- BREZZZ, on 07/02/2009, -9/+71Not enough people voted for him?
- Jericho6, on 07/02/2009, -2/+39Why a run-off? Just count the votes you have. How is a run-off "fair"? No one ever shows up for those, so a lot less people would have voted and those that did vote in the first election would have their vote rendered meaningless because the state can't count. Brilliant! Just because something is close doesn't mean you do it over. Imagine if sports was run that way.
- FreddieD, on 07/02/2009, -6/+43You have to really hand it to Minnesota's election system. Any time only 300 votes separate two candidates (out of 2.5 million) you are going to have a major issue on your hands because quite literally every vote counts, and I think Minnesota handled it as well as anybody could have imagined. Could you imagine how ***** they'd be had this happened in Florida?
- charlie6969, on 07/02/2009, -14/+38I'm just glad it's over!
Congrats, Sen. Franken. :) - FreddieD, on 07/02/2009, -1/+21Deciding whether or not to have a runoff election has nothing to do with how well this recount was run.
- Semblance, on 07/03/2009, -7/+26He lost because more people voted for Franken.
- emkaysmith, on 07/03/2009, -4/+22. . . or, you could simply read the Minnesota law, which mandates a recount and does not provide for a run-off. They did it the way it was supposed to be done -- and if the Minnesota GOP (with support and funding from the national office) had had any sense of decency, Franken would have taken his seat five months ago.
"Decency"? From the Republicans? What am I thinking?! - moothemagiccow, on 07/03/2009, -6/+22he got less votes
- lordmike, on 07/03/2009, -2/+18Hardly... the streamed live video from the recount proceedings... anyone and everyone could view the process... you can't get more transparent and open than that!
It was very well handled! - stpaulmatt, on 07/02/2009, -6/+20I'll tell you why he lost, Dean Barkley was the spoiler here with 15.2% of the vote or roughly 375,000 votes. Being from MN, I can tell you that the super right wingers didn't like Norm because he was too moderate, just as many moderate liberals thought Franken was nuts. Norm was a republican that was endorsed by the carpenter's union ~not something you hear from 99% of most republican candidates.
- richirwin, on 07/03/2009, -2/+15He came off like a total ***** douche during the previous 8 months.
So I guess 1 news conference kind of evens things out.
Bwahahaha - SoulGrub, on 07/03/2009, -2/+14Didn't he try to appear magnanimous by saying he's conceding for the good of the state? After he hanged on for 7 months while presumably the state was being underpresented in the senate.
- futurepastnow, on 07/03/2009, -4/+15He didn't get enough votes... barely. Which is something that happens often in politics.
Then he turned into a whiny baby about it. - WasabiBomb, on 07/03/2009, -0/+11Strange that the independent vote counters ran the most transparent vote recount and didn't actually find anything that would indicate that, huh?
- paulsabo, on 07/03/2009, -7/+15Simple answer really. The person who gets the most votes wins, and Franken got more votes than Coleman. Therefore, Coleman lost.
- KibblesnBitts, on 07/03/2009, -2/+10That's the crux of the decision.
- eadint, on 07/03/2009, -3/+11are you on crack
you are a sad looser, and a liar to boot. - s14sh3r, on 07/03/2009, -1/+9He wasn't good enough, smart enough, and dog-gone it, people don't like him.
- relaxeder, on 07/03/2009, -0/+7[citation needed]
- AndrewDB, on 07/03/2009, -3/+9Uh. Minnesota uses paper ballots.
- richirwin, on 07/03/2009, -7/+13Norm Coleman has ensured that he will never win another election.
- INTERNETMASTER, on 07/03/2009, -0/+6FTA:
Coleman’s pocketbook also played a factor – given the millions he’s already raised since Election Day and the millions more he and the Republican Party would have to spend to continue to keep further appeals alive. “Norm Coleman is busted financially,” said Larry Jacobs, an expert on state politics at the University of Minnesota. “He’s in debt for this campaign, he owes at least $100,000 for Al Franken’s attorney fees, he’s also got personal debt. - lordmike, on 07/03/2009, -6/+11I'm still upset that they didn't count the write-in vote for the "Lizard People" on that one ballot... I mean how much longer will Lizard People be discriminated against in this society? Lizard people are hard working American Citizens, and they have every right to run for office. I'm getting tired of the reptilophpbia in this country. They may be cold blooded, but lizards are people, too!
- lordmike, on 07/03/2009, -3/+8Whatever... you got to see the recount live on the Internet.. if you had any objections, you should have brought them up...
- inactive, on 07/03/2009, -1/+6fewer
- Dipsomaniac, on 07/03/2009, -1/+6And here I thought he lost because he got less votes than the winner.
Shows what I know. It's not about votes, it's about the appeal process, I guess. - relaxeder, on 07/03/2009, -0/+4Hoooly *****.
