- michaelpinto, on 12/13/2008, -9/+112I love idea of promoting any sort of role model who is educated — school needs to be cool again!
- axelgrease, on 12/13/2008, -23/+91for once kids may adopt good role models, no more singers or sports hereos
- JavanSClark, on 12/14/2008, -21/+63It's so funny to watch you Republicans bitch and moan... more than a month after the election.
You.
Lost.
Get over it. - drivin98, on 12/14/2008, -5/+46Big deal!
I use Bush as an example to my kid all the time. "Johnny", I say, "Don't be torturing people or making up lame excuses to go to war."
So far, so good. - boomchockalocka, on 12/14/2008, -1/+27What's with all the negativity? Dude isn't even president yet and already you hate him? Way to be open minded.
- zbeast, on 12/14/2008, -3/+28Wow this thread is full of bitter.
We all had to deal with 8 years of bush if you thought those 8 years were good
well I really don't want to see what your little part of the world looks like.
As for Obama, he's not president yet. He could totaly screw this place up worse not because he's black
not because he did some blow, not because smokes or had smoked it's because he's just a politician;
then again when your face down in the gutter like the US currently is there's no place but up.
Also last time I checked smoking a cig is not a crime. it's bad for your health but its not a crime.
Did you really want a crazy old man and a crazy church lady in change of the USA? Really?
I think someone who is well educated from a good school was a better choice.
That really want your showing to your kids...
Not a black man as President but working hard and getting a good education will get you places. - ileftfark, on 12/14/2008, -13/+36I like Obama, but parents that make politicians role models are setting themselves up for disappointment.
- inactive, on 12/14/2008, -5/+28As much as I disagree with his policies, he's intelligent (president of the Harvard Law Review is nothing to be ashamed of, not to mention how he out-foxed Hillary Clinton at every turn), and he seems like a fairly honorable guy. At least he's honest and admits he's a statist, unlike Bush & co.
As far as role models go, you can do worse. - hangglide, on 12/14/2008, -0/+23Turn off the TV?
- RudeTurnip, on 12/14/2008, -1/+23I'm hoping he'll provide real encouragement to kids in inner cities. Now a kid living in the ghetto can see that the most powerful man in the world is a black man...and that kid can see that he didn't get there by acting like a gangster.
- publiclurker, on 12/14/2008, -5/+26You forgot to add that he's a BLACK Muslim who's BLACK minister hates non black flag pins.
But then, everyone on this blog knows you for who you are, so there is no reason to repeat yourself. - dingedarmor, on 12/14/2008, -8/+28Nah, Bush was the right role model--he proved any idiot can grow up to be president.
- inactive, on 12/14/2008, -2/+21So what if he tried it? He was young and curious.
I knew a guy who tried coke once. He hated the high it gave him, and he never tried it again. Someone who tries coke once and stays away from it after that is a good role model; it shows he can make up his own mind. - thatsgoodkarma, on 12/13/2008, -13/+32He's already made an example of himself.
- AmyVernon, on 12/13/2008, -13/+31Well, thing is, he's managed to become the first black man elected president of the United States, and that's an inspiring story.
- howsyamaschooks, on 12/14/2008, -4/+22A politician, a good role model. I'd like to see that!
- inactive, on 12/14/2008, -1/+19Oh My God. I just realized that we are in for four years of conspiracy theories, sniping, lying, sour grapes, pouting, and whining from the "right" (which isn't "right" about anything). There's nothing Obama can do that will please these *****.
Shame on me for my tendency to give people the benefit of the doubt. Unlike you neocon ***** are ever willing to do. You guys are hardwired for hatred, spite, greed, corruption, tunnel vision, and deceit. - AirRaven, on 12/14/2008, -5/+21The left had the delight of watching America's name being dragged through the mud under the leadership of one of the worst presidents in American history.
