- badqat, on 01/25/2009, -5/+45You know, it might have, like, you know, had something, you know, to do with the fact that, you know, she was summarily, like, unqualified, you know, for the job.
- michaelpinto, on 01/25/2009, -0/+20It's fashionable to say this because of Bush leaving the White House, but the fact is that in any line of business having parents that did the same thing will always give you a leg up on others. Here in NY Governor Paterson is the son of a very well known Harlem politician, his competition is Andrew Cuomo son of a previous Governor. In fact call it a hunch but my bet is that we're going to see more of Chelsea Clinton in a few years on the national level.
- richmomz, on 01/25/2009, -5/+23The fact that she wasn't chosen makes me feel that there is still hope for this country.
- TheEngineer2008, on 01/25/2009, -0/+9I don't think he said anything about the concept of political dynasties going away. Rather, he wrote about how some of the current ones are in decline.
- mfc5200, on 01/26/2009, -1/+10Article 1 Section 9:
No title of nobility shall be granted by the United States: and no person holding any office of profit or trust under them, shall, without the consent of the Congress, accept of any present, emolument, office, or title, of any kind whatever, from any king, prince, or foreign state. - ajonsey, on 01/26/2009, -1/+9Tell that to Canadians who expect Justin Trudeau to be Prime Minister in less than 20 years
- loafnut, on 01/26/2009, -0/+6Weak article. Poorly supported and written. Looks like he was on a deadline and threw it together. Interesting subject but this article is lacking.
- shupy, on 01/26/2009, -4/+10Well, political dynastys are a little too much like monarchy for my taste.
Monarchies don't do well over time. They start with a strong leader, and then they get passed on to their coddled and spoiled offspring who are rarely as strong and who lack the leadership.
If we have ever seen the disaster of a political dynasty it is the Bush family.
Bush was a typical product. Never had to work for anything, and had the arrogance to think he was entitled to the presidency. - toshimonkey, on 01/26/2009, -2/+7No, it proved the existence of at least 55 million retards in America.
- Asromeburns, on 01/26/2009, -0/+5Anyone that thinks political dynasties mean anything in the least bit is naive.
Think of political families as brand names but the same group is in a backroom trying to market them as well as possible to the American people. - AROZ, on 01/26/2009, -0/+4That could be interesting.
- stroudma, on 01/26/2009, -3/+7yea, this is a little naive for my taste. Hillary nearly made it into office on last name alone. GW did. Suddenly, because someone cant get a seat in the legislator, it is on the decline?
meh, i'll hope he's right but i wont hold my breath - Elranzer, on 01/26/2009, -0/+3Rothschilds are still here, too.
- homah, on 01/26/2009, -1/+4i'm going to email this guy and tell him his article sucks when jeb bush or hillary clinton becomes president in 4 or 8 years.
- BullBearMS, on 01/26/2009, -0/+3According to Glenn Greenwald at Salon, political dynasties are NOT shrinking. His research shows that before Senator Clinton resigned a full 25% of current Senators were from political families. On the House side then number is 15%.
Just because Caroline ran into trouble while being vetted does not mean that this is not still a very alarming problem. We will NEVER get change if we keep electing the same old people to rule us.
Here is a link to a transcript of the Salon radio interview if you are interested.
http://www.salon.com/opinion/greenwald/radio/2009/ ... - inactive, on 01/26/2009, -0/+3Wake up. Hillary will not run in 4yrs. Jeb Bush, needs to wait a little longer because Bush's scars will still be there unless Obama ***** up big time.
Obama 08 - 12
Michell Obama 2016. Lol! - brandita, on 01/26/2009, -1/+4Good riddance. Time for some fresh blood and new ideas.
- winstonc, on 01/26/2009, -0/+3It's Broder, not Brooks.
- KibblesnBitts, on 01/26/2009, -0/+2The Udall family
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Udall
still strong after all these years. They may be in decline, but they're still there. - IKORKYI, on 01/26/2009, -0/+2but she was a kennedy!!!! dont you people get it!!!
- mcquitty, on 01/26/2009, -0/+2Or how about the president whose policies created the Great Depression... FDR?
- Elranzer, on 01/26/2009, -0/+2"In fact call it a hunch but my bet is that we're going to see more of Chelsea Clinton in a few years on the national level. "
It would be fine if she actually studied law and political science and got some real job experience in there. Many children follow in their patrents' footsteps.
The problem comes from when said child has NO job experience or studies and just wants in because her parents were.
It would be like the son of a heart surgeon wanting to practice as a heart surgeon even though he went to art school instead of med school. - inactive, on 01/26/2009, -0/+2You know, I do know what you mean, you know, I understand about the whole qualification thing, you know, and the whole thing, you know.
