- littleblckheart, on 10/12/2007, -35/+247Too bad such quotes are beyond comprehension for douche bag fascists like Bill O'Reilly.
- Itazura, on 10/12/2007, -16/+161Pretty much every President that was succesful or accomplished historical goals has had a quote that can be interpreted as "Bush is a complete retard", most likely because he is in fact, a complete retard.
- populist, on 10/12/2007, -14/+155no fan of teddy, but the man said it right with that one!
- danmcinerney, on 10/12/2007, -31/+166"Good thing he said it some one hundred years ago. Relevant news."
Yeah losers. This was written back when America was still a democracy. - BowieX, on 10/12/2007, -25/+138I can see it now...
COLBERT: It sounds convincing enough, nation, but listen to how his logic falls through. If we are to believe what Teddy said, then we *shouldn't* believe what he said, as that would be to "stand by the President, right or wrong." And should we really trust a President who talks in confusing paradoxes? The great and noble thing about Bush is that he gets confused so that none of *us* have to. Haven't you read all those embarassing Bushisms and press-conference stuff-ups? Those are Christ-like manifestations of his delivering us from confusion. America, this is the kind of leader that deserves the utmost patriotism, so I'm afraid Mr Roosevelt's speech just doesn't hold water. - guarana, on 10/12/2007, -7/+89Not just a republic... a Constitional Republic
- mrharvey518, on 10/12/2007, -4/+80I have a better one.
"Americans can always be counted on to do the right thing...after they have exhausted all other possibilities."
-- Winston Churchill - JAVandiver, on 10/12/2007, -2/+76Here is a better T.R. quote:
"The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." - spyd3rweb, on 10/12/2007, -23/+88republic... not democracy
- Itazura, on 10/12/2007, -5/+64"Anyway that quote mainly belongs in old conservative days when almost everyone agreed with each other.'
lol! you are funny, you should read a history book above the high school level and see just how many people hated good ol' Teddy back then. - allaboutdatiki, on 10/12/2007, -4/+63Teddy's monocle and big moustache look is way cool.
- recipher, on 10/12/2007, -1/+59Thought this was interesting too.
"Democratic nations must try to find ways to starve the terrorist and the hijacker of the oxygen of publicity on which they depend."
We gave and continue to give them more publicity than Paris Hilton's decaying crotch. - yuhwei, on 10/12/2007, -5/+59"Good thing he said it some one hundred years ago. Relevant news."
Yeah....just as relevant as something written about 230 years ago...started with something like "We, The People..."
Dumbass. - polyGone, on 10/12/2007, -10/+60im an idiot digg down
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+54"Anyway that quote mainly belongs in old conservative days when almost everyone agreed with each other."
This takes the cake as the dumbest thing ever to have been written on digg. - littlebylittle, on 10/12/2007, -4/+52http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States#Government_and_politics
[Elements of Both]
The United States is the world's oldest surviving federation. Its government relies on representative democracy through a congressional system under a set of powers specified by its Constitution, which was a replacement of the original constitution, the Articles of Confederation, which was in effect from 1781-1788. However, it is "not a simple representative democracy, but a constitutional republic in which majority rule is tempered by minority rights protected by law."[32] - dishonest, on 10/12/2007, -6/+49You see "Republicans," this is what a real Republican sounds like. Odd, isn't it?
Of course he'd never make it in the modern GOP. Some rich boy jerkoff would use his money to make insane allegations about Roosevelt's adopted kid's race or something, and that'd force Roosevelt to become a company man. Kinda like someone else I once respected. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -20/+59Our country lives its life to the way men documented and stated it shall be lived over 200 years ago. Is that relevant enough? Or do you have more ignorance to spread?
- graystar, on 10/12/2007, -6/+44Bush already has plenty of quotes basically saying Bush is a retard.
- DrunkPikachu, on 10/12/2007, -8/+42That's it, I'm voting straight Bull Moose party next election.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -17/+51@Foxhaze
Well if you look at it that way then Jesus also said a few things over "a hundred years ago". How "relevant" is that to today's society? - Erowid, on 10/12/2007, -17/+45@sheonger: "It's too soon to say that "Bush is a complete retard.""
