- McQatak, on 09/07/2008, -22/+245This is a brilliant assessment of the John McCain who is running for president in 2008. I think most of the affinity for the Republican nominee is purely based on what folks remember of him in 2000 coupled with the sadness they felt after he was totally trashed by his best bud, W. The fact is that John McCain '08 is someone we don't know and can't trust. The metamorphosis is still a work in progress because he doesn't seem to know what the mission of his campaign is. It appears to be the kitchen sink strategy in reverse, throw everything you can find IN the mix ... the pudding will become cake.
““Often my haste is a mistake,” McCain conceded in his 2002 memoir, “but I live with the consequences without complaint.” Well, maybe it’s fine if he wants to live with the consequences, but what about his country?”” This is not "country first." This is John McCain's ambition first, last, always.
This election is not about the best personality, the best "American story," the best presentation, or the worst "green screen" moment. This election is about America, her people, her prosperity, and her pride. America is hurting economically, militarily, and politically. Loss of jobs, houses, and quality/affordable health care; loss of life and limb; loss of power and standing among foreign nations/leaders is destroying the best of America and future generations to come.
This election is bigger than bumper sticker slogans, 30-second sound bites for the 24 hour news cycle, name calling, and gamesmanship. The speeches of the RNC in St. Paul were a string of insults, call outs, LIES and distortions. None of this will solve our energy crisis, mortgage crisis, credit crisis, or health care crisis. None of this will restore the lives lost on 9/11 or the more than 4000 so far in defense of this tragic attack, lower the price of gas and food, stop mortgage foreclosures, or create jobs and livable wages for all Americans.
"Party" at all cost is a debt we cannot ever repay. Win at all cost is fight we cannot ever recover from. This is a dangerous presidential campaign strategy. John McCain is a dangerous man. Reckless decision-making, zealous party conformity, and personal ambition is D A N G E R O U S! - LooseFur, on 09/07/2008, -12/+127Rich's editorial nails it - the Palin nomination is classic GOP "rope-a-dope" strategy to get the press from talking about HIM and his total lack of ideas about 1) the economy; 2) the housing crisis; 3) rampant corruption/lobbyists running amok in D.C.; 4) foreign affairs.
Honesty, we DON'T KNOW John McCain much at all, but what we DO know should frighten us ALL. - edgefield, on 09/07/2008, -18/+113This is the best editorial I've seen regarding Palin/McCain. Please Digg and shout to spread this around!
- booksnmore4you, on 09/07/2008, -10/+83So he found a hot chick, abandoned good sense and principle, and quick hopped in the sack and got married because he thought it would advance his career. Just like he did with Cindy.
- liberD, on 09/07/2008, -12/+84This article by Frank Rich makes the point...the main point...the most pertinent and potentially tragic point...
"Often my haste is a mistake,” McCain conceded in his 2002 memoir, “but I live with the consequences without complaint.” Well, maybe it’s fine if he wants to live with the consequences, but what about his country? Should the unexamined Palin prove unfit to serve at the pinnacle of American power, it will be too late for the rest of us to complain."
This election remains a rubics cube to only the walking wounded easily fooled and those desparate to inflict their moral piousness upon the masses...to all others, this should be obvious and urgent. Vote Obama/Biden and give us a future to dream about...simple.
— liberD, Pennsylvania - inactive, on 09/07/2008, -12/+72I used to work for a conservative organization in Washington, DC, and I can't even bring myself to vote for McCain. His choice of Sarah Palin makes me even more likely to vote for Obama.
Obama: Highly educated
McCain/Palin: Bottom of his class at the Naval Academy / floated around different colleges, finally graduates from low-ranked school with a journalism degree
Obama: Taught constitutional law at top university, community organizer, state senate, US Senate
McCain/Palin: he's done nothing but be in congress his whole life / former small-town beauty queen who was the mayor of *****, Alaska, then governor of state with less people than the cities many of us live in
Obama: Married a classy woman, and has stayed with her
McCain/Palin: screws over his former wife, hooks up with a woman who can afford to finance his political ambitions / likely cheated on her husband with his former business partner
I can keep going on, but I think the choice is clear. - BobScratchit, on 09/07/2008, -7/+57I consider myself a rather conservative person but I can't think of any real reason to vote Mccain over Obama. I honestly think Obama is the right choice and is the person we need right now in the White House.
