It is instructive that Washington’s propaganda framework is reflexively accepted, apparently without notice, in US and other Western commentary and reporting, apart from the marginal fringe of what is called ‘the loony left.” What is considered “criticism” is skepticism as to whether all of Washington’s charges about Iranian aggression in Iraq are true. It might be an interesting research project to see how closely the propaganda of Russia, Nazi Germany, and other aggressors and occupiers matched the standards of today’s liberal press and commentators..
The comparisons are of course unfair. Unlike German and Russian occupiers, American forces are in Iraq by right, on the principle, too obvious even to enunciate, that the US owns the world. Therefore, as a matter of elementary logic, the US cannot invade and occupy another country. The US can only defend and liberate others. No other category exists. Predecessors, including the most monstrous, have commonly sworn by the same principle, but again there is an obvious difference: they were Wrong, and we are Right. QED.
Another comparison comes to mind, which is studiously ignored when we are sternly admonished of the ominous consequences that might follow withdrawal of US troops from Iraq. The preferred analogy is Indochina, highlighted in a shameful speech by the President on August 22. That analogy can perhaps pass muster among those who have succeeded in effacing from their minds the record of US actions in Indochina, including the destruction of much of Vietnam and the murderous bombing of Laos and Cambodia as the US began its withdrawal from the wreckage of South Vietnam. In Cambodia, the bombing was in accord with Kissinger’s genocidal orders: “anything that flies on anything that moves” – actions that drove “an enraged populace into the arms of an insurgency [the Khmer Rouge] that had enjoyed relatively little support before the Kissinger-Nixon bombing was inaugurated,” as Cambodia specialists Owen Taylor and Ben Kiernan observe in a highly important study that passed virtually without notice, in which they reveal that the bombing was five times the incredible level reported earlier, greater than all allied bombing in World War II. Completely suppressing all relevant facts, it is then possible for the President and many commentators to present Khmer Rouge crimes as a justification for continuing to devastate Iraq.
But although the grotesque Indochina analogy receives much attention, the obvious analogy is ignored: the Russian withdrawal from Afghanistan, which, as Soviet analysts predicted, led to shocking violence and destruction as the country was taken over by Reagan's favorites, who amused themselves by such acts as throwing acid in the faces of women in Kabul they regarded as too liberated, and then virtually destroyed the city and much else, creating such havoc and terror that the population actually welcomed the Taliban. That analogy could indeed be invoked without utter absurdity by advocates of “staying the course,” but evidently it is best forgotten. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9You know, the irony is that even the truth can be maligned when it doesn't satisfy another's agenda or philosophy.
Sad isn't it? :-(...Thanks for sharing. - kaelyiesta, on 10/20/2007, -1/+9populistAmerica.com indeed. Even though I know that position by heart, its still nice to see it put into context of todays corruption. I really liked this:
I hope that you'll keep this short-list of false government promises in mind when you hear politicians from both sides of the aisle tell you:
* The War on Terrorism will make America safe.
* A national sales tax will be equal and fair for everyone.
* A military draft will help prevent future wars.
* Campaign finance reform will end corruption in politics.
* Gun-control laws will keep guns away from criminals.
* NAFTA, CAFTA, the WTO and FTAA are free trade agreements.
* Showing your papers will protect you.
* Iran is the world's greatest threat. - Shorties, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Lets see how much spam and porn can I sign up for to that address...

- brandonace, on 10/20/2007, -4/+7Politicians : Translating In Progress...........................Beep................Beep.................Satan's Minions
Contrary to common Christian thought, Satan is not hiding under our beds waiting to steal our souls. To be sure, he was under some beds, but this number does not exceed ten thousand. Satan carefully, and with great deliberation, cherry picked those individuals (Also Known As Politicians) he wished in his service and each of these because they would contribute towards a greater goal; the destruction of Earth's timeline. - proclaimLiberty, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Good list of lies. Everyone lies, but it is much more serious when a public official lies, because their lies often cost people their lives.