- bixel, on 01/26/2009, -0/+1Maybe the Political Dynasties we all know from the Media and the Tabliods are fading away. But what about all those in the Bilderberg Group or the Trilateral Committee, what about all those ultra richies with their grubby hands molding politics from the shadows?? Eh?
- HappyScrappy, on 01/26/2009, -0/+1I hope this is true. I'm not sure I'm really convinced though.
- inactive, on 01/26/2009, -0/+1Gov. Patterson was an idiot to even have considered her. This is the same moron who claimed "community organizer" was a Republican racist code word for black people.
- mcquitty, on 01/26/2009, -0/+1I know you want it to happen. I understand. However, history is not on your side yet.
During the 20th century, only three Democrat presidents were elected to consecutive terms.
Wilson
Roosevelt (4 terms)
Clinton
Two did serve for two terms, but were elected for one. Truman and Johnson.
Why don't we wait a year or two before we consider President Obama's term a success? - tazmeister, on 01/26/2009, -0/+1tempted to digg this but I think its wrong, also this is the sort of thing political dynasties want people to hear right now.
Like the bush family or the kennedy's are really falling apart.
This is something one can only determine the long run. - Elranzer, on 01/26/2009, -0/+1It proved there are more idiots than intellectuals in the country. Which is always the case in every situation... only a few winners, a WHOLE lot of a losers.
- BullBearMS, on 01/26/2009, -0/+1In the 50's they found a peak of 15 Senators from political families compared to 24 currently. Read the article!
- bassmule, on 01/26/2009, -0/+1I'm afraid Broder is a bit early, here. Nepotism is still alive and well in US government. There are at least 15 members of the Senate who are related to people who have held high government office. There are so many in the House it's hard to get a good count.
- pennvneff, on 01/26/2009, -1/+1You're 8 years too late with that piece of wisdom. I'd take a Kennedy over some jackass from the Bush family in a heart beat.
- inactive, on 01/26/2009, -1/+1This is good to hear
People should be elected because of who they are and what they have done and what they can do.
They should not be elected because of who they are related to - mythicflux, on 01/26/2009, -1/+1Why do you think Hillary had Chelsea on the campaign trail engaging press front and center?
It's because the Clinton's plan is to move Chelsea into office at some point. That was Hillary's reason for expecting to win, because she was running on the idea of her husband being President. She was trying to build a Clinton dynasty. - RoyFocker, on 01/26/2009, -0/+0History has shown that dynasties have a tendency to fail over time. Usually, one powerful member of the family establishes himself as a political powerhouse, then it is human nature to assume that the family itself is leadership material. However, the reality is that later dynasty members are usually weaker leaders. There are few genetic dispositions for a good leader- good leaders are made, not born.
If you REALLY want to get wild with families of leaders, may I remind you that the Chicago Sun-Times reported Obama as being related to Bush and Cheney. Article at: http://www.suntimes.com/news/politics/obama/family ...
Guess you better gear up that suicide bomb, eh Fubarepublic? - aletoledo, on 01/26/2009, -1/+1The rich elite have seen how popular Obama has been, so they're throwing out their old puppets and getting new ones.
- ApleFanboi, on 01/26/2009, -1/+0lol Caroline kenedy sucked my d once!
Fail! - BenTheTank, on 01/26/2009, -3/+2Caroline Kennedy had less business running for Senate than Palin had running for VP. And that's saying a lot.
Also, David Broder is a terrible columnist. - Elranzer, on 01/26/2009, -2/+1Stats are fun...
During the 20th Century:
Two Republicans are contested for worst president of all time
George W Bush
Herbert Hoover
Only one president ever resigned
Richard Nixon (Republican)
Only one president won the electoral but lost the popular
George W Bush (Republican)
Only one president was previously a B-list actor
Ronald Reagan (Republican)
Only one president required the Supreme Court to decide against the will of the people
George W Bush (Republican) - inactive, on 01/26/2009, -4/+255 million votes proved bush right
- MoisturePoints, on 01/26/2009, -4/+1Maybe because most of these families are largely incompetent. Good riddance.
- TrAzE28, on 01/26/2009, -7/+3You stole the comment from the tip of my fingers.. .
The New School has just begun! - thepoliticalcat, on 01/26/2009, -6/+1David Brooks, who spent the entire past 8 years lauding that witless son of wamba, gee dumbya, daily predicting "comebacks" for his beleagured shoe-target, is now opining on the future of others in the tradition of political dynasties? Pleez. Gillibrand herself comes from a powerful political family, and Kennedy and Cuomo were her two rivals. Brooks really ought to retire. He is beyond doddering.
- mcnees287, on 01/26/2009, -9/+2no you have it wrong. its because she is a woman
- WhiteHatTrick, on 01/26/2009, -13/+3Tell that to Hillary Clinton and the puppet masters of Obama