- dafragsta, on 09/07/2008, -3/+40Does this really matter? Fundies and bigots look for the scarce silvery lining that makes their case, no matter how petty or vague it is. I honestly am not a big fan of Obama, but I loathe what the Republican party has stood for my entire life. The RNC was just a reflection of ignorance and stubborn belief in a system that has done NOTHING for them and campaigns on non-relevant issues of the day such as abortion and gay marriage. I remember in 2006 how everyone said "Oh, they'll never fall for this again."
Introduce a black guy as the presidential candidate and all the secret bigotry comes out in the voting booth. - SpinningHead, on 09/07/2008, -4/+41I think the RNC made their incredible lack of logic pretty well. Only a few months ago McCain said we are addicted to oil. Last week we saw a hall full of republicans chanting "drill, baby, drill".
- kingUssop, on 09/07/2008, -5/+40This is pretty much the mother of smackdowns. I think what we need to accept though is half the country wouldn't care if the VP was a golden retriever. They're party line people. The vote is going to be very important once again. Vote this year!

- oldgal, on 09/07/2008, -1/+34I have done a lot of research on the management styles of the two candidates. Before retirement I managed technical teams responsible for trouble-shooting critical online financial systems - I consider this crisis management- project management and problem management in compressed time. When I first started researching McCain's management style, I identified with him as a crisis management type. At that point I had a problem because good crisis managers tend to be instant gratification types. Although I can do a good job of managing a development project, over the long haul I get bored and lose effectiveness. One of the keys to good management is putting the right people in the right places. It became apparent to me that McCain has a problem doing this in that he turned over his staff twice - once when his primary campaign was in serious financial trouble and then when he switched to the Rove-acolyte team. A good crisis manager needs to understand process inside out in order to cut the quickest path to resolution. The process used by John McCain to select Palin as VP nominee show a total lack of process. Also required of crisis management is the ability rapidly consider and evaluate new methods and ideas - you are generally confronting stuff you haven't seen before, because you have fixed the stuff you have seen. I have seen no new campaign strategies or ideas incorporated in McCain's campaign. I no longer believe he is a crisis style manager, I know see him as a loose-canon style manager. I have also researched Obama's management style and find it solid (note: it is much easier to research than McCains, just google . One the things I like best about Obama's style which is rare to find is that he empowers people - his staff, his advisors, and his grass roots supporters.
- watchdoggie, on 09/07/2008, -4/+36Ever since her nomination I've been saying the same thing -- it's weird enough when people get married after 1 meeting but it sounds like even arranged marriages have more of a vetting process than Palin's nomination did. No background check???
BAD decision making. - inactive, on 09/07/2008, -7/+38Former small-town beauty queen becomes mayor of a tiny town, marries a snowmobile racer, and becomes governor of a state with less people than Fort Worth, TX.
Yep. She'll fit right in with the conservative base. - ScienceDoc, on 09/07/2008, -12/+42They have no shame. They will do anything to stay in power. The Republiclowns are a national disgrace.
- AntiMud2008, on 09/07/2008, -4/+31My Two Cents
The Palin Pick is Sexist
Sarah Palin has not been vetted, she has not been scrutinized, and the media is acting in a shamefully woeful way by not addressing this issue. I am deeply concerned about the McCain pick and horrified by the media’s softball coverage. Sarah Palin – has been selected by the GOP political puppeteers and masterminds for reasons other then her resume. Keep in mind these are the same people who brought us George Bush and the last 8 years of failed policy, lies, and corruption – have brought us Sarah Palin.
Palin came out of “right” field onto the political scene as an act of GOP desperation. The GOP is banking on the time tested theory that people will vote against their own self interest if someone appeals to them emotionally. The Palin pick is sexist – The McCain team passed over many qualified Republican women for Palin and the only reason that I can come up with, as Bill Maher so aptly (although crassly) put it, is she is an older attractive hockey Mom.