Obama's not even given the Right a *reason* to hate him as far as his actions in the office go yet. - cg4et, on 12/14/2008, -0/+14I am 32 years old, have no children, and I look up to our President-Elect as a role model for myself. He's hard working, disciplined, loyal to his spouse, and he stays focused and calm even in the face of great tumult and chaos.
If I can be anywhere near as respectable in my life as he is in his, then I will consider myself a success. - MindStalker, on 12/14/2008, -3/+17There hasn't been a US President who was brought up poor in a long long time. To be able to rise out of poverty, go to Harvard, and be elected Senator would be enough for your average role model. He then got elected President. Yep we need to see what he does with it, but he finally proved the "anybody can grow up to become president" was actually true.
- JenniferInMO, on 12/14/2008, -2/+15So much hate here. I hope our children aren't hearing this hate. Regardless of who Obama is or turns out to be our children don't need to be hearing that our President-Elect is what some of you people are saying.
I came to hate Bush. He lied, cheated, started an illegal unprovoked war. He has destroyed our economy. He is responsible for torture and human rights abuses beyond our wildest dreams, but I was careful not to scare children with these truths. Young children do not need to know that we live in an unstable world. They need to feel safe. As children get older they need their questions answered calmly and factually. They also don't need to hear angry rants or hatred coming from the people who they look to for security. - ScottMitchell, on 12/14/2008, -6/+19Graduating from Harvard Law, being a community worker, a US Senator, and elected President constitute "hasn't actually done anything yet?" For a little perspective on your thinking, Annihilia, perhaps you can list some of your accomplishments.
- iisabelle, on 12/13/2008, -21/+34How about we cool off and wait to see if he does a good job or not before we start using him as an example to children...?
- MacroDaemon, on 12/14/2008, -8/+21I still hear "bush stole the election" 8 years later.
- pintomp3, on 12/14/2008, -1/+13ooo, he tried a plant based substance. we need to get over our drug prohibition.
- Alheithinn, on 12/14/2008, -1/+12It's no surprise that you Right Wingers are as negative as you are...it's no change from the tone of the campaign. But at least we were open minded enough to wait and see what Bush would do before we crucified him. You're just hateful, narrow-minded, spiteful little people. And having already seen what you chose for president, we've duly taken your opinions into consideration and filed them away in the appropriate place.
- Annihilia, on 12/14/2008, -11/+22This is hysterical because, like him or not, he hasn't actually done anything yet.
And before you hit that red thumbs down, just think about it for a moment. America is getting worked up on the promises, not actions, of a politician. That's like being back in junior high when the popular kid runs for class president promising Pepsi water fountains. - aresef, on 12/14/2008, -9/+19You too can be the first black president!
- ScottMitchell, on 12/14/2008, -0/+10Nah, Bush showed that any idiot WITH FAMILY CONNECTIONS can grow up to be President. Obama, Clinton, Carter, Raegan, Nixon, and many showed that it is more about what you make of yourself than your family lineage.
- joand315, on 12/14/2008, -4/+14If Obama were to leave this earth tomorrow his story is still wonderfully inspiring to kids who come from less than ideal conditions. He already had quite a few accomplishments to which we would want kids to aspire before being elected.
The very fact that he wants school to be cool says a lot about him. - cadillacboogie, on 12/14/2008, -1/+11Wow, a president we can look up to and be proud of. Who would have thought?
- saisumimen, on 12/14/2008, -3/+13Do you have any idea what Bush has done? Hell, his great grandfather helped the goddamn NAZIS, for *****'s sake. It doesn't get much worse than that.
Bush did cocaine (possession of which is a FELONY in some states), went AWOL during a time of war (cowards can be executed during wartime), used to be an alcoholic, got busted for drinking and driving (in the goddamn 70's no less), started two illegal wars in direct violation of the United Nations, illegally set up torture "black site" prisons in eastern Europe, illegally wiretapped US citizens, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc... time will only tell what other atrocities he was responsible for. - inactive, on 12/14/2008, -7/+16He got elected, didn't he, and he ran a helluva campaign. Regardless of how his presidency turns out, it's more than you've probably accomplished.
