bad we won’t see a rise in the Libertarian party, then we would finally see some real change. Our two options now are the Borrow and Spend Party (R) or the Tax and Spend Party (D).
- Taiyoryu, on 11/03/2009, -0/+8I would be curious if one of the polls would ask self-identified Republicans what it is to be a Republican. Then compare that to what the Republican party claims its tenets are. For an interesting sidebar, compare that poll to what the Republican tenets have been over time.
Turn-about is fair play so the poll can do the same for any political party. I'm curious to see what the disparity is between the personal tenets people hold and the tenets of the association they claim to have. - magstheaxe, on 11/03/2009, -8/+16Methinks the WSJ is engaging in some wishful thinking.
- ironhide, on 11/03/2009, -3/+11Get it yourself bimbo.
- ocean17, on 11/03/2009, -3/+11Absolutely, I wonder what this new 'astroturf click / digging' will be nicknamed?
I think I've buried more articles in the last 2 months than the last 2 years. -

What is Digg?