The Sarah Palin vice presidential pick hits at the heart of sexism – an attractive woman is chosen for a job, while highly qualified women (who may not be as physically appealing) are passed over. Every woman in America should be incensed at the GOP. Women should be incensed because of the reckless decision-making process and lack of vetting. Women should be incensed about Sarah Palin’s thin resume. Women should be incensed that the media is not addressing this issue at all.
Sarah Palin will not crack the glass ceiling should she become the vice-president. She will reinforce the idea that it is okay choose women for positions based on their physical appearances rather then their resume.
The media is being complicit with the GOP in duping the American public by avoiding the issue of sexism all together. It is still unclear to me as to why this is taking place but I have my suspicions. The lack of reporting has more to do with ratings and readership then the fear of appearing sexist.
The reality of 2008 presidential race is that Obama is only one swing state away from the nomination if he continues to hold onto the democratic strong and leaning states. The media has avoided reporting on this altogether. Throw in a wild card from the GOP like Sarah Palin, who isn’t the most qualified woman by a long shot, begin to report heavily on McCain’s poor judgment, point out that the GOP made their selection based on sexism itself, and the media can say goodbye to the media’s presidential coverage ratings and increased readership.
What the media has chosen to do is rave about Palin’s conservative appeal, brush off her lack of experience, ignore her lies and inconsistencies, and for the most part ignore the decision making process of selecting her for the job of vice president.
The media is in bed with the GOP helping them sell the pitbull with lipstick. Selling Sarah is comparable to Disney selling boy bands. The media, who have the principal responsibility of informing the public, is being played like a fiddle by the GOP. They are counting on the media to tiptoe around Sarah Palin, much the same way the media tiptoed around the Iraq war. They are counting on the media protecting their own self-interests rather then the interest of the people.
The most frightening aspect of selling Sarah is that she could be president one day. The media might want to keep this in mind while they are making decisions about what they choose to cover for the next 57 days. Newsflash – pundits, reporters, and esteemed journalists, if you remain complicit in this GOP sales pitch, Sarah isn’t just going to be one heartbeat away from the presidency for my children, she will be responsible for yours too.
- TigerStar337, on 09/07/2008, -2/+29I hope the people in the USA don't elect another stupid President.

"There's nothing redeeming about John McCain...he's a hypocrite." - Former House GOP Whip Tom DeLay - inactive, on 09/07/2008, -2/+28It's a dumb move to keep Palin hidden from the press. When she finally does open the floor for some of these guys to ask her random questions, she is going to get nailed. Instead of lobbing a single question about an individual criticism/scandal/flip-flop/etc. and moving on to something else after she gave a non-answer, they're going to persist ad nauseum until the questions themselves become headline news (e.g. Palin Tough Facing Questions Over _______). When this starts to happen, the stories will snowball to the point that she'll have to put out some kind of mini-white flap in the form of an admission or apology for something, which will make her look weak. They won't relent until they get this.
- richirwin, on 09/07/2008, -4/+28LET SARAH SPEAK!
- TimDigg, on 09/07/2008, -5/+25Could you imagine if something were to happen to John McCain in office. We would actually have a president WORSE THAN BUSH?
Think about it folks, Palin would make Bush look like FDR. - USArugula, on 09/07/2008, -3/+23"I didn't decide to run for president to start a national crusade for the political reforms I believed in or to run a campaign as if it were some grand act of patriotism. In truth, I wanted to be president because it had become my ambition to be president. . . . In truth, I'd had the ambition for a long time." – John McCain, "Worth the Fighting For”, 2002
In other words, stuff a sock in it, rightard. - archiesteel, on 09/07/2008, -2/+22Palindrones like to ignore the facts and respond with junior high school logic: "you're just made because she's more popular, nyah, nyah, nyah."
Yeah, there's a new face: she's mean, vindictive, very partisan, dishonest, and holds extremist views - not quite what it takes to convince the independents... - WriterinSac, on 09/07/2008, -3/+22Thoughtful and factual without the screaming we all seem to be engaged in lately. For everyone who loves to chant USA, please think about the 84,000 people who lost their jobs last month. What specifically has McCain/Palin said they would do to make sure those people do not lose their homes or go hungry. These are Americans, we are Americans, and we must all now act like grownups to pick the team who can lead us out of the deep hole of despair we now find ourselves in.