- ByteGuerilla, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2"They said we had to go into Iraq 'cause they're the most dangerous ***** on Earth. If they're so dangerous, how come it only took two weeks to take over the whole ***** country? You couldn't take over Baltimore in two weeks.''
-Chris Rock
And yet, even with hindsight's 20/20 nature, people never seem to see through the lies. So Iran will be made the next dangerous country, and will get invaded. Maybe thousands more American lives will have to be sacrificed in order to convince us that we've just GOT to go and get these dangerous *****.
I wonder how they will convince us, in years to come, that Venezuela is a threat. - ByteGuerilla, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Water being wet is acceptable.
Politicians lying is not. - Bobski, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3It's already been proven in scientific study that the best liars make the best leaders.
For proof: Google is your friend. - bshock, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Please stop this nonsense.
Once again we have an individual who seems to believe that "they're all the same" constitutes wisdom.
*****. A statement like this is merely one more way of deciding that you don't need to think or learn. "All politicians lie, therefore I no longer need to investigate politicians, listen to what they say, or think about the implications of what they've done or what they're doing." This is childish.
Yes, all politicians lie -- all human beings lie. But please don't be the naive sort who believes that the quality of truthfulness is binary. Some politicians lie more than others, just as some human beings lie more than others. Perhaps more importantly, some politicians lie about issues with more dire consequences than others.
Without a doubt President Clinton lied on countless occasions, just as President Bush has lied on countless occasions. But how many human beings died as a consequence of President Clinton's lies? Mr. Bush's body count now numbers in the millions.
You can deny it, but then you'd be lying to yourself. - RadiatedAnt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2And the bird goes tweet...
- inactive, on 10/20/2007, -0/+2This *can't* be true! That would mean that the war on drugs is really just a pretext to allow the CIA to actually deal drugs to support their black ops. That would mean the "no child left behind" will leave children behind. The "war on waste" declared by Rumsfeld on 9/10/2001 after "losing" 2.3 trillion would actually herald a new era of obscene spending! What about when Mark Foley (for example) comes out against pedophilia? What would that mean for the "war on terror"? THEY TOLD ME OSAMA DID IT!!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Bush must laugh to himself everytime he says "God" and you think of Christianity or the Bible. That's not what he has in mind but he knows you'll assume the thing most readily available to you. Bush is a devil-worshiper, whenever he says "god" that's who he's referring to. Why else all the war? How much more obvious could he make it without spelling it out?

- dupswapdrop, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1how can you tell a Politician is lying?
their lips are moving! - Fordi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Sorry, but politicians, being in control of others' situations, need to be held to a much, much higher standard of honesty than others.
- h4ppymac, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2PROVE IT!
- ByteGuerilla, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Indeed. I used to really enjoy political satire but I realised it makes the entire arena of politics a joke. Something not to take seriously. All of a sudden, it becomes clear why no one gives a ***** about fraudulent ballotting and the concept of popular authority holding its politicians (that's right, folks, they work for us, no matter how far the State puts itself above us) accountable.
Bill Clinton was crucified for a lie that didn't even pertain to his office. I'd like to think that, despite the impeachment not resulting in a conviction, that that mess happened so we could demonstrate what a lie means in office. But that would be wishful thinking.
In the age of the Hollywood conspiracy theory, the most successful liars tell the biggest lies, and they them the most often. - Fordi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Most of the population would - then claim to appreciate his honesty, and believe all further claims.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Some people don't *want* to get wet.
- ByteGuerilla, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1"The state is a product of society at a certain stage of development; the state is the recognition that this society has become entangled in an irresoluble contradiction within itself, that it is divided into irreconcilable antagonisms which it is powerless to escape. But in order that these antagonisms, classes with conflicting economic interests, might not devour each other and society in sterile struggle, a power seeming standing above society became necessary for the purpose of moderating the conflict, keeping it within the bounds of 'order'. And this power, which has arisen out of society but placed itself above it and increasingly alienated itself from it, is the state.''

