- foxxhunt, on 10/11/2007, -7/+269The upside down flag does not mean defeat--it indicates distress.
- jtb4, on 10/11/2007, -23/+242Not really. If you join the military I think you have the right to voice your opinion. Plus, what's wrong with feeling that it is wrong to kill innocent people?
- Chogram, on 10/11/2007, -17/+212The problem with this country isn't the president.
Its the fact that we haven't had more than 30% voter turnout in the last 3-4 presidential elections.
People want the country run "their" way, but they are too lazy to get off of their fat asses and go do something about it. - tidu, on 10/11/2007, -4/+160"There is no flag large enough to cover the shame of killing innocent people."
- Howard Zinn
And sailors used to invert their flag like so to signal to other boats that they're in danger. - ssjdoob, on 10/11/2007, -30/+159I like how the flag is upside down symbolizing that America is in distress.
- Chubakkaz, on 10/11/2007, -49/+157I'm going on a burying spree just becuase of all the pro war uneducated ***** that are swarming digg, GTFO please... ***** bush. genocidal bastard he is. you can't ***** justify "oh americans died on 9/11" oh yeah, and I'm sorry for the family's loss, but it isnt even remotely ***** human to strike a country that wasnt ***** related to this (it's been proven, if you disagree you're an ignorant *****) and kill over 100,000 regular, average, innocent ***** people, just like you and me. ***** this nonsense, I agree with this picture.
yes I'm pissed lol. - scoobydoo84, on 10/11/2007, -16/+123@blueforce4116
Tool?? You call a soldier offended by the killings of innocents a tool?? Why you *****, no good, warmongering, worthless to democracy, traitor, America hating, tool of a brainwashed, koolaid drinking, looney, chickenhawk cowards!! How do you like that you piece of *****. How dare you call a soldier a tool for being offended by the death of innocent humans?? - crashbang, on 10/11/2007, -38/+119Can you explain what is pop culture about this? I dont understand what you're trying to say...
- recover82, on 10/25/2007, -31/+109That is the stupidest thing I have ever read. You're an asshat.
- rebelfan91, on 10/11/2007, -45/+110i agree, bush needs to take a long hard look at this and think about all the pain and suffering he's caused
- nblsavage, on 10/11/2007, -6/+71and they had what to do with Iraq? You ***** tool
- Albionshores, on 10/11/2007, -18/+73I really feel that soldier. Soldiers often carry their own victory flag in their personal kit, at least one or two in every platoon in anticipation for that Iwo Jima moment. This guy has obviously been and seen but nothing he saw was deserving the flag he held in such high regard.
To bring it home inverted means he saw nothing in this war befitting America. Listen to him and bring the troops home. - BuddyleeR, on 10/11/2007, -6/+57Because usually joining the military means fighting for your country in a just cause. This isn't what he signed up for.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -18/+65Dude, Bush is a sociopath. He is incapable of relating to that, he's incapable of empathising with anyone but himself.
- popltree2, on 10/11/2007, -8/+52But are you free to not fight a war you don't agree with? And WTF does God have to do with anything? By your logic, one should kill his allies along with the enemy and "let God sort them out." Your ignorance makes me frustrated and angry.
- SilkSteel, on 10/11/2007, -4/+43Terrorists don't have a flag.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -13/+51Wow. Most respectable soldier ever. This guy has grapes; he didn't even try to hide his face. Of course, he's 100x more likely to be in a "friendly fire" incident now.
- Antitheft, on 10/11/2007, -4/+42I don't know why he joined the military, but I doubt that he did it so he could kill innocents. Ass.
- SilkSteel, on 10/11/2007, -52/+88Truer words have never been spoken. This war is lost, this world is lost, Bush's administration has royally ***** our beautiful country for generations to come.
- thekms, on 10/11/2007, -3/+35so what you're saying is... that 9/11 gives us a reason to be as inhumane as them? great logic, really.
- Phearce, on 10/11/2007, -4/+35I'd imagine that in making such a potent image the young man was aware of the following excerpt of the flag code. In short, he's demonstrating that there is an emergency that needs immediate attention.
"The Flag Code, which formalizes and unifies the traditional ways in which we give respect to the flag, also contains specific instructions on how the flag is not to be used. They are:
* The flag should never be dipped to any person or thing. It is flown upside down only as a distress signal "
http://www.usflag.org/flagetiquette.html - jessicass, on 10/11/2007, -5/+36What about the families of the hundreds of thousands of people who have died due to us bombing them over the decades? Or is it only important when its an American life?
- OUberLord, on 10/11/2007, -2/+33No, I'm sure it hasn't, but actually he's talking more along the lines of how incredibly soiled America's worldwide reputation and of how our international efforts have done nothing more than contradict the very aim of world stabilization that was it's purported intent.
- Albionshores, on 10/11/2007, -2/+32Hesitate to pull the trigger?!!??
For every insurgent killed they are firing 250,000 rounds!!! The only hesitation is from Repretitive Strain Injury. - zomgwaffles, on 10/11/2007, -0/+30Actually, "The U.S. flag is flown upside down only as a sign of distress."
http://www.starsandstripesmuseumlibrary.org/Flag.html - RobynG7, on 10/11/2007, -7/+37Have you been paying attention to the war in Iraq? It looks an awful lot like an emergency to me.