- inactive, on 09/07/2008, -4/+23She is an empty pant suit. If she were legit, she could go on the talk shows like every other candidate has this past year. Instead, she hides away memorizing talking points. She is pathetic.
lol if they think a couple of weeks of prepping this dumb bitch is going to save her ass when she gets bombarded by questions from clever journalists who have been training for years on how to trap politicians with well-crafted questions. - electrolemon, on 09/07/2008, -2/+21Palin: When I say shotgun, you say wedding, Shotgun
McCain: Wedding!
Palin: Shotgun!
McCain: Wedd- hey, where the ***** am I? - greensign, on 09/07/2008, -6/+25"McCain ’s *speed-dating* of Sarah Palin..."
"speed-dating" is funny but kinda true.
and this is for sure:
"impetuous and, in its Bush-like preference for gut instinct over facts, potentially reckless." - USArugula, on 09/07/2008, -3/+21flip2trip: You people sure do whine about "whiners" a lot.
- VitriolAndAngst, on 09/07/2008, -2/+20McCain isn't so bad -- except he rejected all his principles to bander to the Right-wing Extremists. Palin, seems like a great story at first. But then you find she is a dominionist. These end of the world folks are not great "planners for the future." She may have gotten the job, more for her ability to rip off the taxpayer than for her looks. Seems like that is the major Quality that the Repug party can find in a future leader.
- NelsonR, on 09/07/2008, -4/+21It's all so amusing, Now the mantra for Republicans is, "CHANGE". Unbelieveable with many illiterate Americans being conned into believing this Novel Idea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Next a Republican will say they have a free pass to Heaven.
- practical22, on 09/07/2008, -3/+19McCain's decision making is similar to his memory for facts - he has no memory and no management skills. An imbecile cloaked by his oversold captivity making him a hero totally unqualified to be President unless G W Bush is the new standard. If that is the case and marketing images vs. real skills is again the order of the day - then God help our doomed country.
- insertcleverid, on 09/07/2008, -1/+17Please keep commenting so that other conservatives can begin to understand why it is you're supporting Obama.
Thanks - Obama 08! - wing05, on 09/07/2008, -0/+15I think I gotta hand it to the republicans for totally deflecting the people's and media's attention away from the issues that matter.
Throw a pretty and young-ish female nobody from the arm-pit of Alaska into the race and watch her razzle dazzle the general public. Add on the right marketing campaign that'll protect her yet allow her to criticize her opponents on the same personal level that she is protecting and you've got the popularity contest that typifies a high school student council.

The whole idea of change, setting a time table to withdraw from Iraq, a focus on the economy, etc. They are trying to take those arguments out of the equation and then hope that McCains age/experience will get people to vote for him. They seem to have no ideas of their own that are palatable to the american people.

Obama had nuns whacked in Central America? - charlietuna, on 09/07/2008, -1/+14It's like the right and the left are taliking two different languages. Strike that - they ARE speaking two different languages. Palin was chosen to mobilize the "base" that we hear of so often - the group that Nixon referred to as the "silent majority". These are people who could care less about qualifications or foreign policy. They don't trust McCain, and without her they are unlikely to show up to vote at all. All they want is someone who they know espouses the causes they hold dear: no gay marriage, no abortions, gun rights for all, isolationist policies except for Moslem (heathen terrorist) countries, no welfare state (except pork - everyone loves pork), capital punishment and swift just for anyone who looks creepy to them. Note the omission of any real foreign policy. For a foreign policy plank you only need ask John Bolton, and I think that his views speak for themselves.
The left keeps trying to shoot down GOP darlings based on silly criteria such as intelligence and a broader world view. All the right hears when that comes up is "blah blah *elitist* blah". Say what you will, but Palin is one of them. I doubt anyone will get any goods on her that will matter. Even news of an abortion in the past or some other evidence of hypocrisy will not not matter as she will pray for forgiveness. - Indiscipline, on 09/07/2008, -3/+15Did you really just use Ann Coulter as a cite?