- JenniferInMO, on 12/14/2008, -5/+14Bush used cocaine. Obama tried it.
- baldr, on 12/14/2008, -1/+10a role model doesn't have to live a perfect life. If that were the case, no one would ever have any role models. a role model just needs to make something of their life and do so with class.
- BossKey, on 12/14/2008, -0/+8Well snorting coke was apparently OK as long as GW Bush did it, and boy did he ever.
- ZeroCubed, on 12/14/2008, -1/+9...I went and checked the youtube videos you saw...and that is about as cracked up as the national enquirer stuff.
The people who posted these videos - a mccain supporter, who also posted a video about Obama saying Palin is a *****, campaigned in Kenya, and just about every other conspiracy cooked up. Also Palin supporters - and the "news" stations these stories are reported are sketchy (like Fox) - one is in SPANISH. Another video sounds like a radio recording with pictures fading in and out. Anyone can say any crap they want over the radio - especially in small town radios where most of the nuts live.
Oh, BTW, in the Spanish one, the lady the guy is talking to about Barrack Obama being gay, is a MUPPET.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_CkEyYCnHIo&fea ...
You're gonna take news seriously from a muppet? If a muppet tells me an asteroid is gonna hit earth I keep walking merrily. - DontGiveADamn, on 12/14/2008, -1/+9200 years ago Ben Franklin was held up as a role model for kids. It backfired. The kids could never be like Franklin because Franklin was a genius.
- AirRaven, on 12/14/2008, -0/+8*clicks heels, salutes*
Heil jakdracula!
(The principle's just as retarded whatever direction of the political spectrum you're chucking it from.) - JenniferInMO, on 12/14/2008, -0/+8I hope you people don't scare your kids with that kind of talk.
- StuartGibson, on 06/14/2009, -1/+9Bastard. I, too, have now lost the game.
- ZeroCubed, on 12/14/2008, -3/+11AirRaven is right - so far Obama has been doing nothing but setting a good example of what a President should be doing - and he's not even President yet!
- Sansui, on 12/14/2008, -0/+7My condolences.
- denizen42, on 12/14/2008, -5/+12You're confused. Bush is LEAVING office.
- inactive, on 12/14/2008, -4/+11Oh My God. I just realized that we are in for four years of conspiracy theories, sniping, lying, sour grapes, pouting, and whining from the "right" (which isn't "right" about anything). There's nothing Obama can do that will please these *****. It's time for them to "get even". The problem is that Obama will do a good job as opposed to the ***** up mess that Dumbyah created, and you are already looking like bitter fools who are finding any reason to dislike this man rather than admit you're racist *****.
Shame on me for my tendency to give you people the benefit of the doubt. Something you neocon ***** are never willing to do. You guys are hardwired for hatred, spite, greed, corruption, tunnel vision, and deceit.
Time for me to start blocking users 'cuz I'm chasing a dream that will never come true--that there might actually be some unity and agreement in this nation. Reagan started a pissing match that will never go away. - BossKey, on 12/14/2008, -1/+8Just like the right kept complaining that everything was the fault of the Clinton administration, even deep into Bush's second term?
- ironhide, on 12/14/2008, -0/+7*citation needed*
- inactive, on 12/14/2008, -2/+8Whatever happened to being the better man? These days it seems like everything is governed by "Well so-and-so did it first!"
- priegog, on 12/14/2008, -0/+6It says a lot about what politics (in general, but particularly in america) do to people's minds when comments like these are made. Playground rules don't apply (or shouldn't) to adult life.
The day politicians, parties and people in general start thinking about what's best for the country instead of trying to ridicule the other party, it'll be a good day for the united states. - fiatjustitia, on 12/14/2008, -1/+7"I find it liberating to play offense instead of defense!"
This really is a game to you, isn't it? -