No it's not. - Vermifax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28"Do not question Bush's patriotism or his conviction.
You may question his competencies, experience, his ability to accommodate adversity and diversity."
Here's a bigger saw for the "ice-cutting".
I, as a tax-paying, voter-registered, married father of two with over five generations of U.S. citizenship in my heritage will continue to questions whatever the ***** I want about any elected officials in this here United States of America. You got me...?
Nevermind that Dubya stole both elections (with much assistance) but, my tax dollars help fund his Oil Crusades AND pay his salary. I reserved the Constitutional right to question the competence or agenda of anyone, (Dem, GOP, etc.) hired by this country to make it better!
No true patriot would decimate the Bill of Rights in plain sight just to absolve himself of high crimes and treason.
Bush, Cheney and the rest of Arkham Asylum are traitors against the United States of America and I'm offended by every minute they spend in Government and in the Corporate world.
I am a Patriotic American Citizen and I not recognize George W. Bush as are rightfully elected leader. - littlebylittle, on 10/12/2007, -4/+31The current bastardized version of the GOP is neither "Grand" nor Conservative.
- The_Dude, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28Teddy was a real aristocrat. A man of culture, intelligence, and integrity. He was a real statesman, a warrior, and an intellectual. He wrote quite a few books himself. He also put his neck on the line for a black person back when that was political suicide. He took a stand for the country by busting up the trusts.
Basically Bush is nothing compared to him, and barely deserves to breath the air. A paramicium. A single-celled life form. A plant. - davidlow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25"no fan of Teddy": The irony is, Teddy wanted you to say that.
- halleyscomet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24@The_Dude
To be fair, MOST of us measure up poorly when compared to Theodore Roosevelt.
He started off as a sickly, bookish youth crippled by asthma and allergies. He decided to address this by moving to the frontier, living in a cabin and becoming a mountain man for a few years. After doing this for a few years, he decided to join the military. He then became a war hero.
It's be like the spindly kid with braces and 40 daily medications deciding to join the peace core, stay for ten years go on to join the marines and end up the hero of several battles in a major war.
Oh, and he's basically responsible for the existence of national parks and nature preserves in the USA.
There just aren't many men like Theodore Roosevelt today. - fuzzmeister, on 10/12/2007, -9/+33hahahahahHAHAHAHAHA
Thanks, I needed a laugh like that. - bemenaker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26If someone insulted Teddy's kid, I would have expected Teddy to kick their teeth in. Teddy was a rough and tumble kind of guy.

Wow, really? O'Reilly isn't constantly and nonstop foaming at the mouth?

Rich boy jerk-off!!!!
Dude, he got shot during a speech, and kept talking!!! That is the definition of hardcore,
Here is what he said after being shot: "I don't know whether you fully understand that I have just been shot; but it takes more than that to kill a Bull Moose"
He was a lot of things but a "Rich boy jerk-off" he was not! - vwvwvw, on 10/12/2007, -10/+30If by peace, you mean civil war in Iraq and growing bank accounts for his buddies, then yes, you are correct.
- Reap, on 10/12/2007, -10/+28lol, nice joke
Oh, wait, were you serious? - jamin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Reminds me of something G.K. Chesterton wrote:
"My country, right or wrong" is a thing that no patriot would think
of saying, except in a desperate case. It is like saying "My mother,
drunk or sober." - littlebylittle, on 10/12/2007, -8/+25... or according to Cheney, they are "Terrorist Supporters."
- CGreen, on 10/12/2007, -10/+25If usaland was a democracy then Al Gore would have won since he got the majority of the votes (I'm not writing about the controversy with the chads and such). The electoral votes however made it such that even though a majority had voted for him the minority won. Thus by definition, usaland is not a democracy.