- Sonizel, on 10/11/2007, -3/+32you don't know where he got the flag from
- ninsei, on 10/11/2007, -6/+34That's one of the more ignorant comments I've read today ...
- SupaFurry, on 01/23/2008, -2/+30So let me get this straight, some innocent Americans were brutally killed on 9/11 and that somehow gives Americans permission to brutally kill other innocent people? Are you seriously that retarded? Is this what constitutes "revenge" for you? And to think, people with this sort of mental ability are allowed to vote.
- AzDraon, on 10/11/2007, -7/+34There is a Reply option for a reason! Use it!
- inactive, on 12/26/2008, -8/+35@pwherman512
You're an idiot and a troll at the same time. Congratulations! - ncc74656m, on 10/11/2007, -6/+32Unfortunately, if you're in the military, you don't have the right to voice your opinion. This poor guy will probably be court-martialed with a dishonorable discharge, and maybe even serve time.
That being said, he's right.
To the neo-con diggers, do really need to reexamine why Bush has put a much larger and more permanent stain on our flag? Well, actually, come to think of it, we really DO need to review this.
- Our stature in the world as moral leaders has been diminished, almost beyond repair. We have established secret prisons like (and rumored to even be) Russian gulags, ignored the Geneva Conventions, withdrawn from the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty, ignored the mandates of the UN, and all this is just the international stuff.
- Bush has steadily eroded the essential freedoms that make our country what it is. For evidence, I submit to you the warrantless phone tapping programs, the Patriot Act, and the dilution of habeas corpus.
- Bush started a war with a country, albiet a malignant one, without any real evidence to support the claimed threat it posed to us, and then has gone to great lengths to continue to hide and destroy evidence that proves this.
- Bush FAILED to capture or kill Osama bin Laden, the man who DID attack us on September 11th, 2001. (I repeat the date because so often it is over/misused, and I feel it necessary to clarify the EXACT cause/effect, and take this fateful day back from those who would misuse it and return it back to the sacred trust with which Americans must hold it.)
- Bush and his administration have loaded the Justice Department with incompetent political appointees, some who have little or NO actual experience as prosecutors.
- Bush flaunts the will of Congress, the Senate, and the American people with so-called "signing statements," and then dodges any responsibility by claiming a dubious "executive privilege," to which there is no reference in the Constitution.
The list goes on. Can you tell me now why we should not be upset with Bush and his failed and flawed administration? Or would you just say "It's Clinton's fault!" again, and go back to cowering in the corner with the rest of the chickenhawks? - GuyCaballero, on 10/11/2007, -3/+28Hey, moron. Do you realize how many innocent women and children you literally set on fire and burned to death in Japan in WWII? Hundreds of thousands.
- Boshow, on 10/11/2007, -5/+30You forfeit your own opinions when you sign up for the military.
"Now your soul may belong to Jesus, but your ass belongs to the Marine Corp."
-Full Metal Jacket. - thirdman, on 10/11/2007, -8/+32Yeah, cos that worked so well in Vietnam...
- mickhead, on 10/11/2007, -3/+24Quick, he has an opinion, lets use violence to fix it!
- slantyeyed, on 10/11/2007, -8/+29i hope people understand the significance of an upside down flag.
- americanforest, on 10/11/2007, -2/+22It's just a piece of fabric. Freedom of speech and expression should be worth more to America then any piece of fabric.
- chrisc262, on 10/11/2007, -0/+20it doesn't count if you don't go to the polls
- BeefBaron, on 10/11/2007, -8/+27Man, you think ultra rich white politicians care about anyone but themselves?
- samwisezomg, on 10/11/2007, -10/+29Yea, I'm sure your life in suburbia has been flipped upside down. Lol
- OBCENEIKON, on 10/11/2007, -4/+23Welcome to freedom...
- SmokeyB, on 10/11/2007, -1/+20Why can't you write on the flag, but you can buy American flag underwear?
- AxeSwinger, on 10/11/2007, -1/+19Served my country and I believe this war is wrong I take this as one mans opinion. An opinion that is informed by his service and should be given more credibility than others. I would like the back story just to confirm this is a military member and I'm curious.
- freedomhater, on 10/11/2007, -2/+18how dare he write on the flag? like this? http://www.ushistory.org/betsy/flagbush.htm
- ohthedaysofyore, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17That "pussy pinko solider" has more balls then you ever will, putting his life on the line for dumb ***** like you.
- khail250, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15I was in the US Navy my friend, serving in the persian gulf...
- martalli, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15I think warty is drawing on Bush's very public seven year in public office. In that time, Bush has made a stamp on the world more significant than anything that will happen in his private life. I don't care if he is sweet to his wife, or calls his daughters to check in, or would help an old lady across the street. What has happened since his inauguration is what he will stand for, and it is what he will be remembered for.
- khail250, on 10/11/2007, -5/+20like bush disgraced america, the constitution, and the people.
- SupaFurry, on 01/23/2008, -4/+19The whole point is that he's in uniform doing it... That's the protest he's making. He's got balls, you have to admit.