- inactive, on 07/03/2009, -5/+9Coleman was totally metal in HS.
http://imgur.com/yYxnW.jpg - fury420, on 07/03/2009, -0/+4nothing you describe sounds fraudulent in any way, merely smart & efficient campaigning
sending job-related policy info to someone who mentions being concerned about job losses or being unemployed when you speak with them? sounds like good follow though & organization, how could you possibly spin that level of involvement into a negative? - KaiserArny, on 07/03/2009, -1/+5Canada uses paper ballots also.
Judging by your age you sound like you haven't voted very often and you have absolutly no clue how elections work in Canada. - fury420, on 07/03/2009, -0/+3yeah... i recall watching the live streaming feed of the recount proceedings, my favorite part was the vote for "lizard people"
- Bulletbillx, on 07/03/2009, -0/+3If you listen to Icke, the lizard people already run everything. Lulz.
- Shwaavay, on 07/03/2009, -1/+4Try your google-fu on the word "riddance"
- fury420, on 07/03/2009, -0/+3while i disagree with his tone, nothing Spudster said has anything to do with the type of ballots used, paper or otherwise...
he's referring to online/computerized organizational software for campaigning purposes(hence the mention of speaking to people "at the door" and sending them followup pamphlets)
I have no doubt it played a huge role in the election, however Spudster seems to think this is somehow new news, as if everyone failed to notice the overall tech savvy displayed throughout Obama's campaign - Dimensio, on 07/03/2009, -1/+3" Franken won in districts with more votes than voters, it's called voter fraud."
Please reference evidence in support of this assertion. - BREZZZ, on 07/03/2009, -0/+2The Greys, Reptilians and Shape-shifters need to reconcile their differences and form a major party so they can be taken more seriously in American politics.
- richirwin, on 07/03/2009, -0/+2Good one.
- datdamonfoo, on 07/03/2009, -0/+2Well that's rather circular logic. "Coleman lost because he ran out of arguments. Coleman ran out of arguments because he lost."
- mc88, on 07/03/2009, -0/+2They were bound by the process. An election that close would have been contested by Franken also.
- ftc08, on 07/03/2009, -5/+7By "election thief" you mean legitimate winner, right?
By law, an election that narrow has to be recounted in Minnesota. He basically had no say in the matter until it came time to debate the ballots, even without the ones that were debated he won.
Coleman Lost.
The end.
Good Riddance. - pinglube, on 07/03/2009, -0/+2I would like to note that Minnesota is indeed better than all the other states. On all counts. Yep.
- realcoolguy9022, on 07/03/2009, -0/+2As a Minnesotan, someone who wants to see more fiscal responsability I feel motivated to comment on this. I also voted for Al Franken. If Mr. Coleman would have stood up, and said NO to the initial bailouts, instead of saying Yes, YES [voted yes twice] he would still be in office today. Mind you these were the 'Bush' era bailouts at the end of the election cycle, however the massive cost made me swing my vote the other way to Mr. Franken.
Simple message to the so called conservatives out there. I don't care what your party line is, but when the Democratic cantidate is promising to investigate the bailout fiasco that you voted for twice, don't whine and drag it through court for 6 months [at the end of the election he called for his opponent to NOT do what he just got done doing, and that was the court battle.] In Minnesota the recounts are automatic, the 6 month court case is not. As much as I imagine Mr. Franken will mess things up in the senate, I feel confident that Mr. Coleman would not be voting in MY best interest while he is seated. This is why he is out, and Franken won, even if it was a razor thin margin.
The letter next to the name DOES NOT MATTER, your voting record does. Credit Minnesotans for not letting Coleman continue his antics. Hopefully next cycle, there will be someone ACTUALLY financially conservative running. Until then, it's your show Franken. - rocknog, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1I'm just saying, statistically speaking, the race was so close that the margin of error was bigger than the difference in votes. And I don't need to be lectured on Minnesota law, I ***** live here. I'm just saying that the law is flawed in this case. Point is, there's some minute amount of error that is to be expected in any race, and the numbers in this case were so close that error couldn't be ruled out.
Plus, I think a lot of people seem to have forgotten that there was a third candidate, and he was largely responsible for the closeness of the race in the first place. - govtdoesnotwork, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1"It isn't easy being green," so occasionally the lizard people around here like to turn themselves brown and bask in the sun.
- DextramPennae, on 07/04/2009, -1/+2THEY RECOUNTED 3 TIMES IN FLORIDA. QUIT SPREADING BS.
- protogenxl, on 07/07/2009, -0/+1Mayor McCheese goes to Washington ^_^

http://digg.com/d316Fmr - no2gates, on 07/06/2009, -0/+1'Cause he didn't have more votes than Franken.
- Jo9100, on 07/02/2009, -10/+11He didn't challenge the election enough, that's why.