The state is the enemy of every common man. It is only fitting that the common man make himself the state's enemy in return. - Observant1, on 10/20/2007, -0/+1politics: poli = poly = many , and ticks are blood sucking parasites.
you know why they bury politicians face up? because no one wants to listen to those *****.
these people arent supposed to be politicians, they are supposed to be representatives of the people, and are not doing their job at all. elections are run more like an "adventures of bill and ted" high school senior class presentation contest out front, while behind the scenes the real bastards are busy re-districting election zones and rigging electronic voting machines, with fictional estimated results posted within minutes of the ballot process closing as if conclusive. they'll say or do anything to gain or retain office, and once into the washington DC city/state they are only accountable to their own laws and constitution, which is separate and different from the law of the land. the only recent exceptions I've seen, Cynthia McKinney who was tossed out for being a real American, and Ron Paul ... who I'm still not thoroughly convinced in being "THE MAN" to help put it straight.. much of what he says and has done is great, but what he hasnt said and done is personally disturbing. make no move against Rick Perry's land grabs for the NAFTA superhighway and toll roads that the people dont want and Giuliani's lawfirm making million representing CINTRA from Spain who builds the stuff in Ron's home state, or how walmart building the superport in Texas neighbor Mexico for the Chinese super-cargo ships to import MORE slave made goods that bankrupt US manufacturers and unemploy millions -and that hillary was board of directors to walmart 6 years, CFR, Bilderberg, etc.. her hubby billyboy gave technology to China and in a baton pass to bush, rammed NAFTA through.
if Ron Paul spoke out about some of the things really going on, 2 of his major opponents would be exposed as the traitors they are, knocking them right out of the competition. he wont tell it 9-11 was an inside job to drag us into a pre-planned illegal war and facilitate/accelerate the growth of a fascist state (theres plenty of evidence). he hasnt spelled it out about cheney/halliburton/KBR/blackwater, rumsfeld/dyncorp... no mention of 800+ FEMA concentration camps on American soil with a 385 million a year no-bid contract (cheney/kbr) for 5-6 years building them.. he was the rep from texas where privatization of prisons began, and where GWB as governor loved watching executions of death row inmates ... so how can I fully trust him? I dont. meantime he's probably the lesser of evil cantidates running and has my vote.
excuse my long winded style here about politicians, lies, half-truths, omissions, inactions..
I only hope to stir some real critical thinking and that some real questions get asked. - chrisinsocalif, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0If a politician told you he was a compulsive liar, would you believe him?
- RollFizzlebeef, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1This displays such a massive amount of ignorance of politics, I don't know where to begin;
but mostly it has to do with representing a massive number of constituents and trying to keep them all happy and voting for him/her.
No one's defending outright lying, but politicians don't suck - people do. - duke1776, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1You want to know why this won't change? Most Americans don't ***** read!
- Raisuli, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Damn, and I thought the thing under my bed was just a huge dust mite.
- genezorz, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Politicians have to lie because they have to please everyone. They have to have the support of some and pacify the rest. Since there will always be division between people...someone is being lied to. May not be applicable in every situation, but especially in local politics.
- Poovey, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3Speaking of liars.
- F1R3DUP, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Silly God heads...if it's bad it must be Satan's fault. If it's good, it's God's doing. Hey that explains everything! Yay, i feel better!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Oh stop! Politicians lie as much (or less than diggers) anyone else. They are people.
I am not excusing them but the facts are that everyone considers it a lie when they don't meet their pledge to the voting public.
Yes, I read the article. It comes across as skewed. We all know politicians lie. Big surprise!
But let's consider, seriously. Everyone (yes you do) has a skeleton in the closet (keep denying it but you do). Does it make us bad at our job? No. Does it make you untrue to your ,mission? Depends. Sometimes you have to sell out to get your way ultimately (hopefully Metallica is doing things this way - unlikely). - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2Riiiiiiggghhhtttt......