>It's when people devolve into ad hominin attacks that piss me off. Unfortunately, that's mostly all I hear on digg. **looks at littleblkheart**
It's funny you say that, after the UN thread here that was gamed by the LGF crowd. The question that someone posed was "If not the UN, then what?" He was modded down initially while a constant and steady drumbeat of attacking the UN was modded through the ceiling. I pointed out that we shouldn't expect to have any influence on the Council on Human Rights since under Bush we've lost our seat (first time in half a century) so that the first step to influencing the council would be to get our seat back.
I was modded to -50 for that.
The shriekfest went on unabated. I mean, we're not talking an order of magnitude of ad homs and screaming, we're talking an entirely different universe. Yet you managed to find one or two guys in this thread who you feel posted ad homs.
Seriously, check out the UN thread and get back to us about the log in your eye. - kaykfrink, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14You people scare me. Difference in opinion is one thing, but if you are going to participate in political discussions then PLEASE have an understanding of the core values and concepts that this nation was founded on.
To those who say the US is not a democracy it is a republic, a republic is a form of democracy. Do not speak of these systems as if they are mutually exclusive.
To those who say the Constitution is irrelevant today, why? The Constitution is a pretty simple document that outlines the most important ideals of this country. It was written so that it only establishes concepts, such as a government that is held accountable to the people. How are these concepts any less relevant today? The moment that we as a nation seriously consider abolishing ideas such as government accountability and personal rights is also the moment we turn our backs on our own history. Unfortunately, that happened a while ago and nobody seemed to notice. - d00ley, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17"republic... not democracy"
Can you idiots stop saying this? A Republic is a form of democracy. - CaspianXth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14What? You mean we CAN criticize the president? Quick! Someone alert the media! They'd want to know about this!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18he's no patriot - only to the rich and very white - and ignorant hicks like you
and he has the audacity to question my patriotism?
screw you! - reed311, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18If by "Republican" you mean "Democrat". When Teddy Rosevelt the Republican party shared the ideals of the Democratic party today. They flip-flopped roles in the 20th century.
- littlebylittle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Your above quote from Teddy's "Speech at the Sorbonne" is great ...
None of it applies to Bush or Cheney, both draft-dodging blue-blood cowards and war profiteering criminals. Teddy would have taken both of them to the woodshed by their ears (at the same time). - nakba, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15Big Stick Teddy!

>It's too soon to say that "Bush is a complete retard." Who knows, somewhere in the future, he might be right about some things.. of course if he isn't, then we have all the reasons to say he is a retard. But it's just too early to say.
Well historians already are almost united in saying that he's the worst president ever, he's come out publicly in favor of "allowing gynecologists to spread their love across the nation" and he's managed to begin his own perfect little Vietnam.
No, it's really not too early to say. - bemenaker, on 10/12/2007, -13/+23BowieX, that is hilarious, your speech sounds just like him. :)
Amen Teddy!!
And yes, technically we live in a republic, but we as a country have always called it a democracy, so quit whining about it. - halleyscomet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11@keymanjim
"It like when liberals say they support our troops and then call them baby killers."
You're melding two different wars in your head.
Soldiers were called "Baby killers" during Vietnam. No one I've heard is calling them that today. The current anti-war trend is to "Support the troops, bring them home." People in general felt so guilty over the treatment of Vietnam vets, that today, the soldiers are held largely blameless. The blame is placed upon the politicians who sent them there.
I have yet to hear a single person call out to "Support the troops" and then call them baby killers. You're either letting some talk radio created straw man serve as your image of Liberals, or applying the statements of one or two lunatics to all Liberals.
"Or say they love our country and then strive to turn it into a socialist ***** hole."
You do realize of course that most the people collecting welfare are war vets or soldiers, many FROM the Vietnam war, don't you? A lot of soldiers collect food stamps.
I'd also like to point out that the budget was balanced before Bush took office, and that the Republican Administration has bloated government spending to create the largest deficit in US history. It's been decades since the Republicans were the "Deficit Hawks." That title is currently held, frightening enough, by the Democrats. -
